Phases and Points of Contact
Interesting Observations Upon the Remarkable Phenomenon A Solar Eclipse the Most Marvelous of All Splendors Its Importance.
CAMP COLOMA,
LA. ANGELS GEODETIC BASE LINE.
Of the 118.0 Coast and Geodetic Survey.
Lay 23.51 north, long 118.00 east.
BOEBA BAY, December 15, 1888.
The beginning of the eclipse in Pacific Standard time occurs at 09:30m. 20h. P.M., January 1, 1889. The point of first contact is 40 from the north point of the sun's limb counted round by the east; or 263° 13' on the vertex of the sun's limb counted round by the east. The time of the greatest occuration is 1h. 50m. P.M., when 10:05 digits will be obscured. The ending of the eclipse occurs at 3h. 17m. 16s; and the point of the latest contact is 75° 46' from the north point of the sun counted round by the east; or 51° 38' from the vertex of the sun counted round by the east. For the astronomical station of the Coast Survey named Boena Vista (1870) in Los Angeles now occupied by the High School, the phases will occur almost exactly one minute earlier than the above times, and the points of contact will be but slightly different. For Anaheim and the adjacent towns the phases will occur about twenty seconds later than the above times; and the points of contact will be nearly the same.
The total solar eclipse of New Year's day is a phenomenon so rarely visible that extraordinary efforts are being made to observe it in California and Nevada. The all successes last year a total eclipse whose pathway was through Sierra, has no dishearted European observers that it is very doubtful whether any of them will venture to make the winter trip across the Atlantic and continent. But American observatories will be well represented, and many private and amateur observatories will do their share of work. Appels have been made by Professor Coloma.
the magnetic storms at the surface of the earth, it is quite probable that this extraordinary commotion is accompanied by a development of electric force abundantly sufficient to account for all the observed resemblances between the corona and the electrical phenomena of our earth's atmosphere.
The above condensed expression of the modern view of the constitution of the solar body and atmosphere is the basis from which recent observations start, and it can readily be understood how intensely interested observers become to be able to decide some of the many debatable questions that attach to it.
Observations must be systematically subdivided among men who will each confine himself to the description of one feature only. Is the character of the corona structureless? Are there any equatorial extensions or extremely long rays? Are there any dark rifts through the corona from the sun border? Do the long rays pulsate or exhibit a wave motion as the tail of the comet of August, 1853, did?
To answer these and a hundred other suggestions, the makes eye and pencil, the photograph, the telescope, spectroscope and polariscope will be employed, and it is to be hoped that a clear day and so many enthusiastic and good observers may give the scientific world satisfactory results.
THE FIFTH ATTEMPT.
The Supervisors Again Discuss the Irrigation Question.
At the meeting of the Board of Supervisors on Monday the petition of Anaheim irrigators to be organized into a water district under the provisions of the Wright Act was taken up. An opinion from the District Attorney was read, bearing upon the question whether the Yorba would be "benefitably" by being included in the district. The District Attorney was of opinion that the lands at Yorba that are now irrigated and which have a superabundance of water by virtue of being at the head waters of our irrigation system, would not be "benefited" by the proposed district. Upon this showing the attorney for petitionors withrew the petition without prejudice to the introduction of another. In the meantime the opinion of the Attorney General will be asked, when it is probable another attempt will be made before the new Board of Supervisors.

The total solar eclipse of New Year's day is a phenomenon so rarely visible that extraordinary efforts are being made to observe it in California and Nevada. The ill success of last year's total eclipse, whose pathway was through California, has no disastrated European observers; that it is very doublet whether any of them will venture to make the winter trip across the Atlantic and the continent. But American observatories will be well represented, and many private and amateur observatories will do their share of work. Appeals have been made by Producers Holden of the Lock, Todd of Amherst and Davidson of the Coast and Geoscience Survey to continue all persons within the path of totality to make drawings and descriptions of the corona, which is just now the special object of study by physical astronomers. Beyond that the total eclipse is itself the耀 glory of the heavens. All other celestial phenomena pale before us awing inspiring majesty. It is the most majestic volumes of all planets and the most unpredicted in its suggestiveness. It opens a living field of thought and reflection to the layer of nature, the specialist, the artist, the writer, the orator and especially to the breeder and the preacher. It starts with old observers with an almost tangible recollection of beauties and powers that are rare at an immense distance.
It is worth a pilgrimage by every woman student that can possibly stay in a home to behold what no imagination has yet described, and that he artizes away.
