WEEKLY GAZETTE SATURDAY... APRIL 11, 1850 Kleinigkeiten. Gev. Grant is still alive but his death is hourly expected. The Supreme Court has been in session in Los Angeles during the week. A fire at Pomona on Tuesday night burned Buck's furniture store. Loss, $2500. The elegant crazy quilt at Rimpan Brea., will be raffled on next Saturday. Insure against fire in the first-class companies for which Richard Malrose is agent. Policies written and delivered at once. In Los Angeles during the month of March $67,000 worth of railroad passenger tickets were sold. D. W. Coquillett of Anaheim has been honored with the appointment of Entomologist of the Orange Entomological Society. The meetings of the Directors of the A. U. W. Co., will hereafter be held in the office formerly occupied by Justice Bailey. The Shakespeare Memorial Exercises of the Chantouqua Circle of Anaheim will be held at the residence of Mr. Cowan on April 10th. It is probably unwise to borrow trouble, but we cannot refrain from predicting the unpleasant probability that the price of grapes the coming season will rule low. A petition to the Town Trustees has been generally signed, asking them to make an appropriation to aid the Immigration Association in its work. It is very probable that the desired aid will be given. Messrs Hanna & Keith report the following sales: C L Williams to J B Pierce—52 acres north of Garden Grove; $3,500. J B Meetings and Inquiries It grieves us to state that though an immigration Association has been formed to induce people to come here and arrest their money in land and invest themselves with a house, there are men of influence among us who actually drive inventions away, and if moral mission will not suffice to accomplish their religious object they do not hesitate to invoke the machinery of the law. The most reprehensible instance of this kind which has come under our notice is one in which Justice Pierce is deeply implicated. It appears that a gentleman of means—at least he had a mean appearance—did on last Tuesday visit a number of houses in this town with a view to making an investment. We are bound to believe that such was his purpose, because he was without a vest, and the cold, chilly winds of April made one desirable. An officious citizen and undisguised enemy of the association hereinbefore referred to brought the stranger before the Justice, who sent him to jail for thirty days, giving for his reprehensible action the following insufficient reasons: 1st—The stranger looked, acted and smelt like a tramp. 2d—He had the other characteristics of that nomadic class—he was very hungry and very thirsty. The first was proven by his soliciting and receiving three (3) dinners and two (2) suppers from susceptible housekeepers; and his thirst was made manifest by his surreptitiously swallowing the contents of a demijohn which contained vinegar, which he found on the back porch of a residence. And as a further evidence of his standing in the social scale, and of his depraved and vitiated taste, it is alleged that he did not know, until informed of the fact, that the vinegar was vinegar and not a prime article of whisky. But it stung like a serpent and bit like an adder, and it satisfied him. 3d—When he informed the officious citizen who arrested him that he desired to purchase property, it was 9 o'clock P. M., very dark and he was inspecting the hen house, to the noisy consternation of the poultry therein enclosed. For these and sundry other divers reasons, the Justice decided that he was not a capitalist but a vag, and in pursuance of the laws therein made and provided he committed him to jail as a soferaid. If investors are to be driven away in that fashion, the Immigration Association might as well disband. FRUIT HOTEL One of the very few kinds of fruit which has not been successfully grown in Lee County is cherries. Their culture has been often attempted, but through the time have grown vigorously enough, and put forth an abundance of blossoms; they have never fritured. Undeterred by these dismummaging facts, Gen. Shanklin has this season planted three hundred cherry trees on a part of lee ranch as which there is a parallel make somewhat skin to hard pan but not total impervious to roots. It is his theory that the resistance which this subsoil will present to the roots will compel the true make fruit instead of wood. For two years past the lot of the agriculture has not been a particularly happy one. It is true that the price paid by the cannars in a manner recompensed by the growers for the small crop horns by their trees but when they reflected that the demand for apricots is such that the price would have been maintained even had the crops be large, they can not be blamed for expressing a mild regret at the smallness of the crop. But this year the trees are blooming with profuseness which gives great hopes of a plenural crop. Let us hope that no untoward circumstance will nip our expectations "the bud." The quality of the apricots grown in Anaheim is such that among cannars there is a brisk competition to secure them. From a Sacramento paper we clip the following pertinent paragraph: A gentleman from Vaca valley and