The Oceanside Track Layers Coming.
Exported to Arrive Here Next Week. Right of Way Dispatch to Be Muttled, and Men Put to Work.
Railroad matters, which have been at a standstill hereabout for a few weeks, so far as the Atchison road is concerned, bid fair to assume definite shape inside of a week. As the company's force of track-layers at Oceanside were briefly engaged at that point, preparatory to coming here, no attention was given to right-of-way matters hereout, which lately have threatened a suspension of work on the line. However, as the Oceanside workmen approach the end of their labors there, and are about pulling stakes for the Atchison road at Anheim, matters are now being put in shape to ensure a speedy commencement of track-laying so soon as the laborers arrive.
Richard Egan, the company's right-of-way man, is expected here next week, and will undoubtedly arrange the right-of-way affair at Orange, which is the sole means of delaying a speedy consumption of work at the present time. Mr. Egan comes, it is said, armed with everything looking to a thorough rectification of the matter. It is the desire of the company to have rails at Orange and engage a large force of track-layers at that point, who will work on the track until they meet the gang of track-layers working from Los Angeles, and who are now laboring at the Laguna ranch. Track has been laid to the Los Angeles river, and piles are being driven for the bridge over the stream. Meantime track-laying continues on the south side of the river and is being pushed with vigor. Now that the Oceanside gang is to be at Anheim inside of a week, a vigorous taking hold of all rights of way annoyances will be the result, and doubtless next week we shall be able to make the announcement definitively.
The representatives of the Atchison company to be here next week are the people to set the track-layers at work here, and if it is not done then the completion of the road will be delayed perhaps indefinitely. Everything is in readiness to land rails at the district from which the Emperor is suffering completely halted the most persistent German professors some years before Sir Morrell had taken to give his presentation, and without much in until the inflection of the layman had made such adrenalism that a course was almost impossible. Dr. Macdonis promised against the dangerous operation of laryngomyne, under which the Emperor would understandly have must, and there can be no doubt that the treatment advocated by Sir Morrell has been the moons of prolonging this valuable life. Dr. Macdonis saw from the moment he undertook the case that it was incurable, and his sole object has been to keep his illustrations patient alive as long as possible."
THE LOVELY PONG QUO
Kidnapped in Los Angeles on Tuesday Tumble Time.
Fong Quan, the Celestial beauty who recently paid Amelia a visit to view again the scenes of her childhood, was kidnapped, while in Los Angeles last Saturday, by someone unknown. Fong Quan will be remembered by nearly everybody in Anheim, having gone to school here some years ago. She became an apt scholar and when she left Anheim was married to Tin Wo, who kept a laundry here at the time the object of his affections was yet in her school days. Tin was wont to regale the moon-eyed beauty with glances and gesture, and was tinkled half to death when on busy afternoons, the lovely main, his arm meanwhile "around her waist," would stand on the front porch of his wash house and hold the string which held captive Tin's singing kite high in air. Tonbade good bye to Anheim, but not to Tin, for he soon after followed her and secured her parent's consent, by the aid of divers dollars, to their marriage, which was celebrated with all becoming pomp. Fon returned to Anheim some weeks ago, be-touched in frills and bonnies, malakin gloves, etc. On the little finger of her tiny yellow hand—the glove removed and carried meanwhile in her other tiary yellow hand—sparkled a diamond ring of parent ray serene, which unfortunately was lost to her in some unexplained way while she was visiting here.
Fon was spirited away by some bad Celestial and Tin's heart was filled with Wo. The latter suspects his wife is detained in a Chinese laundry in Los Angeles. He is watching the place, and unless Fun he spedily forthcoming he threatens to convert the laundry into gora. Tin is considered a very well-to-do man. At present he is not engaged in any business. The other Chinese both men and women, speak well of him and say that he was very affectionate to his wife and worshiped her, and that she in return idealized her husband. There seemed to be a bitter feeling in Chinatown between NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

PULLERTON FRAGMENTS
Graders at Work Again Winter Worth Growning.
From our Register Correspondent.