"A new feature of the phenomenon of totality proves inversion that the dark body of the moon stands out clearly and simultaneously in bold relief in the space between the observer and the brightness of the corona on the brilliantness of the glorious sun flames around the observed body of the sun.
The two colored glasses which rise one hundred thousand miles above the sun's body, and the pale white corona that extends one or two millions of miles beyond the sun, are appealing a full of intense interest in the study of the sun's constitution. The former can at any time be curved, measured and analyzed by the spectroscope attached to the telescope at the latter can only be seen during the midseconds of the total phase of a solar eclipse.
The coronal light is to a certain extent self luminous as this is proven by the exhibition of a light line in the spectroscope; but it also shows by reflected light as indicated by optical polarization. Astronomers are therefore anxious to know whether this coronal envelope is a true solar atmosphere, or a more cloud of meteoric particles, or the other making itself visible under a new wave motion.
The constitution of the sun is of course, in doubt, due to account for the intense consumption of material which takes place at its surface. The theory has been suggested that it really a gasoon body which is enveloped by a dust either solid or liquid, through which burst out the great rose-colored flames of incandescent hydrogen gas.
Over this crist imes the atmosphere proper composed of gases and gases, each arrangement itself, or touching to arrange itself, as if it were the only one in existence. For example, the maximum atmosphere of the sun is approximately at such an elevation and density as it would normally be if it were only vapor in the sun's atmosphere under certain conditions of pressure and temperature. According to this view there is near the surface of the sun a layer, probably not more than five hundred miles in thickness, that contains all the gases in intimate and intricate mixture. This is not slightly different. For Anaheim and the adjacent towns will occur about twenty seconds later than the above times; and the points of contact will be nearly the same.

When Company G had failed into lions on Thursday evening of last week night. Lewis was summoned by a member of his family to repair home as spedily as possible, and thinking that some dire ill had fallen "the baby," he precipitously darted off at the armory and started for home. Arriving there, the good-looking Leuton mat avers, he "smelt a mouse." In a moment he entire company had followed him to his some and an elegant baby carriage was wheeled into the house. The happy father was quite agreeably surprised, and so was Mrs. Lewis, and so was her baby. The band faked—the guests with some choice situations of music. At the suggestion of the latter company were soon drinking its health bumbers order at at Planters Hotel. The carriage is an appropriate present to first child born to a number of Company G, and its parents are thoroughly deserving of its compliment.
The company afterward fell into line again and marched to the residence of Littot. Gale for the purpose of tendering a seahorse to Mr. Todd. Arriving there she bend again discarded martial music, and then she hast called for glasses and she fell and annihilated an enormous quantity of superior beer. Afterward she奔赴到the residence of Captain Wood, when Mrs Wood was tendered a serenade.

It is certainly a gasson body which is enveloped by a crown either solid or liquid, through which burst out the great rose colored flames of imminent hydrogen gas.
Over this crust lies the atmosphere proper composed of gases and gases, each arranging itself, of tending to arrange itself, as if it were on one coin in existence. For example, the maximum atmosphere of the sun is approximately at such an elevation and density as it would normally be if it were the only vapor in the sun's atmosphere under certain conditions of pressure and temperature. According to this view there is near the surface of the sun a layer, probably not more than five hundred miles in thickness, that contains all the gases in intimate and intricate mixture. This is the birthplace of the Fraunhaler or dark lines of the solar spectrum. Accepting still higher above the surface of the sun we reach in those apples to which the different gases now limit being of course, lower for values of greater density. The hydrogen and an unknown element reach a much higher level than the others on account of their highness while far above and beyond these ones the perennial matter. The region of the hydrogen gas, named the chromosphere, is the region of the corona—the umbra.
These layers of gases of different densities are never so tight as quickly. Some we know from observation that opossums vertical and horizontal movements act like this solar atmosphere just as shows activate our eyes.
These terrible movements which reach velocities of fast and three hundred miles per second of time are excavated by forces which act from beneath, and which also give to the upper surface of the chromosphere a form as irregular and fantastic as a shoot of flame; moreover they elevate its general level to some extent, and often carry up magnesium, sodium and iron to the very summits of those solar prominences. These wonderful exhibitions are generally seen in the vicinity of the sun spots, where the cyclonic action is clearly visible in the telescope, and where great changes are seen to take place in very short times.
If we consider the almost instantaneous connection which is observed between unusual disturbances of the solar surface and
EVENTS OF THE WEEK.
Christmas Festivities and Good Cheer.
Irrigation District Again Dismillated Without Prejudice by the Board of Supervisors. Attorney General to He Appalled to Correspondence Halmfall Peaty Burgaries.
