Mr. Sherwood continues his peregrinations about the newspaper offices offering his manuscript to prove his acts while a member of the water board to be whiter than the driven snow, when somehow or other the suspicion has crept in that they have been quite streaked with yellow. From the latest screed with which he has electrified the people we take the following: The "reporter" of the Gazette having been invited publicly to set forth my "many acts of incompetency" referred to in a recent issue of his paper, goes into the matter of the Miles ditch in great detail in his report of the water meeting. As this is the only "incompetent act" he alleges, it is presumed he has discharged his battery, as no one doubts that he would tell anything that he could in order to defeat my election, or injure me in any way. I am happy to state that the Miles mystery has been cleared up, and the ditch found to be in the right place. Mr. Miles furnished a copy of the deed by which he reserved twenty acres. This is the exact amount of land cut off by the ditch. Mr. Finley is not altogether to blame in this matter, as his survey is correct according to the map of Fullerton made at a later date. The map, however, is "fudged" at this point and is not correct. All this goes to show that the news scavenger of the Gazette would show more wisdom if he obtained the facts before publishing his conclusions, as was also abundantly evidenced in the matter of the Yorba reservoir. If Mr. Sherwood can reconcile his many feats of ground and lofty tumbling on the Yorba reservoir with the dictates of honor or fair dealing he must have a private computation scheme whereby to arrive at a conclusion so at variance with fact and so absurd. From a position of arrant hostility to it so long as a rival engineer remained in charge of the work, he changed, the instant he se- REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS Furnished by the Orange County Title Company, Santa Ana. From a position of arrant hostility to it so long as a rival engineer remained in charge of the work, he changed, the instant he secured a neckhold on the job by displacing the other man, to an enthusiast in favor of its immediate construction. The story is threshed straw, known of all men. We have repeated it for the dozeneth time, and it is hardly necessary to refer to it here. But to imagine even for an instant that his position upon this question has been at all actuated by motives of honor is to do violence to one's own sentiments concerning that attribute. Pursuing further his explanation of the Miles ditch he reports for himself at Saturday's meeting of the water board as follows: Therefore, if the above conclusion is correct [that there is an excess of 11 feet in the section lines at this point, and that Mr. Miles CAN THEREFORE PROBABLY CLAIM THE PROPORTIONATE PART OF THE EXCESS, or 18 feet] the ditch is but little more than one foot off the line, and is on the 8 or 10 foot right of way which the company is disingenious. "Usually exacts in such cases" is good. He knows that no right-of-way privilege was granted the company for the ditch in its present location, that Miles has himself notified the board the ditch is not in its place and that he will not give a deed to it, and he also knows that he acted contrary to the rules of the company when he permitted a cement ditch to be constructed without first securing right of way for it. Moreover, knowing that a "fudge" of eleven feet existed in the map at this point, he is still further to blame for having caused the sacrifice of stockholders' money upon a ditch in territory which might finally, as in the present case, come into dispute. But it will be seen by reference to the proceedings of the water board in our local columns, that it refused to accept Sherwood's elegant coat of whitewash, deftly administered to himself from head to foot, before Surveyor Finley has a chance to run the final and deciding line over it. Sherwood may refer in patronizing terms to Finley, but it appears the board desires to hear the county surveyor further upon this ADDITIONAL RETURNS LA HABRA Smythe 12. It Is Estimated That They Own Twenty Million Acres Here. How much property do British subjects own in America? The aggregate based on absolute facts is known to at least twenty thousand acres; asserts Titia Bits. The largest of all is probably the Tax includes in its membership the Duke of Beaufort and Rutland; Earl Gadoga and the Baroness Burdett-Countis. The total amount of land held by the association is three hundred thousand acres. It is is the case with most of the Texas lands largely composed of what is called range country—that is land that better adapted for cattle raising than anything else. Cattle and wheat are what the British investor seems to think money should be made on in the United States. That is why the syndicate represents by the British capitalist Vincent Scullown owns eight thousand acres of land in Nebraska Iowa and Illinois. This property is situated in the heart of the wheat growing section. Two American girls who now wear by virtue of their marriage with English peers, two of the highest British titles—the Duchess of Marlborough and Lady Randelph Churchill—are interested with Sir Edward Reed in a syndicate that owns two thousand acres situated in Colorado Wyoming and New Mexico. This is purely a cattle country; an on it range thousands of head livestock. There is another syndicate which includes among its members the Earl of Dalhousie, as