THE KING AND THE DANCER. LEOPOLD OF BELGIUM'S ALLEGED INTRIGUE WITH D'ALENCON—A FIGURE IN THE PARISIAN DANCE HALLS. A cable despatch from Brussels published last week spoke of a sensation in the Belgian capital caused by open comment in a newspaper on the relations of King Leopold II, and a notorious Parisienne, Mlle. Emilienne d'Alencon, one of the favorites among the dancers of the Folies Bergere. It is not the first time that King Leopold's name has been mentioned in connection with escapades of the kind, but public remark on the royal diversion has been generally subdued, unless in the foreign press, in which the manifestations of the King's propensities have from time to time been recorded. Parisians think that if it be true that King Leopold has formed a connection with d'Alencon he met her in one of the restaurants where the gay of Paris go to sup, rather than at the Folies-Bergere. The King frequently makes excursions to London and the cities of the Continent, and some of his excesses on these occasions have caused talk. It has been said that some of them ended in London police courts, and a story was once circulated in London that the modern Babylon was sending young girls to Belgium at the King's instigation. This is the king who declared that no blood should be shed in his kingdom if he could help it, and who worked to have capital punishment abolished in Belgium. The King's mother was French. He is a grandson of the Queen of Louis Philippe, and he is a nephew of Queen Victoria. His long beard and hair are nearly white. About a year ago he disappeared from his country house and was not found for ten days, messages of State meanwhile being returned to the Minister from the various points at which they had sought him. Finally he was found in Geneva. Radical and Socialist newspapers said that the King might at least subordinate his personal affairs to State interests sufficiently to allow his Ministers to communicate with him. There is one great secret about Leopold II, that will not be known until he dies. It is supposed to be connected with affairs of State. Two years ago, not long after the adoption of the new Constitution in Belgium, he handed to his Minister a sealed letter to be deposited in the State archives with the original copy of the new Constitution, and not to be opened until he dies. King Leopold's present charmer is said to be the heroine of the wild escapade at the student's ball in Paris two years ago, when even Paris was shocked. The woman chosen for Queen was on that occasion carried around the hall clad only in a scarf of gauze, and members of the Social Purity League who were present had her and some others secured. Hundreds of visitors climb, drive, and ride up the mountain to get to the beautiful view, but less than five per cent are rewarded for their exertions. A special train is run up every night during the season, and many people go up and stay over night to see the sunrise the next morning. Sunrise on Mount Washington is said to be worth much exertion and expense; but, unfortunately, the exertion and the expense are always there and the reward rarely comes. An average of one clear morning a week on the summit is what those who know best think a fair estimate. The meanest feature is the uncertainty that accompanies all predictions regarding weather on this mountain. Those who know most about it confess frankly their inability to give any intelligent prediction more than fifteen minutes in advance. When the peak is covered with clouds and the air is full of moisture, disguised persons may make the descent, only to find, after they are half way down the mountain side, that the clouds have drifted and the view from the peak is no longer obscured. In the same way those who see no cloud within apparent reach of the peak when they begin the ascent may find themselves in a howling storm when they get to the top. Sometimes the clouds settle down on the peak for days at a time, while all around the skies over the mountains and valleys are perfectly clear. The most annoying of all annoyances is the fact that sometimes what appears to be only a small cloud hovering over the peak develops into a tremendous mountain storm, sending the temperature down to trot point, and accompanied by blinding rain and terrific winds. Even in the summer the great chains that hold the hotel on the mountain top down to the rocks are strained. During the month of August snow was seen on the peak once and several men who had wandered from the hotel only a few rods were discovered half frozen and unconscious. It is interesting to note that even the fickle weather and other disappointing conditions of life on Mount Washington are not sufficient to deter the enterprising newspaper man. A clever little daily called Among the Clouds, and said to be the only paper in the world published on top of a mountain, is issued every morning in spite of the fact that sometimes communication with the people below is cut off for days. One day when the regular train did not appear the compositors and the printer's devil, after finishing their regular work, unprovised a car and rode down the mountain at a rate of speed never equaled before or since. They were bound to have their paper on sale at the various resorts. VOICE OF THE PRESS GO AWAY FROM MONE TO HEAR THE NEWS. From the Norwalk Call. GENERAL MACEO RECEIVES A SEVERE WOUND—INSURGENTS REPULSE BY A STRONG SPANISH FORCE. HAVANA, October 5.