THURSDAY... JANUARY 29, 1860
From a gentleman who recently returned from a visit to San Bernardino county, we learned that the late sold some considerable damage there by infesting fruits of all kinds. Just the contrary to the state of affairs. Now, as we stated last week, the time is appropriate for Anaheim to send an exhibit of products to the Southern California Fair to be held in Riverside next month, the date of which we have already published. Anaheim could collect a very creditable exhibit of fruits and forward the same to the fair and reap rich rewards thereby. It is the best means of advertising ourselves, and we want our people to act accordingly. It has been rumored that were we to forward an exhibit to this coming fair, we would not receive our just favors at the hands of the persons who will manage it. This is to be regretted would it prove true. We propose, providing Anaheim are fit to send an exhibit, that we be represented at the fair by one or more of our enterprising townmen. We trust that our people will act in this very important matter.
In these days of boom most everybody possessing a strip of land, whether it be cultivated or not, will sacrifice it for its subdivision into town lots. The idea is prevalent that the profit accruing from the subdivision of property to supply the demand of the auctioneer is far greater than from any other source. This may be the case in some instances; but the beautiful orange groves and prolific vineyards must be spared. An orange orchard in this county, well-kept and free from scale, is one of the most profitable investments that man can wish for. The prices ruling at the present time for the golden fruit are most gratifying, and therefore the owner of an orange-grove will reap a far greater profit therefrom than the individual who subdivides. At the present rate of townite subdivisions the time is not far distant when we will have to import our fruits for home consumption. This would be something to be regretted. The men possessing small holdings which are in a state of crisis as the Riverside.
Good orange land now counts too much, the trees need too much, and the time required for an orchard to come little hearing is too long, for our orange growers to be able to afford to buy worthless—or next to worthless—stock.
The Los Angeles Tribune says: All of the raisin growers of Southern California are interested in the changes made by Los Angeles merchants against raisin dealers in Chicago. These charges are that the packages of California raisins are broken by the Lake City men and an inferior quality of fruit mixed with the best bras in, the whole being then sold to retailers and consumers as "London Layers," and "Debena" raisins from Fresno and Riverside. If this is true, and there seems to be very little doubt of it, an injury is being done to the California raisin producing industry, which, unless strong remedial measures are at once taken, it will require years to recover.
The time for the trimming of trees has about arrived, and a number of our citizens would do well to trim up the trees, especially those having branches overhanging fences, of a height to interfere with passing pedestrians. In this connection it would be wise for our people to clean up back yards and alleys, as cleanliness is a great help to prevention of diseases, which are raging in other portions of our State. We are glad to state that a number of our property owners have already improved the sanitary condition of their homes. A sprinkle of some purifying substances after cleaning up, is recommended by physicians, as a disinfection for contagious diseases.

It is admitted that the curtailed orange crop this season is mainly due to the cutting down of so many orchards for building purposes. In this section of the State orchards of all kinds will doubtless give way to houses and garden lots. The same cause that led to the cutting down of so many orchards in 1887 will continue from year to year. Homesekers are coming here in a steady, and it may be said in an increasing stream from every part of the continent. The beat orange land is about the least resistance land. Until the climate radically changes the facts just stated will be facts. Each year increasing demands will be made for orange land for towns and homes. In these prices which are not warranted by any crop except crops of people. As time rolls on population will demand pretty much all of the good orange land in Southern California for houses and gardens. It is doubtful if the planting of orange orchards has lately increased their acreage, while the demand for good oranges is constantly increasing and new markets are being opened up by the extension of railways; and cold storage will make them articles of consumption every day in the year wherever freight is carried by land or sea. In view of these facts no person can err who plants the right kinds of orange trees and gives them good care. They are the means of ornamenting the land, enriching the owner and irresistibly attracting purchasers. There is scarcely a possibility of orange growing being overdone, or of choices oranges ever being cheap. Every man who makes a home should plant some orange trees. They are a good investment.

The Los Angeles Herald may sensibly say: "Anahaim is the oldest colony in the county. As such that community has been paying taxes longer and more than any other outside this city. In spite of this the Board of Supervisors have been heretofore asked to do nothing for the 'Mother Colony.' Now the people of Anahaim, after paying taxes for thirty years, come forward and ask to have a bridge built across the north wash between their town and the lovely and growing districts known as North Anahaim, Orangathorpe and Placentia. The following cautionary remarks are taken from the Los Angeles Times of the 20th inch: We notice that some persons are about to plant over 400 acres to orange trees in San Fernando Valley. It is stated that these trees are to be of the "Riverside naval" variety, and to come from Florida. The Pacific Fruit Grower, in its latest issue, contains the following warning remarks in regard to Florida orange trees: Our horticulturists should exercise the greatest caution in purchasing orange trees from Florida, to see that they get what they bargain for. The large demand for trees has caused unscrupulous persons in Florida to engage extensively in the business of supplying trees which purport to be Riverside navals, but are really nothing of the kind. In a letter recently received from a prominent Florida nurseryman square the following passages: "I am ashamed for my State, to say that I know of parties who have out many thousands of birds from the old or Bahia naval and not them on purpose to send to California facts no person can err who plants the right kinds of orange trees and gives them good care. They are the means of ornamenting the land, enriching the owner and irresistably attracting purchasers. There is scarcely a possibility of orange growing being overdone, or of choices oranges ever being cheap. Every man who makes a home should plant some orange trees. They are a good investment."
