LATE NEWS OF THE WEEK Yorba's Objections Not Well Taken. The Bay Judge Brunson—Probability of the Objections Being Overruled by the Superior Court Te-Meerrow Correspondence from Placentia—The Orange Crop—Minute Installation Board of Supervisors. The Board of Directors of the Anaheim Irrigation District met in regular adjourned session on Friday afternoon last. Present, Messrs. Hunter, Zeyn and Wrede. Attorney Ling of Los Angeles represented Mr. Shinn as attorney of the board, the latter being engaged in the city on an important suit. The following letter was received from A. Brunson, to whom had been referred the objections of the Yorba to the hearing of the petition of the district to issue bonds: LOS ANGELES, Jan. 16, 1890. Directors Anaheim Irrigation District—Dear Sirs: We have, in connection with your attorney, Mr. Shinn, examined the points of objection made to the hearing of your petition by the Superior Court of Orange county, set for January 24th, and are of the opinion that the objections are not well taken, and think that on presentation they will be overruled. Your truly, BRUNSON, WILSON & Co. The committee appointed to settle with Piez James and S. O. Wood reported having agreed to the payment of $50 to the former gentleman, and $20 to the latter, in full of all demands. The same was adopted, the committee discharged, and warrants ordered drawn for the same. Various other matters were passed upon by the board, among which was the adoption of a new form of bond and the payment of $150 to Attorney Shinn on account. The latter sent a request that $300 be forwarded him, but the board split the difference and sent him $150. The new form of bond was adopted by a unanimous vote and the same was ordered spread upon the minutes. The board adjourned until Tuesday, February 17. The hearing of the objections referred to comes up before Judge Towner at Santa Ana tomorrow. The irrigation district will be represented by Judge Brunson, who has been engaged to act in conjunction with the attorney of the district. As the Judge is of opinion that the objections are not well taken and is a jurist probably without a peer in the county in such matters, it is the universal belief among our citizens that the objection of the objections referred to comes up before Judge Towner at Santa Ana tomorrow. The hearing to-morrow is the third postponement, and there are good reasons to believe the case will not be postponed again. The Orange Crop. Statistics gathered from the southern counties of this State show a remarkable and satisfactory increase in the acreage and yield of the orange crop over that of preceding years. The number of acres of orange trees now bearing is estimated at 26,000, with a total yield of 900,000 boxes, divided as follows: Los Angeles county, 11,000 acres; yield 425,000 boxes, value $956,250; San Bernardino county, 11,400 acres, yield 310,000 boxes, value $750,000; Orange county, 110,000 boxes, value $80,000; San Diego county, 1,000 acres, value $125,000. The total value of the crop is about $2,000,000 in local numbers. This does not include a vast number of bearing trees on half and quarter-acre city residence lots in the different counties, which it is estimated will go far beyond supplying the home consumption, leaving the crop as above stated for shipment. The 900,000 boxes will aggregate nearly 3,500 carloads. The quality of the fruit was never better. The scale, which affected the crop last season, is almost entirely eliminated, owing to the industry of the Australian parasite, or lady bug. Masonic Installation. At the special meeting called by the order of W. M. for the installation of the officers elect of Anaheim Lodge, No. 207, F. A. M., a most enjoyable time was bad. Notwithstanding the inclementity of the weather, the brachren attended in full force, and in addition thereto were supplemented by delegations from Los Angeles, Orange and Fullerton. Past Master Samuel Prager acting as Grand Master, assisted by Past Master Orri Bullis, as Grand Marshal, installed the following officers: P. Davis, W. M. W. M. McFadden, I. W.; W. M. Higgins Treasurer; J. S. Gardiner, Secretary; E. A. Korn, Marshal; H. W. Chynowath, S. D. R. D. Cartis, J. D.; T. W. Hudson and T. Grimshaw, Steward; E. A. Pullen, Tyler. Buster F. R. Krebs, who had been elected Mr. Warden, having left for San Francisco, the station will have to be filled by a displacement from the Grand Lodge calling for election for that position. After installation the members repaired to the ante-room, wrote a lucrative table had been prepared and the feast of reason and flow of soul naturally occurred, as is usual. Visiting brothers present were as follows: Samuel Prager, P. M.; Ormi Bullia, P. M.; Mr. Last, Maud H. W. Lewis of Los Angeles, Messrs. Wicks and Fullerton of Orange and Mr. Pebergast of Fullerton. W. H. Henderson While this is being done the impassioned commissioners are putting in a demand for their $8 a day, or $16 a day. We pay one-half of it and they do next to nothing. That is only in keeping with the extravagant manner in which business is being transacted in the Imperial county. Had our Supervisors agreed to pay their own commissioners and let Los Angeles paid bens we would have been the gainer by several hundred if not thousands of dollars. Three frosts, and then another rain. The thermometer hovered dangerously near the freezing point for oranges for two nights. An orange will freeze on the trees at 26 degrees above zero. The thermometer recorded 28 degrees two mornings. Fortunately no damage was done. The snow on the Santiago mountains on the southeast of us and on the Sierra Nevada on our north reminds us somewhat of the winters of our boyhood's home. Although the nearest point to snow is perhaps twenty-five miles, it is quite close enough to please us. What a beautiful contrast with our luxuriantly verdant fields and our beautiful dark green orange foliage, studded with the golden fruit. Then raise the eyes a little and gaze towards the mountains and see the great banks of snow come down so low that the green and white apparently all appear. The 900,000 boxes will aggregate nearly 3,500 carloads. The quality of the fruit was never better. The scale, which affected the crop last season, is almost entirely eliminated, owing to the industry of the Australian parasite, or lady bug. Florida Orange Crop Again. EDITOR GAZETTE —Dear Sir!