CANADA'S GREAT RESERVE
THE RESOURCES AND CAPACITIES OF THE GREAT MACKENZIE BASIN.
The Area—River Navigation—Agricultural Possibilities—The Climate—Mineral Deposits—Forest Growth—Great Far Preserve—Extensive Petroleum Field.
An inquiry has been instituted by the Canadian government into the resources and capacities of the laminas area included in what may be regarded as the Great Mackenzie Basin, the region extending from the Saskatchewan to the Arctic shore and from Hudson's bay to the Rocky mountains.
The extent of the scope of the inquiry covers 1,200,000 square statute miles, which area includes some of the islands of the Arctic Archipelago. Its coast line on the Arctic coast and Hudson's bay measures about 5,000 miles, which estimate does not include the coast lines of lakes or deeply indented bays. Over one-half of this coast line, the report amuses us, is mainly accessible to whaling and sealing craft. The navigable coast lines of the larger lakes of the region in question amount to about 4,000 miles, while its total lacustrine area probably exceeds that of the Eastern Canadian American chain of great lakes. There is a river navigation of about 3,750 miles, of which 1,250 miles is suitable for storm wheel steamers, which, with their barges, may carry 800 tons; the remaining 1,250 miles being deep enough for light draughts as going steamers. There is a total of about 6,500 miles of continuous lake coast and river navigation, broken only in two places.
Within the scope of the committee's inquiry there is a possible area, it is stated, of 650,000 square miles fitted for the growth of potatoes, 407,000 square miles suitable for barley, and 310,000 square miles suitable for wheat. There is a pastoral area of 860,000 square miles, 29,000 miles of which is open prairie with occasional groves, the remainder being more or less wooded; 274,000 square acres, including the prairie, may be considered as arable land. About 400,000 square miles of the total is useless for the pasturage of domestic animals or for cultivation. This area comprises the barren grounds and a portion of the lightly wooded region to their south and west.
Throughout this arable and pastoral area latitude bears no direct relation to summer bothers—the spring flowers and the buds of deciduous trees appearing as early north of Great Slave lake as at Winnipeg, St. Paul and Minnesota, Kingston or Ottawa, and earlier along the Peace, Lizard and some minor western affluents of the Great Mackenzie river, where the climate resembles that of western Ontario. The native grasses and vetches are equal and in some districts superior to those of eastern Canada. The prevailing southwest summer winds of the country in question bring the warmth and moisture whilst render possible the far northern birth growth, and sensibly affect the or common items. It is in diversity of women where there is one woman eye, but it provides an good for a weak hand as it gradually immedited. It is one of the few distinctions in which the male human animal obtains a domain in which the female usually reigns supreme, that of pursuing a custom based on norms and harmful to health in consequence of an accepted policy of initiation. It is medically of value as illustrating the traumas that men have no more digested wisdom than women generally speaking, but outside of this purpose the monocle falls into the same general class as the man quite, the King Charles spaniel, and improved food for infants, all articles which humanity could get along much better without—London Corr. BEED.
A wonderful thing is a mind—
The one thing dominates forever!
The one thing changes as utterly true—
Forever old, and forever new,
And fiddle and faithfulness move.
Plant blossoms, and blossoms will bloom;
Plant hate, and hate will grow;
You can now today—however shall bring
The blossom that proves when art of a thing
Is the seed, the seed that you now.
NEW YORK SOCIETY.
FOREIGN VISITOR CRITICISES THE CITY'B FASHIONABLE MEN.
III Manners. III Breeding of New York's Young Snobs. "How My Dear Barron" Was snubbed by a Club Man—a transformation.
Some time since we met an officer in Berlin who was starting on a tour of the world. He was a captain in the German army—a very high rank for a man of only 25 years; had served in a minor diplomatic capacity at St Petersburg and London, and was off on a six month's leave. He had letters of introduction to a number of prominent people in New York. The other day he sat-in a smoking room of Lieberkrans club and talked of New York society. He is a man of perfect manners, handsome person and great intelligence.
"I have been in America ever since I left Berlin," he said, "and I hope to remain here permanently. I am in love with the place and with the women, but not with the men."
"Have you met many New Yorkers?"
"Yes, a great many of them at Newport, Bar Harbor and here. With the exception of a few travelled men I am astounded at the manner which prevail. In talking to you I assume of course that you will not mention my name and as the opinion of foreign observers is always of more or less interest to Americans. I believe, I shall talk without restriction about one of the most remarkable features of your daily life. That is, the extraordinary ill manners and ill breeding of New York's young men. Throughout this arable and pastoral area latitude bears no direct relation to summer beaches, the spring flowers and the buds of deciduous trees appearing as early north of Great Slave lake as at Winnipeg, St. Paul and Minneapolis, Kingston or Ottawa, and earlier along the Peace, Liard, and minor western affluents of the Great Mackenzie river, where the climate resembles that of western Ontario. The native grasses and vines are equal and in some districts superior to those of eastern Canada. The prevailing southwest summer winds of the country in question bring the warmth and moisture when tender possible the far northern growth, and sensibly affect the climate of the region under consideration as far north as the Arctic circle and as far east as the eastern rim of the Mackenzie basin.
The forest area has upon it a growth of trees well suited for all purposes of house and ship building, for mining, railway and bridging purposes, far in excess of its own needs, and of great prospective value to the treasured regions of Canada and the United States to the south, the growth on the Laurentian formation being scant; but the alluvial portion has upon it (on the river of its name and elsewhere) the "Liard," a balsam poplar, sometimes called Balm of Gilead or rough bark poplar, 120 feet high, with a stump diameter of 5 feet to 6 feet, the white spruce, 150 feet high, with a stump diameter of 4 feet to 5 feet; the larch of about the same size, and the banksian pine, whose straight stem is often 100 feet long, with only one diameter at the stump.
