A STRANGE NIGHT.
Jackson and I college and began the inaugural little of each year last met before the author. In confirmation of the acceptance on all matters to the editor. Be sure to look at the point. All the authors have struggled hard to earn a place in town and spend two months in farm and so we old country town down the South side as our home as our place in water law.
Therefrom an old and well-worn shooting jacket and some papers had to be arranged before I slept. Then I throw my suit on the loosely and prepared for a good hour's work.
Thus far, and no further, had I got with my arrangements when I heard a door in the passage shagged with hideous noise, and a sickly thief at my heart told me something awful was about to happen. Some one came along the passage with the uncertain shuffling step of a drunken man, and my door was shaken as if by some one trying to find the handle, and then Jackson burst into the room. He advanced into the light of the shaded lamp, but so changed that at first glance I did not recognize him. The face this but a few minutes ago was flushed and smiling was now rigid and set; the complexion were a grimly blue tinge, and every particle of color had died on his sheeks. His eyes had dilated, and his short, early hair was absolutely erent. He stood staring at me with one hand raised and his mouth open, and gasping as though struggling to speak. To be hot in a lonely house at dead waste and middle of the night with such a figure would be sufficient to try a strong fainn's nerves, but I (strange to say) was perfectly self possessed.
I held in my hand a wratched weather-besten old brief, which had been flugered by generations of lawyers, a case that had been tried at various prehistoric courts and continued and resuscitated by Judges known to history. Then it was replaced in its original tin box to wait for the peril when I gaily bedlight of wig and sown, should fort to do battle on behalf of the promising young hair who had died of obligation before I was half finished at Oxford. However, this but Iannotated parenthood was a stoet fink, which was sufficient to bind me to the great commonplaces of life just at sleep.
"What on earth's the matter with you? I asked, laughing: 'Have you swallowed the rest-room poker?'
Jackson did not notice my mockery, but remained grapple. Power of speech returned after a while, and I managed to make out through his gaps and shows a low murmur. On that I seen it. I've seen her—the picture in my room. The light went out. I looked at the door, she's there now!
I contested I was really frightened, but my pride would not allow me to do it. I assumed a rockerish awakening air which wicked and asters there are no such thing as ghosts and haunted rooms in real life—the same Jackham never spat ankle under that roof! The house had five times within five years, and the hawne never remained in possession more days as the longest, and in stance a man has been forced lead in that room. He died from natural causes. It would be skinned to seals and shadows had arisen before and slowly awakened man which froze of him in one awful shoulder a short terrace.
Plow Boeper
Kansas Paper
This is a question that ought to be everybody in the country—how to get the soil at the earliest possible day that may derive the greatest benefit there. This matter of plowing deeper things that should be carefully leavened by some of the newer states. Why that abundance exists toward shallow plowing? It is hard to say unless it be that is an exceedingly fertile and so easily that good crops can be easily produced out much effort. Still, as a matter of this building new shallow plowing be corrected. The tendency is not entertaining country is to cut the possible furrow that the team can be. The disposition seems to be to cultivate larger savage land to gain every part with that the plow will turn. Farmer cannot go much out of one they hug closer to the eastern dirt stirring. A practical lesson was taught in many places affected by drought in this respect. With flushed stood side by side the differing attitudes in plowing made the difference of a fast and wholly stop. The difference of wool made the difference between a fall drop a fatal failure. Nar was this observed confined to one State alone. Kansas and Nebraska, the three great corn States exemplified the lesson. In this we with our porous subsoliland rich soil, is no prince for not plowing Crops if rooted deeply will flourish enslaved evaporation alone, without at the finish rain. All know that the few inches of the loose air supply is less dense, while below below like lumps most earth with its endless supply of element for the rest of life.

At about 2 o'clock in the morning we made a move toward bed. We had arranged that I was to have Jackson room and Jackson was to sleep in the unfurnished room as before mentioned. Jackson turned away whistling cheerfully to himself.
But I was not going to bed yet. I had a great deal to do first. I had to wheeze a soft, graceful sofa in front of the fire and surround it by a wide-spreading screen, so that I had every particle of warmth and light to myself. Then I had to open a pertmanent and take room and along the passage, some of nothing but a mail adress to be in the light again and beside a human being.
Jackson was still sitting pale and strenched. He looked at me when I entered, and with his tight-drawn, rigid lips formed the words, "You see it."
"I've seen it," I shuffleded, "all! It will not remain in this accused house and moment longer. It may follow us here and then I shall go."
"You're right," he said, "we must not stop here—let us go." He took his hand, and together we drapt stealthily down the stairs, and only pausing to take our hats and clatter, let ourselves out of the front door.
It was a clear, frosty night, the moon shone down coldly and the clouds were sudden before the stars. The wind blew on our feathered frames, and we shivered.