another from Yuba City were in this city yesterday, and in conversation regarding the outlook of the fruit crops in their sections, he stated that the apricot would be a failure. It is just the reverse in this vicinity. Unlikely killed by a late frost, the only danger new apprehended, Sacramento county will produce the largest crop ever known of this orchard and early fruit. The orchards alone—the river bottom, in the neighborhood of Brighton and Flornan, and as far up as Fosom, are loaded down with fruit. The railroad company are alive to the necessity of fostering the orange industry, and in the early part of the week it issued its following order to their agents: "A special orange train will be started on Thursday April 9th via Union Pacific, on Saturday w El Paso, on Tuesday via U. P. and alternating in this manner as long as full trains can be had. Notify all shippers prompt Trains via Ogden will leave Los Angeles 8 A.M., via El Paso at 5 P.M. Please keep Superintendent Polk posted as to the number of cars you will have for each special." It is probably unwise to borrow trouble, but we cannot refrain from predicting the unpleasant probability that the price of grapes the coming season will rule low. A petition to the Town Trustees has been generally signed, asking them to make an appropriation to aid the Immigration Association in its work. It is very probable that the desired aid will be given. Messrs Hanna & Keith report the following sales: C.L. Williams to J.B. Pierce—52 acres north of Garden Grove; $3,500. J.B. Pierce to C.L. Williams—House and lot on Los Angeles St.; $750. The Downey Review is the name of a new paper which takes the place of the Signal. The publisher is J.C. Rives, who, in the initial number, has demonstrated his ability as an editor and taste as a printer. The Southern California Fruit Candy Works have filed articles of incorporation with the County Clerk. Directors: Wm.H. Barnard, Chas.K. Benedict, L.H. DeMers, C.K. Walrath and Chas.Z. Culver. The capacity of the distributing reservoir on the upper ditch has been increased, and in a few weeks it will probably hold all the water which flows down the ditch at night, thus doing away with the necessity of night irrigation. A railroad official was on Tuesday investigating the feasibility of building a side track for Dreyfus & Co., and that firm is now awaiting a favorable reply from the railroad company before beginning the construction of a winery of very large capacity. The Easter services at the Presbyterian church on last Sunday morning were very interesting, and no less so were those at St. Michael's church in the evening. The latter church was decorated with a profusion of tastefully arranged flowers. We have positive instructions from "the children" at the editor's house to tell Mr. Silas Holman that the great lot of oranges which he left for them were "awful nice." They were just the kind of superb fruit we would expect from such a well-kept and thrifty orchard as Mr. Holman's. There has been considerable rain in the mountains, with the gratifying result of an increased supply of water in the river. The volume of water in the river fluctuates greatly without any apparent reason. The indications are that the fluid will be very scarce in a mouth or six weeks. The charge preferred by Dr. Pfeninger against Dr. Bullard, of practicing medicine without a license, was heard by Justice Pierce on Tuesday, and the case was dismissed, to the evident satisfaction of the crowd which filled the court room. They disdained this charge. Edward Atkinson was drowned at Santa Monica on Sunday. The surf was unusually high and strong, and but a dozen or so ventured in, among the number, Mr. Atkinson. He made no call for help and nobody saw him go down, although nearly two hundred people were on the beach watching the bathers. Several good swimmers were on the raft and could have helped any one, han there been any call for assistance. It was not known that he was drowned until his clothes were found in the dressing room an hour afterwards. Mr. Atkinson was a carpenter, aged 20, and had been in the surf nearly every day the past week, and was a good swimmer. He was a son of Mr. Joseph Atkinson, who lives on Temple street. The latter went to Santa Monica as soon as he heard the sad news, and spent all night and part of yesterday searching [the beach in hopes that the body might be found, but up to 7 o'clock last night nothing had been heard of it]. Young Atkinson was a native of Michigan and came out here about three years ago. His parents are almost heart-broken over their loss. A Chicago Colony. F.W. Deethman leaves for Chicago next week to settle up his business affairs in that city. He received a letter from his brother some days ago, by which he was informed that an organization was being formed in Chicago of persons who desired to come to Anaheim to live. Mr. Deethman will doubtless do effective missionary work among his friends in that city, and be the means of inducing many to come here and share with him all the blessings of the glorious climate of California and other things. The following were drawn to serve as trial jurors to attend at the