THE CURIOUSITY SHOP. Political, scientific and general information on Madison Square. The word nerve is from the Latin ager, Greek agnus, fish. The Greek actor means both field and a measure of land. Most nations have some hummer nearly corresponding, such as what one player could play in a day. The English albatross consists of 4,640 square yards. The clutch with which hand is mounted in twenty-two yards long and a square chain will contain twenty-two by twenty-two or fifty yards, so that ten square chains make an arc. The Newchurch acre is larger than the English, and the Irish is larger than the British. The following table shows the value of other hundred compared with the English acre: | Word | Value | | :--- | :--- | | Kingfish | 1 | | Scotch | 1.27 | | Irish | 1.58 | | Austrian, Irish | 1.43 | | Belgian, bertare | 2.47 | | Denmark, bortare | 2.59 | | France (hartare, 100 acres) | 2.47 | | Hamburg, margarit | 2.88 | | Hanover | 6.51 | | Holland | 2.10 | | Napkin, margarit | 8.80 | | Poland, margarit | 1.58 | | Portugal, margarit | 1.43 | | Prussia (hartare, margarit) | 1.67 | | Russia, dittana | 2.70 | | Cardinale, glorale | 5.51 | | Hancy, margarit | 1.86 | | Spain, fangrade | 1.06 | | Sweden, turretland | 1.18 | Switzerland, iux | 1.62 | Denver, arpent | 1.27 | Turnery, secunda | 1.22 | United States, acre | 1 | Würtenberg, margarit | 2.40 | Homan, jugernan, ancient | 6.66 | Greek plethron, ancient | 23 | The German morgen is becoming obsolete, as Germany has adopted the French metrical system. Cletura. The word is French, and means the putting an end to debate and proceeding to a vote upon a question before a deliberative body. The common use of the word in English politics arises in this way: In the autumn of 1892 Mr. Gladstone brought forward a proposition to amend the rules of procedure, so that "when it shall appear to Mr. Speaker, or to the chairman of ways and means in a committee of the whole house, during any debate, that the subject has been adequately discussed, and that it is the evident sense of the house, or of the committee, that the question be now put, he may inform the house or committees." On such information a motion may be made that the question be now put, and if this in the whole house is supported by more than 220 members, or in case of only forty in opposition, it is supported by over 100 members, that ends the debate and the question is carried. The rule was approved, and several other somewhat stringent rules were adopted at the same time. Mr. Gleden. ALL AROUND THE HOUSE. A few Parts of Interpret Regarding Window Gardens. Window gardens are growing more time ever in favor with flower lovers who have no space and little time to devote to a flower garden. Beside they add greatly to the attractiveness of a house, and age being appropriate and utilised as an inspirative and convenient method of decoration. The prime requisition for a window garden are good drainage for the box a suitable soil and plenty of vines. The box may be of wood, plain or ornamental, or of wire lined with mesh. The soil should be such as used in potting plants. Of suitable vines there is such a multitude that one can hardly go alone in selecting them. For the center plants of the box may favorite that will thrive in the open border will do well. Of all ways in which to indulge a taste for flowers the window garden is the easiest. The Best Way to Freshen Salt Fish. Salid fish is a wholesome food, much used by country folk during the hot summer months. An objection to it arises from the length of time required to freshen, so it will be palatable and not create thirst. A country house wife says that making over night in your milk is the nicest way to freshen milk; markerd and salted halibut. Lay the skin down, and put in enough of the sour milk to entirely cover the fish. When mud thoroughly in cold water till the water is clear, then boil a trifle. Too much boiling makes the fish hard. Turn off the water and cook in cream or butter, or broil on the grid iron. Salt pork also is much better freshened overnight in sour milk. Dainty Summer Curtaina. Dainty curtains for summer rooms are made of deep cream colored chose cloth with cross stripes of dull pink and golden olive silk faced velvet set between antique insertion or applied over the cheese cloth. A balance for the top of the curtains is composed of two bands of velvet with cheese cloth showing between. At the lower edge a deep fringe of balls or tamels of crewel and silk may be used as a finish. Along the inner edge and bottom is wriggling of antique lace. Napkins and Dollies. Very pretty fruit napkins are made of fine white linen; make each one half a yard square. Fringe out the four edges an inch and a half deep and whip the fringe to prevent its fraying. Dorcas contributes the cut in which may be seen illustrations of both fruit napkins and finger doilies, and gives the following directions for decorating and finishing the same. Mr. Gladstone brought forward a proposition to amend the rules of procedure, so that "when it shall appear to Mr. Speaker or, to the chairman of ways and means in a committee of the whole house, during any debate, that the subject has been adequately discussed, and that it is the evident sense of the house, or of the committee, that the question be now put, he may so inform the house or committees." On such information a motion may be made that the question be now put, and if this in the whole house is supported by more than 220 members, or