Christmas Day passed quietly. There was a general suspension of business and our citizens gave them time up to good cheer. There were the usual number of Christmas dinners, and ditters had what is technically known as a picnic. In the evening a Xmas tree and entertainment at Music Hall was the feature. The affair was under the auspices of the young ladies of the Cheerful Workers and the Social Society composed of Anaheim's shelters well as most beautiful daughters. The candy booth was presided over by Misses Mary Kraemer and Jessie Witte. Misses Louise Schneider and Minnie Zoyn had charge of the "fish pond." The same fish pond, the lilions critic is moved to say, was a barefaced—Here are the facts: Beeleged by a lewitching damselfish "to go fishing," the horn editor squandered ten cents upon the pond, with the provision that the catch should be worth the full value of the amount expended. After waiting an unconsonable length of time—the while the ladies on the inside, with malice aforethought up on the part of the ladies on the outside, being made acquainted with the usual conviviality of horng editors in general, and knowing not the fisher was an exception—the same ladies on the inside proceeded to put up a job on the horse editor. When he beat was at length lifted, lo! a teapot! Ladies, horse editors never drink tea.
The flower booth was looked after by Misses Maggie Higgins, Hilba Witte, Lottie Beckington and Lazie Kinchel.
The supper table was under the supervision of Misses Fannie Higgins, Maggie Higgins, Clara Mossmann, Emma Schneider, Lalu James, Mrs. Goldthwaite, Mrs. Buck, Mrs. Avery, Mrs. Baneroft, Mrs. Wood, Mrs. Heiman, Mrs. Grimshaw and Mrs. Spraghe.
The entertainment opened with a Christmas carol, capitally rendered by a score of little children.
the ground is thoroughly soaked. The prospects now for the best season for several years.
It is said money is exceedingly "tight." If it is always so with us. Tax gathering times, that takes $1,250,000 out of the circulating medium of the people, makes money scarce for a Pine, in addition to the accommodation of National Treasury. If something is done to relieve the congested treasury we will see "higher" times without any good reason. The money is in the county, but locked up. Let it be circulated.
Wm. M. McFadden was elected at the last meeting of Chance Friends as representative to the Grand Council as its next annual communication at San Francisco the second week in April. K. A. White of Anaheim will also be a member of the next Grand Council as he selected one of the Grand officers at the last communication.
The Placentia school has closed for a three weeks' vacation. The same teachers will continue next term. We have had four months school. Expect to have five months more.
FULLERTON NOTES.
Christmas Eve Festivities J. B. Stone Trips the Light Fantastic.
One of the most enjoyable besides being the largest, gathering ever held at Fallerton was the Xmas Eve festivities given by the Fallerton Literary Club. Delegations were present from Flacentia, Orangesthorpe and the surrounding country. After an introductory speech by W. M. McFadden, in which he referred to the great progress Fallerton had made in the past year and her future prospects, which were far in advance of the most sanguine expectations, Santa Claus was intruded. Great credit is due to committee on the Christmas tree for the artistic manner in which the tree was arranged, and for the great amount of work accomplished by them. After the distribution of presents, which were many and vaded, singing was indulged by members of the club, until the arrival of Anaheim orchestra, when the floor was cleared for dancing. Among the most noticeable of the evening's festivities was the Old Folk'a Dance, led off by J. B. Stone and wife, and participated in by all the elderly people present, to the utter elation of the younger element.
It is needless to say that it was the dance of the evening, and that Mr. Stone can discount some of the younger folks in the renewal of his youth, and by the activity displayed by him on the floor. Dancing was kept up until a late hour, when the party disbanded, wishing each other a Merry Xmas. Quite a party from Anaheim attended the dance.
Our new church is growing daily, though probably have been killed. He was never seriously hurt to continue his journey, and was taken to Dierkha's board house for treatment.
PERSONAL MENTION.
George Benner of Marchisenville was in town on Christmas Day, visiting friends and relatives.
J. W. Atcherson of Colzmeba, Ohio, a friend of N. H. Mitchell, was in town for a few days last week.
Mrs. John Hartang returned from Las Angeles last week. "The baby" is "just the picture of life."
Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Heinmann and Lawrence Boltz spent their Christmas holiday with relaits here.
Supervisors elect Davis of Downay and Perry of Los Angeles were down to see their colleague, Mr. Littlefield, last week.
S. S. Pederman has been seriously ill for a few days past, unable to attend to his business duties. We hope to see him out again soon.
