Insure against fire in the first-class company for which Richard Malrose is agent. Policies written and delivered at once.
The vices and fruit taxes at Pamadena are said to have been damaged on Sunday by an inch of hail.
Patents for school lands in this county have been signed by the Governor: Frank Raynes, 320 acres; Eliza Davies, 80 acres.
The taxes in Anaheim School District are now due and payable to the collector at his office in the portland.
Prof. Hinton writes that the fire at Pemona has brought his business to a sudden close. He has gone to Santa Barbara.
Major Kinley of Los Angeles claims to have grown a fig tree from the seed, something which has heretofore been considered impossible.
Miss Helena Wagner gave recitations from German authors at the Hall on Wednesday evening, much to the gratification of a select and appreciative audience.
The proposed importation of negroes by Lacky Baldwin to work on his Santa Anita farm, has been abandoned for some reason not made public.
Over thirty ostriches have been hatched at the ostrich farm this season, and still the work goes bravely on. There has been but one casualty—a young chick, frightened by visitors, ran wildly about and broke his leg.
At Westminster on Tuesday, Willie, the six-year-old son of Jesse Davis, was thrown from a wagon by the sudden starting of the horse, and his elbow was thrown out of joint.
The cottony-cushion scale has appeared in an orange orchard in Pamadena. As yet no general warfare has been made upon this work for the Immigration Magistrate.
If Anaheim does not furnish areas of the numerous colonies which are forming in the East to settle in this immediate vicinity, it will be because of blundering mismanagement on the part of its people.
Of the floss or more associations of persons which are even now formed for the purpose of settling somewhere in the Golden State, there is probably not one which has determined upon any particular place of settlement. They are seeking for information; they are open to conviction, and can be influenced by the intelligent presentation of reasons in favor of some particular locality. Some of them will come to Anaheim if there is special effort made to get them here; and the local Immigration Association which has been formed for just such purpose is respectfully and earnestly urged to do what is necessary to get some of these colonies to settle here.
The suggestive statement that we find going the rounds of the press, to the effect that two years and a half ago there were but a half dozen houses in Pomona and now it has a population of over 1,500, ought not only to stir our people to extra exertion to keep abreast of the times, but also to cause a twinge of reproach for the years of apathy and indifference. In nothing which goes to make a healthier, more pleasant and more profitable home is Pomona superior to Anaheim; and did good taste permit, or necessity require, we could enumerate many things, very essential to prosperity, in which this section of the county excels. The point is that if tact, energy and enterprise can transform a barren plain into a populous community within three years, why cannot a community already established and famed for its prosperity, its climate and its soil add largely to its population, especially when it is known that there are thousands of people practically waiting to be asked to come here?
If the management of the Anaheim Immigration Society has not yet considered the question of endeavoring to secure some of these colonies, it is to be hoped that it will not delay a day in meeting and deciding upon the best method of procedure.
A New Foe to the Orange.
Ed. Gazette.—At the last meeting of the Orange Entomological Society, one of the members remarked finding a larvae or worm boring into oranges in the same manner that the larvae of the codling moth burrows into apples. The gentleman was quite positive, however, that it was not the latter insect—
Management Affiliates:
Miss Leslie C. Parkins, whom served at Palmetto Wells, has brought up against R. J. (Luddy) Baldwin for $200,000 for breach of promise. The facts of case are thus given by the Three:
Some four years ago the Parkins family moved from Ventura to Los Angeles, where the father rented a patch of land from E.B. Baldwin was then about 16 years of age, shortly after the family had taken up residence on the land rented from Baldwin in an evil hour came under his lecher eyes. She was then and still is regarded as handsome; in fact, some would say beautiful Baldwin immediately professed great interest in the welfare of the girl and made frequent visits to his tenant's place, finally proposing to take her to San Francisco and place her in some educational institution, where she would emerge fitted to grace the fine drawing rooms of the land. This was alluring prospect to the parents, and while the mother had her migrations on the seas projected to the Palace Hotel, where she cording to the girl's story, he unfolded her desire to marry her. She claims that she resisted his advances, but that finally after he had given her a written promise to marriage, she consented to look on him as her future husband, and promised to obey his wishes in everything pertaining to her welfare. She alleges that she was introduced to his daughter by a former wife as her future step-mother and was by her (the daughter) so regarded. In fact, so much so was that the case that not only was she consulted about future household arrangements but that daughter even solicited her influence with Baldwin to loosen his purse strings for the sake of her personal adornment. These again, it is alleged that she possesses upbraiding letters from the daughter concerning her treatment of Baldwin.
