The Los Angeles Cremation Society are getting ready for business. Two different cemetery companies are budding for the crematory. It is not yet decided as to the location, but the matter will be settled in a few days. The furnace is now on the way from the East. Cremation, like all other innovations, will have its day of local opposition, but it will no doubt subside in time. To our mind the thought of being reduced to a handful of ashes is not near so repulsive as contemplating the gradual decay and putrefaction of the body. Outlook.
There were indications on Tuesday evening that a good rain would fall before the next morning. It commenced to drizzle only at about 9 o'clock, and the fall was hardly sufficient to lay the dust. The farmers—in fact, everybody—are on the lookout for the expected rain, and weather prophets are numerous at present, judging from the many different predictions that are being manufactured and circulated.
Signboards have been placed at the junction of all the new streets which have been opened through the bonded vineyards by the syndicate. It would be a good idea for the Town Trustees to put up signboards on all the old streets, as it would no doubt be a great convenience to many who do not know the names of them, and to strangers as well.
While Mr. and Mrs. Werder were driving into their yard on Monday, their horse shied and capsized the buggy, throwing the occupants to the ground. Mrs. Werder escaped injury, but her husband was badly hurt. His most painful injury was on his tongue, which was nearly cut in two by his teeth. His injuries were attended to by Dr. Bullard, who reports his patient as doing well.
Fruit trees are already commencing to blossom in this vicinity. The early varieties of apricot, peach and plum trees are putting forth their robes of white and colored blossoms.

The celebrated Duff vineyard of 55 acres was sold this week to T. S. Raddock and G. W. Thompson for $13,000. As the Anaheim Minstrels remarked: Why is the Anaheim boom like a Santa Ana wind? Because it makes real estate change hands.

Green gage trees are blossoming, as also are the trees which bear the small oval-shaped red plum, the name of which is unknown to us.

The orchards are too remote and scattered from the depot to insure larger shipments in any one week. The fruit is being shipped partly in the Tiffany refrigerator cars.
The marriage of Geo. C. Hagar of Orange and Miss Julia, daughter of John Hanua, took place in Los Angeles on Thursday. The following from the St. Helena Star is referred to the Pasadena papers, in the hope that they will administer the deserved castigation:
R. F. Rammers, of this place, has received a letter from his brother, George, who is at Pasadena. The writer states that "the lack of rain in that section is causing much sickness; there are 150 cases of typhoid fever in Pasadena; carpenters' wages are going down; painting firms are failing and the bottom seems dropping out of the country."
There came down with the excursion on Thursday a "soap gambler"—if we may so term it. He set up his stand in front of the Land Bureau's office, and commenced to sell small cakes of soap wrapped in blue paper, the purchasers having the choice of any packages in a box on the table. In the packages of soap were wrapped greenbacks in denominations of from $1 to $20. RALLY!
Important Meeting in Anaheim To-day.
The Depot Grounds Must Be Secured Without Delay.
Notes of Railroad Development in Southern California.
The citizens of Anaheim and all interested in the welfare of this section of country are requested to meet in force this afternoon at 2 o'clock in Kreger's Hall for the purpose of considering the railroad situation generally, and to devise ways and means to secure the depot grounds which are wanted by the railroad company. The exact location of these grounds are shown on a map in the office of Melrose & Knapp. They run across the east portion of the Boldt, Luedke and part of the Meese vineyards, the length being 1,800 feet and the width 300 feet. The proposed location of the depot is about the corner of Center and Orange streets. The site is a most eligible one, convenient for the whole town, and there is nothing in the way of securing the grounds except—money. It is principally to find out how to raise this money that the meeting is called to-day.
This is the critical point of Anaheim's career. Any laggardness now shown will work to the serious and irreparable disadvantage of this town and country. The continuance of the work of development begun by the Anaheim Syndicate hinges upon the speedy settlement of this railroad question, and if the enterprise and capital represented by that Syndicate be withdrawn, the effect upon the prosperity of this town will be little less than disastrous.
The Express says that a rumor has been
RAPID TRANSIT.
The Street Car Line Fairly Inaugurated.
Promptly upon the receipt of the iron for the street car line, Capt. Geo. C. Knox, the company's engineer, sent a large force of men from Los Angeles, under the superintendence of H. A. Robertson, and began work on the line with an energy which promises to complete the system within the next two weeks. The ceremony of driving the first spike took place on Monday afternoon in the presence of a large number of people. Theo. Rimpan, President of the Company, wielded the hammer, and drove the spike with a precision and ease which called forth loud expressions of admiration. Mr. Reiser baptized the spike with a libation of wine, but sufficient was reserved to allow everyone present to drink to the success of the enterprise.
Two of the cars were brought into requisition on Thursday, and used on the completed part of the road.
Meeting of the Water Company.
The annual meeting of stockholders in the A. U. W. Co. convened on Saturday last, and an unusually large amount of stock was represented. The Auditing Committee made an elaborate report upon the books of the Secretary and Treasurer, and, in conclusion said: "We find that the books have been kept in a careful and business like manner."
The report was received and accepted.
The proposed amendments to the by-laws were referred to a committee consisting of Messrs. Shanklin, Melrose, Holman, Theo. Rimpau and McDermont, with instructions to report recommendations in regard to the amendments at a meeting of stockholders to be held on Saturday, the 12th instant, at 2 o'clock. The same committee were authorized to consider a proposition to extend the area of the water district.
The election for directors resulted as follows:
Five cars, well filled with people, comprised the excursion on Thursday, and the trip to and from the city was made without mishap. An excellent and abundant dinner was in waiting for the visitors at the pavilion, and a bevy of ladies superintended the giving out of the good things for the inner man. By the way, much of the success attending these excursions, and in fact every public occasion, is due to the handsome ladies of Anaheim. Their praise is sung far and wide, and in every newspaper report dattering mention is made of them. The Anaheim Band discoursed excellent music during the day.

