LATE NEWS OF THE WEEK. Governor Waterman Visits Anaheim. Reception Tendered Him by the Citizens The Bellingment County Tax Taddle Baseball News - Brown-grounds' Good Shooting - Birthday Surprise - The Supervinters Governor Waterman and wife and Mrs. of San Bernardino, daughter of the Governor accompanied by Hervey Lindley, Samuel L. S. Butler and Majors A. W. Harbert and M. T. Owens arrived here on Thursday evening last, and were tendered a reward by our citizens. The distinguished man arrived by the Southern Pacific and directed to the Planters' Hotel, where the Governor was met by many of our townsmen. After dining he held a levee in the room of the hotel and until 9 o'clock had at a constant line of visitors, many of whom had met him before. Some of them known him for many years, their memoirs being back to the time when the Gov't little thought he would one day be upon to fill the chair of the Chief Executive of the commonwealth. Among the men at the Governor's levee was a representative of this journal. When the astonishing newspaper man had well-nigh gone into an attacking hands with a real live Government, the old man came to the rescue with: "I'm you're the Gazette man, are you? I hope the Gazette, but you must send it regularly." The reporter gaped for breath, and vowed that near and far, there was no such a man as Governor. Governor spoke of the State institution at some length, and said that at San Antonio the third shift in the jute factory currently been put to work, and the fact now in operation twenty-four hours a day he said the State is now manufacturer of great quantity of sacks. He hoped to enough to supply the farmers during mining harvest. Everything at San Antonio is running with smoothness and greatest benefit to the State. Governor also referred to the Folsom which, when completed, will furnish the greatest water powers in the country. The dam is worth $1,000,000 to the county. Mr. Johnson is largely interested in real estate in this neighborhood, and his business attack pines months of home are a feature of this part of the country. He is expected hardly shortly and will henceforth give his attention more largely to his property interests in this section. The National Game. The Orange and Artesia baseball clubs crossed bets at the home grounds on Saturday afternoon, and after playing six innings decided to call the game a draw. The Orange boys played without their regular pitcher and pressed Thacker and Camry of the home club into survive to fill the places of two of their players who failed to arrive. The Artesia ball teams are battles from away back and smashed the leather with a dark-brown venomage. They would undoubtedly have won the game if they hadn't gone to pieces in the first innning. At the end of the sixth innning the boys agreed to stop playing as it was necessary for them to depart for their women. Another game will probably be arranged between the mines again in the near future. The score: ORANGE R.O. ARTESIA R.O. P. The game between the home club and the Westminsters, which was to have been played on Sunday, was postponed on account of the rain. Matt Everhardy is not an astonishing success as an umpire. So the cranks say. Next Saturday, Washington's Birthday, the home club will probably play a game with the Artesias, and on the following day the Santa Ana club is expected over. The canceling of last Sunday's game with the Westminsters has somewhat interfered with the regular schedule of games. An effort will be made to arrange a game between the home nine and the Oaklanda champions of the Stata league, who will arrive in Los Angeles in a day or two. The Oaklanda will pass three weeks in Southern California, and are desirous of meeting representative clubs before departing for the north to begin the league race. Their visit could be all of his interest he is calling of his "similarity." Mr. Johnson is largely interested in real estate in this neighborhood, and his business attack pines months of home are a feature of this part of the country. He is expected hardly shortly and will henceforth will have attended his father in Mr. Minde. My attendance has been called to the Artemis Daygift committee on all properties in the Anahuita District. My copy of Tuna has been destroyed, and I have sent a message with the water company my name when I made the request of my company Will you therefore be kind to know the amount of my money or ask the proper officer to send a memorandum of the amount, and a check for the name by return me. PERSONAL MELANY Miss Del Valle of Ventura was of the Miami Rippeans last week. Dr. Wormer of Los Angeles was on a business trip last Thursday. Dr.E.M.Plammer, a well-known gift of Los Angeles, and W.E.W. the First National Bank, came Tuesday evening on a visit to Mr. An effort will be made to arrange a game between the home nine and the Oaklanda champions of the State league, who will arrive in Los Angeles in a day or two. The Oaklands will pass three weeks in Southern California, and are desirous of meeting representative clubs before departing for the north to begin the league race. Their visit to the southern country is for the purpose of practicing, and it is believed they can be induced to pay us a visit. The Oaklands are the strongest nine in the State, and on the recent visit to this Coast of the Eastern ball clubs, the Oaklands gave them the hardest contests the Easterners saw since the close of the League season. A committee of the home club will proceed to Los Angeles on Saturday to interview Colonel Robinson, the Oakland's manager, to see whether they can be induced to come here. Beside the game in which they will take part, an excellent time will be promised them if they come. Perhaps a sociable hop will be included in the festivities. George Horr's Birthday surprise. One of the most enjoyable surprises of the season was that tendered to George V. Horr, the handsome cashier of the Bank of Anaheim, on the occasion of his thirty-first birthday, at his residence on Lemon street on Tuesday evening. The party was skillfully arranged by Mrs. Horr, and was a genuine surprise to her husband. When the latter was about strolling down town after supper there came a knock at the door and two of his Los Angeles friends, Dr. Plummer and Mr. Wright, were ushered into the parlor, where they tendered their congratulations