This state of affairs continued for such a length of time that the parents finally became anxious, and insisted that the girl should return home. Baldwin's failure kept his promise about sending the girl to school had satisfied them that he had even designed on their child even if he had not been successful in accomplishing them, and after repeated remonstrances and appeals from the mother the girl returned to Los Angeles, sadder, wiser and more beautiful than ever, her friends thought. Her life after her return was uneventful for awhile she securing employment as saleslady in one of the leading dry goods stores of the city. But it seems Fate had marked her, and that though she might be as innocent of wrong doing as the babe in the manger, the grief and relentless slayer of character, Suspicion had determined that she should have

The concerts given by the Wizard Oil Quartette the past three nights have been largely attended, and is evidence that our people appreciate good performances and are ever ready to attend them.
Twenty-four feet of one of the big flumes on the Cajon ditch collapsed on Tuesday and irrigating ceased suddenly in that district in consequence. The structure will not be repaired until next Tuesday.
There has been a great increase of water in the river since the last rains, and the probabilities are that there will be an abundance of the precious fluid for two months to come. Quite a stream of water is flowing in the river at the Burruel Point crossing.
Mr. A. McDermont sent a box of his oranges to Muscatine, Iowa, some time ago, and received word the other day that they had reached their destination in first-class order, though they had been four weeks in transit.
There is a letter in the post-office addressed to "El. T. Hynes, a Yankee plug,

A drunken row on Tuesday night resulted in the battery of Arthur Delery, the arrest of two men therefor, two jury trials is Justice Pierce's court, taking twenty-four men from their business the better part of a day, the acquittal of one of the accused and the fining of the other ten dollars. "Much ade about nothing."
A number of Minnesota families desire a location in California, and write to the San Francisco Immigration Association for information. A letter has also been received from a lady philanthropist in New York, who wishes to form a colony for retired ministers; also inquiring if the State will grant land for a Horticultural College for women.
The rainfall of last Sunday night, according to Mr. Langenberger's gauge, was 42 hundredths and on Monday 20 hundredths, making a total for the season of 5.02 inches. The rain would have done more good had it come earlier in the season, but even at this late date it was of great benefit.
A New Foe to the Orange.
Ed. Gazette.—At the last meeting of the Orange Entomological Society, one of the members remarked finding a larvae or worm boring into oranges in the same manner that the larvae of the codling moth burrows into apples. The gentleman was quite positive, however, that it was not the latter insect—with which he was well acquainted—as it was more slender and tapering.
Not having seen a specimen of this new enemy of the orange I am at a loss to say what it is, as no account of any larvae infesting oranges in this manner has ever come to my notice; it is either a new pest, or an old one playing a new role.
The only larvae known to me that would be at all likely to burrow into oranges are those of the codling moth, peach moth and dried-fruit moth.
As stated above, this new pest cannot well be the larvae of the codling moth. The larvae of the peach moth is of a reddish color, narrowly banded with yellow, whereas the new pest is said to be entirely of a creamy, yellow color. The larvae of the dried-fruit moth is slender and tapering and of a pale yellow color, thus agreeing with the description of this new pest, and indeed, the latter may belong to this same species; specimens of which I have taken in this locality, but have never met with the larvae except at Sacramento, where it is occasionally found in dried peaches. It seems hardly probable, however, that an insect which feeds upon dried deciduous fruits would also attack fresh citrus fruits, but this can be ascertained only by rearing this new pest to the perfect state.
If parties finding larvae in oranges will bring or send them to me I will try to rear them to the perfect state and thus determine the species. They may be placed between two small pads of cotton in a tin or wooden box and then sent by mail to the undersigned at Anaheim, Cal.