Editor Gazette—It is with great satisfaction that one of the right of way for the railroad being settled at Boona Park and that the graders are now working on the Coyote House.
Everything connected with the water works is now complete, with the exception of the engine; when that is put in and running customers will be able to obtain water for domestic use. The windmill and tar at the hotel is supplying water at present.
C. C. Carpenter was in town late Saturday.
Mr. Walter Blanchard of Boston stops over night, one evening last week, with Means, Amelia Brown.
I hope when the school grounds are laid out and planted with trees and shrubbery that they will be kept in proper order. Amelia's public school grounds are worthy of imitation, with their beautiful shady tree and neatly clipped express hedges.
Asking one or two gentlemen when they proposed building in town, their answer was: "Not until the cars are running." A present the extra hauling is quite a drawback.
If you want to grow orange don’t forget to prune your trees. Keep up our reputation for fine fruit. Tin orange is probably a tree that shows the greatest return for liberal maintenance and good cultivation.
The gas house is now finished; the man chineses here and will soon be placed in position.
How is it? Why is it? We have no blacksmith yet. A building was specially designed for her.
What she is the matter?
Let me draw the attention of the Telephone company to the fact that by coming east on Commonwealth avenue as far as the office here, and then running south to Anheim, the distance to points south of here would be shortened over one mile. Also that for the last year this line has been scientifically grappled up by two pieces of board on the southwest corner of Win Smith’s ranch on Orangerthepea avenue.
Dr Phoeniger wants to see the Spardra road widened to 30 feet from the township line to the next half section north. All the property owners are said to be like “Barkie.” Let this be done before it is too late.
Meantime track laying continues on the south side of the river and is being pushed with vigor. Now that the Oceanade gang is to be at Anaheim inside a week, a vigorous taking hold of all rights of way annoyances will be the result, and doubtless next week we shall be able to make the announcement definitively.
The representatives of the Atchison company to be here next week are the people to set the track layers at work here, and if it is not done then the completion of the road will be delayed perhaps indefinitely. Everything is in readiness to land rails at the Orange junction sufficient for a large gang of track dryers, and knowing ones observe that right of way will be secured and everybody put at work immediately.
Affairs on the cutoff at Polhemus junction have been during the week pushed with the vigor characteristic of the Southern Pacific, in marked contrast to the dilly-dallying tactics of the other company. The roadbed is graded to the Santa Ana, and camps have been transferred across the river. Engineer Strabridge inspected the scene of operations last week, and it is understood that track laying will be commenced in about a week, and the entire road completed to Tustin in six weeks. With the completion of the road to Austin through trains will at once move on the new line, and Santa Ana will have its local spur to connect freight and passengers with the Southern Pacific.
Olinda graders are still at work near Carlton. The right of way matter through the Kraemer ranch is not as yet settled, but now that all other sections of the roadbed are completed, attention will be given to the route to be taken through the ranch. A condemnation suit is talked of, but whether a recourse will be taken to this measure it is of course difficult to determine. Mr. Records, President of the road, is in conference with Richard Gird, in reference to the widening of his line of road to a broad gauge to connect with the Anaheim and Olinda at the Chino ranch, running them to Pomona. Nothing has been heard of the result of the conference, but it is consistently expected that Mr. Girl will see the advisability of changing his narrow gauge into the standard width.
A party of gentlemen connected with the Anaheim and Olinda road suspected the route between town and the Landing on last Sunday. Surveyors will soon be at work on the line and the road pushed to the sea as soon as money and men may do it.
On Friday morning three car-leads of material were landed upon the site of the new depot of the Santa Fe Railroad Company at Orange, says the Tribune. The ground was staked, and a force of carpenters and builders under the directions of A. S. Howe of San Bernardino, contractor for the building of the depot, are busy framing the foundation and timbers for the structure. The building will be 130 feet long.