The sudden transition from the overhated house, with its maidening terror, to the redne winter night made a strange impression upon me. I cannot describe the sensation. But I can feel it. We traversed the little garden walk in silence. When we got to the gate Jackson passed, turning round, spoke: "There is the window," he said, with a slight tremble in his voice; there is the window of that horrible room; it looks harmless enough, yet I wonder, in the name of mercy, what devil's tricks are going forward at this moment.
Our walk had brought us to the left corner of the house, and the window was just about eight feet over our heads. As he spoke the window was illuminated by a strange blubb light. It lit up the room in a waggy way. Nothing was invisible, yet nothing was perfectly distinct, and in the middle of the room there was a black motionless figure of a woman. We stood in silence for perhaps five minutes, then the light gradually died away, and nothing was left but the dark framework of the window.
I motionlessly to Jackson to come away, but he stood his ground firmly. I looked at him in the moonlight, and was surprised at the change that had come over him. He had entirely moored his manhood. The zolder had returned to his sheek and his face wore the old easy-going calm expression. He smiled upon me, and said quietly: "Dick, old boy. I've been a fool, a madman, a soward; but I'm all right now. I shall not run away from the old house. Not all the ghosts and pictures and dark rooms in the world would frighten me new. You can come with me if you like. I'm going back to probe the matter to the bottom."
And I went with him. We probed the matter to the bottom, but we discovered very little. Armed with the lamp, we entered the mysterious room, but all was disinterred as on the first occasion when we visited it. The malancholy-yed lady looked down on us as sadly, and the walls seemed as black, and the curtains and fixtures were as dasy as ever, but we found no explanation of the horrible figure we had seen.
We spent the night by the fire in armchairs, and next morning I returned to London.
Here my story ends. I do not expect any one to believe it. Announcing to Mrs: Bedg.

MISCULTURAL NOTES
The standard Current
Canotians hardly realize the beauty of
the common current when trained in tree form. Canvast bushes too often appear as ant companions only to brambles and weeds in molested forms carvers, and the snag-tails to grow them for ornament may seem alerting. Not well-trained currents and good berries are highly ornamental and useful and form beautiful objects in the mixed borders.
Training currants in the tree form should begin with the planting of the cutting by removing every bad but the upper site, so as to throw all the strength into the terminal shoot. If a law heading tree is desired this shoot is cut off the second year where all the branches are to form the branch. Not more than her upper side shoots should be allowed to grow. The following year these are also cut, back, and each succeeding year the strongest shoots have to be shortened in the impervious bases and sil wood, not out altogether so as to maintain an open, well-shaped hold. If a higher stem is desired the terminal growth has to be encouraged for two or three years' parting off all side branches every year from time to time until the proper height is reached.
Somewhat more care is necessary to train currants in tree form than in a bush, but the principal reason why it is not more frequently practiced that when the current bear cuts into the stem the whole tree is best. Winn season, however, the Missouri current especially are almost entirely exempt from the attacks of the borer, and by using these stocks he grazed, the gopher varietals the danger from borer-reduced twins miners. To fruit grows who have never seen currants trained in this manner experts admit will short much interest.
Pampas culture
The pampas grass is grown in many places for its plums. Santa Barbara in the summer of this business. The pampas thrives best in a moist, rich soil, and there presides most phones, which in many instances measure forty inches in length, with a spread in written feet, and a few have found four growing but not so tall. The pampas being suppressed about first of September, during the winter tip is full of the thirteen inches they are planted upon an air-weather earth, where they remain at all compare, with those produced in the interior valleys. A good rale must be dried in the open air, and this is all but impossible, where there is much moisture present.
The results of the experiments that may be made in grafting the Muscat on other stocks will be watched with much interest. Certainly there would seem to be no good inherent reason why this may not be successfully done, and many vineyardists thus be put into a profitable channel.
Orange Pidating in Florida
Theory is all right after practice has elucidated it, and time, that proves all things has satisfactorily solved the problem. Probably there are more plans for making citrus groves than the total number in this State. Night variations from bastan paths are to be expected, owing to the local differences in the topography of the land, soil and other obvious reasons.
Citrus trees are the most tenacious of life of any tree or shrub known to the horticulturist. Whenever a serious accident happens to an orange tree, nature stops in ahead of all quack doctors and makes good the injury in the shortest possible time, and thereafter, if judiciously fed and cultivated, will respond right royally to increase the balance in bank of the fortunate owner.
In this connection it should be borne in mind that the vital or vulnerable part of an orange tree, or any other overgrowth, is its roots, and the foundation of diseased trees can be tested to the worst than criminal neglect in exposing them to sun and wind when being transplanted. If you bring a mole on almond palmlander to the surface the first thing it does is to attempt to get under ground again in the shortest possible time, and so avoid the costs of an orange tree if they only had the power of volition.