Superior Court at 10 A.M., April 15th: C.A. Beebe, A.A. Saunders, F.J. Barretto, M.L. Bridge, W.S. Young Atkinson was a native of Michigan and came out here about three years ago. His parents are almost heart-broken over their loss. A Transcontinental Railroad Association has established a new freight rate on angles, to go into immediate effect. Freelancers to St.Louis and New Orleans rate will be one dollar per hundred of 20,000 boxes, and all the crop is not yet gathered. Fifty years ago France imported only 200 tons of oranges per annum, one-third which were imported by way of Marseille. The total importation of oranges into France in 1884 amounted to about 50,000 tons, 4000 tons of which came from Spain. The imports from Algeria have risen from 7 tributions in 1836 to 5,000 tons in 1884—a fast while Frenchmen regard as another marvelous fact of the progress of their beautiful African colony. Oranges from Mexico are finding their way to Chicago by rail. Referring to the fact of California having taken the prize at the New Orleans Fair, the best display of citrus fruit, the Chronicle says: This was a special prize which was offered mainly to test the quality and variety of oranges sent in from various citrus-growing sections. The competition was lively as the decision was left to recognized experts so that it may be accepted as settling disputed question of the advantages of citrus bringing it all to the Fair in fine condition Louisiana had a creditable show; while both Jamaica and Mexico surpass expectations—the beauty of the fruit and the numbers varieties which they sent。它 began to look dark for California. The managers of it exhibited at the Fair sent out urgent appeal to the southern counties and the result was a carload of oranges and other citrus fruitswhich when put on exhibition carried first honors,a well as two gold medals eleven silver medals and thirty premiums. The value of these awards may appreciated from the facts given. The California exhibit has hurriedly gotten off it was forced to compete with fruit which had been brought by rail or water for much shorter distances. If oururers had not been so decidedly superior to those of Florida or Jamaica there would have been no show for carrying off the honors, based on course that we intended would be in favorof courses that we intended would be in favorof California exhibit was hurriedly gotten and it was forced to compete with friends which had been brought by rail or water for much shorter distances. If our organ had not been so decidedly superior to that of Florida or Jamaica there would have been no show for carrying off the honors; as Florida display was exceptionally fine, all of course the prejudice would be in favor of the fruit grown in the South. That our citizens came out at the head in such a competition is the best demonstration that can make of the resources of the State. Shuts the mouths of the Eastern critics who are fond of trying to prove that the Florida orange is the finest in the world. It is very best advertisement of the truth of claims. It is worth tens of circular letters and pamphlets; for the exhibit will seem by many thousands of people and report of the awards will be read in every part of the country. (Gentleman's Journal) For a year or more this city has been the scene of operations of Dr. Murray who is one of the fifth and most disguising equiment of a female to be found in the country, who has plied her profession as a deodorant, and has been before the courts for disorderly conduct and drunkenness. It has always been a mystery how such a republican, filthy creature could inspire enough confidence so as to secure a patient from either sex. For some time this woman has had medical charge of a patient from Arizona, by the name of H. Canton, who was here for treatment. She took her patient to 418 South Spring street, about the 30th of just month, where she kept him from communicating with other people so much as possible. Her patient, Canton, was in feasible health and a man about seventy years of age. When she found he had communicated with any one else she would fly into a rage and use the most abusive and vulgar language. She finally moved her patient to the Cleveland House and from there to the Southern Hotel. While at the first assumed house he wrote Rae Brothers, Mineral Park, Arizona, for money to be sent him here. Yesterday she was found in the rear end of a drug store, and on a complaint of Dr. Cross, arrested for disorderly conduct. At first she objected to the arrest but finally went to the police office and par up money for her appearance to-day. For some days it was feared she had made way with her patient. She had visited saloons and was in a heartily state of intoxication on Tuesday and exhibited several 20-dollar pieces, which were supposed to belong to her patient. It was found yesterday evening her patient was dead at the Southern Hotel, when his remains were taken to the undertaking parlors of Ponet & Orr. A warrant was sworn out for her arrest, when Captain Darcy arrested and placed her in jail. After she went to the jail she refused to communicate with any one and played either drunk or crazy.
