CITY COUNCIL IN SESSION. Engineer Sharpe Tenders His Resignation. Which Is Accepted, and Bids will He Called for to Fill the Position—Engineer Schneider Registers a Kick—Says Sharpe Neglected His Duties, and was up Town Evenings When He Ought to Have Been at the Power House—Editor Rugg Applies for the Job—The Southern Pacific Ask for a Franchise Through Santa Ana Street, and South from that Thoroughfare on Olive Street to the Southern City Limits. The Board of City Trustees met in regular session on Tuesday evening; present, Rust, Conrad, Lewis, Helmsen and McWilliams. Marshal Steadman reported the collection of $346 for water and licenses and for the electric lights $148 45. Treasurer Cahen reported a balance in the treasury on June 10th of $1,479 51, and an overdraft in the electric light fund of $199 25. The Clerk reported the collection of $138 01 for the month ending June 10th. The reports were accepted and filed. The Finance Committee reported the purchase of articles needed for the maintenance of the water works, and the fixing of the electric light rate for the Odd Fellows' building at 30 cents per 1000 Watts. The Committee on Public Improvements reported that Cayce & Robinson had applied for an arc light for their store, and that the brick pile on the street in rear of Mr. Schindler's property should be removed. Theo. Rimpau appeared before the board in reference to the water meter recently placed at his residence on Palm street, which has had the effect of considerably raising the rate he has been paying. He maintained that the meter was out of order and did not register correctly, as upwards of 900 gallons of water per day had been recorded, which he claimed was excessive. He asked for a reduction in the rate for the past month, which amounted to $10 65. A further test of the meter will be made by the Marabal to determine the exact amount of water used. Three bids to insure the water works and the electric light plant were received by the Clerk. Two were for 2 per cent, and one, that of the Etna company, represented by Theo. Rimpau, for 1.90 per cent. The latter was accepted. Agent Darling of the Southern Pacific presented a communication from that com- and cordially offered their services to the convention committee for any purpose it might deem best, and several of them have been selected for headquarters for State Unions. Special efforts have been made to have the music worthy of the occasion, and it is expected that the singing, under the direction of Mr. Geo. C. Stebbins and others, will be one of the inspiring features of the convention. We wish we could give the program in full, but it is rather too lengthy to insert here. However, when we see the names of Gov. Frederick T. Greenhalge, Rev. John Henry Barrows, John Willis Baer, D. L. Moody, Rev. F. E. Clark, President Palton of Princeton, and a host of other names more or less familiar, we can imagine the treat there is in store for those who will be so fortunate as to be present at the convention of '95, and we can hope that a breath of its inspiration and enthusiasm will be wafted as far west as Orange county. The C. E. Society of the Presbyterian church of Anaheim have just sent away $20 39, the accumulations of the 2 cents per week pledges for missions, and the 1 cent per week pledges toward the reduction of the heavy debt of the Home Mission Board. Of the amount, $6 50 goes to Miss Gibson, the C. E. missionary among the Indians in Alaska; $6 50 to Mrs. Hoskins, the foreign missionary supported by California Endeavors, and $7 39 to the debt of the Home Mission Board. The Presbyterian C. E. Society have been trying the experiment of uniting some of the good citizenship movement with their socials. A social was held at the residence of Mr. Boyd last Thursday evening. During the evening Miss Edna Williams sang a pretty little ballad, Miss Beaizley gave a reading, and Mr. Miller, Mr. Kieffer and Mr. Boyd each read a paper on the cities of different classes in this State and their comparative forms of government and methods of election. After the program an hour or two was spent socially and pleasantly by those present. BEETHOVEN MUSICALE. The musicale at the residence of Dr. Bullard on Monday evening was one of the most enjoyable in the series given by the Aeolian Society, and was quite largely attended and thoroughly enjoyed. The Doctor and his wife dispensed their usual charming hospitality, and the evening will be long remembered as one of the most sociable, as well as musically perhaps the best, thus far given by the society. Mr. Opid's cello playing was the feature of the evening. Next to the human voice, the cello is the most expressive, as it is also the most impressive of musical instruments. Prof. Opid's instrumentation carried away his hearers, what with the intensity of his musical feelings—now stormy passion, then imploring, sobbing love, now kneeling at the altar of eternal love, ASKED FOR A FRANCHISI The Southern Pacific Railway Build Through Santa Ana Street. The Road Will Continue on to Prairia, and Work Will Begin Within Thirty Days—The Lost Will Run South on Olive Street Join the Tustin Track at Semiphore, and the Present Train Between the Depot and the River Will Probably be Taken Up—The Road from Long Beach to Corinth