Why is Italian wine inferior to French? and why do Italian vines, from the same vineyard, vary so much in quality from year to year? An Italian wine grower lately came to England fresh from one of the worst vintages Italy has experienced for many a year and gives us the answer, says Murray's Magazine. It is in consequence of the harsh-harrier manner in which the easy-going Italian dries his work. Instead of planting his vineyard with one or two kinds of vines, as the French man would do, in proportions that must vary, he allows say a dozen different kinds to grow together in one vineyard. Some may bear early and some late grapes, some may have one flavor and some another, but no matter they must all find their way to the various vats and at the same time, and according to the varying seasons so is the wine. One year there is a preponderance of ripe or early grapes, than the wine is swept. Another year there are more unripe grapes or late grapes than usual, consequently the wine is sour. Or, the grapes of one flavor are more abundant than those of another so is the flavor of the wine influenced. Then again, the French vineins instead of being allowed to grow with their native freedom, are in Italy, are more regularly pruned and tended, so that the grapes may remain the amount of sun and no rainfall than it has suited to them. These things all tend to make a standard wine, which, in flavor and sweetness, varies as little as possible from one vintage to another. Moreover lemons wine growers in Italy are short ventilated and most connections in the town district, and returning applied her knowledge to her own vineyard with very considerable means. Not until the Italians more generally follow the example of the French, and our indifference, and take more care of their vines they will never be able to compete with French wine.
