Scientific NOTES. A London botanist has endeavored to prove that plants have a certain form of intelligence, and are able, at least, to exert voluntary power as certain lowly organized animals. One proof of this is the plant's avoidance of obstacles placed artificially in their way by bending aside before touching. The manufacture of mild steel by the Beumer process has been so greatly reduced in cost in England, that steel ships and iron ships of the same class are now offered at precisely the same price. This possibility arises largely from the fact that a steel ship of a given strength can be made of much lighter weight than one of iron. M. Delamier has invented an electric lamp having for its essential feature a hammer which carries one of the carbons and receives a rapid reciprocating motion from a coil through which an intermittent current passes. Sparkes caused by the alternate contact and separation of the carbons produce the effect of a continuous light. Luminous paint, so called, continues to be imported in large quantities by regions where earthquakes are prevalent. In the Philippine Islands small metallic plates coated with the paint are so disposed about the houses as to afford ready guidance at first intimation of an earthquake for the inmates to reach the street doors and make their escape from the building in danger of becoming ruins suddenly. A London scientist says that the highest velocity that has yet been imparted to a cannon ball is 1,626 feet per second, equal to a mile in 3.2 seconds. The velocity of the earth at the equator, due to rotation on its axis, is 1,000 miles per hour, or a' mile in 3.6 seconds; and thus, if a cannon ball was fired due west, and could maintain its initial velocity, it would beat the sun in its apparent journey around the earth. A prominent Brazilian physician, who has been making a special study of yellow fever, thinks that it may be prevented as small-pox is, by vaccination. The Emperor, Don Pedro, has approved of this method, and some hundreds of persons have been vaccinated. Not one of them had at the latest accounts taken the disease. The doctor and the Emperor are both confident that the new idea is an invaluable discovery. BLEACHING OUTRICH FEATHERS. 1. Wash the feathers with Castile soap and rinse them thoroughly with lukewarm water in order to remove all the grasps and swamp which may stick to the fins. 2. Seek feathers in a bath composed of of one gallon of ammonia, 20° Be., to every eight gallons of plain water, for about 8 to 10 hours. 3. Take feathers out of this bath, and squeeze out the excess of ammonia which is in the fine by passing feathers through a wringer. 4. Put feathers in a bath composed of 5 gallons peroxide of hydrogen, with an addition of 12 to 17 ounces of ammonia, let it work slowly, stirring from time to time for about 6 hours; after 6 hours' working put feathers in one side of the bath and add 5 gallons peroxide of hydrogen and 3 to 4 ounces of ammonia. Stir the bath well so as to insure the mixture of the peroxide with the ammonia. Then let the bath work for 9 to 12 hours more, after that time add again 2 or 3 ounces of ammonia. The peroxide will work yet for 12 hours more until it gets exhausted and you may ascertain the fact by the following process: Take a small quantity of the bath in a tumbler and throw in a few crystals of permanganate of potash; should bubbles of gas appear, it is proof that the peroxide is working yet if none appear the peroxide is exhausted. Then the feathers have to be rinsed 3 or 4 times in lukewarm water, and then to be put in a second bath of peroxide of hydrogen, which has to be prepared as follows: To 2½ gallons of peroxide of hydrogen add 1½ or 3 gallons plain water and 8 ounces of ammonia, and put in the feathers. Let the bath work so for ten hours, and after add again 2 ounces of ammonia as before, and it will then work 12 hours more until it is exhausted. It is claimed that every one who will follow carefully the above directions will succeed in making white the darkest gray feathers, say 10 pounds of feathers, by using about 8 to 7½ gallons of peroxide. After the feathers have been taken out of the peroxide bath they must be rinsed thoroughly with lukewarm water 2 or 3 times, and after soaking them in a soap solution for 6 or 8 hours, rinse them in lukewarm water, in order to remove all soap and dirt remaining in the flue. Field has written out from memory a description of a colored wedding under the old regime, which he says used to be related with gusto by Maj. Herman Bowmar. Pattison this afternoon, in response to a joint resolution of the Legislature, has designated April 16 as "Arbor Day" in Pennsylvania. In his proclamation he says: "To aid in the systematic encouragement of tree planting throughout our various communities; to awaken and cultivate among the young a taste for the study of nature and some knowledge of the necessity, profit and delight of agricultural puruits; to arouse public attention to the necessity of preserving and perpetrating to a proper degree the forests of the State, that we may escape the fires due west, and could maintain its initial velocity, it would beat the sun in its apparent journey around the earth. An Ohio school teacher went over to a country district in Indiana to engraft a little knowledge upon the youthful sprouts in that vicinity, and one of the school trustees used such grammar that the Buckeye pedagogue was threatened with hysteria. After two or three weeks he felt that he knew the trustee well enough to speak to him about it. "Why is it," he asked, "that you persist in saying 'have saw,' 'have came,' 'knowed,' and other things equally as ungrammatical." "Because I was taught that way by my parents," replied the trustee. "But, good heavens, man, you should know better than to continue murdering the English in that style." "Look here, young man," answered the trustee, "I've got a right to murder the English." "No, you haven't." "I know better. I'd like to know if my grandfather wasn't in the war of '12, and his father fit in the Revolution; and they both done all they could to murder the English, and I'll be hanged if I'm going back on the family record. If you don't like it, all you have to do is to scrimmage 'round and get money enough to 'take you back to Ohio, what you come from. That's the kind of school trustee this chicken is,' an' you needn't try to teach him your new-fangled notion; or you'll be out of a job quicker'n a Republican Postmaster after March 4th." The teacher taught the scholars after that. Wasn't Afraid of Either Disease? John P. Hale, when United States Senator, used to tell a good story of the day when he ceased to be a Democrat and became a Free-Soiler. After making a speech in the granite hills somewhere on a rainy night he brought up at a Democrat tavern. A Ship-of-War Made of Paper. [American Bookseller.] A few years ago I was on board the British man-of-war, Rakeigh, which was cruising in East Indian waters. Pointing to the substantial looking wooden walls of the vessel, a midshipman asked me if I knew what those were made of.