—We are in receipt of copy of your paper, and note your editorial on the letter which we sent you, regarding of the Florida orange crop. In order to prove that our stand in the matter is correct, as soon as the statistics for the season are published we will have the same sent to you, showing you what the crop has been for the past two years, and for the present year. We are well posted on the Florida orange crop, as we have been there since last October, covering every part of the State thoroughly. We are satisfied the figures we have given you will be below the crop, rather than above it; and if so, it will be the largest one we have ever had in Florida. We however do not think that will make the price on California oranges lower, and believe they will bring a fair, and what we call "paying" price. But if buyers ask $1.50 for fruit on trees," as it is claimed they have done, they will certainly lose money on the purchase. For you must remember we have the foreign orange crop to compete with, which can be laid down at any time in Chicago for $2.25 to $2.50, and if California oranges go above a certain price, the trade will step in and buy Mesinas. We are doing everything we can to keep Mesinas oranges out of the Western marketa, and do not think the proper way to do so is to run the price up on Californias. Florida orange growers can raise oranges and make a big profit on them if they can get $1 per box on them. Among these present were Banner and family, Mr. Arthur of the bridegroom, Mr. and Mrs.Homer, Mr. and Mrs.Nebelwig, Mrs.R.D.Cartin, Mrs.J.Winnett Adama, Mrs.L.S.Buchanan Misses Eda and Mary Boone Adama,S.B.FedermanWill DaviaGeorge DunnMr.AnSchindler. Lady maskers will be conveyed to the hall in carriages and admitted free. Spread prizes will be offered the best-antique lady and gentleman character. The supper will be one of the finest ever spread at a ball here, and the members of the military band promise that the music will colipse anything in that line ever heard here. Indications now are that the hall will be crowded with a representative assemblage of our citizens, both old and young, and that the people from the surrounding country will be present in large number. Malame Corona de Weiba, the Los Angeles mayor, has sent Pellegrin & Son a list of beer two hundred containers, which may be ordered at any time before the ball. Parties desiring to rent suits had better attend to it at once, as the demand for them is great. Col. Everharty's line of care will be run on the night of the ball, to and from the hall. Lilies will order carriages at Miss Moseman's millinery store. Quick Time: We must put down a large credit mark to Palmer & Rey, the San Francisco type dealers. Last Saturday afternoon at 5 o'clock a telegram was sent for some types required in issuing the delinquent tax list of the irrigation district, on which our officers have been at work during the past week. We expected, judging from the past service of the firm's Los Angeles agency, to receive material about to-day or to-morrow—and Amcknowledgement: The sisters of St. Catherine's Academy desire publicly to express their thanks to Capt. S. O. Wood for his kindness and liberality in surveying and laying out their driveway and garden for them. Also to Mrs. Langenberger, Mr. Carroll and others for valued assistance, gifts of shrubs, flowers, etc. With this kindly co-operation on the part of our citizen, the sisters promise us a garden and grounds which will be in a short time a credit and a source of delight to all good people of Anaheim. Would that all our property owners were inspired with a like desire to improve and to make their surroundings beautiful. Disgraced Move: A most disgrave fight among attorneys took place in Superior Judge Towner's court at Santa Ana on Monday, at the decision in Reid vs. Betta, in which Mr. Reid of San Francisco had taken steps to recover the pet session of her two children, aged 10 and 13 years, from the custody of their grandfather, Mr. Betta, who lives a short distance from Santa Ana. The row began, at which there came near being fatal results, over the Court's decision, which was that the children be allowed to use their own plumbers, and go with their mother or grandfather, as they preferred. At the conclusion of the case the court adjourned for lunch, immediately the mother and children, accompanied by the mother's attorney, Judge Young of San Francisco and C. B. McMahay of Santa Ana, started for the stairway leading to the street. Just as the mother had started down the price on California oranges lower, and believe they will bring a fair, and what we call "paying" price. But if buyers ask $1.50 for fruit on trees, as it is claimed they have done, they will certainly lose money on the purchase. For you must remember, we have the foreign orange crop to compete with, which can be laid down at any time in Chicago for $2.25 to $2.50, and if California oranges go above a certain price, the trade will step in and buy Mesinaa. Florida orange growers can raise oranges and make a big profit on them if they can get $1 per box on the trees, and there is no reason why California growers cannot raise the fruit just as low prices as the Florida growers.
