Our exposure of the notorious Sanitas Fraternia last Thursday proved to be the sensation of the week. Not many of the people of the valley were conversant with the salacious state of affairs existing among the vegetarians. Many years ago these free lovers were arrested on a charge of starving their children, by compelling them to assist on a diet of raw vegetables. Two of the children died and the members of the fraternity were arranged in court on a charge of cruelty to children. Although there was not much doubt as to their culpability the accused were quitted for lack of evidence. The arrest, however, brought them immediately into disrepute with their neighbors and the people of the valley. Certain exposures of their practices in the impersonation of ghostly visitors, some years later, served to lighten the scene of the citizens of Placentia to a considerable extent. But it has been reserved for us to make public the local nature of the society, and the people of the community are now prepared to adapt our methods to circumstances.
The Sanitas Fraternia, all this reports about its members are true, and there is not much doubt on that score as a best up in the fair name of Placentia. Our members understand and appreciate the situation well. That they may rid themselves of the worst than Moran indictment of the moral plan is the hope and desire of their many friends. We have received a letter from a citizen of Placentia. Sanitas Fraternia indigent at the state of affairs existing among the vegetarians who lay in their prompt extermination. For this present, the letter is withheld, but the following extract will serve to show what we know about the matter.
Sanitas Fraternia, since the peace of the Hidele final settlement and their plans and purpose of prosecution and their abstention in their efforts to make Mrs. Straus and daughter members of their party, the talk among the neighbors has been earnest and serious at the fact of so many bodies being held in pollution in our model, and taking an organized body to disperse this symptomous tree lives skalking in the Sierra Madre are now raiding along the border. Mexico has been talking about compelling them to return to the United States. They may be coming of their own accord, but they come in no questionable shape that we can better do without them. With the San Carlos Reservation at one end of the line and the Sierra Madre at the other border, raiding is merely a picnic for those reckless savages. The breaking up of the reservation and removal of its occupants would deprive the hostiles of one base of operations beside opening a valuable country to civilization.
OUR BOYS AT SAN DIEGO.
They Take a Game and Lose One to the May City Ladies.
A picked nine of ball players from Anaheim and Santa Ana went down to San Diego on Saturday and played a game in the afternoon with the Schiller & Morthas of that place. On Sunday they crossed bats with the San Diego. A small crowd witnessed the game on Saturday, which resulted in a victory for our boys by a score of 9 to 8. Cummings and Metzoffin did the twirling and Harris wore the mask. The game was an interesting one and was not decided until the last half of the ninth inning, when the Anaheim team scored four runs, which gave them the game amid great applause from the grand stand.
The San Diego won Sunday's game by a score of 4 to 3. Harris and Metzoffin formed the battery for the visitors. About 300 people were in attendance and took great interest in the game. In the eighth inning the Anaheim club led by a score of 3 to 2. The crowd began to disperse everybody thinking that Anaheim had won, but when, in the last half of the ninth, a San Diego got to first on balls, with two men out, the crowd went wild and exercised their hung with yells that could be heard over at Coronado. The noise rattled the players somewhat, and two tallies were scored by the bay and climate people, amd deafening cries for the victors. It was a very narrow escape for the lads of the city of bay and climate, and the opinion was general that if the spectators had kept their seats and not broken into the play ground the Anaheim boys would have won the game. The toys are all enthusiastic in their praises of the San Diego people, however, and were treated like lords by the southern ladls. It is probable that another series of games will be played between the San Diego and a picked nine of Orange county players in the near future.
The San Diego Union has the following account of both games: A small but enthusiastic crowd watched the boys from up-

Eaton (1923). Since the proof of the Hube final settlement and their plan and purpose of prescribing and their defeat in their efforts to make Mrs Straan and daughter members of their party, the talk among the neighbors has been earnest and serious at the last of so many a body of pollution in our model, and taking an organized body of persons this sympathetic to these layers is freely indulged in. After the truss last week, and the exposure through the prairie the neighborhood holds further attention, and insisted by the importation of an abatement of a woman and children to their nearby society. Just the indication takes shape to back up their host of nominal complaints.
