MIND IN CHILDHOOD.
A MYSTERY WHICH IS BEYOND ORDINARY PHILOSOPHY.
Leading Childish Characteristics—Sensitiveness to Impressions—A Period of Great Mental Activity—Father and Mother—Astonishing Questions.
The late Bronson Alcott had many unwholesome ideas that made him offensively errant, but his reverence for children did a great deal to redeem his character in slapping the character of his daughter to whom he imparted it. Her best work—and her best is probably the best of its kind—is the result of reverent study of child character. The subject demands reverence, for it is a true saying of the Romans that the greatest reverence is the duty of children. The mind in childhood is a riddle—a mystery beyond all our philosophy. We can no more tell when or where it begins than when or where it will end. The newborn, sentient being stars with wide open eyes on an unknown world. It is an utter stranger, in a strange country, among a multitude of strange things and strange people. It is wary enough that it begins to learn that its education begins; that the mind in it tries to develop when the first ray of light strikes its newly opened eyes. The development then is rapid. Every object around it, every word spoken, every gesture becomes a part of its education. The very tones of the voice high or low, gentile or harsh, make impressions on the childish mind that are more to be affaced.
Of all the childish characteristics the most impressive is wonder at everything: at the trees and flowers, at the clouds, the sky, the moon and the stars; and at the big creatures under them. Children support to be too young to reason, will spend hours in wondering at the enigmas of nature, in forming theories and attempting to account for things. They ask innumerable questions, or rather they will, if they are encouraged by right answers. A light answer will not satisfy a child, but it may and it nearly always does discourage further questions. Young children cannot understand language; they have no idea of humor or of desire meaning. Everything is trivial for them until they have learned that bag exists; and then they are very slow in learning that what seems to be unpleasant may be all the time we have on any subject. If any question they may ask on a subject which is of the deepest significance to them is treated as a communique and answered lightly or fluently, they drew back as from a blow.
The mind in childhood is so sensitive to lack of information or to reduce it. It demands sympathy as well as knowledge. There is no doubt that this characteristic leads to great mental activity and mother-astonishing questions.
Stewart and Vanderbilt.
Two Anecdotes Showing the Penumbra Turn of the Nested Millennium.
Many persons who marvel at the wonderful accumulation of money presumed by some of their fellow citizens do not reflect upon the fact that these accumulations are often due to close economy in expenditure. A reporter lately came across two extraordinary instances of economy on the part of two millionaires, the late Alexander T. Stewart and the late William H. Vanderbilt.
"I shaved Mr. Stewart," said a Fifth avenue hotel barber, "for fifteen years steadily, when he was a patron of the Metropolitan hotel barbershop. In all that time he never once thought of presenting a gratuity. He paid the same price that any other man would for a shave or a haircut, and that was the end of it. It was even more the custom then than now for regular patrons to tip their regular barbersmen in a while, and particularly on Christmas or New Year's. Therefore, Mr. Stewart's omission was all the more singular.
One afternoon, nine years ago, Mr. Stewart dropped into the hotel barbershop and while he was in the chair a severe snow storm came up. I advised him, as he had been quite ill for some time, that he would be advisable for him to take a coupe home. I went out to the tea and asked a calman what was the lowest price for taking Mr. Stewart rooms. They all knew that there was no need asking a fancy price from him, and so I was told that I could get a coupe for him for $150. I went back and reported: "Too much too much" he said sharply. "I can't afford fairly such price. I will raise home in a place first, and that will only be ten cents, and so she did."
This article about Mr. Vanderbilt's care of money come from a porter of the Manhattan Beach hotel: "The summer before last," he said, "I was called to the office one afternoon and told by the clerk that Mr. William H. Vanderbilt was in the house; and that he had made his traveling bag. I was told to find it if possible. I started out full of dreams of sudden wealth. I went rail to Bay Ridge paying my own fare; and found that the bag was not there. Then I paid all their fare to New York, and searched all alike the trading at the battery. The bag was not to be found.
Then I paid another fare and went down to the island, and seethed over into the Oriental hotel, and there I found the bag. It had been taken to that land by mistake. I brushed my teeth, shoved it off the bag and carried it to Mr. William H. Vanderbilt's room, knocked gently and was held in it, and presented the bag with great fathom, and expected, of course that I should at host, get a $19 bill, as I was out until 4:25 to $1.00 and several hours of waiting (He said quickly). Thanks pleased I got it," and opening the bag felt that the contents were all right, revealed that there was only a single share in it. Then he stepped the bag shut, dived into his pocket and fished out a quarter.

