EVENTS OF THE WEEK. New Line to Los Angeles. Almost Completed Meeting at Orange Growers Chapter of Accidents Law's Tramgreens Odd Follows Garden Party Track will be completed between Anaheim and Los Angeles by to morrow, at which time it is expected the bridge across New river will also be finished. Through trains will be running between Los Angeles and San Diego in about a week. The Southern Pacific road to Tustin has reached a point near McPheron. Large consignments of material are constantly going over the route, which will probably be completed to Tustin in the course of a week. A construction train has been unloading steel rails on the route between Anaheim and Los Angeles for some time past. The old iron track will be taken up and replaced with stegl. This is done to facilitate the constantly increasing business on the line. With both the Central and S. Pines from Anaheim to Los Angeles, passengers will have comfort which never existed before. A material reduction in rates, it is said, will soon go into effect. ORANGE GROWERS Inspection Committee Visits Several Orchards Eveny on Orange Culture. The regular meeting of the Anaheim orange growers was held on Saturday at Kroger's Hall, and not only, was there a large attendance but much intelligent interest was evinced in the proceedings. After the routine business had been treated, Mr. Ryan, of the Inspection Committee, read the result of a day's tour of inspection among the orange groves of this vicinity. He further stated that the fear previously expressed that the owners of groves infected with scale would in some instances need to be legally coerced into adopting measures to get rid of the pests, was erroneous, as every orange grower which the committee visited heartily endorsed the objects of the association and promised cooperation and assistance in every measure which the association chose to adopt for the extinction of the angle. W. M. Mel alden read an essay which he had been required to prepare, and its reading tree and get out all suckers, dead or broken branches and any superfusions brush or wood and if these directions are followed you will have a healthy and profitable orchard that will produce you good fruit for which you will receive good prices, but if you have your trees to take care of them unless you will have poor fruit, sickly, dismused trees and no profit. Nothing is so attractive as a fine, healthy orange orchard, and the labor required to keep it so is a small thing compared with the extra profit. In giving these, my hastily expressed views I know that many successful growers of citrus fruits will differ, but the inter-changing of ideas may lead to the best methods. SHOT IN THE NEck. Tom Conley Has a Close Call—Other Cases. Red James Clark, Tom Hedermen and Tom Conley were carousing at Fullerton on Saturday morning last, when Peter Vonnge attempted to quiet the wagle. The trie jumped Vonnige, who retreated from the saloon in which the fraces occurred. Drawing a small revolver Vonnige fired at his assailants, the ball entering the neck of Conley and lodging in the right shoulder, producing a serious but not fatal wound. The wounded man was brought into town, but the shooter did not put in an appearance until evening and surrendered himself to the authorities. His case was heard by Judge Fox on Monday, and it appearing that the shooting was done in self-defense. Vonnige was discharged. Reddy Clark and Mr. Hedermon were tried on Saturday on the charge of disturbing the peace. While complaints were being drawn up Mr. Clark rendered the operatic selection "Pat Brannigan's Bullpup" for the edification of the Court and spectators. Various acrobatic feats were also performed, the spectators being kept in good humor by Mr. Clark's antics. The gentleman averred that he had not spent the glorious Fourth in freedom for eleven years, and begged the Court to fix his sentence so that he might have the pleasure of celebrating the Fourth in the open air. Mr. Hederman dozed off the effects of his booze. When asked his name he straightened up and with a tell-me-membs am I going look replied "My name is Tom." Mr. Clark braced up and spilled his friend's name for the edification of the court. "You spell twenty-five days in jail," Mr. Clark answered said the court. Mr. Clark immediately returned to his comatose state. Mr. Hedermon's case was dismissed and Red James Clark went up for twenty-five days. Fred Johnson was run on Tuesday for disturbing the peace. Fred became tired and hunted a convenient haystack for a nap. Constable Smythe collared the sleeper and conveyed him before Judge Fox. Six dollars. NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS Happenings of the Week. [REGULAR CORRESPONDENCE OF THE GARDEN] FULLERTON FRAGMENTS The Proposed Lime to Richmond Camp at the Landing. From our Regular Correspondence EDITOR GAZETTE—On the day following the excursion to San Juan, a lady's satchel was found in one of the carriages requested to say that the owner could gain the same by applying to Doctor and proving property. We shall soon have the telegraph in the poles being already placed in position. This will then give us other means of communication with the rest of the world sides the telephone, which was most week ago into Howell & Ford's store from the real estate office of Durango. Derkson, the proprietor of the restroom, attempted suicide last Monday ing. I did not learn the reason. Dr. was not here at the time and the nurse man is being attended by Dr. B of your town. Last Tuesday morning the railroad veyors ran a line over the proposed road in California Central from this plaza Richfield. I hear that only a mile and half of track is at present lacking to finish line to Los Angeles, so we shall have re-training in very