In our local colony will be found a connection from Mr. and Mrs. Straan, denying that they are members of the fraternity of vegetarians. Mr. Straan admits there was a thread of truth in our last weeks' article, but denies that he was persuaded to move his house through fear of ghosts. Although we allowed us to that he favored cooperation to a certain extent, he has resolved to draw the line at the San Diego Fraternia.
As will be inferred from their透射 printed above, a new family has come to join the free lovers. This gross additional cause for indignation on the part of the state neghborhood. The final outcome of the affair will be watched with considerable interest by the people of the valley.
San Bernardino Truck Lines is greatly exasperated over the threatened importation of Anaheim's orange trees into that locality, and says:
We are informed on reliable authority that parties are preparing to bring in seeded orange trees from the vicinity of Anaheim. It would be well for the big commissioners to investigate the matter.
As San Bernardino's long inspectors were down to see us a couple of weeks ago about this very thing, and as they returned home not only impressed with the fact that our seeded orange trees were perfectly tree from scale, but took a large number of trees along with them, the wall of our contemporary comes rather late and can have bit little of it. If our San Bernardino brethern would, they could specially find out that we have as fine orange orchards and as clean trees here as they have in their favored county Danger from scale is with us a thing of the past. That we had to apply the gas treatment and other methods of long extermination is no discreet to us. Rivers lie beneath, we are rehably informed, took the precaution to do that same thing. A visually our section by our contemporary will convince him that he is "backing up the wrong tree when he produces that harm will come to San Bernardino's citrus culture by importing our seeded orange trees.
The San Diego Union has the following account of both games: A small but enthusiastic crowd watched the boys from upcountry defeat the S & M.'s Saturday afternoon. The game looked as if the home club would be sure winners until the last half of the ninth innning, when the Anaheims brunched their hits and made four runs which placed them in the lead for good. The game as a whole was excellent, and the crowd that saw it went away satisfied that they had seen a first-class game of ball. The chances are that the Anaheims would have won hands down if their regular pitcher had arrived in time to pitch for them. [We presume reference is made to Sporty Wetzel.] Sunday's game was one of the best ever seen on the San Diego diamond. Very few people thought that the San Diego were in it after the last of the ninth innning. The score stood 3 to 2 in favor of the strangers in the ninth innning, with two men out. Mr. White of Tia Juana was given his base on balls, as the pitcher was a little anxious to catch the 10 clock train for home. Tomis was next up. White stole second like a flash, and made a still more brilliant steal to third, just as Tomis made a two bagger, bringing in White and tying the score, amid the great applause of the San Diegoans. Latham then picked up a wagon tongue and made a beatiful hit, scoring Tomis and winning the game, amid the greatest noise that was heard for a long time at Recreation Park. The strangers put up great ball. Their battery was very good and they received good support. The San Diego played good, steady ball and batted well.
The visiting nine was composed of Captain Wommer, Win Metollin, L. Koerner, Harry Cummings, George Peters, Tommy Harlin, "Shorty" Mosbaugh and Garnsey. Oscar Luedka, Secretary of the club, went down and witnessed the games.
The Fullerton Cut Off Abandoned.
It is now said that the California Southern Railroad Company have abandoned the idea of building "cut off" between Richfield and Fullerton, as the owners of the land over which the right of way is sought desire to be compensated therefor.
Hudson's Nerve.
Santa Ana Blade, May 23
A charge of embezzlement was to have been ventilated by Justice Marks yesterday. Alonzo Phillips, the excursion agent, intrusted some business connected with his line in the hands of D.W. Hudson of Anaheim. A shortage on the part of Hudson was the result, and Phillips preferred the charge mentioned. Hudson gave bonds for his appearance, and in the mean time managed to pay the deficit, and the charge was not pressed. Yesterday, when the case was called, Hudson was quite independent, and with a nonbalance worthy of any disinterested party, produced a dispatch from Phillips acknowledging the receipt of the $55. This Hudson supposed, freed him from all further trouble in the matter, but his haughty demeanor thereupon was short-lived.

