THE STATE'S PRODUCTION OF MINERALS.
From the office of J. J. Crawford, State Mineralogist, we have received an interesting bulletin showing the mineral production of the State by counties during the year 1894. The total product of all kinds of minerals in all the counties of the State during the year amounted to $20,203,294 44, the precious metals forming more than two-thirds of the output, viz., gold, $13,023,281 89; and silver, $297,331 55. The production of other minerals included (1) the mining of different grades of metallic ores, embracing the precious metals, gold and silver, quicksilver and chrome; (2) non-metallic minerals, including borax, coal and salt; (3) hydrocarbons and gases, including petroleum and bituminous rock; and (4) structural materials, such as granite, limestone, macadam and paving stone. The tabulated statement of the production by counties of gold and silver, together with the value of their total mineral product, will be found of interest:

CONGRESS ASSEMBLES.
SCENES IN THE HOUSE AND SENATE AT THE OPENING OF THE SESSION ON MONDAY — REED CHOSEN SPEAKER.
Washington, December 2.—The Fifty-fourth American Congress opened at noon to-day with crowded galleries and an ocean of flowers and other manifestations of acute interest in its proceedings. For the third time in the last quarter of a century, the popular will found expression in a reversal of political dominance. The new Congress was called to order with Democratic ascendency in the Senate on the point of disappearing, and the lower house overwhelmingly Republican. Both chambers had undergone much-needed improvements in the way of carpets, fresh paint and artistic frocoing which lent them a cheerful appearance.in strong contrast with the lowering clouds and foggy weather outside.
Possibly there was more general interest in the opening of the House of Representatives—the house of the people—but one could not judge between the two as to popularity from the number of visitors.for the galleries of both were crowded to their utmost capacity. The deliberations in the Senate were conducted with historical dignity,而the opening in the lower house took on the same animated appearance that has always characterized its sessions.
The Senate was called to order by Vice-President Stevenson, and the House by James Kerr, clerk of the last House, the gavels in each chamber falling at the same instant on the stroke of l2 o'clock.Fifteen new Senators were to be seen in the upper house, and six or eight times that many in lower house. One of the most notable features of the opening of the House of Representatives was the large number of young faces to be seen.In point of fact, the President is the youngest in the history of the American Congress.
Not over three or four Senators were absent when the first roll was called;while in the House that outlasted it was answered to their names. One of the coincidences brought out in the roll calls was a George Perkins in both the House and Senate;one from California, the other from Iowa.Every member of the California delegation in both Houses was in his seat when the gavel fell.Preliminary proceedings were soon dispensed with in the House, and twenty minutes after it had been called to order the event of the day—that of electing a Speaker—was on.
Grosvenor of Ohio was first to ask for recognition, and in very few words, not over fifty,他 placed Mr. Reed's name in nomination.Sayers of Texas followed in close order with the name of ex-Speaker Crisp. Then came Congressman Ken of Nebraska with the nomination of John C.Bell of Colorado,a Populist. The ballot was viva voce, and consumed considerable time,但 lacked any features of particular interest.
When the result was announced Mr. Reed had a clean majority of l2 and the galleries showed their appreciation by tremendeous applause. They became even more demonstrative a few minutes later when Mr.

County of Orange State California,
FOR THE
Fiscal Year 1894-18
Orange county produced in the way of minerals only 1500 tons of coal during the year, which sold for $6,000. The amount is low in the list of counties, and we are very near the last, but we come in with flying colors ahead of Merced and Yolo, the former of which confined its mineral product to the mining of $762 50 of gold, and the latter to the production of only 2,500 cubic feet of building stone, which sold for $1,000. Los Angeles' production of petroleum was larger than that of any other county in the State, it being 475,650 barrels, valued at $617,065, and it produced 1,134 tons of gypum, valued at $11,346. Riverside county produced 7,891 tons of coal, which sold for $16,142; 1,981 tons of salt, valued at $3,-962, and 50 tons of gypsum, which brought an even $100. San Bernardino produced 10,378,699 pounds of borax, the largest production of that mineral of any county in the State, valued at $720,509. It produced a thousand tons of salt, worth $3,000; 8,000 barrels of cement, valued at $21,600; 31,000 cubic feet of granite, which brought $31,622; 40,000 barrels of lime, which sold for $32,000, and 5,000 tons of building stone, valued at $6,250. San Diego produced 700 tons of salt, valued at $5,000; 50 tons of asbestos, which brought $2,250; and 30,384 tons of rubble rock, which sold for $49,374.
Alameda's output of minerals was confined to salt, brick and macadam; Colusa's to building stone exclusively, and so was Contra Costa's to coal, and Lake's to quicksilver. Marin produced brick, macadam, paving stone and paving blocks; Napa, quicksilver and magnesite; San Francisco, macadam, rock, concrete and stone; San Joquin, natural gas; San Benito quicksilver and gypsum; Santa Barbara asphaltum, Santa Clara, quicksilver and brick; Santa Cruz, bituminous rock and lime; Solano, stone and macadam; Sonoma, paving blocks; Tehame, chrome; Tulare, granite; Ventura, petroleum, and Yolo, building stone.
California's production of minerals is yet quite a factor in her material prosperity.
The esteemed Chino Champion, which has the disadvantage of being published under the shadow of the big sugar mill, and seeing things through factory spectacles, darkly comes to hand with the following:
One or more of the papers about Southern California have spoken of the prices of beets at Chino as $3 per ton. This is misleading and incorrect. The price to be paid is a basis of $3 per ton, with an additional 25 percent.