—The most bloody battle of the present war was fought recently in the country between San Arribble and San Fernando, in the Holguin district Santiago de Cuba. The insurgents were commanded by General Antonio Maco while the Spanish troops were commanded by General Eschalgue, who put in an appearance at the head of 1300 infantry and 2 cavalry. The Spanish troops also possessed one field cannon. General Eschalgue tributed his men in admirable fashion and arranged to fall at a certain spot held by insurgents. They being aware of his movements, arranged for a strong outpost to check the impetus of the Spanish troops. The regular Spanish forces paid very little attention to the small body stationed at its outposts and rushed to the main foot wherever and whenever the insurgents could be found. The insurgents made a desperate resistance which lasted several hours. The charges against them insurgent cavalry upon the Spanish quarter were not as effective as in other similar conflicts. The Spanish cavalry held these attacks parties at bay, and it seemed as though Spanish artillery was more deadly to them than surgents than formerly. Finally Genoa Antonio Maceo, seeing his men in a critical situation, rushed to the front with his attacker He had scarcely taken a position in front of line, when he fell, seriously wound Himself at once placed him on stretcher and succeeded in carrying him to the field. Colonel du Cango also fought the bandera Bernudez at Vereda del Cuervo, Santa Ana. Three of the insurgents four of the troops are reported to have been killed. Colonel Tovar was wounded. He fired on the insurgents at Bayanosea and Mendiet. Lieutenant Zuagin Vida wounded. The correspondent of the Association Press, when notified by cable to-day from New York that a dispatch had been received from Madrid announcing that the Herd of latter city had published a dispatch from Havana saying that it was reported here that the Spanish cruiser Conde de Venado had foundered, called upon Admiral Imas, the Commander of the Spanish navy forces here and questioned him as to truth of the rumor. The Admiral prompt classed the report as being positively untouched and was very indignant at what he termed "the wild news" circulated in Madrid. He said that the Conde de Venadoito sailed on Wednesday last from Madrid in company with the Spanish cruiser Infanta Isabelle. his personal affairs to State interests sufficiently to allow his Ministers to communicate with him. The woman chosen for Queen was on that occasion carried around the hall old only in a scarf of gauze, and members of the Social Purity League who were present had her and some others prosecuted for offending public decency. The accused were fined. The King of the Belgians, now nearly 60 years old, has taken up with one of the two most widely known women of the Paris demi-monde, a girl of twenty and odd years, whose appearance as a dansseuse on the stage of the Folies Bégère is due only to her love of notoriety. Poverty does not impel her to enter the lively of the kickers, for she spends 100,000 francs a year; and she is said to be all but devoid of artistic talent. She ranks as one of her class whose presence at public events is duly chronicled in the public prints. After the names of the people of society mentioned as attending the opera, races, or theatre, the papers note the presence of d'Alencon. She has numbered among her admirers members of the nobility, and one son of a house whose history dates back to Charlemagne, was packed away to China to break off his infatuation for her. He died there, and she mourned him garably before all Paris. Mile d'Alencon's photograph has been in the show windows of Paris for several years. She was first heard of some half a dozen years ago at the Cirqued Ete in the Champa-Elysées, where she exhibited some trained rabbits. The story goes that she had worked in a provincial hotel, where a wealthy man noticed her. She was not beautiful, but she was pretty, and her figure was attractive. He brought her to Paris, and as a pretext installed her as the exhibitor of performing rabbits at the summer circus. She appeared in bloomers and put the rabbits through some of the old tricks of performing dogs. They bowed and rolled over. The rabbits were voted very intelligent; not so Mile d'Alencon. She was put down as very stupid. But she did not hide her light or bury her talent; she wore bloomers. She had come to Paris poor, but in a short time she had horses and carriages and hotels, and she drove