That we had to apply the gas treatment and other methods of bug extermination is no discredit to us. Ever since it, we are reliably informed, took the precaution to do that same thing. A visit our section by our contemporary will convince him that he is "sharking up the wrong tree" when he produces that harm will come to San Bernardo's citrus culture by importing our seeded orange trees.
The item published in our columns a couple of weeks ago, regarding the healthy appearance of two vineyards at Orange, should have been credited to our excellent contemporary, the News. Had we taken it from the columns of our contemporary at first hand, the error would not have been committed. The News is one of the most welcome exchanges to our sanctum, and we feel that we honor ourselves in quoting from its columns always with the proper credit. But the malvertency of not giving proper credit will at times creep into the best regulated newspaper household. We notice, by the way, speaking of this liability, that our article on the monumenting of the county line between Orange and Los Angeles appeared in the Alhambra Review last week, masquerading under a credit to the Orange Post. How is this gentlemen" and ladies, too!
Edition Smith of the San Diego Sun stigmatized the Mexicans as being invincible in peace and invisible in war. Col. Ferrer of the Mexican army characterized this as a "low and base expression," and challenged Smith to fight a duel, either with pistols, swords or fists. Editor Smith has not yet designed to reply, but he is quoted as saying that if Colonel Ferrer will but come around to the Sun office, he (Smith) will punch his (Ferrer's) Mexican nose. Up to the hour of going to press Ferrer's nose had not yet hove in sight.

Los Angeles Herald
The Herald's tramp reporter took a run down to Anaheim yesterday. There may morning it is something of a variation for a newspaper man to get up early instead of lying ahead until nearly high noon, and to his him away, to the country, through orchard, meadow and vineyard, to breathe the air made sweet with the scent of the new hay or laden with the perfume of orange flowers. As he bowls along over the fine tracks of the Southern Pacific, he is often tempted to hum the refrain of the variety show song of the Howery, in New York, thirty years ago, which runs:
Oh! bless me, this is pleasant, riding on the rail.
The tracks of the company are kept in the best possible condition, and a run to Pomona or Anaheim, about thirty miles from the city, takes only about an hour. The returning trains leave these points about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, and it is astonishing how much a diligent man, like a reporter always, can get through with five or six hours.
Well, it was Anaheim yesterday. The train pulled out of the Arcade depot on time, the accommodating conductor, Frank Curtis, in command, and shot away through the orchards of the south end of the city, and those of Vernon, all rich with their new spring dress of young leaves. The walnut trees have donned their brand new suits of the tandest green from the ground up. The peach, apricot, plum and other deciduous trees are all quite as resplendent, all in new livies from top to toe. They may differ a little in hue, but it is all of some shade of Robin Hood's favorite color. The orange trees are satisfied to take their old dress of last year, which is rich enough for a woodland queen of trees, and run an edge of new green trimming all around it. The rich green of the old part is still rich and fresh, and the new edging of the livelier pink pinks it out in a charming contrast that shines down all her fellows, although their dress is all apic and span new.
Florence, Nailean, Vinvale, Downey, Carmelita, Norwalk, Buena Park and Brookhurst were reached and passed, and soon the familiar name of Anaheim was called. Here was the Mecca for the day of the reporter, and the street car waiting at the depot soon landed the passengers for the old colony in the center of town a mile from the depot.
What is there new to say about Anaheim? Who does not know all about the colony, the first one founded in California? It founding dates away back to 1856, a few years after the discovery of gold and the landing of the Argonauts. The people who colonized Anaheim came to do better work than dig gold. They came to demonstrate the fact that all the territory of California is a mine of gold, and that in her fertile agricultural soil lies wealth richer than all her deposits of gold and silver, and wealth that Old Pallers, United Workmen and other association here furnishing hedge. There are good halls for meetings in the here.
Anaheim is well supplied with mines. The public school buildings are the pride of the people. There is no turn in the main where school grounds are so well set with fine shade trees. The teachers are competent and painting. A year ago a student of the Catholic Church spread a fine school in Anaheim. Angle grounds had been snares and a fine brick building created. He popular has the school proved that it is now fall of people, and an addition forty feet long is to be put up at once to accommodate the increasing membership.
Buenas Park House.