through Anaheim, and a Route Projected to the Landing—Santa Ana Will Not be on the Thorough Line to San Diego. At the Trustees' meeting on Tuesday evening Agent Darling appeared and asked for franchise for the building of the Southern Pacific track through Santa Ana street from West to East street, and south on Olive street from the intersection of that thoroughfare with Santa Ana street. Mr. Muir had telegraphed down on Monday asking to date of the meeting of the board, and we expected here to present the application for the franchise, but Tuesday afternoon he telegraphed that he had been called East and would start thence early on Wednesday morning, and could not come. In his absence Agent Darling presented the railroad company's application to build their tracks up town. The application was duly filed, and as there exists no objection on part of the Trustees to granting of the franchise-on the contrary, quite the reverse—the same will be granted at the earliest possible moment, and as soon thereafter as practicable graders and track layers will be put to work on the road and the railroad will be built up town. It is the purpose of the company to extend the road first, to Placentia, and in all probabilities the railroad will be running to that rich section inside of thirty days after this beginning of operations here. From the junction of Olive and Santa Ana streets, the road will branch south to intersect the Tustin line at the semiphore, which a gang of men have for a week or two past been engaged in repairing, reballasting and fitting up with new ties. This line will be through line to San Diego, and according to officials high in the service of this company, the Southern Pacific track from in reference to the water meter recently placed at his residence on Palm street, which has had the effect of considerably raising the rate he has been paying. He maintained that the meter was out of order and did not register correctly, as upwards of 900 gallons of water per day had been recorded, which he claimed was excessive. He asked for a reduction in the rate for the past month, which amounted to $10.65. A further test of the meter will be made by the Marshal to determine the exact amount of water used. Three bids to insure the water works and the electric light plant were received by the Clerk. Two were for 2 per cent, and one, that of the Etna company, represented by Theo Rimpan, for 1.90 per cent. The latter was accepted. Agent Darling of the Southern Pacific presented a communication from that company asking for a franchise to operate their lines upon Santa Ana street, from the S.P. depot to the eastern limits of the city, and also upon Olive street south from Santa Ana street to the southern limits. Supt. Muir having been called east upon urgent business, was unable to attend the meeting. The company urged that immediate steps be taken to secure them the franchise. Attorney Chynoweth and Chairman Lewis of the Committee on Public Improvements were instructed to meet Messas, Bicknell & Trask, the company's attorneys, in Los Angeles and draft the necessary ordinance. Electrical Engineer Sharpe tendered his resignation as engineer to take effect July 1st, he stating that inasmuch as some members of the council had criticised his actions, he preferred to resign. The resignation was accepted by the following vote: Ayes—Rust, Conrad and Lewis. Nays—Helmsen and McWilliams. Trustee McWilliams moved that a committee of three be appointed to have power to employ an engineer to conduct the water works and the electric plant, the committee to supervise the running of the works in every detail. This was not adopted, a tie vote resulting, as follows: Ayes—McWilliams and Helmsen. Nays—Conrad and Lewis. Mayor Rust voted against it. Mr. Sharpe was instructed to go over to the water works and relieve Engineer Scherder, who was said to have a grievance and wanted to appear before the board and state it. McWilliams said that he did not see why Schnieder should be sent for, but the chair politely requested Sharpe to relieve Schneder that he might appear and make known to the council the nature of his grievance—possibly he wanted to resign also. While waiting for him to arrive, the board discussed the matter of hiring an engineer and having him employ his assistant. Editor Rugg offered his services as engineer at the works for $50 per month, saying he was a licensed engineer in disguise, and as the board were upon the point of hiring him, to the exclusion of Joe des Granges, who was also understood to be after the job, Schnider's footfall was heard upon the stairs. Schnider complained that his labors at the water works were more than he could attend to and do his work properly, claiming that Engineer Sharpe neglected to do his share of the work. Schnider said he does not profess to be an electrician, and at times being alone at the plant he could not prevent accidents should anything go wrong. He said that Sharpe has been negligent in not remaining at the power house evenings instead of coming up town and leaving him to attend to all the work alone. On the other hand Mr. Sharpe claimed that he has fully performed his duties as head engineer, and should his actions be unsatisfactory he was willing to resign. He says moreover that