The Santa Ana and Tustin Motor Railway Company was organized at Santa Ana last week. Its objects are to build and conduct a motor road between the towns of Santa Ana and Tustin, a distance of six miles. The Directors are James McFadden, C.W. Olinda graders are still at work near Carlton. Almost Unimaginous Sentiment Against Organizing It
The election in the Anaheim water district last Friday in regard to its incorporation of the district under the Wright irrigation bill resulted in a vote almost unanimously against its measure. The objection based upon action of supervisors in excluding Yorba precinct from the bounds of the district, and including Carlton within same Both acts were contrary to its expressed desire of its irrigators in their proposed district, The Supervisors' action in law and spirit of the bill.In Anahaim 141 votes were cast against its measure,... one in favor of it... EOTOR GAZETTE — During the last week we have taken an overland trip to Los Angeles, passing through the prosperous town Of Whittier. This is first time we have seen there since it became a town; and we greatly surprised to see what a town and population has spring up in so short a time. We had great pleasure meeting there an old time Anahaimer, J.H.Gwin, who left Los Angeles county about 12 years ago for a better place but has returned after all these years, and is now running a successful livery business there.
We also took in our run with friends. We found everything outside, outside building exceedingly quiet. It is said not over one lot a week is changing hands. We were terribly annoyed by-the festive mosquito while there.
The citizens utter many complaints against them; but are unable to abate their nuisance.
On Sunday afternoon we attended wedding ceremony of a niece of Mrs.Madien,Miss Mable Bard Montague,a recent graduate of State Normal School,m married Mr.C.V.Miller,a prominent well-to-do young man Of Los Angeles.The bride was,the recipient OF numerous and costly presents.An elegant lunch was prepared at the residence_of-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening at-the residence_of-the evening

The Santa Ana and Tustin Motor Railway Company was organized at Santa Ana last week. Its objects are to build and conduct a motor road between the towns of Santa Ana and Tustin, a distance of six miles. The Directors are James McFadden, C.W. Humphreys, George W. Winter and James N. Smith of Santa Ana, and W.S. Bartlett of Tustin. Capital stock, $100,000.
Jalem's Jottings.
From the Anaheim correspondence in the Los Angeles Express of last evening we take the following paragraphs:
Some one with $10,000 or more spare capital would have a safe and paying investment in Anaheim, in building houses on the installment plan. We know personally six of our best young married citizens who would get residence built for themselves at once on this plan, to cost from $1,200 to $3,000, and they would pay good monthly instalments and good interest. Who will take hold of this?
Additional school facilities are much needed here. In the primary department there are 104 pupils enrolled under one teacher, about double the number that the teacher can well look after. Before next term opens we hope to see Anaheim and Fairview districts unite in building a fine new school-house in the western part of town, which will relieve the present crowded schools of both districts.
THE DYING EMPEROR.
Reported to Mr. Stinking Mapidly—Another Aborm.
London, May 9. That the German Emperor is slowly succumbing to his malady, now conceded to be fatal, is acknowledged in official utterances. The private secretary of Dr. Mackenzie in a letter to the editor of the Referee from Berlin says that the case is hopeless and has long been so. Mackenzie's efforts now are directed to prolong life as long as possible. Mackenzie's secretary says: "I notice that it is informed by the German surgeon, that since Sir Morell Mackenzie has attended the German Emperor the illustrative patient has been getting worse instead of better. Now I am perfectly aware, and I think no one knows it better, for I have been his private secretary for the last twelve years, that there exists in certain quarters a decided prejudice and lack of man whose life has been one brilliant success in his profession. It is well known that this material were landed upon the site of the new depot of the Santa Fe Railroad Company at Orange, says the Tribune. The ground was staked, and a force of carpenters and builders under the directions of A.S. Howo of San Bernardino, contractor for the building of the depot, are busy framing the foundation and timbers for the structure. The building will be 130 feet long.

There is really very little ingenuity making absolutely unadjusted for every day doing, and with this finish three counts to one in difficulty in entertaining; says one well in fashionable dinner giving. There is no chance than we’a host ill at once or due to interruptance of moving glances between her servants. A heat and humility innermostly not how many times he has in well appointed house a word; upon nothing for dinner but soap, hash and put them on the table in style; serve three carrots and one will imagine it as better dinner than if constantly served. Miss Cornish bakes bread in the following manner: After the bread or hard dough put into the bread press then turns it into original volume bread; bread and blast with moist butter; a little milk in which sugar is dissolved; then put them into a moderate oven to boil; the butter will make a crisp brown crust; temperature of the oven is about right while the hand can be held in it without burnt white count fifteen quickly.