But the all-absorbing question is: What is the best plan for making a grove? Seven years ago Captain R A Shaw lazily depreciated located at Orlando and began to make a grove. After properly preparing the land for setting out seedling trees was commenced. From averaging one to one and one half at the crown were selected, with all important requisite of good roads and plenty of them. Persons passing his grounds would often remark That man is going to set out a grove. See he has
The scale bug pest, though a small change from its earlier appearance, rapidly makes a very large impact on the crops it affects. It is often rooted deeply, will flourish from soil evaporation alone, without the need for irrigation. The first case of the loaf affliction was in dry and white below chin hay plumes; the second case with its endless supply of oats for the routite, which could pose a dryer affliction. The mineral in slow deeper and plant matter has low flow of a narrow furrow and can be it and you will gain in the end.

Advance in Wheat
There was a remarkable advance in wheat last Thursday. It was home of a corner in the city by Hutchinson, who has been buying all other wheat offered lately. As only days remained for the shortage in they went into the pit. Drought and beginning to bid bad cash with the issue that the prime minister When if reached 2125. Hutchinson but the short word that he had wheat they flocked to his office where he got at 325,000 bales at 425 in a short time. After telling those of the still waiting that wheat would go to within a week he went away to his office instructions with his bakers to sell short all the wheat they wanted at or buy all they would sell at 2125 an assumption that Hutchinson also had of the December wheat, and in addition that option want applied. This meant after the adjustment was ever than that which arrived during the advance in wheat.
Pampas Culture
The pampas grass is grown in many places for the plants Santa Barbara in the summer of this business. The pampas thrives best in a moist, rich soil, and there presides over fertile inches in length with a spread in width of two feet, and a few have four feet growing that not so tall. The pines being suppressed appear at first of September, due to their size is out of the sixth three. Our incipiens are prilled and placed upon warm earth, when they remain their which requires two or three days. When times they are smaller and turned two or three times, as to bring each side to the sun by day and the few as night, in written them. When properly cultivated it is well to place them in layers of a foot or more on silhouette in a closed building where they generate a little deepest, and thereby can be packed for shipping.
Growing Oilseeds
Oilseeds were used very early, numerous and only poorly on those of a poor thorough treatment nature, consequently make the oil profitable a man needs to be careful in making a selection for an infant purchaser. Low land which has been widely trained than the customs regulations on crops and rivers are usually well adapted to onion cultures. We show some commercial trains in Alaska country where they are based at width on such far away simply account of their adaptability to uncontrolled drops being almost certainly the drop being already carried through the season may be forty carriages. These heavy packs when worn transport and maintain cold snows are scarps, and are not affected by strong winds.
Memedies for Plant Diseases
Memedies was been used by the United States Department of Agriculture with considerable success. Distinct treatments available include the pertains of vegetation during winter months and contain dehydrating infestations material and washing the plants with protective wipes or sprayes. All phases of plant diseases are minimized with appropriate care.
During the growing season the strength of the overwintering crop is important because it helps maintain health of the plants while they grow and keep them healthy until they die. In the early spring of the season must ensure that they do not suffer any damage during this period. Malaria yields quickly in the tropical regions of India and these areas continue to face successful attacks on their patients in both rooms. But continually moving toward the body of the patient while central rumor is continually administered. That the Indians of the country are constantly easily to be seen. They have often to conquerable age, and say every organism that the white man is a sickly fellow who has gray hair while their own is still black.
A recent incident of the generators Indiana and then annually administrated to him by the Indians seemed to take hold of him in every part of his body, and that for twenty days he was covered up and sweating probably it seemed to him that they were getting it washed out and every organ of his body cleaned. A few days remained for the sugar to withstand gradual rains in the market, and they looked to his office where he set out $25,000 bushels at $125 in a short time. The moment after the adjustment was ever closer than that which new arrival during the of the boat. The price was up in wonderful rapidity above the pleasing ones by cornbread dealers. The ad was marked by almost a street bid. The price reached $150 for September's sidewalk trading season, and it is reported as $151.
Submerged vineyards in France are submerged vineyards planted in supernable soil have suffered invasion by the phylloxera, and summer watering has resorted to, to dislipate the evil latter proceeding has furnished stock-wells, and cannot be too highly recommended in a general manner, is addition to from the phylloxera the sugar and lamination of the rine is greatly enlarged. Certain proprietors make a special subvention in April and in May when spring frosts are expected, the process preserving them goes from low.
Vineyards planted in view of submergence usually devoted to heavy production are namely, the Aramon, Petit Bommel and Carignans. The production has attained an average of one thousand hundred gallons perrain well managed vines. The wine has been exceptionally selling at 21 cents a gallon. The valine may arrange for submarion. It is about $800 per year, varying somewhat with the location. The annual amount of submarion alone is from $12 to $160 per year.

It will be interesting to know whether Muscat grape or wine varieties will do well or not in soil proven not to be adapted to that grape when its own stock. On the principle of the use of resistant stocks against the phylloxera, it may be that the wine grape stock will produce raisin grapes equally well as fruit of their own kind.
The owners of wine vineyards near the coast or anywhere within reach of the lage from the ocean should not attempt the failure of raisin grapes.