short order. J. Caldwell of Westminster has finished well he was boring for Captain Chee pronounced it an excellent well he little over eighty feet in depth with forty feet of water in it, a bed of bearing gravel was pierced from eighth twenty feet in depth. The Captain is congratulated, not that a good well is vicinity is an exception, but this is an good one. W. B. Wilshire was in town Tuesday Wednesday, looking after the interest firm he represents so ably. I hear that our fine hotel will very shortly be opened with Mr. and Mrs. Leading again and hotness whose reputation is keeping is second to none. The Golden Belt canary-has been tarded greatly in opening up by the new rival of necessary material from San Diego. A much larger pump than the one is at present at the town water works will put in at once, the demand for water equaling the supply. One great thing in favor of our company over almost any part of State is that ranchers have no might irrigation, and water is stored from sunshine until morning in the extensive reservoirs... W. M. McLinden read an essay which he had been requested to prepare, and its reading was followed by an interesting discussion in which many valuable ideas were advanced. It is safe to say that no orange grower who attends one of these meetings will ever be taken from his office from any occasion; no matter how thoroughly he may be "up in horticulture," he will look some valuable points in listening to the experiences of new gardeners. Mr. McLinden's essay was as follows: At your request I have written a few thoughts on orange culture. I do not claim that my method is the best, but I do not know but what it is the best. Judge that the successful cultivation of the orchard tree changes with soil, health and other conditions. I will not enter into the preparation of the fruit and the planting of an orchard, as that subject is one of sufficient importance to form an easy approach to successfully cultivate, fertilize and prune an orchard that has been planted, and to keep the ground in the best condition and have the trees make the most vigorous and healthy growth and produce the most valuable crop, are the subjects which I shall endeavor to treat in this essay. Every orchard here should be plowed from ten to inches deep at least twice a year and kept at well and deeply cultivated; the balance of this time the fibrous fruit coords have a tendency to come to the surface if there is moisture, unless the ground is kept stirred; in such case they will stay deeper and be less liable to be injured by the plow or cultivator. Orchards should be irrigated as often as needed, from two to four or five times a year better before they require it then after they show signs of drought. When the fruit is checked in its growth with lack of moisture it rarely does ever make a good orange. The best way to tell when an orchard needs to be irrigated is to examine the moisture in the ground and not wait till the tree shows it. If the moisture is not pretty close to the surface—say within four or five inches—would advise irrigation, and in the summer when the days are long and warm the evaporation is very great. I would cultivate or plow just as soon as the soil is in completion and would follow up the plow with a fertilizer closely with a harrow and have the ground thoroughly pulverized, thus retaining the moisture for a longer time. I find it a good plan to launch the area with straw or wood manure; it serves and holds soil moisture and fertility too. At land on the farm site the foot-billows contain too much organic matter to properly nourish an orange tree and need all the elements of food that it needs. Time on a barkfruit of wood shaves to each tree is about the best thing that can be put around the trees to organize a organic matter and don't be satisfied with the fertility of your soil save and make all the fertilizers you can and when ever you have a day or two to spare it to your orange trees. As to pruning there are so many different opinions as to low pruning, high priming and no pruning. I may misjudge some on. I have the stalk or root of the tree should be protected from sun until the top forms umbrella enough to shelter the stake. I am littlefield has put up a new California mittee, read the result of a day's tour of inspection among the orange groves of this vicinity. A shovel time is about the best thing that can be put around the trees to organize with the fertility of your soil to save and make all the fertilizers you need, and when ever you have a day or two to spare him it to your orange trees. As to pruning there are so many different opinions as to low pruning, high pruning and no pruning, that I fear to express an opinion best. I may mislead some on. I believe the stalk or leaf of the tree should be protected from the sun until the top forms umbrella enough to shelter the stalk. I would raise the branches just as fast as I dared to do so until I got the tree shaped. This will be done at the expense of fruit the first few years, as most fruit on young trees grows on lower branches, but young trees of some varieties are apt to overheat and stunt the tree. The advantages of tomining up is that you can cultivate closer to the tree and get under to thin out dead or superfluous branches, that the air may circulate inside of tree. I can recall in my memory an orchard that I visited several years ago. The owner was a very intelligent gentleman who took great pride in the successful management of what he believed he had—the best grove in Southern California. The trees made a fine growth, the lower branches were resting on the ground he hoed around under the tree in a circle of about twelve feet in diameter, then raked it down with a hand rake. I suggested to him that he