Only a few specimens of this new pest were found, but if it is allowed to multiply unmolested, it will doubtless become as great a scourge to the orange-grower as the larvae of the codling moth is to the grower of apples and pears. D. W. Coquillett.
Evidence of Success.
Since the success of the ostrich industry has become an assured fact, the stock of the corporation has a more solid value than it had when the future of the enterprise was enveloped in doubt. A San Francisco paper has this item: "F. S. Weston has filed a complaint in the Superior Court in which he avers that five shares of stock of the California Ostrich Farming Company owned by Louis A. Garrett, was sold by the company on the 30th of September, to pay an assessment of $8 a share, to Fernando Boracira, he paying therefor $45. A few days ago Garrett transferred his claim upon the stock to Weston, who has offered to redeem the stock, which offer the company refuses to
This state of affairs continued for such length of time that that parents finally be came anxious, and insisted that the girl should return home. Baldwin's failure to keep his promise about sending the girl to school had satisfied them if he had even designs on their child even if he had not been successful in accomplishing them, and after repeated remonstrances and appeals from the mother the girl returned to Los Angeles, sadder, wiser and more beautiful than ever, her friends thought. Her life after her return was uneventful for awhile she securing employment as saleslady in one of the leading dry goods stores of the city. But it seems Fate had marked her, and that though she might be as innocent of wrong doing as the babes in the manger, the grief and relentless slayer of character, Suspicion had determined that she should hereafter know no peace of mind. The rest is so told. Anonymous letters found their way to her employer, and she soon found herself out of employment. In a fit of desperation she listened to the coining words of a young Lothario, and a few days ago figured in an unenviable scandal.
The strangest part of the story told by the girl's friends is that a short time ago Baldwin visited the store where she was employed and requested an interview with her. This she refused to grant then, but told him that she would be at leisure shortly as the store would soon close for the night, and that he could meet her on the street at a certain place. According to agreement Baldwin met her, and then there informed her that he was tired of his present wife to whom he has only been married a year, and said that he was going to get rid of her, and that Miss Perkins was the only woman he ever loved, as soon as he got rid of his wife he was going to fulfill his promise of marriage to her.
The reason assigned by the mother of the girl for not bringing the suit when it was first discovered that Baldwin did not mean to marry her daughter, was the family's aversion to publicity.

The management of the Boys' and Girls' Aid Society of San Francisco have solved the problem of cheap living. In the publication of the Society, Child and State, we find the following:
At how small a price a person can live, and maintain health, is rather an interesting problem. A society with many hungry children to provide for, and little means to provide with, is compelled to reduce the equation to its lowest terms.
During 1884 record of the Aid Society is as follows:
| NEARELS | TOTAL COST | COST PER MEAL |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| January | 2700 | $88 37 | 2.20 |
| February | 3256 | $66 68 | 1.80 |
| March | 3080 | $108 59 | 3.87 |
| April | 3079 | $70 75 | 1.90 |
| May | 3071 | $70 75 | 1.97 |
| June | 3428 | $110 38 | 3.28 |
| July | 3497 | $63 39 | 2.90 |
| August | 3110 | $79 00 | 2.50 |
| September | 2749 | $52 11 | 1.87 |
| October | 2819 | $82 06 | 2.91 |
| November | 2453 | $60 83 | 2.57 |
| December | 3905 | $75 58 | 2.41 |
The items under the head of "Total Cost" represent monthly expenditure for food. When the same is large, it indicates that heavy supplies were bought that month, not that they were all eaten. All the food consumed is included, but not too cost of preparation. The quality is always best—no inferior article of any kind ever being bought.
The question is often asked: "On what can you feed the children for such a price?" And those who do not know us, ask "if they get enough!"
To the first we would quote an average weekly bill of fare:
Breakfast—Cornmeal mush, oatmeal or cracked wheat with syrup, bread, coffee or milk

The rain would have done more good had it come earlier in the season, but even at this late date it was of great benefit; and one result of it will be an increased production of hay and grain.
The approach of Memorial Day—May 30th—suggests the idea of the appropriateness of decorating the soldiers' graves in the Anaheim Cemetery, with the assistance of the G. A. R. Post of Santa Ana, or if that can not be had, under the auspices of the ex-soldiers resident in this vicinity, of whom there are quite a number. If they would take the initiative, we are assured that the ladies would provide an abundance of floral tributes. We hope to chronicle some movement of this kind next week.