The Express says that a rumor has been prevalent that the recently commenced Los Angeles and San Bernardino railway was about to change hands and that the Southern Pacific Company would become possessed of the enterprise. With the advent in the city of Mr. Stephen T. Gage, the rumor was again hard pushed in railroad circles that the road had been or was about to be sold. Despite diligent inquiry nothing reliable could be made from it. It is a well known fact that the Southern Company would like to have a line to that city with branches thereabout, and that the obtaining of the right of way for their road by the L. A. & S. B. people, nipped a rapidly hatching scheme of the Southern folks in the bud. A leading stockholder in the new line could or would give no information regarding the alleged sale, but said his company had great expectations of the value of their road and that it would take considerable money to buy it.
At a conference between property owners and the officers of the S. B. and L. A. R. R. last week the location of the depot was agreed upon, two and one half miles north of Pomona. The route is definitely on the south line of the Loop place, due west along the old San Bernardino stage road to Mud Springs. The town around the new depot will be called Pomona Heights.
Long Beach Hotel and grounds in Los Angeles county have been purchased through trustees for some person unknown. It is surmised that the purchase was made in trust for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Company and that the company will convert Long Beach into a magnificent resort for tourists. The Southern Pacific runs to Santa Monica and the Santa Fe will head the former company off with Long Beach. This rumor has, however, been denied.
The San Diego Union says that there are about forty teams at work at San Luis Key grading northward to meet the Atchison extension from Santa Ana to San Diego.
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 2.—The Southern Pacific Company has arranged for cheap excursions from Los Angeles to San Francisco and Oakland. The object is to induce the large number of Eastern visitors now pouring into Los Angeles to come north and inspect the inducements held out to them here. Alameda and Santa Clara counties intend making a strong bid for this trade, and delegates from the Oakland Board of Trade will soon go to Los Angeles for the purpose of advising visitors to take a trip north before investing. Oakland people are highly incensed over the reports which have reached here that Los Angeles real estate dealers are circulating statements that snow said: "We find that the books have been kept in a careful and business like manner."
The election for directors resulted as follows: L. Schorn, 5383; Dr. Gardiner, 4964; R. H. Gilman, 4813; W. M. McFadden, 4371; John Hunter, 3337; E. Browning, 3078; F. A. Korn, 2986; A. McDermont, 2719; J. P. Zeyn, 2900; J. B. Pierce, 2363; L. Parker, 482. Messrs. Schorn, Korn, Gardiner, McFadden, Hunter, Gilman and Brownning were declared elected. After a general discussion of the affairs of the company the greeting adjourned until next Saturday.
The committee above referred to met on Tuesday and after a session of several hours voted unanimously to recommend the following changes to the by-laws:
Strike out Section I of Article I.
Amend Article VI to read:
SECTION I. No water shall be used on land not owned by stockholders. Water sold to a stockholder must be used on his own land, and water purchased by one stockholder can not be given, or sold to, or be used by another stockholder.
SEC. 2. All water shall be sold in runs. Stockholders shall be entitled to buy such an amount of water per share, on each run, as the Board of Directors may deem just, and no stockholder shall be allowed to buy more water per share than another.
SEC. 3. By the signing of these by-laws each and every stockholder waives any and all rights which might accrue him by virtue of the provisions of Section 552 of the Civil Code of the State of California, and any and all kindred laws.
SEC. 4. All water sold shall be sold by the measure or head of 100 inches under four-inch pressure; i.e., four inches above the orifice.
New Time Schedule
On and after the 5th instant the morning train will leave Anaheim at 6:40, arriving in Los Angeles at 7:50. This will make travelers "get up in the morning early."
On and after the same data Los Angeles will have two express trains to and from San Francisco. One, known as the Los Angeles Express, will leave San Francisco at 3:30 P.M. and arrive in Los Angeles at 11:40 A.M.; it will leave Los Angeles at 1:30 P.M., and arrive in San Francisco at 10:40 A.M.
The Atlantic Express will leave San Francisco at 9:30 A.M. and arrive in Los Angeles at 7:30 A.M. Leaving for the East at 8 A.M.
The Pacific Express will arrive in Los Angeles at 7 P.M., leaving for the North at 7:30 P.M., and arriving in San Francisco at 4:40 P.M.
—Los Angeles Times— The unsuccessful issue of a final attempt at one of the most important issues in American history.
Success at the Oil Fields
Well No. 6, at the Puente, about nine miles northeast of Anaheim, is down about 700 feet. The Times says that at 8 o'clock Monday night the day shift had quit work and the night shift had just come on. The gas was burning brightly beside the well and the workmen were just about to lower the drill into the well, when there came a volcano of oil, 13 inches in diameter at the base and spouting 60 feet into the air. As soon as the men saw the dark mass burst bubbling over the edge of the well, their first thought was for the burning gas, and two of them rashed for the jet. The vast column of oil struck them and flung them down the hill as though they had been straws; caught the burning gas and leaped madly to the sky, a monument of flame. By great good fortune neither of them were seriously hurt, though both were well shaken up and one was somewhat burned. A hose which is always kept in readiness was turned at once upon the pillar of fire, and the flames were finally extinguished—not however, until the derrick, cables, hoisting apparatus, etc., were consumed and considerable casing destroyed." By the exertions of men the engine was saved. The damage amounts to something over $2000.
The well has been capped. It is needless to say that Lacy and Rowland, the owners, are happy despite their loss.
The Anaheim oil wells, located on the same bolt, are being vigorously bored, and this latest strike gives to the enterprising men great hope for a fortunate issue.

