WEEKLY GAZETTE. Published every Saturday. Richard Metrose, EDITOR AND PROPRIETOR. TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION: One Year $2.00 Total months TRANSIENT ADVERTISING: HOUSEHOLD HINTS Iron rust may be removed from delicate garments, upon which you dare not try oxalic acid, by mixing the juice of a lemon with some salt; put this over the rusted spots and then hold over the spout of a steaming kettle. This is almost always effectual. A delicious salad is made by boiling new beets without scraping them. When they are tender, drop them in cold water, remove the skin, slice them, and put in a salad dish in layers, with slices of hard boiled eggs; season with pepper and salt; a little butter and vinegar. Graham biscuits are healthful and also very nice if eaten while fresh. The Newer Arithmetic. Detroit Free Press A woman placed four pounds of cold meat and eight slices of bread before a tramp. At the end of twenty minutes how much was left? A young man, by swearing off on cigars, tobacco and beer, saved thirty cents per day for six months. How many frog suppers would this give him at $8 per supper? If it costs $200 for a young lady to learn painting, and she turns out two landscapes worth 40 cents apiece, what is the net profit? An Indiana girl trapped 83 rabbits and sold them for 13 cents each. What was the sum total, and how much did she have left after buying her father a $10 overcoat. The average woman groans 125 times per hour when she suffers with the toothache, while the average man utters 35 cuss words every 70 seconds. At the end of three hours how far ahead will the woman be? A man in Richmond wound up an eight-day clock every night for 18 straight years. How much time, estimating three minutes for each wind, could he have put in hoeing corn had he known what sort of a clock he had? A certain shaft makes 645 revolutions per minute, and a young man is seized by the coat-tails and whirled around for 27 seconds. How many revolutions does he make? In a certain saloon are seven men. A woman is seen crossing the street, club in hand, and four of the seven men slip over the back fence. Two-thirds of the remainder are struck five times apiece by the club, and the other one-third is but three times. How many hits in all, including three A delicious salad is made by boiling new beets without scraping them. When they are tender, drop them in cold water, remove the skin, slice them, and put in a salad dish in layers with slices of hard boiled eggs; season with pepper and salt; a little butter and vinegar. Graham biscuits are healthful and also very nice if eaten while fresh and warm. To one pint of milk allow half a cup of melted butter, half a cup of sugar and two eggs; add enough flour to make a stiff battar; do not attempt to knead them, but drop from a spoon into hot muffin tins. If the paper which is put over jelly and jam is wet in the white of an egg, it will, when dry, be tight and firm, and keep the fruit from molding with much more certainty than if it is dipped in alcohol or brandy. The paper which is laid next the fruit is meant, not that which is tied or pasted over the glass. Here is something for the young mother who must tend baby and sew: Make a large square pillow, and for this hens' feathers will answer if the feathers of a goose are too expensive; cover it with bright-colored calico or bits of cretonne; when completed lay it on the floor and put baby on it on his stomach. He will amuse himself in many ways, and often learns his first lesson in creeping here. He will lie and pull or kick at the flowers on the carpet, and will kick and roll and gain strength in his limbs; and an occasional accident, caused by his getting too near the edge, will not affright a baby who has proper spirit and determination. Asparagus Soup.—Cut the tops from about thirty heads of asparagus, about half an inch long, and boil the rest; cut off all the tender portions and rub through a sieve, adding a little salt, warm three pints of soup stock, add a small lump of butter and a teaspoonful of flour previously cooked by heating the butter and slowly stirring in the flour; then add the asparagus pulp. Boil slowly a quarter of an hour, stirring in two or three tablespoonfuls of cream; color the soup with a teaspoonful of prepared spinach, made by pounding the spinations per minutes, and a young man is seized by the coat-tails and whirled around for 27 seconds. How many revolutions does he make? In a certain salon are seven men. A woman is seen crossing the street, club in hand, and four of the seven men slip over the back fence. Two-thirds of the remainder are struck five times apiece by the club, and the other one-third is but three times. How many hits in all, including three broken decanters? A man winks his