Editor Gazette.-The new Southern Pacific depot has just received a fine coat of paint and is now ready for the agent.
M. Baker of Santa Ana is building a $3,000 hotel on Grand avenue. It is what has long been needed at the Park.
J. A. Whitaker commences to move his store down near the Southern Pacific Railroad this week.
At last the country around the Park is being supplied with good roads. Everybody has earned out to help the Roadmaster not only to pay their road-tax, but in putting in extra time gratitiously. The read from Buenas Park to Artemia is about completed; also the extension of Grand avenue to Centralia.
Buena Park is quite a shipping point at present. For the past month there have been eight four-borne teams hauling sheep manure to be shipped to Riverdee for orange trac.
The milk factory is increasing their output of condensed milk and coffee.
Nearly every day people come to the Park looking for land and a good many locale here. Among the recent arrivals and purchasers are Alexander Dercoux of Santa Monica, John Tanner of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Merrill of Los Angeles.
Miss Griffin of Alhambra is visiting at D. J. Young's residence.
E. E. McCullough left for San Francisco last week.
The Ladies' Society have purchased a fine organ to be used in the hall.

ange shipments from Anaheim for the year come to about 35,000 boxes. This is more than 100 carloads, and the value is upwards of $50,000. That sounds pretty well for a little place of 2,000 inhabitants to derive in the way of income for one crop of one kind of fruit. The walnut crop of Anaheim is only second in importance, whether from the standpoint of its magnitude or that of its profit, to oranges.
Another industry in which Anaheim stands as the full equal of any part of the section is that of live-stock production. The horses, sheep, cattle and swine of this district are pre-eminent in their quality. Its lush grasses and big cereal crops make this a secure proposition. Big dairies abound all around Anaheim. Great blocks of sheep whiten the plains in all directions. This is one of the principal points in the section for the shipment of fine woolls.
One of the first things the pioneers of Anaheim went into was vine-growing and wine-making. For years the products of her wineries in sweet wines or dry were the beat in the State. The terrible vine disease came during the decade now closing and laid waste the vineyards all around Anaheim. In some of the cellars are still found a few puncheons of grape juice of the purest quality and of the most approved quality in soundness, dryness, sweetness, aroma, flavor or bouquet. For the present the industry is almost annihilated, but with signs of speedy rehabilitation. The disease is thought by the best informed men to have run its course, and in a few years Anaheim will be as famous as ever for its wines. Some of the more adventurous are already setting out new vineyards.
The barley and hop crops mount no feather about Anaheim, and with a plentiful supply of good water here are all the materials to make a fine quality of beer. Mr. Conrad has put up a fine brewery near the Southern Pacific depot. It is well equipped and will in a short time put on the market its first special brew of new and genuine lager beer, from made materials grown on the spot.
From the hills north of Anaheim a great deal of asphaltum is taken out and shipped away to pave streets of the cities of Southern California. There is a good deal of mining being done in these hills on both sides of the Santa Ana river, some of silver claims paying well. There is a fine vein of coal uncovered in the hills, which is soon to be worked, and a company has been formed to bore for oil.
Anaheim is well supplied with good stores, and all the minor industries incident to such a place.
The Catholic, Episcopal, Congregational Methodist, Presbyterian and Lutheran churches all have houses of worship and good congregations at Anaheim. The Masonry,

Among the cabin pammengers on the steamer Augusta Victoria, which arrived in New York from Hamburg on Saturday, was Herman Kempinski, a Russian by birth and a naturalized American citizen. He was on his way to his home in Bridgeport, after having spent thirteen months in a Russian prison on a charge of evading military duty. He was accompanied by his wife and two little girls, who remained near him while he was confined in jail. They had returned to Russia to visit their parents, and the husband was arrested without charges. Kempinski falls an interesting story of his experience and his wife's efforts to secure his release. She first applied to Wartsz, the American Consul, who promised to intercede but nothing more was heard of him. A few months later a friend coming to America laid the case before Summary Bayard, but the correspondence which followed had no result. A friend; a few months ago laid the case before Summary Bayard, who according to Kempinski's story, notified Wartsz to demand the princess's release, and