in the Bois with the rest of Paris. She was still called stupid, but she was fashionable, and she had admirers, and wanted more. She danced at the Folies and in the Champs-Élysées, not of necessity, but for exploitation. The most notorious of her conquests was the young Duo d'Uzes, son of the old Duchess of that ancient line who did so much for Gen. Boulanger. The Duo d'Uzes was popularly reported to have spent 2,000,000 francs on her when a couple of years ago, he was sent to Tonquin to be away from her. He died there, and when the news of his death reached Paris Mile d'Alencon went into mourning and contributed to the ever-succeeding sensations of the capital by driving through the Bois de Boulogne with her carriage and harness heavily draped. At her throat she wore a bouquet of violets—the French mourning flower—and great bunches of them were fastened to the headstalls of the horses. Another youth who succumbed to d'Alencon is Max Lebaudy, about twenty-one years old, now serving in the army. His family fortune is immense, the Lebaudys having attained great wealth in the sugar business. It is said that the young man not long ago got leave of absence and hastened to Trouville, where his chaperon was dancing, and where he made life worth seeing, until the army authorities noticed it and revoked his leave. Emilienne d'Alencon is known outside France, as she has been in Russia and Belgium, among other places, and there are peacocks below it cut off for days. One day when the regular train did not appear the compositors and the printer's devil, after finishing their regular work, improvised a car and rode down the mountain at a rate of speed never qequaled before or since. A sprain may be promptly treated before inflammation sets in, which insures a cure in about one-third time otherwise required. Cats and bruises should receive immediate attention before the parts become swollen, and when Chamberlain's Pain Balm is applied it will heal them without matter being formed, and without leaving a scar. A sore throat may be caused in one night. A piece of flannel dampened with this liniment and bound on over the seat of pain will cure lame back or pain in the side or chest in twenty-four hours. It is the most valuable, however, for rheumatism. Persons afflicted with this disease will be delighted with the prompt relief from pain which it affords, and it can be depended upon to effect a complete cure. For sale by Derge. Gratitude. Milwaukee Oct. 3—Mrs. Gustav Pabst formerly Margaret Mather, created a sensation near Twenty-ninth and Cedar streets on day by horsewhipping her husband, a son of the wealthy brewer. What was the cause of the trouble no one seems to know, by numerous residents of vicinity, eye wounds of the altercation, which began in buggy in which the couple was riding; so that just about noon when Mr. and Pabst were about to turn into Cedar street toward their home; Mrs. Pabst grabbed thirst from the socket and struck Mr. Pabst full in the face. Mr. Pabst jumped out at the buggy and started down the street. The woman drove the horse to a post, bitched at her husband, overtaking him block away, where she struck him four times in the face. Young Pabst then wrenched thirst from her hands and threw it away. But one-sided battle was by no means ended; for she then clinched his flat and planted a blow from the shoulder square on his nose. Mr. Pabst moved on at a rapid pace; the woman following both entering their home together on Cedar street. Emilienne d'Alencon is known outside of France, as she has been in Russia and Belgium, among other places, and there are people in New York who personally or through friends know much of her. It is said that she and Liana de Pougy are the best known women of their class in Paris. De Pougy is a dancer at the Folies-Bergere, and between her and Otero there has been a great deal of rivalry. A marked difference between De Pougy and Otero is that while Otero thrusts her famous jewels before the public at every opportunity, De Pougy never wears any, although she has as many as Otero. The two dancers on one occasion found themselves together at Monte Carlo, both were billed to appear on the stage on the same evening. Otero came on more gorgeous than ever, with diamonds, rubies, and sapphires blazing on her breast, which they completely covered. When De Pougy appeared there followed her on the stage her maid, whom she had loaded down with her own magnificent jewelry, disposing them as Otero had worn here, about her neck and breast. This distinctively Parisian coup was the hit of the night. London, Sept. 28.—King Leopold's private extravagance of his newly formed relations with an actress on the Folies-Bergere are the subject of sensational comments in a Brussels paper. Hitherto the Belgian press has been silent in regard to his Majesty's frolic, but they were well known in London society, where talk of his goings-on at the West End and at Brighton have almost ceased to be of interest.