Alameda and Santa Clara counties intend making a strong bid for this trade, and delegates from the Oakland Board of Trade will soon go to Los Angeles for the purpose of advising visitors to take a trip north before investing. Oakland people are highly incensed over the reports which have reached here that Los Angeles real estate dealers are circulating statements that snow is five inches deep in Oakland. Real estate dealers in Oakland say that if they can only once tempt a few hundred of the wealthy thousands now flocking into Southern California up this way, they will soon succeed in stemming the current to Los Angeles and turn the tide toward the northern part of the State. The Southern Pacific Company will, it is stated, do all in their power to aid a movement in this direction, but the real estate dealers here do not seem very sanguine of great success.
Town Trustees.
The Town Trustees held a special meeting on Tuesday, and introduced a resolution authorizing the President and Secretary to execute a deed to F. Teichmann for certain property bought by the Town for taxes.
At the regular meeting on Wednesday the resolution referred to was adopted.
The Treasurer reported $699,27 in the Treasury.
A bridge was ordered built across Adelaide street.
Certain amendments to ordinances were adopted. They are published in another column.
The salary of A. Schneider, engineer of the Water Works, was increased from $45 to $50.
Marshal Smythe reported that he had appointed H. C. Gade as his Deputy, which appointment was approved.
All Getting Wealthy.
[Los Angeles Express.]
The people of Anaheim, who have been very quiet for several years, are just now plunged into the vortex of a strong boom—that is, if a boom has a vortex. At all events they are building street railways, houses, and we know not what, and everybody is growing wealthy.

—Los Angeles Times: The unsuccessful issue of a fiend's attempt at one of the most heinous crimes ever recorded, became known to the authorities yesterday. The well-known school of the Sisters of Charity stands on Alameda street, at the corner of Macy. Though the building has a brick front a large proportion of the structure is frame, and of a very inflammable nature. Among the rooms in the back part of the house is a small one in which the men who are employed about the grounds get their meals. In this room a table stands about two feet from the window. Upon this table night before last, some one placed a large pile of twisted papers and set fire to them—with sixty unsuspecting children sleeping in the frame building overhead. The flames consumed the tablecloth and the curtain, charred the window-casing—and went out, how, a merciful heaven only knows. The attempt at murderous arson was not discovered till morning, and there is not the slightest cloak to the identity of the fiend who could have fathered such a crime.

In Anaheim, January 29, Mrs. Hannah Fithian, aged 83 years and 6 months.
The flames consumed the tablecloth and the curtain, charred the window-casting—and went out, how, a merciful heaven only knows. The attempt at murderous arson was not discovered till morning, and there is not the slightest cloak to the identity of the fiend who could have fathered such a crime.
—Big Rabbit Drive on Friday, the 11th inst. Everybody is invited to meet at Browning's house at^10 o'clock.
Instructors for all Instruments. Music books for Piano and Organ, all standard, at a reduction from publishers' price of 25% to 50%.
Pellegrin's Jewelry and Music Store.