would save work and have a finer orchard if he were to prune up. He counted at the idea. I again visited the same grove several years later and I found more than half of the trees dead, the balance all pruned up high. I asked why such a change, and was informed that the trees grew so dense that no air light could penetrate the branches and they became breeding places for all destructive insects that began to sap the life from the trees. The inside soon filled up with dead worm and a general decay set in. The first few years he reaped golden harvests not only in the luscious fruit he gathered but in the coin of the realm that he received for it, and what ought to be now a full bearing, healthy orchid is now a dead forest—a result arising principally from low or no pruning till too late. All suckers and broken branches, dead leaves, bird's nests, etc. should be removed from the trees at least twice a year. No tree pays so well with intelligent industry well directed as an orange tree and none so profitless with a little neglect. To resuscitate; Plow at least twice a year and cultivate with a chisel-tooth cultivator every three weeks during the summer as deep as possible. Irrigate as often as the ground gets dry and cultivate as soon as needed quickly and follow closely with a harrow. Fertilize at least once in two years. Save all your ashes to put around the trees and use some lime if you can get it. Prune up so as to be able to cultivate close to the table one in the history of California and one whose reputation for hospitality will impress that of the memorable gathering in 1859, when the Sovereign Grand Lodge met in San Francisco. The Past Grand Master degree was conferred upon eight members of the two lodges entitled to it. Afterward the entire party adjourned to the Anahaim Hotel where one of Fred Eichler's excellent suppers awaited them. Considerable time was spent in the discussion of the viands, in toast making, short speeches and story telling, and it was considerably after midnight before the party broke up. The Everhardy Garden Party In the social annals of Anaheim there has never been a more enjoyable gathering than that which assembled as the elegant residence of Mr. Everhardy on Thursday evening last. Numberless Japanese lanterns had been hung through the spacious grounds and upon the pazas of the house. Their softly colored tints blending with the clear full moonlight presented the appearance to one approaching as of a brilliantly lit stage setting. The evening was as perfect as only a California evening can be, pleasanter out of doors within; and the guests, after a warm welcome by the host and hostess and their fair daughter Miss Ida, proceeded to enjoy themselves with all heartiness. Below the trees, whose branches glittered with radiating lines of lanterns, stood a long table. It was crowded to overflowing with various conestibles, flowers in beautiful bouquets and, well, everything down to pickles and olives. At the proper time everyone sat down to the beautiful collation and with appetites sharpened by the unnual scene and by the soft evening air did full justice to the work before them. Impromptu toasts were offered and responded to and considerable time was spent in this happy fashion. Afterwards with music and games the evening sped only too quickly, and "time to go home" was sounded before anyone seemed aware of the lateness of the hour. With hearty good-byes the party dispersed. One evening last week a couple of men went to the house of Mrs. Nickerson about 9 o'clock and tried to force an entrance. As her husband is absent in the northern part of the State, she was alone with her baby and little girl, but she not being very easily frightened and feeling that she was able to defend herself, peremptorally ordered them to vacate the premises, which order they very wisely and promptly obeyed. She feels very sure she recognized one of them through the window by the light of the moon; as they entered Broadway they were recognized. It is to be hoped if those young men make another such an attempt where a lady is aloof that some doctor will receive a job the next day, day to pick shot out of them. PERSONAL MENTION. J. R. Planting and Pruning the Orange From Mr. Lelong's treatise on citrus culture, to which reference was made last week, we take the following on planting and pruning of orange trees. It is a common practice among growers to place the tree in the hole, fill it up with soil, and then tramp it. As the roots are covered with thick mud they will stick together, and if the tree grows it will not do as well as when the roots are extended with care. This is very simple. The hole is half-filled with thick shadows as to form a mound in the center of the mound and on being withdrawn the dirt and keeps the root in place. Soon after have been watered, and as soon as the water in the basin has disappeared, the basin is covered with leeSoil; this will protect the tree from getting dry, and also from leaning over. Trees planted with these presentations make the best growth and become thrifless. When trees have been allowed to grow at will for several years before they are pruned, most of the inside brush will be found to be dead, and to remove it requires considerable work and skill, for if in removing a branch a hole is made that will allow the hot sand to enter, it will search the bank; the fine brush will also die, and disposed trees are sure to be the result. I have often read articles wherein the written advice "that the trees be open so as to allow plenty of air and sun heat to enter." This advice comes from men having no practical knowledge man who are yesterday looking after the interests of the California Central Railroad. The depot here will soon be commenced. A. H.
