FARM NOTES. The poultry departments are gradually becoming the leading features at some State fairs. The farmer who can afford to grow a crop of weeds can afford to grow something better, as land that will produce a dense growth of weeds will usually produce a good crop of any kind. Experiments show that Paris green is preferable to London purple as an insecticide on peach trees. One part of Paris green to three hundred parts of water is the proportion used. The London purple, though efficacious, injures the leaves of the trees. Teach the boy to do his farm work so that it will be admired, and you give him something to think about that adds rest to his work. Teach him to be neat and tasteful in his work as in dress, and you develop valuable qualities, such as may hold him to the farm. Professor Pailey suggests as a remedy for the curculia that carbolized plaster be applied profusely to the tree when the dew is on. To make this powder, stir one part of carbolic acid into fifty pounds of lanolin plaster, or quick lime may be slacked with the acid. September is considered the most favorable month for having the fall pigs farrowed. Such pigs are used for producing large hogs next season. Unless extra large hogs are desired it is preferable to have the pigs farrowed in the spring, thereby avoiding the keeping of them over winter. It is not wisdom to kill harmless snakes, such as the garter snake or the black snake. They serve a valuable purpose in reducing the number of roltons and some kinds of raptiles. The black snake is an inveterate enemy of the rattle snake, and kills the latter wherever it is found. In Europe the donkey is in use by those who prefer an animal that entails but a small expense to keep, and, as they are well broken, children find much enjoyment with them. There is no reason why the donkey should not be used in this country for many purposes to which it is well adapted. A teaspoonful of tincture of iron in the drinking water (about a gallon of water) will be all that is necessary to invigorate the hens that are shielding their feathers, but such hens must be fed on nutritious food. The hens that are moulting now will make the winter layers, and should receive extra oats. Whale-oil soap and carbolic acid, in quantity of one pound of soap to one ounce of acid, dissolved in five pounds of warm water, will keep the borer out of apple trees. Apply two or three times during the growing season. If the egg is already laid, watch and kill the borer as soon as its work begins to appear. The State Agricultural Colleges and Institutes each receive a certain sum from the MISCELLANEOUS Copyright, 1895 KISSED ANOTHER MAN'S WIFE. "You accustomed," pulled young Jacob Green. At his good neighbor Brown, "I you kind my wife upon the street, I ought to knock you down." That's where you're wrong." good Brown replied. In accepts mild and sweet; "I kissed her; that I've not denied But I kissed her on the cheek and I did so because she looked so handsome—the very picture of beauty and health. What is the secret of it? "Well," replied Green, "since you ask it. I will tell you; she uses Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription. I accept your apology. Good night." An unhealthy woman is rarely if ever beautiful. The popular disease to which so many of the sex are subject, are prolific causes of pale, shallow faces, blotched with unsightly pimples, dull, lustreless eyes and emaciated forms. Women so afflicted can be permanently cured by using Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription; and with the restoration of health comes that beauty which combined with good qualities of beard and heart, makes women angels of loveliness. "Favorite Prescription" is the only medicine for women, sold by druggists, under a positive guarantee from the manufacturers, that it will give satisfaction in every case, or money will be refunded. It is a positive specifie for leucorrhea, painful menstruation, unnatural suppressions, prolapse, or falling of the womb, weak back, anteversion, retroversion, bearing-down sensations, chronic congestion, inflammation and ulceration of the womb. WORLD'S DISPENSARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, Manufacturers, Buffalo, N.Y. DR. PIERGE'S PELLETS Purely Vegetable. Gently Laxative, or Cathartic according to size of dose. By druggists. 25 cents a visit. R. The hens that are moulting now will make the winter layers, and should receive extra care. The State Agricultural Colleges and Institutes each receive a certain sum from the United States Government. The boy who attends them is made to do military duty, and is also taught mechanics, but botany, stock-raising, analytical chemistry, veterinary sciences and practical agricultural are the leading studies. It will cost less to get the animals fat before the winter than it will to tatten them during the winter. To keep the animal warm while the fattening process is occurring costs something in the shape of food. Get all the animals intended to be marketed into the best possible condition before the winter sets in. In summer plenty of air should circulate in the poultry-house. Do not crowd the hens, as they give off heat from their bodies, and raise the temperature to a high degree. During the daytime leave all the doors and windows open, so as to keep the house from absorbing heat as much as possible, and also be careful that lice are not present. The best manure to apply around peach trees is that which is well rotted. What is called compost is preferable to fresh manure from the stable. The peach tree is a rapid grower, and an estimate of the new wood made by a healthy tree, with the quantity of fruit during a favorable season, will show that the tree takes a large proportion of plant food from the soil. Farmers who grow cats and cut the crop when the grain is in the milky stage save threshing and handling of the grain. If oats are out in the green condition the nutrition that would be deposited in the grain is arrested in the stalk, and the result is that the straw is not only more nutritious but more digestible. In preparing the ground for oats another season keep the above in view. Sulphur fumes are destructive to lice, and to all other forms of life. If sulphur is burned in a poultry-house, it will avoid nothing unless the house is made as near air-tight as possible. First, close all the cracks, holes or entrances, touch a match to the sulphur (first pouring a little alcohol around it, to assist in the burning), get outside quickly, shut the door, and leave the house closed for two hours, when the process should be repeated. J. S. GARDINER, Secretary Anaheim Irrigation District. A safe-opening test which in sensational accomplishments discounts the wonderful feats of Johnstone, the mind reader, took place in the Hotel Wayne in Chicago early on Tuesday morning. The operator was Henry E. Adams, a young man from Minneapolis, who came to Chicago some weeks ago and took rooms at the Wayne. There he became acquainted with a young man who, although Adams did not know this, was a coadmin of the proprietor. Within the past few days Adams proposed to him to rob the hotel safe. He was to get up at 4 o'clock in the morning and do this. The hotel proprietor was advised by his cousin, who at the same time pretended to be an accomplice in Adam's plot. Two detectives were hidden in the office last night and this morning at the appointed time Adams came in. The wondering officers watched him without tools or explosives prepare to open the massive safe, although it was evident he did not know the combination. He paraded the nail of the index finger until the blood vessels were exposed. Then by placing the sensitive wound on the knob of the combination look he could distinguish the tumblers as they fell. For an hour he worked while the detectives sarcoily dared to breathe. At last there was a sharp clink and Adams swung back the door. With a sight of relief he reached into the safe and laid his hands on a package of bills. But much to his discomfiture the officers stopped forward at the same moment and placed him under arrest. Fly times are open. Pursue 'Healing Liaison' is guaranteed to keep them away from any men. For sale by W. M. Hughen Draggin. BANK OF ANAHEIM CAPITAL STOCK, $100,000.00. PLEZ JAMES...FRANCIS GEORGE V.
