Our esteemed trans-sandwash contemporary, the Fullerton Journal, which barely escapes a conniption fit every time it refers to this destined to be great railroad center, "slashes around" in its last issue to the following effect:
We have been told on good authority that the visits of the barber to this place on Sunday, from Anaheim, would be discontinued on account of the threatened boycott of some of the business men of that place.
We make haste to inform our esteemed contemporary that its authority for printing this outlandish statement is bad—very bad indeed. The business man of this city have a lively realization of the fact that, whether Fullerton have one barber or a dozen, is a question which concerns us very little. We are too busy talking railroad, and inaugurating other enterprises, to stop to consider the propriety of boycotting a harmless, inoffensive tonorial artist. The reason why the barber's visits to Fullerton were discontinued was simply because his business here suffered in consequence. His regular customers, desiring to be shaved on Sunday in order presumably to call upon their best girl, proceeded to get their mugs scraped at another shop. This loss of trade was not balanced by that which he secured at Fullerton, and so, purely as a business proposition, he remains at Anaheim on Sundays. But the idea that the gentleman was boycotted into remaining here, is ludicrous, novel, ingenious and funny. We have always a good word for Fullerton, and were it in our power, we should freely donate them a whole front row of barber shops. As we cannot do that at present the best that remains is for us to tender the good people of our flourishing trans-sandwash neighbor a cordial invitation to come and ride with us on the initial excursion over the Anaheim, Chino Valley and Ocean Railroad—see small bills for particulars. Next!
Our esteemed contemporary struggles on as follows:
A gentleman who is doing considerable shipping from this place told us that he had been taken to task for it by some of the business men of Anaheim, and as much as told that he had no business to ship from this place. Now this is a pretty state of affairs, certainly for us to spread out. It will do us a world of good to do so. Let us get together and talk oranges for a while.
From a letter received from Superintendent Atherton, of the ostrich farm at Placentia, we learn that the first ostriches were brought to this State by a gentleman of the name of Protheroe and farmed at Centralia. The birds, twenty-two in number, were subsequently sold to the California Ostrich Farming Company. According to Superintendent Atherton a farmer with twenty birds would probably (the sex being equal) hatch 150 chicks per year, and lose ten percent of this number. This, he says, is a very low estimate. The Placentia farm has 133 birds, and costs $1,500 per year, to maintain exclusive of rental of land and taxes. These birds will be sold at auction a week from Wednesday next. We have heard no reason assigned for the sale except that the owners, many of whom live in San Francisco, desire to discontinue the business. To the right man these birds would not a handsome profit.
Full grown birds are valued at $500. Those at the farm, 133 in number, even though they bring one-half their value, would come to $33,250. At its market value, the catrich farm is worth in the neighborhood of $70,000.
A NUMBER OF Cincinnati capitalists are turning their attention to providing irrigation in California, and have incorporated under the laws of Kentucky as the Arrowhead Reservoir Company, with a capital of $1,000,000, for the purpose of constructing reservoirs in the mountains near San Bernardino for storing water to be used in the valley for irrigation. Among the incorporators is Editor Holt, of Moreno.
It is in very bad taste indeed for the Santa Ana Press to reflect upon the ladies of Anaheim, after what has happened.

Our esteemed contemporary struggles on as follows:
A gentleman who is doing considerable shipping from this place told us that he had been taken to take it by some of the businessmen of Anaheim, and as much as told that he had no business to ship from this place. Now this is a pretty state of affairs, certainly. If a man hasn't the right to ship from where he pleases, and carry on his business, where he likes, the sooner we know it the better. It is only evil-minded persons who use underhanded means to accomplish their ends.
If the above "item" has sufficient truth in it to justify its publication at all, it should be accompanied by names, places, dates and the other various paraphernalia usually found at hand in well-regulated newspaper offices. The statement is absurd upon its face, and we opine is only printed to let the writer vent his spleen upon the "business men of Anaheim." He will get well. He should take some pills, bathe his head in tepid water and take a brisk walk in the open air.
No one who knows Nelson Hawks, the staid and matter-of-fact genius who made so much trouble for the type founders by originating the "point system," could believe that he ever stooped to such depths of folly as to attend the opera, and yet he does so, and can whistle off a bar from "Gipay Baron" or "Norma" as well as the rest of them. Hawks was a great admirer of Emma Abbott in her day, and as a testimonial of esteem made the songstress' engraving of herself, wonderfully artistic and true to nature, the pleasure of presenting her with which, however, he was debarred by the hand of death. The engraving was presented to the dead songstress' sister, who lives in Chicago, and who praises the work very highly indeed. In the letter acknowledging the receipt of the engraving, she enclosed as a memento of her sister, a piece of the silver-dotted veil which Abbott wore in the balcony scene of "Romeo and Juliet," and which, the letter goes on to say, she had kissed upwards of a thousand times. This rare and soul-stirring souvenir is very highly prized by its possessor. The veil, except such shreds as were taken from it for keepsakes, was placed in the coffin with the dead and afterwards cremated along with the remains. It is a delicate, dumb, and entrancing remembrancer of the gifted and beautiful songstress, who has passed to her reward in the realms of paradise. Viewing it, one sees again the picture of the departed, full in the flush of her fascinating loveliness, caroling sweet as larks at heaven's gate. In many respects Abbott's voice was the peer of Patil's; her trill, sweet as that of the thrush, was possibly quite as superb. This mute 10-memberer, so frail a breath of air might Gee Whiz.

The next semi-annual meeting of the Southern California Pomological Society will be held at South Riverside, Thursday, April 2d, beginning at 10:30 A.M. Business of importance will come before this meeting, and discussions of importance will be had. Too much importance cannot be attached to these meetings. To insure the best success we must get together as often as twice a year and compare notes, discuss our various ways of doing things and devise methods of improvement in raising and marketing our crops. The citizens of South Riverside are preparing to give the society a hearty welcome. Lot there be a grand rally of soil-tillers at this meeting.

Accident as the Mine.
Saturday noon an accident occurred at the Saintigo Company's mine which came near resulting fatally. One of the miners, named J. Ruiz, was working on an incline where the rains had soaped through the roof, making the earth and rock soft, when a cave occurred, a mass of rock striking the workman in the side. He was taken out at once and medical aid summoned. Dr. Hunt attended him Sunday morning, and reports the injured man as resting easy, with no bones broken. The accident was due solely to the miner's negligence, as the foreman of the mine had told him to put in timbers before proceeding with his work the same morning.

Those of our young men who have served their time as guardamen in the ranks of Company G should scout the idea of doing anything else than re-enlisting. The term of many of the guardsmen expires with this month, and the new roster should be made up by the first of April. If Anaheim could form a military company three years ago, it certainly ought to be able to do as much to day. Still we are informed that many of the members are reluctant about re-enlisting. This aversion should by all means be overcome. At this evening's meeting there should be fifty men sufficiently alive to the interests of our city to enlist and maintain our part of the militia.
Mrs. O'Shea refuses to wed with Parnell, and Buena Park is to have a newspaper. What surprises we are continually running against, to be sure!
Now that it has been decided to get up an Orange county exhibit to go along with the Citrus Fair to Chicago, we suggest that our orange growers get together and help out as much as possible. Santa Ana and the other towns of the county are going right ahead and doing all in their power to make this county's exhibit the peer of any in the Windy City's exhibition. We cannot afford to let them distance us in this very important matter. We raise the finest oranges in this county—fruit as fine as any in the State. The Chicago Fair is just the place