On last Sunday night Marshal Bohn was murderously assaulted by Quante Sais, a notorious criminal whom he had arrested and was taking to jail. When near the jail Hais, assisted by a couple of his pals, overpowered the officer, took his club away from him and pounded him on the head evidently until they were exhausted and then fled. This happened about midnight, and about two o'clock the Marshal was found wandering about silently a mile away from the scene of the assault. Dr. Ballard was called and he was engaged for two hours in swaying up the wounds on the victim's head. He was horribly bruised, and the wounds would have proved fatal to the majority of men, but there is every reason to believe that he will recover. Sais has not been arrested. If he is not captured, he will not dare to return home, and thus the community will have gotten off at a drunken mischance.
At Ranchito on Monday a Mexican named Elisalde was shot by an American named Randall. The latter torre down Elisalde's store sign, and he went to Downey and awere out a warrant for Randall's arrest, on a charge of malicious mischief, and after an examination before a justice, the desperado was held for trial. Monday Randall was in Downey, and after getting drunk had several fights. He then mounted a horse and rode to Ranchito, entering the store. After a few words he drew a pistol and shot Elisalde, the proprietor of the store, through the abdomen, killing him instantly. He then shot the dead man's brother, inflicting a serious wound in the back, after which he fled. A later account in the Herald gives this version: "On Monday morning the Elisalde brothers, merchants at Ranchito, aware out a complaint against F. L. German and W. J. Randol, charging them with misdemanor. An examination was had in Downey City, and at its conclusion, German and Randol drank heavily and started for Ranchito. At this place they met the Elisalde brothers and a pitched battle with six shooters ensued. One of the Elisaldes was fatally shot and Randol was also badly wounded, while German was wounded in the leg. Deputy Sheriff Russell arrested German and he will be brought to this city."

To the first, we would quote an average weekly bill of fare:
Breakfast—Cornmeal mush, oatmeal or cracked wheat with syrup, bread, coffee or milk.
Dinner—Soup, beef stew with dumplings, an occasional roast, mutton stew, beans or fish, vegetables; rice, tapico or bread pudding for dessert.
Supper—Bread with syrup or preserves, and tea.
Sunday Dinner—Corned beef and cabbage, or fried liver and potatoes, and dessert.
Those in doubt as to quantity can rest assured that the children are abundantly fed, generally better than ever before in their lives, and are well and healthy.

A gentleman of long experience in raising grapes says that the owners of vineyards affected by frost should put men to work among the vines trumping off the frost-bitten leaves and shoots, and afterwards the vines should be thoroughly sulphured. By attending to this matter right away, he says, the greatest benefits will result, and that the owners of vineyards will be surprised at the crop of grapes that will grow on the vines this year—even where the frost has done the greatest damage. If the dead twig and leaves are allowed to remain on the vines they will affect the quantity and quality of the grapes both this year and next.
Napa Reporter, April 23.
The vineyardists of Napa have had more experience with frost-bitten vines than the grape growers of Anzheim (a fact of which they are probably not greatly proud), and it is quite probable that from their greater experience they are better qualified to say what should be done with the vine after a frost. But the general belief here is that frost-bitten vines should be allowed to remain at least until after all danger of frost is parked. But really this is no matter to which the droughts in this farrow have little concern.
Mansgard Adoptions
Jacques G. Pestin, when parents of Pelton Wells, has brought salt and J. S. (Leaky) Baldwin for $500,000 of premises. The facts of the thesis given by the Times:
Four years ago the Perkins family from Ventura to Los Angeles, and rented a pub of land from E. J.
The young lady who brings the then about 10 years of age, and after the family had taken up their land the land rented from Baldwin, hour came under his loathsome was then and still is regarded as: an fact, some would say beautiful, immediately professed great interest in face of the girl and made frequent its tenant's place, finally proposing her to San Francisco and place an educational institution, whence emerge fitted to grace the finest rooms of the land. This was an impact to the parents, and while she had her misgivings on the sub-constituted over giving her consent, were finally overcome, and she allowed her child to leave in the Baldwin.
