The restricted space for news matter, caused by the unexpected pressure upon our columns of an unusually lengthy delinquent tax list, compels us to hold over some very interesting communications and editorial matter upon local topics until our next issue. The Editor is away this week in attendance upon the semi-annual ghost dance of the Southern California Editorial Association at Los Angeles. Signal fires were observed in that direction last night and the night before, and it is reported that about a hundred editors are off their reservations and dancing. As a consequence The Gazette appears this morning in enlarged form and more readable than ever. The convention lasts until this evening. The Board of Directors of the Anaheim Union Water Company met on Saturday afternoon. Considerable of the time was taken up in hearing the committee from the irrigation district discourse upon the necessity of the water company agreeing to sell their stock upon a bond basis. The discussion was merely preliminary to a further discussion to be entered into at the annual meeting of the stockholders of the water company to be held on the 24th inst. At this meeting a full representation of shareholders should be present, as besides discussing this important question, a Board of Directors is to be elected for the ensuing year. planted in the State outside of the valley. The total consumption of raisins in the United States is 370,000 boxes annually, and in view of these facts the Commissioner advises the viticulturist to study the future of the industry carefully before planting any more raisin vineyards. He also discourages the planting at present of more wine vineyards. The demand for California wines, it is thought, will in a few years exceed the supply. The receipts at New York this year were 3,608,000 gallons by water, while the shipments by rail amounted to 4,900,000 gallons. The arrivals of California brands showed a corresponding increase, being 230,000 gallons by ship and 400,000 gallons by rail. A consultation of Senator Hearat's physicians, it is said, reached the decision that the senator is suffering of cancer of the colon or large intestine, and that there is absolutely no hope for his recovery. It would be a wise idea for our orchardists to come together and do the same thing. Already we hear of one or two of them preparing to ship their crops, and the practice should become universal. The orange buyers should be taught a lesson. The Ontario people want to create Ohinó county, Pomona wants Pomona county, the Riversiders want Riverside county, and the San Jacintoites want San Jacinto county. This will do very well for the divisionists of the south. With the aid of their brethern of the north, we should not be at all surprised to hear of several new counties created in this Legislature. The Government exhibit at the World's Fair promises to be an imposing one. The building, so far as at present planned, will be nearly square, covering 150,000 feet of floor space, and will have an ornamental facade, with a main entrance something like the Arc de Triomphe at Paris. In the middle will rise a pagoda-like tower, beneath which will be a large rotunda. The building will cost $1,000,000, and $100,000, it is calculated, will be spent upon the exhibition and its annexes. The Navy Department will probably be represented by a fac-simile of one of the new warships, with a crew of sailors and marines and all the latest naval appliances. The War Department's exhibit will embrace a display of improved small arms and big fortification appliances, an agreeing to sell their stock upon a bond basis. The Indian Bureau will show the progress of the aboriginal races and the Fish Commissioners will exhibit the latest fishery appliances and aquariums containing big and little inhabitants of the sea. The Treasury Department will show how paper money and stamps are made. The whole display of the Government will be far ahead of that made at the Centennial, where $80,000 was devoted to the construction of the building and half a million to the display it contained. The Viticultural Commissioner for the San Joaquin district, in his annual report, says that the raisin business is the chief interest of the grape-growers of the San Joaquin valley. There are 2,300 vineyard proprietors in the valley, and 56,430 acres planted in raisins grapes, 20,000 of which are in bearing, but not half of these in full bearing.