H. Z. Oeborne of the Express is an aspirant for Public Printer at Washington. The salary is $4,500 per year, besides "perquisites."
Mrs. J. J. Hopper arrived here last week on a visit to her husband. The couple left yesterday for Seattle, where Mr. Hopper will engage in business.

The entertainment opened with a Christmas carol, capitally rendered by a score of little children.
Company G then marched into the hall,
followed by the military band. The company executed its grate drill, which won it so much aplause at the recent regimental parade at Los Angeles. This is the color company of the regiment, and although the youngest is acknowledgment on all hands to be second to none in Southern California. The guardmen are ably offended, and elected much admiration while executing their difficult manual of arms, after which arms were attacked and the members participated in the special enjoyment of the evening.
Captain Wood apologized briefly upon the friendly feeling which the company has an organization entertain toward the young ladies. Individually the members, as is to be expected, cherish our young ladies as treasures of fond idolatry, but in view of the fact that the company was lately the recipient of a magnificent skig at the hatch of the ladies, it was deemed advisable that the company appear at the exhibition as an organization. During the evening the hand favored the audience with excellent music.
Little Grant McDermott reiterated "Christmas a year ago." The little lady showed a flare prose, and became an obconist enter.
Petty picture of the evening's entertainment is the tableau: "The Peacemaker," composed by the Misses Witte, two of our most lovely and ample populated young ladies, and Joseph Becker.
The Mr. Foy and Mandi Edelbens rended the Coma Whare the Lilia Grow." The morning manner.
Miss Foy daughter of our City Keeper, she was a selection from "Ernani," so that met with a loud recall. As an answer to give her waltz song, "Irene Good New." This was the young lady's first appearance in public and her charming voice was a letter of surprise as well as of gratification; the hundreds of her hearers. Both numbers were appreciated, and Miss碧 can lift highly flattered at her reception. We must have more of her singing in the future.
When supper was announced the tables were quickly filled, and toothsome delicacies were soon disposed. Great credit is due to Mrs. Baneroff, Mrs. Goldilittle, Mrs. Avery and Mrs. Buck for the colectant manor in which they conducted the cuisine.
Alogether the entertainment was a deserved success and when the five hundred people present left the hall it was with the satisfaction of knowing that Christmas had been very enjoyable past.
Among the recipients of presents from the Xmas tree nor were placed more than Lieutenant Galeo who was remembried by one of his many friends with a round of sausages. Ms.碧 received a pillow, although for what purpose not as definite; Fred Smythe was popular with the ladies, received a cologne. Fred wears his happiness smile and his mustache de conquête-aporter to beat advantage when holding himself to await the pleasure of the ladies. Besides these there were hundreds of other presents, some for the children and others of greater value for ladies and gentlemen.

PLACENTIA POINTERS
Regarding the Orange Industry Number of Carion to He Shipped.
Formulae: As the oranges begin to change color, from green to yellow, the buyers begin to come around and each one endeavors to make believe that there is an unusually large crop. It is of a greatly reduced value. The amount five hundred carloads is the estimate the buyers place upon the growing crop. It is well known that the Riveride crop is about one-half of Southern California, and the growers there estimate the crop this year at 750 carloads. So about 1,500 carloads will come near reaching the mark than 2,000. Let no one be deceived and sacrifice his fruit on account of these big stories. The crop of Placentia will not exceed former crops much of any. The tillman place will ship about twenty-five carloads. Dr. Tumbea and Wm. McFadden about three carloads each. Wm. Hadley four or five carloads. Tha. Staby A. T. Poulton J.B. McCallough Hannes T. N. Melbull and Mrs. Hassen about two carloads. The Northern place about one on land and John Dragan about two districts all paid and all goodwill tax, usually balanced of the best varieties, which will command the highest prices.
The new wool wash has so far restored confidence in the orange growers that they feel they can bump down the ravages of the scale if not terminated it. They propose to make expensive additions to their groves. Not less than 1,000 or 1,500 young orange trees will be planted in Placentia this season and several thousand walnuts. The defunct vineyards will so a give place to orange and walnut graves.
A Chandler proposes to resume pumping the oil wells north of Placentia. The excessive freight both by team and rail, absorbed all the profits, but the Santa Ana being nearer and the rates both by team and rail being reduced, the pumping will shortly be resumed.
The Christmas tree exercises at Placentia schoolhouse on last Saturday evening, on account of the rain shorn were postponed till Thursday (this evening). Visitors will be cordially welcomed.
About 3½ inches of rain fell the last storm;