For canning small fruits a good rule is to allow one pound of a pound of fruit; Put water to the mug proportion of about a teaspoonful of water to each pound of sugar; make into a stirrup skim carefully; Add the fruit; let it boil again; and it will be ready for cooking For pears, peaches, gages, etc., allow al- same quantity of sugar as for rapping pine plant will need a full half pound of sugar to a point of stalk. THE UNCERTAINTY OF APPEARANCES
Emmy Head at Buena Park Literary Society May 5th, by Frank Moore.
In casting about for a subject, a theme was suggested by a little incident trivial in itself but pointing to a moral. A man once went to a neighbor to buy a sheep. He looked over the band carefully, examined several, and asked the prices of many. At last one was selected, to all appearances as good as the beat, but for a dollar less than the owner wanted for his choice. Now, he was a judge of sheep and was somewhat surprised that such a distinction should be made. He asked if the sheep was healthy. Very healthy. Was it breach? No. Was it subject to rot? No. Well, he decided to buy it. About a year passed, when his neighbor was one day driving by, and inquired how he liked his sheep. Very well, only there is one objection. It has a black lamb. That is just the reason, replied his neighbor, that I sold it so low; it always has a black lamb. Whereupon the man concluded that we can't always go by appearances for the truth will finally assert itself.
The schoolboy, who whiles his time away hunting ducks along the creek, thinks there is plenty of time to get as much education as he needs, and appears to other boys just as happy and prosperous as many of them. But, as years go by and he comes to the necessity of making his mark on the lower corner of a mortgage, provided he has anything more than a gun and a dog to mortgage, he impresses the fact upon his associates that appearances will mislead but the truth asserts itself.
The fellow, who now and then uses a profane word by way of emphasis, and laughingly declares that he can stop swearing if he wants to, appears in society a perfect gentleman. He may occasionally indulge in slang where an anarch would not be permissible and is complimented for its appropriateness. For thirty years the seeds of vulgarity lie in his mind like the blots in his old book. Reveries in business may come; family ties may be severed, and the old man feels that growing cold about him. Can he then stop swearing if he wants to? If he can, it seems to everybody else that he don't want to; for he is a moral wreck, and the truth asserts itself. Again, we have the young gentleman who indulges in a highly flavored cigar. To use a quid of tobacco would be entirely beneath his dignity. Even the young lady, who can embody to his companionship, tells him the orlorous whites are agreeable. She marries him, and, when age has engraved many wrinkles upon her brow, she returns from a hard day's washing, by which means she supports the family, to find a dingy kitchen clouded with the most putrid tobacco smoke. Then will she tell us that a handful of judgment is worth a houseful of appearances. It is not my motive to convert this essay into a temperance lecture, but a very fervorable comparison could be drawn between sparkling wine in cut glass and a pitcher of beer in the kitchen; between a tipping young man of twenty and a set of seventy.
It is an old saying that idleness it the fundamental vice. We all know that the devil is at the elbow of the idler. Industry is the mainspring of prosperity. The youth, who regards himself fortunate in having little or no ability, puts one foot into the grave by failing to develop physical strength, while the other becomes riveted in the shackles of indolence. He may drive fast horses, enjoy social advantages, live in a fine home.
At the election in Los Angeles on Monday the proposed new charter for the city was defeated by 140 votes. Not much interest was taken in the result, and only 1,400 votes were cast.

E.A. White is about the happiest man in town, his joy being attributed to the arrival at his residence; on Tuesday evening last, of a bouncing girl with an avoirdupois ten pounds. Mr. White was kept busy yesterday receiving the congratulations of his friends, whose name is Legion. Mrs. White and the baby are doing splendidly.