to the agreeably surprised host. Later in the evening there came other knocks at the front door, and one by one George's friends appeared, until he at last began to suspicion that something was wrong. Such was not the case, however. There was nothing wrong in Mrs. Horr inviting a lot of George's bachelor friends to visit him on his birthday. At least the bachelors thought so when George pelled down his private cigar box and passed around fragrant Havana. These were lit, and after an hour spent in social converse, card playing was indulged in until midnight, when Mrs. Horr invited all into the supper room, where a dainty repeat had been prepared. Each guest was presented with a some souvenir card, in caricature, the being appropriate in all cases and provocative of much merry badge. "This is no time for airy perilage," quoth "Ward McBallister." Impatient at the railway levelled at his head, as with his usual well-appointed appetite, he made an onslaught on the raw oysters that was beautiful to behold. It was getting along into the we ama' hours when the party of happy bachelors arose from the table, all enthusiastic in praise of Mrs. Horr's generalship in arranging such a delightful affair and carrying it out so capitally. The health of host and hostess was pledged again, and when the "bacha" wended their way to their desolate homes, more than one was heard to express himself that George had a treasure in his better half, and that they awaited but a favorable opportunity of going and doing thermals even Matt Everhardy is not an astonishing success as an umpire. not paying their taxes for this fiscal year, are at present exercised over the fact that the delinquent list was not published until the 5th instant, when the law explicitly says that such list must be published on the first Monday in February. The paper having the contract for the county's printing published the list in full on Tuesday, placing upon its headlines the words "Second Edition," but the time being twenty-four hours late, it is claimed to be illegal, and many authorities ever that no action can be taken legally by the Sheriff in regard to the sale of the property enumerated in the list. Section 3764 of the Political Code is cited, and the ground taken that it will not be proper that this county shall have any less number of days intervening between the day of publication and the day of legal sale, or any less number of days for the delinquent to pay up the taxes and costs than other counties throughout the State. Whether the Sheriff under the circumstances will have the right to sell the delinquent property, amounting to something like $15,000, is one of the many parties propounded for the legal lights to answer. Should the Sheriff call such property, will the titles so conveyed be of any legal value, is also set up as another legal act to crack, and the question as to who are the parties responsible to the county will also be an interesting point in law when this little tangle comes to an issue." A Big Trade. The following item is taken from the Waco Tex.) News of February 11th: "Sanford Johnson closed a big trade yesterday. He sold Proctor Springs and the Johnson homestead to a syndicate for $67,800. Mr. Johnson has virtually closed a trade for the last bit of Waco property he owns. It is 35 acres on Park avenue, near the new Female College. The figures have not been settled yet, but it is understood that $15,000 is the price. Mr. Johnson has made the largest single sales ever made in Waco. The sale of the springs and his homestead is the largest since he sold the Driving Park. Mr. Johnson is now making his home in California, and wishing to con- Taxes In The Irrigation District. Editor Gaxertle.—In your last week's edition you publish an article headed "Dejunque Taxes in the Irrigation District," and signed "K. C.," in which the writer complains (1st) of not having sufficient notice; (2d) that he wrote to a friend in Anaheim asking, "Up to what date the tax could be paid before becoming delinquent," and that instead of answering his father the friend handed it to Collector Cadman, who wrote "Your tax amounts to $69 63 and on receipt of same will forward receipt." Without any comment, but allowing the public to judge whether or not K. Thanks Returned. Timothy Carroll, who last week took a carload of trees to South Riverside and disposed of them in short order, desires us to say that he is deeply grateful to the citizens of our neighboring town, whose kind treatment and condemnation will ever remain a green spot in his memory. A certain San Bernardino bug inspector undertook to place a boycott on trees grown at Anaheim, whether infested with scale or not. Tim went to South Riverside with his trees and succeeded in showing the bug inspectors that no trace of scale could be found upon them, as is testified to by the fact that he holds a certificate from the Orange Horticultural Commissioners stating that his trees are totally free from injurious parts of any sort. The South Riverside people demanded fair play, and frowned down the attempt to extend the San Bernardino nurseryman a monopoly of the business. After a thorough inspection Tim's trees were passed, and the ill-advised bug commissioner denounced. So Tim returns thanks to the good people as South Riverside. Good Meeting. F. D. Brown tried his hand at rifting one day last week while riding Garden Grove with Judge Elon on daena. Epping a hedger a couple dred yards away sportively playing grass. Brown aligned from the car take a shot as it, when the animal is held, into which it dashed as life depended upon getting under a jiffy. Thinking it would take on look at our friend Brown, the hedger its name above the mound that dominates when a ballet from Bewick performed its hand, and it fell, "as Jupiter." It was a line shot of Mildham. A shibim-hawk and an off fall a俯 to Beacon's pin both about about a hundred yards range. Elon aware that Bewick's markmen sounded him to "the chanty medal." The City Must Market keeps most that the market affords. Laws ordinance with them. Avvy & Everhardy's Home-made hoot in the market. Ask your browns for it. PERSONAL MELANGE. On Del Valle of Ventura was the great Minne Rimpans last week. Worms of Los Angeles was in town previous trip last Thursday. William Well came up from San Diego Sunday and returned yesterday evening.
