The Weekly Gazette. ISSUED EVERY THURSDAY. Henry Kuchel, Charles Kuchel, Editors and Proprietors. THURSDAY... JANUARY 14, 1892. THE SUGAR REFINERY ASSURED. The efforts of the citizens of Garden Grove, Westminster and this city in the agitation for the establishment of a co-operative beet sugar refinery here have progressed along so far that the preliminary organization of the corporation was effected last Saturday. At the meeting held on that day upwards of 2,300 shares were reported as having been subscribed. Less than seven hundred shares were reported necessary to start operations going. Since the meeting a most satisfactory letter has been received from the Directors of the Stearns Ranchos Company in reference to the enterprise, in which they make the announcement that they are ready to do everything within their power to help the project along. Unfortunately they had been advised that all the shares had been subscribed, and, acting upon that hypothesis, did not, of course, add their subscription to the list. The Directors further say that all land held by settlers under contract on the Stearns Ranchos may be bonded for best raising, and that all applications for that privilege on the part of the settlers will be cheerfully given. The people could certainly ask no more. Another letter has been dispatched them, conveying the information that several hundred acres are yet necessary to start things going, and urging upon them the importance of subscribing to a block of block. It is not too much to say that the land company is good at this moment for five hundred shares. They have thousands of acres of good beet land, now lying idle or used for pasture. Beyond question they will be the greatest beneficiaries by the establishment of the factory. Besides participating in the profits of the refinery and in the returns from beet culture, every acre of their land will be enhanced in value. Instead of selling at $50 per acre, the land will command a ready sale at $200 per acre. We feel perfectly assured that the Directors of the company will look at this great enter against the pest, and not to rely too strongly upon the parasite. Every one should fumigate; the parasite will do what is claimed for them after a while. A genuine sensation was developed in the Baltimore investigation at Mare Island on Tuesday—a thing entirely unexpected at this late stage of the proceedings. The case had dragged along slowly in the morning session, a number of sailors being recalled to testify as to the soberness of Riggin, Turnbull and Davidson, before and during the rut. After recess Surgeons Scott and White of the Baltimore took the stand. After testifying to the wounds of the members of the Baltimore's crew, they declared that the death of Turnbull was directly caused by neglect in the hospital, where he was carried by the police. The Chileans refused to allow the Baltimore surgeons to treat their men, and declined to do it themselves, except in a very superficial way. For four days the surgeons vainly begged Judge of Crimes Foster to allow them to remove the sailors to the Baltimore, but not till it became probable that Turnbull would soon die, would he grant them permission. The men were taken to the ship, but it was too late for Turnbull. Blood poisoning had set in and Turnbull died five days later. The surgeons were positive that death resulted from neglect and imperfect treatment in the hospital. The Sisters of Charity, who had charge, seemed to regret their inability to help the sailors, but bad to obey the orders of their superiors. From the summing up by the surgeons, it appears that as result of the mob, two sailors of the Baltimore were killed, five were seriously wounded, being disabled from nine to forty-four days, and twelve received alighter wounds, being disabled from two to eight days. A Washington special says that President Harrison is weary of the Chilean delay, and that Egan has been instructed to notify the Chilean Foreign Office that not only do we want a apetye reply, but still insist upon full repartition being made for the outrage upon the Baltimore sailors. It is understood that Egan replied on Tuesday, and that something detrimental from Chile may be expected in a few days. ROLL OF HONOR. The following is the roll of honor for the past month. MAX NEDELUNG The establishment of this great enterprise will redound to the good of this community in countless ways. It will be the first cooperative refinery to be erected in the United States, and will mark the dawn of a new era in a great industry that is destined to revolutionize the lot of the common farmer. In the time to come there will be hundreds of these co-operative factories in this country, distributing their wealth among the poorer classes, instead of binding it up in the hands of the favored few. Co-operation is the goal for which men have striven for a lifetime, only to find it fleeting from their grasp in the end. Here we have the glorious opportunity presented to us, and we shall be the first to demonstrate its practicability in this new industry to the people of the world. The factory will distribute $150,000 annually in this valley for beets. Its bounty from the government will amount to upwards of $100,000 per year, and it will burden no less than $64,000 annually among its employees. There are very few establishments in Southern California of such magnitude. And the farmers will be the greatest beneficiaries of it all. The refinery will make Anaheim a city of 5,000 inhabitants in a year, and will make us the trading center of the richest valley in the world. It has great things in store for us. Few people realize what incalculable good it will bring. If the Stearns Ranchos take the amount of stock that is reasonably expected of them, the books of the corporation will be closed before another issue of this paper. Those of our citizens who have not yet subscribed should do so without delay. They will have themselves to blame if they neglect to avail themselves of this, undoubtedly the greatest opportunity ever presented to them in this town. The party of Eastern capitalists who represent the Terminal Railway will be in Los Angeles Department—SEVENTH YEAR. ROLL OF HONOR The following is the roll of honor for the past month. They will have themselves to blame if they neglect to avail themselves of this, undoubtedly the greatest opportunity ever presented to them in this town. The party of Eastern capitalists who represent the Terminal Railway will be in Los Angeles next Sunday. They would have arrived several weeks ago but for their extended trip into Mexico. These capitalists will be in Anaheim some time during the coming week probably, and will be shown over the country. They come with the intention of looking over the land with a view to building their road this way. It is known that they are desirous of extending their road from Long Beach through this valley With one of the largest beet sugar refineries in the world in course of construction here, the building of the road will naturally be very much accelerated. We have no doubt that inside of the year the Terminal road will run from Long Beach through to Westminster and Garden Grove and on to this city to connect with the refinery. When the railroad magnates reach Anaheim we must put our best foot foremost, and take pains to show them what the possibilities of this valley are. If we can show them everything here that should reasonably claim their attention as railroad builders, we venture the assertion that the Terminal road will be built into this valley inside of ninety days. The semi-annual statement of the financial condition of the Bank of Anaheim is published this morning. As usual the bank makes a creditable showing. It is one of the solid institutions of the country, under shrewd management, and its business is to-day the equal of any similar institution in the country.