Mobilization of the German Army
It is in the arrangements for mobilization that the German army is wonderfully perplexed. The insurgent is as follows: its entire array is divided into eighteen warriors each occupying a particular district and consisting of about 25,000 men. The general commanding the corps is responsible for its mobilization, and has in the hands of the clothing, arms, and equipment of the reserves and baldwear men. The detail however, are in the hands of the railroad authorities and the police bureau. Each soldier on patrolling the active army reports himself to the bureau of his district, where his name, age, regiment and destination on mobilization are inscribed. From this data the police bureau furnishes the local railroad authorities with the number of trains required and their direction.
Suppress now, the telegram for mobilization should be received. Each man thereon presents himself at once at the police station and receives his pass for the journey, goes to the railroad station and is sent off immediately to the headquarters of his regiment. Arrived therearms and clothing are served out, the officers appear, take command of their companies and regiments and in twenty four hours an army of 200,000 men arrived to 1,000,000, and in three days can be placed on the frontier with all its parts complete save of reserve, the mounted arms which require three more days to be made ready at account of the necessity of requisition. The Kalser's Mysterious Philosopher
There is curved among the peasants of Luserna a belief that the long life of Kalser Wiedelin was due to a mysterious philosopher of which he imperial majesty alone possessed that secret. How the emperor obtained the mage beverage is not known. It was said to be a kind of spirit which, if it did not give him immortality, would enable him to live more and supply him with power to retain armor in his that they make a need liquid thenakirk, strange to the head by several died to it, but for allied him which was the real present conflict between Russia and New York Tribune.

Great Loss of Forensic
In a paper recently read before one of the English associations of engineers, the writer asserted that, according to present methods of dealing with the motive power of the steam engine, only some 20 per cent. was made available, 80 per cent. of the energy developed in the furnace being thrown away, and it is quite common to realize no greater efficiency than about 4 per cent. on the gross or potential energy of the fuel. In large factories, that amit of the power being concentrated in one or two great machines, condensation can be taken advantage of, and, with water heaters, and other appliances, double the above figures realized—but in the very best engines, with all the latest improvements and elaborations, not more than 12½ per cent. has ever been realized, nor is it possible to realize more, and even this 12½ per cent. can only be obtained by the finest of wire drawing and the best of coal—New York Tribune.
Women in Spiritual Darkness.
It is calculated that there are in Asia and adjacent islands about 300,000,000 of Buddhist women. None of these have any hope of immortality, unless in one of the many transmigrations all human beings have to undergo after death, their spirit may chance to enter a bag infant, in which case they will in the course of time become incorporated, or rather etherealized, with Gandana, the greatest good for all. There is, however, but a slender hope of this coming to pass, so they have to make the best of their human life in this world. The women of Burma are in consequence more ready to become converts to Christianity than the men are; for as Christians they are made equal with men as regards accessibility to heaven, and have not to wait for ages for purity of soul to be obtained by frequent transmigrations—San Francisco Chronicle.
A Desperate Case.

The Heavy Method.
Soldiers in the Russian army are said to be carried of intemperance by a curious and heroic method. The materials is loaded up, and given only food boiled in his favorite wretched spirit and water. His soon becomes horribly sick, but is kept on this diet until the war or count of spirit crumbs in him nexting usable joothing for them.