he gave Schnider instructions as to how to shut down the plant in case of accident and to the attending of other matters connected with the running of the works, while he attended to the outside work. Against all of which Schnider interposes a mild denial. Sharpe's resignation was accordingly accepted, and the board will employ another engineer. It was ordered that bids be advertised for, calling for a competent engineer to run the water works and electric plant, the success- A BAD CHECK. A man named C. H. Finch, who has been thinning beets for B. F. Pritchard at Buena Park, came to town last Wednesday afternoon, and having a check drawn in his favor by Pritchard for $38.65, went into the place of business of one of the merchants on Los Angeles street, and asked to have it cashed. The merchant at first demurred, not knowing the man, but a young man who chanced to be in the place, whom the merchant knew, vouchsafef the information that Pritchard's check was good, and upon his recommendation the money was turned over to Finch. Next day the check was cashed at the Citizens' Bank and sent to the Southern California National Bank of Los Angeles for collection, but it was returned, marked "Payment stopped." This was made known to the merchant and he immediately set about to locate Finch and have the matter righted. Constable Bittner was detailed to work upon the case and learned from Pritchard that Finch had worked for him and that the check had been duly issued. Besides a sum of money had been paid Finch, with which he was instructed to pay off several other laborers in Pritchard's employ. Finch failed to do as instructed. Becoming aware of Finch's action, Pritchard stopped payment upon the cheek in Los Angeles, which in the meantime had been cashed here. The case is a complicated one and the merchant will probably experience some difficulty in recovering his money. SWEET GIRL GRADUATES. A galaxy of sweet young loveliness, comprising the several sweet girl graduates of the public school, passed down Center street yesterday afternoon, clad all in blue. THE GAZETTE hopes that, standing where the brook and river meet, they may all look forward to lives of usefulness in society, as well as happiness to themselves, and that they may have good fortune all their lives long, have lots of beaux to buy they candy, and always be as pretty as they were yesterday afternoon. Stern Brothers. Numerous purchases have been made, and consignments will be forwarded shortly. The low prices prevailing here have induced shippers to look to the East for a market. Isaac Lyon after two months of merchandising in Los Angeles, became tired of the Angelic town, and moved his stock of goods to Fullerton, with the intention of opening a store in the Sansinai block. Before he opened up he sold the stock to Los Angeles parties, and will give his attention to his fine ranch at Orangethorpe. In the recent drawing of premiums given by a San Francisco newspaper, Mr. C. H. Gosch of this city drew a box of gum, and A. H. Delery of Westminster came off winner by drawing a doll-baby carriage. As Mr. Delery had no use for his prize, he gave it to the little girl of his employer. The Odd Fellows' lodge have elected the following officers to serve for the ensuing term: J. E. Dunphy, N. G.; Frank Wommer, V. G.; A.M. Williams, Secretary; J. P. Zeyn, Treasurer; E. W. Champlin, Trustee. The installation exercises will probably take place the second meeting night in July. Marriage licenses were issued by Cupid Beckett on Tuesday as follows: George Francis Mottet, aged 34 years, of Walla Walls, Wash., and Loenie Marie Vincent, aged 21 years, of Anaheim; Otto Dargartz, aged 25 years, and Amelia Peters, aged 20 years, both of Anaheim; Theodore B. Laidley, aged 21 years and over, both of Orange. Wm. Crowther informs us that the hardshell walnut crop at Placentia will be three-eighths of a crop this year, and the soft shells seventy-five per cent of a crop. The quality will be first class, and as the entire Rivera crop is estimated at a three-eighths yield, prices ought to advance a shade over those of last year. The railroads have made the growers a concession of half a cent a pound. Henry Oelkers informs us that twenty-five or thirty Turners and their families from this city will attend the Turner celebration in Los Angeles beginning on the 22d and continuing three days. The Southern Pacific will reduce the round-trip rate to $1 10, good for three days. There will be a meeting of the Turn Verein on Saturday evening, which all members are urged to attend. Ben Kraemer carries a watch that has the distinction of having been buried three years, and it keeps good time. Ben was riding a bronco a number of years ago and was bucked off, and the watch, a Swiss timepiece which he had carried for a long time, dropped out of his pocket, and became imbedded in the sand. Recently it was plowed up and cleaned, and now it is just as good as ever. We hope none of our readers who have been watching the gradual disintegration of the irrigation district suffered the shock that blend of light red wine that is different from the average claret, and which for superior bouquet and excellence of flavor is hard to surpass. He has ripe fruit on the ranch every day of the year, having had