A witness in a case tried lately in Augusta, Ga., testified that he drinks "in an ordinary day's 'bender'" from sixteen to twenty-three quarts of beer. A Yale Sophomore (resident of St. Louis), who led a party of his classmates in hazing a Freshman by painting his legs and feet, has been expelled by the Faculty. An Albany syndicate, which has been formed to encourage the extirpation of the English sparrow, offers $1 per hundred for 50,000 of the birds. Henry W. Bishop, a resident of Chicago, proposes to equip, at a cost of not less than $25,000, a training school for nurses in connection with the Pittsburgh House of Mercy. In a single ward of Philadelphia there are 500 cases of typhoid fever. The disease is attributed to the defective sewerage system of the city, which is chiefly on the surface. The Grand Jury recently organized in Gwinnett county, Ga., was composed of sixteen Methodists, six Baptists and one liberal, yet it ignored more complaints than any Grand Jury the county ever had. A number of honest grangers in the neighborhood of Mason City, Iowa, have been atrociously swindled by bad men, who sent them bricks in boxes, instead of the counterfeit money the farmers had paid for. Some railroad companies are beginning to apply steam driver breaks as a further safeguard against possible accidents.
