JATE NEWS OF THE WEEK. Normal Opening of the Olive Mill. Many Representative People Present to Witness the Start-Up - The Property Turned Over to the Stockholders by the Builders - The National Mains in the Irrigation District - Board of Supervisors. A day was the day set by the Olive Company for the formal opening of the mill. Invitations to attend the initial premises had been sent to many people throughout the county. By 10 a large number of ladies and gentlemen arrived. The visitors came in buggy carriages and a large contingent by Quite a delegation of citizens from the town were early on the ground, accompanied by a representative of this journal. The mill, it was found that the machinery was being given a final look at by the builders, and bolts here and there being tightened. Belta were beervirveted, and a general supervision was given the machinery, preparatory to finally turning it over to the stockholders. After all parts had been given, looking after, and the contractors as it were, a final leave of the machine. The Leffel turbine wheels were set in position, and the mill, hitherto wrapped in metal not to say mysterious silence, remained from cellar to attic with the creak of tightened belts, the sound of slowly driving wheels, and the subdued noise of the scarcely moving separators. Of course, there seemed to be a greater force started to the water wheel, and in another moment the mill was humming its old acorned tune, so sweet to the stockholders that countenances were wrapped all in their consequence. The singing tune of the water wheel was soon lost in the rattle corn sheller. The mill was all animalized and seemed to be doing its level best as the visitors. Belta spun swiftly polished wheels and shot through temperatures in the floor. The trembling told of the tremendous pressure to which the building was being subjected. Two wagonloads of corn on the cob were loaded at the side of the outer hopper. The pink tint of the peach and apricot blossoms is also to be seen in profusion, and the surrounding country is covered with rich grass that rivals a springtime clover. Sold. Placentia is one of the most lovely places in Southern California, and the residents have a pardonable pride in the beauty of their main thoroughfare, lined here and there as it is with tall badges of wavy poplar, cyprus and mapla trees, green these days in their spring-time luxuriance. The Damage Case Against H. Werder. In the suit for $10,000 damages brought by Rasmna Peterson against H. Werder, mention of which has already been made in these columns, the following demurrer has been filed: In the Superior Court of the County of Orange, and State of California. EDITOR GAZETTE — Your article in last week's Gazette relative to the grammar school course for schools was exactly to the point. I have often wondered since coming The Grammar Grade Course. Editor Gazette.—Your article in last week's Gazette relative to the grammar school course for schools was exactly to the point. I have often wondered since coming to Southern California why so few grammar school course schools are found in this portion of the State. I find on examining the school law, Section 444 of Political Code, that it is the duty of the Controller to decide how much money in the aggregate is necessary to raise three dollars for each pupil in the State enrolled in the grammar school course; that this assessment is made in all the counties regardless of their enrollment in this course; that this money when raised is apportioned among the counties in proportion to their enrollment in this course. Last year the Controller decided to raise $75,000 for this purpose. Los Angeles county, with her one hundred million of assessed valuation, pays her share of that lavy and draws back three dollars of it for each of her twenty-three grammar school course pupils. This consideration, however, is only of minor importance. The questions proper for consideration are: (1.) Will it benefit the schools and the pupils of the school? (2.) Will it benefit the community? Some one has said, and wisely: "If we aim at the moon, our arrows may never strike the target, but they will fly higher than if aimed at some terrestrial object." If we set before the pupils a high ideal, though they never reach it, they will do better work and secure better results, because of that ideal. If these higher grades were added it would not only benefit those who participated and are directly reached, but it would also stimulate and encourage a majority of pupils of the lower grades. It is my belief that if this course were added to these schools the average number finishing the grammar grade (or ninth year) would be materially increased. It would be of special benefit to those families desiring higher education for their sons and daughters, as they could be kept a longer time under the parental eye and the expenses of traveling and boarding from home for two years be saved. It would be of general benefit to the community in a variety of ways. It would, if properly conducted, attract pupils (the more advanced) from the adjoining districts. It would increase the general intelligence of the people by increasing the intelligence of the young men and young ladies, and thus make the community attractive to the home seeker. I have named only a few of the benefits. But how may they be secured? The trustees may see Section 1663, Political Code, by petition or otherwise, call a meeting of the electors, at which meeting the electors have power to instruct the trustees to buy or sell real estate, to add the additional course, or to transact any other business, notice for which has been given in the call. Let every one who is interested in the matter, talk it to his neighbor, and vote it when the opportunity is given; and thus assist his community in keeping pace with the Ramna Peterson, plaintiff, vs. H. der, defendant. — Demurrer to complaint. After lunch the party was photographed, another picture of the group having been taken earlier in the day, while the party were at the mill. A return was made to the mill and many of the guests took their departure for their homes. While waiting for President Schorn, who was still in attendance at the meeting of Directors, our reporter struck up an acquaintance with the nightwatchman, an extremely affable and accommodating gentleman in shirt sleeves and long red whiskers. Judge Blum and Professor Landend have been in and out of town during the week, looking at the orange crop. John Locust of Los Angeles was in town one day last week. He says it is not unlikely that he may return to residue in Amishia in the near future. H. C. Kallig has been elected delegate of Invisible Pastor to the Grand Lodge of Mattea Sana, which made at China on April fifth. Omar R. Leadka was elected alternate. F.
