THURSDAY ... AUGUST 16, 1850
The Odd Fellow's excursion on September 20th should be made the occasion of a grand jollification. From present indications it appears that the incoming host will completely captures the town, whereas it is well for us to set about and by simple hospitality and cheer capture the good grace of our visitors. It will be a long time before so distinguished a body as the Navalign Grand Lodge will be in our midst. Representative men of high order from all sections of the aviation earth, their power to do as good is greater than any other which has off late been evacuated us. Added to this is the fact that our valley is just coming into prominence. Last year, when the hosts of Easterners were seeking Los Angeles, Panama and San Diego, a dozen in the hands had known that we offered advantages second to no chance in the state. The Navalign Grand Lodge will be in the East in time to speak of this country before this fall immigration begins. If it is shock that here is made the most palatable of these experiments in California, without family ties they will remain to them human beings in our environment on plains. We are something like a dozen passenger trains a day through our settlement, besides as many more carrying freight, and when the Southern Pacific公路 there shorten from the coast to Alaska and Canada we shall be able to descend New York and everything else. And the making of maritime export and something else.
A CORRESPONDENT of the San Diego Union writing from Santa Ana speaks of the settlement of Anahiem. When San Diego becomes better acquainted with us, by reason of our short time to that city, it will understand that no "settlement" in California has more substantial worth than Anahiem. We have a better foundation and better future than any town in California. More building has been done and commenced in the past six months than in ten years before. NEW ADVERTISMENTS
Mort of the Northern District has issued an order to compel the states showing that the unauthorized railway at various stations and a wharf discharged all various other matters which have been at work upon the several lines of railroad in his division. Heather more strict and rigorous rules will be enforced if every man upon the road must be discharged. There is an absence of courtesy to passengers, contractors and dockmen are frequently negligent, careless and unclean, and their answers to travelers cause grunt and unsatisfactory conditions. A "demoralized condition for a great railroad corporation to be in." And not far from the truth, either. All of these matters must be righted, and varnished there too before the road will properly serve the people as a common carrier. No discrimination in round trip tickets, for instance, should be made in favor of one section to this district of another. The price of tickets sold in Los Angeles good for the round trip at $1.30 should not be held at $1.70 here. The people look askance at any railroad company guilty of these "miscreations." The train men upon the entire Santa Fe system are notably at variance with their Southern Pacific brethren in these matters. The latter have much to learn before they may alter the "demoralized" state of affairs existing upon their road. It would seem strange, however, that Mr. Mur should have delayed his protest until the time when the California Central and Southern are opening their competition with time in the southern counties.
The President, being unable under the law to reto the jobs in the river and harbor bill and save the useful provisions, has allowed the measure to begin a law without his signature. In some of the States all appropriation bills are considered stem by items, and the shall remain from the wheat; but as yet Congress has not seen fit to consider that desirable power upon the national executive. It should, however, be done. Under present limitations, a single necessary appropriation can be forced to cover a multitude of steals, and to save the Mississippi levees, the President is obliged to serve the petty jobbary of this city that Congressman who wants his duck pond improved. There is a load call for reform.
The meteorology of Mr. Cleveland's term makes an interesting study. Since he became President, Mr. Tibidan, John Kelly, Edgar K. Aggar, Hubert O. Thompson and Daniel Manning, Democratic leaders of his own State, have passed away; the army has lost General Hancock and General Sheridan; the country General Grant, ox President Arthur, General McCallan, David Davis, Rososon Conkling, Thomas A. The micrology of Mr. Cleveland's term makes an interesting study. Since he became President, Mr. Tilden, John Kelly, Edgar K. Apgar, Hubert O. Thompson and Daniel Manning, Democratic leaders of his own State, have passed away; the army has lost General Hancock and General Sheridan; the country General Grant, ex-President Arthur, General McClellan, David Davis, Roscoe Conkling, Thomas A. Hemdicks, General Logan, Henry Ward Beechar and a host of lesser notables. At least eight of the men whose names are given in the flush of apparent health and strength four years ago, and busy in the political activities of the Cleveland campaign.
Wiley Crooby assumes management of the boom-disserted Grand View Hotel in the laughable "Bunch of Keys," he gives immediate token of his ability to make the home second to none. "Mr. Front" is admonished that "if any guests arrive, if any should arrive, to run up stairs and ring every bell in the house." New we would say to our readers, when our visiting Old Pellows arrive, let us simulate the example of the electric bells. Suppose the City Fathers, to begin at the beginning, gather in the tall sunflowers that bloom upon some of our streets and byways, and yards be given a cleaning. Let us try to have our new sidewalk laid, if not the whole, at least in part. Let us show our distinguished visitors that we are doing quite well. Let everybody show them that we are glad they came and intend to make their short stay among us something which they can look back to with pleasure.
Charmino Louise Dillon is in Los Angeles with Frobman's Lyceum Theater Company. Everybody adores Miss Dillon because she is surpassingly beautiful and an actress of true merit. We simply make these remarks as we recall the prophecy of a certain man, that when the roll of America's greatest and most beautiful actresses shall be written, the names of Mary Anderson, Mather, Rahan and Louise Dillon will be first—and pretty Dillon will be on top—or oncored, we don't know which.
General Schofield will succeed General Sheridan in command of the army. Schofield is 58 years of age, a native of New York and as the entrench of the war was marrying in an inferior rank. His known ability pointed him out to Liamh for promotion,
It is plainly evident that those who adhere through the dull season do the business. Look over the village papers, pick out the firms who advertise, and see if we are not correct in this statement. One of our business men who knows the worth of an ad, and to us last week: "Why, I would pay twice as much for an ad, through the dull season as through the busy season if compelled to, and if a person wants to see the direct benefit of an ad, he will never have a better chance than through the dull season."
General Sheridan's will was admitted to probate Monfy. To Mrs Kate Sheridan, his mother, since deceased, he left the Ohio homestead, in less simple. All the rest of his property he leaves to his wife, Mr. V. Sheridan, and Lunley Kent, his attorney, to receive in trust, the rents, etc., for the maintenance and education of his four children. The petition states that the personal estate consists of $2,721 in money, $8,000 in stocks, etc., $3,000 in wounds, etc., $3,000 in household furniture, $600 in horses and a carriage, and $500 in the house at Nonquitt.
Information has been received at San Francisco that last Friday evening a party of campers who were located on the eastern slope of Mount Diablo started a fire in the brush near their camping place, which, fanned by a brisk breeze that was then blowing soon got beyond control and finally spread into a great mountain fire, and it is understood that the entire eastern slope has been swept bare and that the loss in fencing, feel and shock will reach several thousand dollars.
Coronado Beach residents want to incorporate as a separate city, but the city officials of San Diego claim Coronado to be within the corporate limits of San Diego city, and a suit is now pending against the Coronado Beach corporation to compel them to pay city taxes.
The resignation of State Horticultural Commissioner A. Scott Chapman of San Gabriel has been sent to Governor Waterman. Frank A. Kimball of National City and N.W. Blanchard of Ventura county are apologous as successors in offices to Mr. Chapman.
The yellow fever panic at Jacksonville, Florida, continues, and people are rapidly leaving the city. Hotels and restaurants are closed and business is paralyzed. Many magnes are out of work, and it is feared they will plunder the unoccupied houses.
A large dynamite bomb containing enough explosive to demolish an entire train was found on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad tracks at Sixteenth and Halsted streets Tuesday morning. The police suspect the Burlington strickers or sympathizers. They have no clue, however.