in case of only forty in opposition, it is supported by over 100 members, that ends the debate and the question is carried. The rule was approved, and several other somewhat stringent rules were adopted at the same time, Mr. Gladstone urging them upon the plea of necessity, to avoid the delay of public business by a factions minority. It is the first of these rules that became known by the name of cloture. The Distance of Planets. The following table gives the distance from the sun of the planets: | Miles | Mercury | Venus | Earth | Mars | Asteroids | Jupiter | Saturn | Uranus | Neptune | | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | | 36,000,000 | 68,000,000 | 91,000,000 | 143,000,000 | 250,000,000 | 404,000,000 | 506,000,000 | 1,922,000,000 | 2,853,000,000 | It will be seen that the furthest planet from the sun is Neptune, and the nearest Mercury. The one is invisible to the naked eye from its remoteness; the other from its contiguity. The largest is Jupiter, the smallest, Mercury, whose diameter is but a fourth larger than the moon, while the diameter of Jupiter measures 92,000 miles, the earth's being 8,000. These having satellites are Jupiter; 4; Saturn; 8; Uranus; 4; Neptune. Venus and the earth are very near alike in size. Mars is smaller, having a diameter of about one-half of either of the other two, or one-sixth their bulk. What is a Sonnet? A sonnet is a poem of fourteen lines. It has been claimed that the limit to this number was originally because the sonnet was a song and sung to the accompaniment of the lyrics, which had fourteen strings. It is more probable that this limitation was accidental, or an arbitrary rule which has been supervised by custom. The "legitimate" sonnet is a poem of fourteen ten syllables (if with double rhymes, eleven syllables), lamble penameter lines, of which the first, fourth, fifth and eighth rhyme together; the second, third, sixth and seventh rhyme together; the ninth, eleventh and thirteenth rhyme together, and the tenth, twelfth and fourteenth rhyme together; so that there are two rhymes in the first sight lines—the octave; and two rhymes in the last six lines—the sextet. Some critics consider if there are three rhymes in the sethet the sonnet is still legitimate. The "legitimate" sonnet was invented about 1250 by Pra Guittone d'Arezo. French Chamber of Deputies. The sittings occupied by deputies in France indicate their politics, and one can grade the conservation or radicalism of a member by his seat. On the right of the president of the chamber sit the Anti-Republicans, composed of the Bonapartists and the Legitimists; they compose the Right, and the Extreme Right is composed of the radical Bonapartists and Legitimists. The center is occupied by the Molerates; according as a deputy sits just to the right or the left of the central aisle does belong to the Right or the Left Center. To the left of the president are the Republicans, the radicals being seated at the extreme left. Comin't Thro' the Rye. It is disputed whether the poet Burns meant that Jennie was kissed when coming through the tall growing rye grain or through the little stream of that name on the northwest of Ayrsrshire. The latter of these two suppositions seems absurd. At any rate there is nothing especially captivating in the idea of a girl being kissed when wading a stream, but whether it is in the picture called up or in long association, we do see something very intriguing in a young girl advancing through a field of waving grain and treated in the same fashion by her lover. A New York correspondent of an out of town paper makes the startling statement that there are 800,000 adults in the city who are not members of any church. ALL AROUND THE HOUSE. Furniture, Artistle and Practical-Information in Culinary Matters. A novelty in furniture, combining the Constant sweeping is what wears out carpets. A carpet often looks dusty so soon after it has been swept that you now do not really need sweeping again. In that case, wet a cloth or sponge and wipe off the dust. A few drops of ammonia in the water will brighten the colors. Household Helps. Egg stains on silver can be taken off with table salt and a wet rag. Finger marks may be removed from varnished furniture by the use of a little sweet oil upon a soft cloth. To clean nickel on stoves, wet soda with ammonia, apply with an old tooth brush and rinse off with a wooden cloth. Tea bristle stains will come out at once if they are taken immediately and held over a pail while boiling water is poured upon them. To avoid having fat left in soups, it is safer to allow them to get entirely cold, when the fat can be easily skinned off. Just enough can be heated each time the soup is served. When using stale bread for packings or tuffing, always cook it in a cold liquid breed that has been soaked in cold milk or water in light and crumbly, whereas that oaked in hot liquids is heavy. Blue Lawn. The name Blue laws was originally applied to the code drawn up in 1650 for Connecticut. It was given them in derision of their strictness. The word blue was also applied, apart from its now, to Probyterianism, which because of the blue mantle spread over the prowishing tub scene of the ministers mind. The Devil Fish described by Hugo is not a more dangerous monster than alaria, whether it takes the form of shills of fever, bilious remission, agee or amb agri. Like the octopus of the story change the victim in its tentacles, and its him close and closer in a horrible manner.