A dispatch came over the wires on last Friday laden with the starting news that San Diego was in flames and would be totally destroyed. The Gazetters in a few minutes had an extra out on the streets. Subsequent telegrams were to effect that the fire was not so bad as reported, but about $200,000 worth of property had been destroyed. From San Diego papers it is learned that the city was at one time in some danger of being destroyed, but this was happily averted.

On Monday we arrived to learn on our return of little Jacob Edwardson, eight little boys of the Placentia Blockjaw. Much good would result from organization and should have been long ago. The orange culture in the county is a growing one. Our trees are thread-printable pasta. patural tobacco smoke. Then will she tells us that a handful of judgment is worth a houseful of appearances. It is not my motive to convert this essay into a temperance lecture, but a very forcible comparison could be drawn between sparkling wine in cut glass and a pitcher of beer in the kitchen; between a tipping young man of twenty and a sort of seventy.
It is an old saying that illeness it the fundamental vice. We all know that the devil is at the elbow of the idler. Industry is the mainspring of prosperity. The youth, who regards himself fortunate in having little to do, usually puts one foot into the grave by failing to develop physical strength, while the other becomes riveted in the shackles of indulence. He may drive fast horses, enjoy social advantages, live in a fine house, extend hospitality to his companions, but time is a great leveler of mankind, and sooner or later will ruthlessly drag him from his throne of ease and say "Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise."
Fashion is a fickle goddess and would often mislead us were to form our opinion of men, frequently high in social standing by the appearance of their clothes which a clever tailor has served about them. While common decency demands a comfortable dress and luxury permits a fine taste in the selection of fabrics, the man who depends upon his attire alone to maintain the favors of his class will eventually come to grief. Again, the man who refuses to recognize talent and industry in threadbare garments is shallow of intellect and weak in morals. The world at large is keen of vision, and is not dazled by the glitter of the diamond, neither is it blinded by a patch upon a wellworn coat. True worth will come to the front regardless of appearances, for the state and the nation are anxious to use real men.
Alis may sometimes gold the mask of a racer. How many a boy at the close of school says "perfect" when his conscience, if allowed to speak, would say "imperfect"? How many a horse-trader says "sound" when his conscience is almost crushed with the knowledge of blemish and disease? How many a lower robs his vocabulary of adjectives to express affection while his conscience is paying tribute to his ambition for social position and wealth? How many a husband leaves his home after supper to fulfill a business engagement and later, alarm his wife in his by resuming up some battens along a wire! How many a father talks his children to love their summons, and turns around to surrender vengeance on the neighbors' boys for snatching his watermelon!
In fact, lying in a sort of wankish need to cover up so much soft wool and importance that it has become a dimple drug in the affairs of man! Appearances may deserve for a whirl, but the truth will smirk itself. Our civilization is a credit to history, but still defective. Our habits and amenities should be index to observation so they will stand up to a stable manhood so a dependable community which truth will dent and age遗失. Let us remember the story of the black humble.

When the commissioned officers of Company G arrived in Los Angeles on last Saturday, to cast their votes for the Colonelcy of the regiment, they were told they could not vote without being uniform. As the unitorms of our local military company have not yet been forwarded, the officers were in a quandary. Captain Wood and Lieutenant Lewis began a still hunt for the necessary garments, which were specially acquired and donned. Lieutenant Gade could not be supplied with proper uniform, but a gallant guardman of the Angelic city came to his rescue with a Major's uniform, which, however, Gaale declined with thanks.
Six months ago the Tastin Motor Railway Company received a franchise to occupy Fourth street in Santa Ana, from the center of the city to the Santa Fe railroad depot, the franchise to take effect when the railroad was incorporated and the papers recorded. This they are doing now, but the late election of the Trustees defeated the ticket of this faction of the city, and the new Council week voted a franchise for the same street to the Santa Ana, Orange and Tastin horse railway company, who without waiting for resolutions or permit, took possession of the disputed territory between sunset and sunrise. Fifty men and eight teams with plows and scrapers have done the work. Forty-five of them were arrested and taken before a Justice, who released them temporarily. They returned at once their work. The other company expected to have laid their track by this time and the result is now the question.
