EVENTS OF THE WEEK.
A Quiet Fourth for Those Who Stayed at Home.
Outward Freight on the Southern Pacific. Suspicion Attaches to a Celestial's Death. Mailroad Humory
Yesterday was a quiet day for the Glorious Fourth. Nearly everybody was away. Some went to Los Angeles to witness the pollination and others strayed off to different places to pass the national holiday. Company G left on the morning train for Los Angeles to take part in the regimental parade. It was the first turnout of our soldier boys' away from home. They were a jolly set as they marched away, intent on being the best-drilled company in the line. Those of our people who stayed at home were in town solely for business reasons. All business places were closed and the day passed in silence. Some small boys exploded the time honored firecracker and bomb. Flags were displayed as usual and buttered lazily in the soft breeze. They seemed to take upon themselves the air of somnolence observable everywhere. When the train from Los Angeles arrived in the evening, bringing back many visitors and our creek military company, an air of activity was again discernible. Every one reported an excellent day a pastime, and hoped in future to have the day celebrated at home.

for Sang's death, failing to pay, which Sin Si Wu was to be taken prisoner and his Chinese store closed by the highbinders. Sin was badly scared at the announcement and immediately set about making ready to give the invaders a warm reception. Late on Tuesday evening, the highbinders not putting in an appearance, Sin's establishment was closed, and everybody slept with their eyes open, ready to meet and receive anybody who should try to capture Sin Si Wu.
AN IMPORTANT QUESTION.
Development of the Lands in the Anaheim Water District.
EDITOR GAETTE—Your writer thinks it opportune to lay the following facts, as they appear to him, before the residents of this district: We are expecting next fall a heavy immigration and large increase of population. Nine-tenths of the people here own twenty or forty acres tracts are willing to dispose of one-hall, believing that by close attention to a small tract, say five to ten acres, they can realize more than from twenty or forty acres, which requires too much labor, and cannot be attended as carefully as should be. What will be the consequence in regard to irrigation? A man owning five acres will irrigate and most likely use more water than the one who owns twenty or forty acres. The Miles and the Collier tracts will be subdivided into acre tracts. Some 1,600 acres of the former Kraemer tract are now being subdivided into five and ten acre tracts. This lays outside the irrigation district. A former owner has asked that the land be included in the irrigation district. In view of the question of the formation of a district under the Wright bill action was deferred. It is about a month since the Supreme Court rendered its decision on the validity of the Wright bill and your writer believes that by this decision a former decision on the riparian rights is affected and annulled; but your writer being no lawyer can give it only as his opinion that the two decisions contradict themselves.
This increase in population and small holdings is all right for winter irrigation; but what in summer; now is the time for action and preparation; not wait until next winter or spring. Intelligent purchasers will look and inquire into these things. The interest of every resident is involved in the water question, be he merchant or landowner. It is an admitted fact that our water supply in the river in summer has diminished from year to year, principally caused by the development of the country above us; they withdrawing more and more water from the river. The water supply in this section has been held by the Anaheim Union Water Company. Will not now the question arise, what will the water company do to supply an increased demand? and what can it do? Everybody says and knows that for Sang's death, failing to pay, which Sin Si Wu was to be taken prisoner and his Chinese store closed by the highbinders.

ANAHEIM AND POMONA ROAD TO BE ABSORBED BY THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC
Anaheim is on the one of a revolution in railroad matters, or no faith can be placed in "signs." It may be set down as a fact that the Anaheim, Olinda and Pacific company, or the latter company will build from Anaheim through the rich Placentia district. The field is a most tempting one, and there is every reason to believe that the Southern Pacific so regard it and are about to act on that belief.
Judge Fagan, of the Santa Fe, was in town on Tuesday calling for a right of way for a road from Richfield to Fullerton, but it was refused with great unanimity. It seems that the company decline to give any decent facilities near the thickly settled Placentia district, and therefore the proposed road would be a detriment rather than a benefit. It is somewhat strange that the company cannot grasp the situation sufficiently to see that it is decidedly to their interest to give the Placentia people the accommodations they ask for. This abuses need, however, little importance, as it is probable that the Southern Pacific will take a more sensible and business-like view of the situation and take the patronage and frought which the Santa Fe seems to care little about. The voluminous statistics of the productions of Placentia district, which was compiled at the request of the Southern Pacific.

But also late how nicely was that gotten up to suit a good and faithful janzero.A director moves to change a rule for years established and other directors without looking into-the matter or reason of such an unusual motion, approve and pass it,但 by action of these interested stockholders and irrigators it was nipped.

