EVENTS OF THE WEEK. Poker Playing Celestials Come to Grief More About the Haze Lime Correspondence from Our Neighbour Election Hate Mail Charges Eff Ah Tong and Ah Seng played poker at a Chinese joint in Chinatown on Sunday and Mr. Song was beaten by Mr. Tong, who was aided and abetted in his refarious play by several moneyed Celestials who indulged in the game for the purpose of getting possession of Mr. Seng's boodle. The latter mongal was dealt four kings and Mr. Tong arranged the cards that four aces fell into his hand. Betting was lively and when Song finally "called" Tong, he was grinned at finding himself beaten. He refused to pay, wherefore Tong dealt him a blow across the head with a pipe, causing a severe fracture of the skull, supplementing the assault with a severe attack with a club. Song sought out Copatable Amythe, who searched Chinatown without avail. In the evening Tong made up his mind to call Los Angeles, and with that purpose he gathered his blankets and goggles and moved toward the California Central depot. He was arrested in the waiting room a short time before the 703 evening express went by, and brought back. After several questions he admitted having beaten Mr. Seng with a pipe, but claimed it was done in a spirit of fun, because the latter had tried to flashe him at poker. He was conveyed to Chinatown, and when confronted by the assailed party, the latter, after a fuselage of abuse and jabber on the part of about one hundred Celestials, declared that the poisoner was not the man who made the assault. Both were jailed up. On arrival with appeared in court to answer a charge of fighting. Haid was held while an amount was paid. Long a contemptuous person, Haid was ordered to leave Chinatown and was or that day left behind many of his friends and acquaintances with many flowers. Must have happened before this event, as there is no mention of any other significant events occurring during this period. Some ideas of the necessity to a bay will be learned when it is shown that there are few of us who do not at some time intend friends on grounds to the many of the sea. Do the land man rivers and harbors our interests and the great sea beyond, am but indeed plants affecting more or less perfectly the sky above. To how what lies beneath the one is as obscure as that which lies beyond the other. To the mariner this must not be first, the coast line must be drawn, and accurately located with reference to the coasts of other lands; for already it would not do to lead the mariner to expect navigable water where he would actually find dry land. No can the distances from Cape to Cape be measured by surveyor's sham, borne from object to object by hand, for the work would be intermittable and its accuracy insufficient. The first thing, then, is to measure a "baseline," establish its direction with reference to a true north and south line, and determine the latitude and longitude of one of its ends. It is a truth of mathematics that if one side and two angles of a triangle are known, the length of the other sides can be calculated with perfect accuracy. By the aid of this principle, and instruments of precision to measure the angles, the relative distances and positions of new points are determined. The distances so determined become new base lines, and so the work of measurement and location goes down the easter for hundreds and hundreds of miles. Some idea of the accuracy with which this done may be had from the following: A few years ago one base line was measured near Baltimore. Another was measured near Atlanta, some 600 miles distant. Two independent parties triangulated toward one another. They met midway on a common path. Each party computed the length of a line from its own data. It was some miles long, yet the difference between what was but half an inch! It may be asked, racy is the practical use of all this account Error, hence admitted, increases and multiplies, until finally it becomes inevitable in contiguing some outlying danger on the spot as to lure the mariner to death and destruction, instead of pointing out to him the path of safety. All that perfection of appliance and human skill can do should be done, and is done, to insure absolute correctness. In one typical case it was demonstrated that the accuracy of observation was near Baltimore. Another was measured near Atlanta, some 600 miles distant. Two independent parties triangulated toward one another. They met midway on a common tibble. Each party computed the length of a line from its own data. It was some miles long, yet the difference between what was but half an inch! It may be asked, why is the practical use of all this accurate Error? None admitted increases and so triples, until finally it can eventuate in coinciding some outlying danger on the at as to lure the hariner to death and destruction, instead of pointing out to him the path of safety. All that perfection of appliance and human skill can do should be done, and is done, to insure absolute correctness. In one typical case it was demonstrated that the accuracy of observation was such that if the signal 24 2:10 miles distant had been a target, the line of observation would have passed but one, half-inch from its mathematical centre. Angles are measured to the tenth of a second on a circle, of 360 degrees. A mean error of one second is permissable in the best quality of this work. The recent work of the Coast Survey has shown a mean error of only 51-100 of a second, equivalent to less than 1-10 of an inch of error in a circle a mile in diameter. The very best European work shows a mean error of from 59-100 to 70-100 of a second. When the inequalities of the ground over which the measurement is made are taken into consideration, the accuracy