The Gazette closes to day the eighteenth year of its publication. Eighteen years ago the paper first set sail open the journalistic area, and since then has been pliantly sailing upon its course. It is the oldest paper in Los Angeles county, and with one exception the San Diego Union, a most excellent and worthy newspaper, the oldest in Southern California. Eighteen years is a long time a very long time. Especially lengthy is it what reference is had to the life of a newspaper. Many newspapers have been born have warded and waived and ceased to exist during these high notes a store of years. Great conflicts have waged between men and nations. Dynasties have fallen and gone to miracle with the forgotten elements; wars, the powerful of the earth, the wise, the good, fair forms have laid them down with patriarchs of the infant world all in one mighty suspender. Eighteen years ago the obsess of our civil war had worse died out our land had hardly recovered from the shock. California had not foreseen its greatness nor had our own imperial county dreamt of the grandeur it was destined to attain in the coming years. And Anahiem was all but unknown. The Gazette labored attentively for the welfare of the village, and now that Anahiem has grown into a thriving and vigorous city, the journal is found still battling by its side. And yet times have come, which now we hope are hardly past, when all was not noteried. For eighteen years is a very long time in the history of a newspaper. The office was once completely destroyed by fire, but rose. Pamour like from its ashes. Perhaps a few ammonias have been made; it were a miracle had not been but not been, but those name not warranted by the process that is not divine. Disagreement, too, perhaps but those have been put aside, passed and been forgotten. Yes, and friends have come in the hour of need, friends whose fellowship is rivaled as with hands of steel friends in adversity and friends in joyfulness and weal, for a newspaper's life sometimes is happy. The Gazette has striven to prove acceptable to its readers not only in our valley but to those ment at this late day. Our petition will be heard on next Monday. It is the third time that the Supervisors will listen to our appeal. No other irrigation district has met to meet the obstacles which we have encountered. SUPERVISOR ROWAN, we are informed, is in favor of attaining presentation of our irrigation district here to the city of election being himself the Democratic candidate for Shariff. He has not care, however, antagonize those voters at Yorba. So it is said. Mr. Rowan is credited with having the support of a number of Republicans in this neighborhood, and he will also pull his undivided party vote. But as to the question of antagonizing voters, Mr. Rowan will look to our valley for votes as well as to Yorba. Yorba polls some thirty five votes, and it is said that Mr. Aguirre stands quite well amongst them—that he will have a majority in the largely democratic preset. As to the authenticity of the statement we know little and sore less. But the interesting fact remains that by turning his hand in favor of our irrigators—who for the third time are knocking at the gates to be saved from rain and disaster—Mr. Rowan will so implant himself in their hearts that he will have a solid vote in this neighborhood. The Anaheim tavern sarcastically asks us when the division of the court becomes an issue in this campaign. We answer it is not an issue, and we hope it won't be one, but our esteemed neighbor of last week pointed not to me over here that we were bucking and kicking against some of the candidates in the Anaheim district through a local jerseyly. As a matter of fact the Staunton has done more and strived harder to get both sides of the river to pay aside their ancient funds than any one in the valley. It also advocated nominating a member of the Board of Supervisors from the west side of the river in the interest of peace and harmony, and has made no things from a local standpoint, except in reply to the GAZETR. Local feeling will enter less into this campaign than any previous one as far as we are informed. So far as we are concerned we wish to draw no divisions line, unless a spirit of that kind crops out conspicuously upon the part of our Anaheim friends. If we do, it will be on the county division question, and that's will be on the Supervisor question. A petition for the pardon of Judge Terry is being drawn up, and will be presented to his friends for signature in a few days. His attorneys, R. Porter Asha and T. H. Williams, left for Washington on Tuesday, and it is thought their errand is in behalf of Judge Terry. Governor Waterman has forwarded to the Board of Supervisors his election proclamation, calling for a general election on Tuesday, November 6th. A Collapse Druggist.