well as Viscountess Cross Lady Hamilton Gordon; the Marquise Cholmondeley and several others. There is a holding in a still different part of the country; for the lands of the syndicate comprise one hundred thousand acres in Mississippi; including cotton plants; acres and acres of sugar cane; and enough swine to stock one thousand farms. But it will be seen by reference to the proceedings of the water board in our local columns, that it refused to accept Sherwood's elegant coat of whitewash, deftly administered to himself from head to foot, before Surveyor Finley has a chance to run the final and deciding line over it. Sherwood may refer in patronizing terms to Finley, but it appears the board desires to hear the county surveyor further upon this point. As to our attempt to "defeat his election" or "injure him," that is ridiculous. In our political columns we have referred to his candidacy in friendly terms, he being upon the ticket supported by this journal, and we have refused to publish communications attacking him during the campaign. So we have not been attempting to defeat or injure him—not at all. We are endeavoring to discuss these matters with him, despite his many low-flung insinuations, which seem to be his principal stock in trade. Judge Shanley has received four bids for connecting his residence in Pittsburg with the street sewer, a distance of ninety feet. The cheapest bid is $203. The charge for digging the trench and laying the pipe is $180. The Judge is thinking of purchasing a cheap ticket and going back and laying the pipe himself. Godfrey Stock and family returned on Tuesday from Michigan after an absence of four months. They were accompanied by his niece, Miss Johnson, sister of Eugene Johnson of Olive, and Mr. and Mrs. Hedic of Blissfield, Mich., who will make Anaheim their home. Godfrey says the weather is getting cold back in the states and he thought he would try the California climate again. TUSTIN. Pardee 116, Lane 63, Daniels 115, Smythe 65. The Dentist's Opportunity. "I was particularly busy on last Tuesday," said the dentist. "My office was crowded all day, and one of the last patients to be attended to was a big, fat, middle-aged woman. She had been waiting for nearly three hours, but at last it was her turn, and she moved up to the chair with all the airy grace of a steam roller. Annually she impressed her deeply, for the first thing she said was: "'Doctor, you vas doing a goot beesness.'" 'Yes,' I said, 'I keep pretty busy.' 'My, but you must be maiging a big lot of money! Say, doctor, vas you a single man?'" "This was getting rather interesting, but the question was fired point blank, at short range, and I felt that I had to answer, so I admitted that such was the case. By this time she had hoisted herself into the chair, and she gave me a look that—well, you remember the picture entitled 'The Amorous Hippopotamus?'" 'Say, doctor,' she said, 'und I vas a single voman!'" —New York Sun. An Ingenious Romeo. The parents of a Bethany (Mo.) girl objected to her suitor and to keep her from running away locked her in her room. Her "dearly beloved" was not to be outwitted, and remembering that she had a few weeks before taken a scorpion or ring belonging to him, he had a warrant issued for her arrest and sent the officer to serve the paper. While the officer was taking her to town the lover met her on the road and, having all preparations made, went on her bond and drove with her immediately to the preacher's house, where they were made one. —Exchange. This Terrapin Has a Diamond Back. A "genuine diamond back terrapin," as it is termed, is displayed in the show window of a jeweler on South Gay street. The terrapin is small in size, but disports on its back 13 large diamonds. The Triumph of Danny. Several years before the discovery of oil at Pithole an Irishman named McCarthy and his son Dan came to this country from the Emerald Isle. Dan was a young man of 20, but his father looked upon him as a mere boy and seemed to take delight in ridiculing him before people. "Yis Dan is a good bit hammers say successively," but, Danny, no b'y, ye'll niver set the river on fire." This was his stock witticism, and it annoyed Dan very much, but he did his best and soon surprised the old gentleman by securing a lucrative job. "Yis Danny has a job all right," he said. "It's $1.50 a day, but the b'y'll niver set the river on fire. Not be." When oil was found at Pithole, Dan hurried to the scene and was soon earning unusually large wages as a teamster. All the petroleum was drawn in barrels, and teams were in great demand. He saved his money, bought an acre of land and soon had a well drilled that was producing 100 barrels of oil per day at $10 per barrel. The elder McCarthy joined him, saw the well, received a liberal gift of money, and then shook his head ominously. "Tis a good thing, Danny," he cried; "you're doin well, but mark me worrends, yes'll niver set the river on fire, me b'y." A few days later a flood wrecked one of Dan's small wooden tanks, the oil ran down the river, and there was great excitement. As Dan and his father stood on the bank watching the oil float away Dan drew a match and lighted it. "Father," he said coolly, "the next tome yes say Ol'll niver set the river on fire plaze remimber that Ol had a chance waanst, and—and didn't do ut bedad!" Then he blew out the match. —Harper's Bazar. The Lion of Keos. There are lions and lions, but the lion of Joul is the lion of Hellas, says Professor J.