Of the mines of this vast region little is known. Gold has been found on the west shore of Hudson's bay, and has been said to exist in certain portions of the barren grounds. Silver, on the Upper Liard and Peace rivers, copper, upon the Coppermine river, iron, graphite, other, brick and pottery clay, mica, gypsum, limestone, sand for glass and molding, and asphaltum are all known to exist, while the petroleum area is so extensive as to justify the belief that eventually it will supply the larger part of this continent and be shipped from Churchill or some more northern Hudson's bay port to England.
Salt and sulphur deposits are less extensive, but the former is found in crystals equal in parity to the best rock salt, and in highly saline springs, while the latter is found in the form of pyrites; and the fact that these petroleum and salt deposits occur mainly near the line of division between deep water navigation and that fitted for lighter craft, gives them a possible great commercial value. The extensive coal and lignite deposits of this valley Mackenzie and elsewhere will be used to be a great value when the questions of reducing its iron ore and the transportation of the products of this vast region have to be solved by steamboats going or lighter river craft.
The chief present commercial product of the country is its fur, which, as the region in question is its last great fur preserve of the world, are of very great present and prospective value, all the finer furs of commerce being there found, and the sales in London yearly amounting to several millions of dollars.
The evidence submitted to the committee points to the existence in the Athalassa and Mackenzie valleys of the most extensive petroleum field in America, if not in the world. The most petroleum, and consequently the demand for it by ill nations, are increasing at such a rapid ratio that it is probable this great petroleum field will assume an enormous value in the near future — London Times.

"Have you met many New Yorkers?"
Yes, a great many of them at Newport, Bar Harbor and here. With the exception of a few travelled men I am astounded at the manner which prevail. In talking to you I assume of course, that you will not mention my name and as the opinion of foreign observers is always of more or less interest to Americans. I believe, I shall talk without restriction about one of the most remarkable features of your daily life. That is, the extraordinary ill manner and ill breeding of New York's young men. There is a degree of snoobliness about them which I have never known to exist elsewhere on the civilized planet. You understand, of course that I am speaking only of society men. The professional and business men of the town are available and good matured to the last degree, but the sprigs who claim to be social men are almost uninferior. My title of barron you know is of small consequence on the other side, and I have not used it at all here. Probably I would receive more consideration but I done so, but I was in love with the hospitality and good nature of the older New Yorkers, and wished to go off if I went at all on my merita. On that account, as I may, I have been known simply as plain Mr.
A SILLY LOT OF SPRINGS.
"Do you mean to say that society men have been distinctly ruder?"
They are the silvestre lot of sprigs," said their German captain with an indulgent smile. "That I have ever known. I have heard much talk about the difficulty which American women were taken up by royalty in England while American men were snubbed. I did not then know the reason for all this, but realize now exactly what inspires the sentiments of antipathy. There is an apiphone about New York young society men that is intolerable. They will kick the feet of a social superior while they snub a stranger with the most bridal indifference. Let me give you an illustration:
"Last week I was at luncheon at Delmonico's when I met a distinguished member of our government's representative corps here at luncheon. He said he was going to leave on the 3:40 train for Washington, and urged me to go with him. He promised to bring me back safely two or three days later, and spoke so eloquently of the magnificence of the railway service, the beauties of the capital, etc., that I rushed over to my hotel, threw some things into my trunk, joined him, and went to the capital city. We arrived there before 10 o'clock. It looked more like Paris by night than any other city I have ever seen. This was doubtless result of the many lights, the smooth tar pavements, and the width of the avenues. I met New Yorker whom I knew that night at supper at a prominent Washington club, and asked him to time him next day.
"When I arrived at 1 o'clock the hair dozen guests had already assembled. There was only one New Yorker among them—a man with a washed out face, bald head and his elbow akimbo in a general effort toward a fashionable carriage. The host went up to him after I entered and said:
"I want to introduce you to Mr. Dash, of Berlin."
"Who'd drawnthe New York man."
The host repeated his remark, and then New Yorker said in a tone quite audible:
"Never heard of him."
NOT PARTICULARLY ENTERTAINING.
"We were introduced to each other, sat by side, and talked for several hours. He endeavored to exploit his intimacy with many prominent society people, and was not particularly entertaining. However we parted politely, and the following day I was going along Commercial avenue, when he brushed past with a lady on his arm. I bowed to him, as a matter of course."
The evidence submitted to the committee points to the existence in the Athabasca and Mackenzie valleys of the most extensive petroleum field in America, if not in the world. The use of petroleum, and consequently the demand for it by all nations, are increasing at such a rapid ratio that it is probable this great petroleum field will assume an enormous value in the near future.

An interesting spectacle can be witnessed on Broadway above Twenty-fifth street every pleasant evening. In the window of a kid glove store a man wearing a soiled blouse entertains quite a crowd by the skilful manner in which he dresses kid skins for the glove makers. His knife might be called a three inch broad chisel, of razor like knonness, which he pushes delicately but swiftly over the unseen surface of the rough leather, smoothing it down most beautifully. Every instant he is obliged to whist the blade with what appears to be an ordinary piece of cloth steel. Occasionally the artisan cuts away no attention to the slip, and is dressed it is wrapped in cloth.