Another having been won over, did not make hasts slowly in postposition into effect. He immediatarrangements to carry off his prize, tender and tearful leave-taking him and himself shook the dust of them from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their feet and took the land from their foot.
Dr. Streuel thought it would be a more difficult matter than Mr. Milco anticipated to keep vermin out of all qualities of soil in all localities. He thought it better to feed them a little.
Dr. Kimball coincided with this idea. He had found by experience that when he kept the weeds entirely out of his orange grove, the roots of the trees suffered; but when he left a strip of vegetation, it seemed to act as a safety valve. Poisoned raisins he had found a very tempting habit for the vermin.
Professor Hilgard thought poisoned carrots an excellent remedy, several gentlemen agreeing with him.
Mr. Hatch suggested that the gopher evil could be averted—not remedied—by not allowing any root crops, potatoes, etc., to grow among the trees.
Dr. S. E. Chapin, inspector of fruit pests, had found no means efficacious except the actual extermination of each individual gopher. When one of the vermin was caught and his head chopped off, they knew they had a gopher. He had great success with the ordinary sized Newhall wire trap, which cost about twenty cents apiece.
Senator De Long used no trap, but simply placed poisoned wheat or carrots in the runway. He had found this very effectual. Gophers were very destructive to young apricot trees. They would girdle them just beneath the surface, for which reason the earth should not be banked up about the trees. He said he kept a man employed all the time making war on gophers.
General M. G. Vallejo stated that he had cleared Lauryma Montes of gophers by planting Cruz de Malta, a plant brought from Mexico, all over his place. He recommended it as a most efficacious remedy. It is also a very ornamental plant. The gopher would either die from eating it or leave in disguise. Being asked how much seed should be sown to the acres, the General replied:

Being asked how much seed should be sown to the acre, the General replied that it should be scattered indiscriminately, not by acres—"Gophers don't go by acres." W.H.Aiken thought that if General Vallejo could introduce this remedy generally he would be most certainly a benefactor of his race and the American people. He had sometimes wondered what in the providence of Almighty God these miserable pests had been created for. He had desired, as the patriarchs of old, to sit under his own fig tree, and to that end some time since set out six trees. He began sitting under the first—and the gopher took that; he moved to the second, and that went also; and this he continued until the last had gone, and he was left sitting out in the blazing sun.
Commendable Action
Mr.I.W.Hellman,the President of the Farmers'& Merchants' Bank of Los Angeles is a very rich man. His wealth is the result of his own sagacity and industry, with perhaps some assistance from the "good luck" which seems to attend all the ventures of some people. Like all successful men he has been subjected to savage criticism and malicious animadversion, much of which was doubtless undeserved. A recent action of his will give a new insight into his character and doubtless cause many people, who know him only by reputation, to have a kindlier feeling for the man. Andres Briewalter, who died last week, bequeathed to Mr.Hellman money and property which would amount to $50,000 or $75,000. Mr.Hellman has refused to accept the legacy. He is reported to have said:
In addition having been appointed one of the executors of Mr.Briswalter, I am also an absolute legatee and a residuary legatee of his estate. I am both entirely against my continuous earnest protest. Mr.Briswalter and myself had known each other for twenty-eight years. We had been intimate for fifteen years and I have occupied the relation of his banker, involving a very confidential intercourse, for a great white. Some time ago he sent for me and desired to make me his executor. I told him,"Andres, I am too busy a man to assume such a trust." He replied that if I would not oblige him all our previous relations of personal friendship would look like hypocrisy. I then consented to serve if he would associate with me other executives who would do the principal work. The only visit I ever made to him outside of a single call was to urge him to make provision for his relation, and in this I was assisted by Father Peter Verdaguer. In our efforts; however, we were disappointed. He was implacable, saying that his niece knew that she had nothing to expect from him.
I will add that I do not intend to accept a dollar of Mr.Briswalter's bequest, absolute or residuary. I intend to have a deed drawn up as soon as Mr.Glassel gets home, giving my whole interest in Mr.Briswalter's estate to the Roman Catholie and Protestant church.