with which the length of a base-line is determined is almost incredible. The "Yolo Base Line," near Sasaramanto, was measured in 1881. Calling the line eleven miles long, the whole probable error falls within one-third of an inch. It is really amusing to see the enthusiasm that the words "Yolo Base Line" will excite in a member of the Coast Survey. They are one and all very proud of it, as well they may be, for such work was never done before. FULLERION FANCIES Combining the Waters of the Hamduwah townsville of Voters Eire. following information in regard to orange wine: "I have this day been shown and sampled some sweet orange wine made by A. Maltley & Son of this place. These gentlemen say the mistake has been in adding water to the juice of the orange. They being familiar with the process of grape wine-making, and experts as to the judging of its quality, say that the superiority of their sweet orange wine will make it command more than double the price of their finest grape wine. The sample shown me was elegant, being clear as fine old whisky, and having the bouquet to protection. These gentlemen are confident that the orange groves in Florida surpass the value and excellence of wine yield the grape vineyards of California. Though my enthusiasm passed away with my youth, yet I cannot help becoming excited a little over the prospect of Although the Sunday excursion train to San Juan has been taken off, the excursion rates still remain in force and passengers can be down and return on regular trains. There will be another cheap excursion to Corona Beach, Saturday, October 27th. The new from Anaheim is $3.50 for round trip. Two passes Anaheim 10:30 A.M. are good returning until the following Monday. Train leaving San Diego 4:20 P.M. Brigadier General R. H. Orton, Adjutant General of the State, has issued to the several companies of the Seventh infantry, First brigade, N. G. C., 400 new McKeever catridge boxes, caliber 45; 400 new steel bayonet scabbards and 400 new waist belts and plates. They are all furnished by the United States and are of the best quality. Tax new uniforms to be furnished by the State will soon be issued to Companies A, B and C, but the Legislature will have to make an additional appropriation before the other companies can get them. Some havoc was created by the firing of Alex Henry a gas pipe cannon at the Democratic meeting on Wednesday evening of last week. Plastering was torn from ceilings and glass broken in some quantity. The piece finally "Ricked" itself through a picket fence, striking and demolishing a pump in its flight, and when dinally discovered it was so far away that the combined efforts of a large searching party of interested spectators were occupied for such a length of time that no more explosions were possible during the evening. The boundaries of voting districts in this neighborhood are somewhat singularly constructed. Anaheim precincts confined to the corporate limits of the city. Voters north and south of us, who have cast their ballots here from time immemorial, will go through town and vote at Fairview precinct. The officers of this latter precinct are probably as widely separated as in any precinct in the county. Mr. Schern, the inspector, halls from North Anaheim, Mr. Polhema is from Miraflores and Alex Henry—the nearest of the trio to the polling place—lives nearly two miles away. When Charley Cook entered the Anaheim Hotel on Monday evening, faintlessly attired in his Sunday suit and Harrison plog hat, he was saked by a three-hundred-pound stranger if he also wore a quince with his hat. Not understanding the question he was told that none but Chinaman with largesized pigtails wore Harrison hats. There men say the mistake has been in adding water to the juice of the orange. They being familiar with the process of grape wine-making, and experts as to the judging of its quality, say that the superiority of their sweet orange wine will make it command more than double the price of their finest grape wine. These gentlemen are confident that the orange groves in Florida surpass in value and excellence of wine yield the grape vineyards of California. Though my enthusiasm passed away with my youth, yet I cannot help becoming excited a little over the prospect of manufacturing our splits," drops" and "oulls" into a wine which has no superior. Perty to fifty oranges and two pounds of sugar make a gallon of wine of a quality of which these men say they will buy 50 barrels any day at $1-50 per gallon, and they would expect to make $1 a gallon clear at that, and could sell the entire product of Florida. The fruit must be peeled, pressed and strained, and then racked off twice and allowed to become one year old before marketed. The time is almost at hand when such deposition may be made of inferior fruit. What then will be the market value of our choice fruit held in cold storage until there is good demand? Let our people all make a small keg of wine this year, after the above plan and it will soon become known that sweet orange wine is the finest in the world. A Card We desire to correct analse impression held by many in regard to our management of companies playing in the opera-house, of which we are the lessees. Respectfully, PELLEGRIN BEON & LANDELL. Tuesday night Jackson Emerson entered the Pilgrims' East Church, at Fulton Mn., drew a revolver and fired at his wire Nina. The shot sattened her body and the woman fell over dead. The congregation stamped. The preacher jumped out of a second-story window. Emerson is in jail and there are strong threats of lynching. The parties are colored. Grand Hall A grand hall will be given at Music Hall on Friday evening, October 26th, by the Anaheim Orchestra. A cardial invitation is extended to everybody.