ripe apricots and peaches for some time past. His last year's crop at apples is just gone, and he had ripe grapes up to Christmas. Mr. Fay has a very interesting example in the science of hydrostatics in operation at his thirty-acre ranch southwest of town. He has a ten-inch well down 110 feet, and raises water sufficient to irrigate the place, with a twelve-horse-power gasoline engine that lifts a crystal stream and plunges it into a cement tank sunk at the site of the well with the force of a veritable cataract of Lodore. Four eight-inch pipes diverge to different points on the ranch and the water raises from the apertures with the volume of a good-sized artesian well. Thence it is conducted in ditches over the land for irrigation purposes. The pump and power house is very substantially constructed, having solid cement foundation and walls of brick, and the engine, which is a marvel of simplicity, whirls its way along without a particle of "lost motion." The expense for gasoline is about $1 10 per working day, and the volume of water raised is something difficult to determine. A solid ten-inch flow when working at high pressure is the volume thrown from the pipe, and the irrigating ditches show a swiftly running current of a good head of water. Mr. Fay left on Saturday with his daughter Edith for Denver, where he will remain until along towards winter. He will probably dispose of his interests in the Colorado city one of these days and give his entire time and attention to his rapidly growing interests here. The report circulated at Santa Ana some days ago that Conrad had sold his brewery here and would move to Los Angeles, was so entirely without foundation that it provoked nothing but smiles among those conversant with the ties of friendship as well as business that bind our enterprising West End brower to this city. But we went down to see whether it was so, all the same. We found the Burgomeister so engrossed with the preparation of a new brew, as well as directing the work of the large force of employees at his mammoth establishment, that he had hardly time to talk about, much less consider, idle reports that might be flying around about him. Of course the report was entirely untrue—nothing could possibly have been further from the fact. The business of the brewery is constantly expanding, as the excellence of its manufacture becomes known to sections far and near. Conrad's beer seems to a connoisseur like the blending of Pilsener and Bass—combining as it does the body of the one with the flavor and dolciacy of the other. There is nothing deleterious about it, and a foaming goblet of this amber nectar on a warm day steadies the nerves, quickens the intellect and causes him with a spark of red corpuscles in his veins to stand erect, slap his leg and stare at the girls in the windows. Hoch der Conrad, not to say noch eins! Mr.T.J.Jones informs us that the committee having in charge the dumping beets at this place have determined to fatha side dump, commonly known as Carroll system, the elevator plan at five favored having been found to be impractical cable. The platform will be built on brewery spur opposite to where Tim Carroll platform was erected last season, and will60 feet in length, ten feet wide, ten to eleven feet high, and will have an approach of four feet high, and a descent of 75 feet. It will enable to dump a load of beets a minute; or fast as the wagons can be weighed upon driven upon the platform. Wagon-beds can be made to conform to the dump for $12 for a two-ton load, and $15 for a five ton load. There will probably be wagons hire to haul beets into the dump; at 50 cents per ton, and where four or more loads do not can be hauled; this charge will probably be lowered. The total expense for weighing testing, bookkeeping, etc., is reckoned in ten cents per ton; but twenty cents per ton will be charged; cover the cost of this dump and scales, which will come to about $500. E.F.Kellogg informs us that the rates for a two-ton wagon bed need not exceed $80 for a five-ton bed, from $10 to $12.A information regarding the method of constructing them may be procured by calling Mr Carroll. Tim Boege made a trip to Chino on Tuesday day to inspect the progress of work on the sugar refinery. He found a force of fifty sixty men busily at work getting the factors in readiness for the coming campaign.East mechanic receives from two to four dollars per day, which makes money rather pleasant about the place, even though the sugar campaign is some weeks off yet. Conrad's friends will be glad to hear he is able to be out again after her ill-consequent on running a nail into her She has yet a very bad limp, but has providential escape from what at one threatened the very worst results. Fannie Higgins of this city has red distinction at the meeting of the Parlor, N. D. G. W., at Grass Valley. She has been appointed a member of the committee on transportation, one of the most important of the session. No flies on Ana- Louis Hache, the beet expert of the bretinery, was in town a day or two going over the beet fields to approximate the tonnage. Mr. Hache estimates the average yield will be from ten to tons per acre, while on some pieces of it will be twenty, and he places the yield at about thirty thousand tons.