Placentia district, and therefore the proposed road would be a detriment rather than a benefit. It is somewhat strange that the company cannot grasp the situation sufficiently to see that it is decidedly to their interest to give the Placentia people the accommodations they ask for. This abstuse, however, is little importance, as it is probable that the Southern Pacific will take a more sensible and business-like view of the situation and take the patronage and frought which the Santa Fe seems to care little about. The voluminous statistics of the productions of Placentia district, which was compiled at the request of the Southern Pacific company, and which has been forwarded to headquarters, show that the shipments from the Placentia depot would be greater than at any other depot on the Santa Fe line between Los Angeles and San Diego, with the possible exception of Orange and Santa Ana. Thus, at least, is the assertion of those who have seen the statistics mentioned and have given the matter some study.
But whatever way the railroad cat jumps, Anaheim will be benefited. It is slowly assuming the position of a railroad center, and there are few towns in the county which have a better prospect ahead than this city.
CHINESE CLUB AND SOCIETY GOSSIP
A name of Poker, a Dend thimman and the Highbindero.
Chung Foo Sang and Ah Sau played Chinese poker on Sunday last with the result that San flapped his moosiness against the cailing. After Sang had won the bocella Saa requested the loan of a dollar from Sang, refusing to do which San at last wanted upon Sang's Chinese nose with such effect that Sin Si Wau avers Sang was knocked completely out. Sang subsequently caused the arrest of Mr. San, who was fined ten dollars for battery. Neglecting to forfeit the coin San was taken to the County Jail on Monday by Deputy Constable Jack Landell. Sang invested a plenty of his winnings in diversemijohs of Chinese jin, went to bed and asked the assistance of a Chinese doctor. At half past 5 on Monday Sang was dead. A Celestial claiming relationship with Sang started the story that the latter had been poisoned at the instigation of Sin Si Wau. Two or three dozen men discussed the situation in Sin Si Wau's establishment on Monday evening, and all seems to the conclusion that the man had been poisoned. Dr. Hardin was the first to examine him. He pronounced life almost fuel, there being still a faint action of the heart. Coronar Meredith held an inquestion Tuesday and found that Sang had come to his death by heart disease superinduced by disease of the liver.
There being a lingering suspicion in the minds of some Chanmen here that Sin Si Wau had caused the man's death, a notice was served upon him that a delegation of Los Angeles highbaders would be down on Tuesday evening to claim an amount of money
Your writer would also like to know how Superintendent spends his time and where, as he has never seen him on any of the ditches in the central or western part of the district. A monthly or weekly report from him to the public of the water carried in the upper ditches would not be amiss or unreasonable. It has lately happened that large and unreasonable expenses were caused to the water company by the closing or removing of ditches. Is it not the duty of the Superintendent to see to this and report all such changes to the directors forthwith. If not, such should be done.
I heard a few dollars of water cost the company about $50 expenses in constructing a new ditch!
Can anybody explain why the people on the south side of the river are more prosperous and land values higher than those on the north?
Is there any good reason why we should not gladly embrace the opportunity for a change; and why we should not, and the earlier better, form a district under the Wright bill? If so, let the directors call a meeting everybody can be heard and everything explained. Yours,
A. Z.

We give the experience of one small grower of raspberries in town, W. Wweaver. A year ago last spring he bought 200 raspberry roots and planted them in eight-foot rows, two feet apart. The plants started and made a rapid growth. They blossomed and bore fruit. He irrigated the bushes and they blossomed again and bore a second crop of fruit before the end of the summer. Last winter Mr. Weaver cut back the old wood (which bears no fruit), and the new shoot made a rapid growth this spring and are now hanging full of berries of all sizes. He picks every other day, and from those 200 bushes averages 10 to 15 quarts of berries, which he is selling at the low price of 10 cents a quart. Supposing the "season" to last only one month, he will have picked over 150 quarts of berries from those bushes, and if he irrigates them at the proper time, a second crop will be borne of, say, 100 quarts, which will bring him $25 altogether. The demand for the berries in such people comes to his house every day for them, and if he had 15 bushals, instead of 15 quarts, he would find no trouble in selling them to eager customers. Now suppose the raspberry bushes should be planted 3 feet apart, in rows 6 feet apart, which would give plenty of room for plowing and cultivating, over 2,400 bushans would be planted in one acre of land. These would bear two second years, at the low price of 10 cents per quart, $200 to $300 worth of berries. Is there anything else a farmer can grow in this favored land that will bring him quicker or larger returns for the capital and labor invested.

