DECAY THE BREATH OF LIFE.
Suddenness and death are apparent, they greet us on every hand;
There is no insignificant substance in air, in me or in the land.
Death, rain, decay, will confuse us—Oh! where shall we find rest and peace?
And managers of all, this destruction means none how to hast at increase.
The beautiful flavor of the springtime brings something that whispers of love:
Cordials are bowerd of wedlock, true wedlock, that's sanctioned above;
And manners and piña, waiting, decay for the offspring to come,
And the flowers from the ashen upspringing a new that and fragrance have won.
The fire that burns over our cities, and leaves only iron and stone.
Burnman but a process creative and burns into turret and dome;
And the fames kindle feelings half dormant and sympathy waits from her sleep.
And brothers unhard of respond to the call and tenderly dry eyes that weep.
But above all these fields no material we trace the same principle higher—
Into the realm of the spirit, which expands through destruction and fire.
Old customs, old forms and old errors are moss-grown and hidden by rust.
And the soul's larger growth demands just the food that springs from their ashes and dust.
Do you notice that the new feet are stronger, and carry the faith far beyond?
The old theoretical truth that you have been reading most?
And, if holder grown, it should scale the high fence and see fields man never has trod—
Then welcome the sight and sing loud for joy, for it tells us of progress toward God.

French Marriage Law.
An oft repeated and oft neglected warning to English girls about to marry Frenchmen is repeated in an English journal. It does not yet seem to be understood that, though a woman may be married to a Frenchman according to all the forms of the English law, she is not necessarily married in France. The French law still requires that the aboard and appointed form of asking the head of the bridegroom's family to consent to a marriage shall be gone through, and if this is omitted the marriage is invalid. A very sad case comes under my own cognizance recently. A young Frenchman, visiting in this country, became engaged to a young English lady. Inquiries were made, the gentleman's position and prospects appeared satisfactory; the affection was mutual, and the marriage was duly solicited in the parish church and before a register. The latter precaution was taken because it appears to have been thought by the bride's friends that only a civil marriage was recognised in France. But nobody had thoughts of inquiring whether the bridegroom, a man of independent means, 27 years of age, had troubled to ask any one's leave before he got married. The man took his

A young Frenchman, visiting in this country, became engaged to a young English lady. Inquiries were made, the gentleman's position and prospects appeared satisfactory, the affection was mutual, and the marriage was duly solemnized in the parish church and before a register. The latter precaution was taken because it appears to have been thought by the bride's friends that only a civil marriage was recognised in France. But nobody had thoughts of inquiring whether the bride-groom, a man of independent means, 27 years of age, had troubled to ask any one's leave before he got married. The man took his wife over to France, and a couple of years afterward coolly informed her that they were not married at all. Apparently there was no redress for the unmarried wife, who had to return to her relatives with this indelible stigma upon her.—English Paper.
New Paducah Was Named.
The city of Paducah, Ky., has, I notice, been coming to the front recently, and considerable has been printed in the newspapers concerning the place. In a recently published article an attempt was made to give a history of the city, and the writer, lacking information as to the origin of the name, fell back on that most convenient makeshift, "an old Indian chief." Now, there may have been an Indian chief with a name similar to Paducah, but old time river men have an altogether different idea of the origin of the name. It is this:
When steamboats first began navigating the Ohio river they depended on wood for fuel, and wood yards were located at convenient potato. One of these wood yards was located at the mouth of the Tennessee river by an Irishman named Patrick Dugan. Of course he was commonly called Pat Dugan. Pat Dugan's wood yard and the few shanties occupied by himself and his woodchoppers eventually grew to a thriving city, and what more natural than that the original name should be retained, and Paducah is a very natural corruption of the ancient and honorable name, Patrick Dugan.—Steamboat Mate in St. Louis Globe-Democrat.
A Love Affair of Schubert.
The Countess Caroline, an enthusiastic girl of great beauty, became the object of Schubert's romantic passion. His exterior was anything but that of an ideal lover. Rude, unhagely features, thick nose, coarse, protruding mouth, and a shambling, awkward figure, were redeemed only by eyes of uncommon splendor and depth. The inexperienced maid, belonging to a haughty family, hardly understood the devotion of the humbly born genius. Only once he was on the verge of a full revelation. She asked him why he had dedicated nothing to her. With abrupt, passionate intensity of tone, Schubert answered: "What's the use of that! Everything belongs to you." This break of confession seems to have frightened him from any further intercourse with the family, yet he never forgot his beautiful dream, or loved another woman.—Cassell's Magazine.
Unnecessary Exposure.
My attention was drawn recently while attending a very large funeral, one of the largest men in Buffalo since that of President Fillmore, to the fact that many of the friends subjected themselves to an attack of pneumonia by standing at the grave with their hands uncovered. It would be a good thing and would show no disrespect to the dead if the officiating clergyman would request all to keep their hats on during the service at

My attention was drawn recently while attending a very large funeral, one of the largest men in Buffalo since that of President Fillmore, to the fact that many of the friends subjected themselves to an attack of pneumonia by standing at the grave with their hands uncovered. It would be a good thing and would show no disrespect to the dead if the officiating clergyman would request all to keep their hats on during the service at the grave. No good can come of removing the hat in a cold, penetrating wind, and harm is doubtless often the result. Who will be the first bold enough to start this reform?

Music Everywhere.
Music boxes are now displayed in Chestnut street windows that are set in decanters, inkstands, work baskets and ever so many more clever decorations, so that a lady visitor may suddenly hear "Twickenham Ferry" ringing apparently from Mrs. Dorcas' thimble, or a nodable caller be astounded to hear "Comin' Through the Rye" emerging from the bottle that is pinned. The decanters hold liquor and begin to play when the stopple is removed. Philadelphia Times.
His Favorite Exercise.
(Time 11:15 p.m.)—She — Mr. Tirwum, what is your favorite exercise?
He (enthusiastically)—Walking.
She — I am glad to know it. I was afraid you had forgotten how.—Burlington Free Press.
According to The Union (Oregon) Scout a big home nearly as large as a man's body was found in the Wallowa brick yard. A rib seven feet long was also found. The bones are probably parts of the skeleton of some huge extinct animal.