eye an average of 30,000 times per day, and a woman's tongue makes 78,000 motions every 24 hours. At this rate how long will it take the man to catch up? How to Learn to Swim. Wade out until the water is up to your breast, then turn your face towards the shore, and try to swim towards it. You know that the water between you and the shore is not over your depth, as you have just waded through it; this will give you confidence to strike out. Confidence is a great help in learning. The chief use of the various aids in learning, the swimming plank, corks, or the presence of an older person, is to give the learner confidence. A plank a few feet long, on which the beginner can place one or both hands, is sometimes of use. Corks or life preservers of any kind, that are fastened to the body, we do not think much of. One needs but very little aid—in fact no aid—in order to keep his head above water, if he only has confidence. If an older brother or other friend will hold his hand in such a manner that you can rest your chin upon it, you can soon learn the proper movement of the arms and legs. Another method is to have a strap or band of webbing or other material around the chest, just under the arms. A few feet of stout cord has one end attached to the band, and the other end fastened to a light stout pole. In this manner a strong person can help the learner while standing on the land. The chief use of this contrivance is to give the beginner confidence. Those who undertake to aid a boy to swim should resist all temptation to play tricks. No matter how slight a ducking may be rest; cut off all the tender portions and rub through a sieve, adding a little salt, warm three pints of soup stock, add a small lump of butter and a teaspoonful of flour previously cooked by heating the butter and slowly stirring in the flour; then add the asparagus pulp. Boil slowly a quarter of an hour, stirring in two or three tablespoonfuls of cream; color the soup with a teaspoonful of prepared spinach, made by pounding the spinach well, adding a few drops of water, squeezing the juice through a cloth and putting it over a good fire. As soon as it looks curdy, take it off and strain the liquor through a sieve. What remains on the sieve is to be used for coloring the soup. Just before serving the soup add the asparagus tops which have been separately boiled. Tomato Soup.—Always use cold water in making all soups; skim well, especially during the first hour. There is great necessity for thorough skimming, and to help the scum rise, pour in a little cold water now and then, and as the soup reaches the boiling point, skim it off. Use salt at first sparingly, and season with salt and pepper; allow one quart of soup to three or four persons. For tomato soup allow one gallon of stock made from nice fresh beef to three quarts of fresh tomatoes; remove the skin and cut out the hard center, put through a fine sieve and add to the stock; make a paste of butter and flour, when the stock begins to boil, stir in half a teacup of the paste, taking care not to have it lumpy; boil twenty minutes, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste. Two quarts of the canned tomatoes will answer. "I assure you, gentlemen," said the convict, upon entering the prison, "that the place has sought me, and not I the place. My own affairs really demanded all my time and attention; and I may truly say that my selection to fill this place was an entire surprise. Had I consulted my own interest I should have peremptorily declined to serve; but as I am in the hands of my friends I see no other course but to submit." A Common Sense View of the Matter. An every day occurrence:—Blinker meets Flenkins, whose face is muffled up like a Laplander's, and the first thing he blugts out is "Got a sore face, eh? Been livin' too high, should be more moderate." Flenkins knew that as well as Blinker, but he wasn't more moderate and great pimples stood out on his face like door knobs. It would have been more charitable to have recommended Swayne's Ointment for skin diseases instead of volunteering useless advice. A Vexed Clergyman. Even the patience of Job would become exhausted were he a preacher and endeavoring to interest his audience while they were keeping up an incessant coughing, making it impossible for him to be heard. Yet, how very easy can all this be avoided by simply using Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds. Trial Bottles given away by W. M Higgins druggist. By the way this Ellery is a watch I sold to your Serew Bezel Case to a farmer last fall. The first of January he lost the watch in the woods, and found it this week in about one foot of water. He had fallen three months and over in snow and water with slight injury to the watch on his hand spring. C.S.