ACTION OF SCHOOL MONEYS: About the Wright Hill
From our Regular Correspondent.
ON GAZETTE. The Trustees of Plain school district have made out their report to the County Superintendent of schools. It shows a balance on hand at signing of school year July 1, 1887, of received from county State fund 15. Paid teachers, $1,165; paid inlaws, repairs of pump, janitor, school insurance, $148,67; library books and supplies, $2,171,185; leaving place with County Treasurer of $208,17. California Central Railway Company located their road between Fullerton shield and it will be constructed at they have no trouble about right of it. It is understood that Messers Little and Goldthwaite, also Messrs. Melrose and Ripman will give right of way during a station is made at or near the edge of Placentia avenue. The railroad may have bound themselves in a contract with the Fullerton land avidicate not to make a station nearer than three and a mile under two years. Six months of time has now expired; six more will expire before the road is graded and ready to run. Then there would be but fear to run in the mean time if the city will put in a side track and give station for a year, and, if the business justifies it, give us a permanent bill. I think it could all be arranged.
Mr. Howard, a wealthy stock raiser old friend of Theo. Staley, from Carlsbad, Mo., called to see his old friend on way to Spokane Falls, W.T. He was disappointed in not finding Mr. Staley some number of our people were disapointed in not going on an excursion to San Antonio last Sunday. It was understood that would be an excursion, but no train glorious Fourth seems to be very illusory. Fourth seems to be very illusory.

The company was met at the depot, on arriving in Los Angeles, by Company C of the Eagle Corps, and escorted to Armory Hall, where they broke ranks and became acquainted with members of other companies. The boys were escorted to the depot, for their return home, by the regiment. Colonial Russell was especially proud of the youngest company, as was also Brigadier-General Boyce. The boys were given an enthusiastic send-off, and all feel well satisfied with their trip. Many stayed in Los Angeles last night, expecting to return this morning.
NOME Advertising Talk.
The Gazette appears this morning with over two columns of new advertisements, and not a good day for ads either. People have found that the Gazette is the best advertising medium and that advertising in our column pays. However, there are many estimable people living here who never give the subject a thought. A local paper should be liberally supported. It goes abroad advertising the town and brings interest to bear upon its immediate locality. A good local paper is worth money to any plague, no matter how dull times may be. It should therefore be patronized and not allowed to subsist on balmy atmospheres alone. Everybody will now have a chance to hand ad to the Gazette solicitor.
At the Landing.
Mrs. Dr. Gardiner and family have taken up their summer abode at the Landing.
Miss Kate Olden is sojourning at the Landing, the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Otto des Granges.

Anaheim Lodge, No. 85, A. O. U.W., has entered upon a series of interesting meetings which promise to prove pleasant and profitable to its members. A literary feast is to be prepared for each meeting night by a committee, and it is hinted that there will not be lacking physical, as well as mental, meat and drink. It is hoped by the officers of the lodge that every member will be regular in his attendance, as in the language of the playbill, "no effort will be spared to entertain and amuse." The regular meeting of the lodge will be held to-morrow (Friday) night.
Edward Ponce and Modesto Remero were arrested on Monday by Constable Snythe and charged with theft. It was alleged the parties entered the premises of Mrs Flora Hassen, near Chino ranch, and took two rings, valued at $120, and a purse containing a small amount of money. At the trial before Judge Fox on Tuesday evening Remero was discharged and Ponce was found $15 for the theft of a straw hat belonging to Mrs Hassen, which disappeared at the same time as the other articles which the party were accused of taking. No proof was obtained as to the theft of the rings, but Ponce acknowledged taking the hat, which is valued at about fifteen cents. Ponce paid his fine.
Los Angeles Howell: No place in this section is making more solid or rigid programs at this moment than is old Anaheim. The town and the county around will not doubt Honeyell's Stomach Bitters; this which is not violent, but sufficiently tame and which does not gripe it when it first is selected, the person only needs it not expect permanent benefit cannot hope to escape the debilitation which leaves the organs as bad off than before. If, on other lines resorts to the Bitters, he can rely on restoration of a regular habit of food quiet upon a renewal of a healthful intestinal canal. Besides health laxing the bowels, the Bitters are malt liver, impartas a beneficial immeixture of the kidneys, and soon the early twings of rheumatism are to go out to malaria in all its forms.
