MASSACHUSETTS has the credit of possessing the first establishment making a business off tanning human skin come the time of the French Revolution. "Carlie Rogers that during the reign of Terror a tannery for human pelts was opened in one of the cities of France."
Wurried from Rome on the Influenza, John S. Hirst says: "Nature's Financier not Italy have I seen a venture trained low as in California. The sunniest system of Italy is to have an elm or a peplum tree growing at the vine to serve as its support. The tree is trained like a letter by about six feet high, and the trunk is biped of the fuel every winter. As the tree grows more rapidly and sends out its roots to a greater distance than the vine, the latter suffers for nutrition and does not produce near so much fruit to the arce as types the vine in our state."
A San Joaquin farmer who took the advice of the newspapers and went into the culture of carp, his had a curious experience showing that even the most promising experiments may encounter unexpected obstacles. After this farmer had constructed large ponds and stocked them with fish, the neighbors took it into their heads that the ponds were productive of malaria, and he mandated that the water should be released from the artificial reservoirs which all together covered twenty acres of ground. The proprietor maintained that his ponds were filled with pure living water and would not cause malaria, but the insignificant neighbor after giving him for warning proceeded to blow up the gills of his reservoirs with giant powder.
A Phenomenal Singer.
When that grand, typical old Christian Paul gave utterance to his belief that "it is not meet that woman should speak in churches" he had substantial reasons for so believing. In that age, the position women occupied was not an elevated one, and their utterances on religion or any other subject could carry neither weight nor conviction with them so that St. Paul's interdict was at the time an eminently proper one. The intellectual advancement of women, however, has removed the cages which debarred them from assisting in the work of the Master, and it is not too much to say that without their energy, enthusiasm and help the statue of religion would be immutely below what it now is.
The close observer will note that there is a disposition late to abandon the stereotyped programme which for fifty years or more has contained in churches and which had grown unbelievably monotonous. The religion and the religious observances of the past were glossy, repellent and forbidding; at the present they are cheerful, attractive and interesting, and whatever church presents the most varied and interesting services has upon its rolls the largest membership and greatest number of visitors. It is just as well for church managers to recognize these facts and take advantage of the lesson they convey.
These thoughts were suggested by learning of the magnitude which flocked to the Presbyterian church in Los Angeles last Sunday, in response to the announcement that the door would be reinforced by Miss Mary A. Lester, whose fame as a singer had preceded her. Who will say that the lady, in contributing her God given talent to attract people to His temple, was not doing as effective work as any of His ministers? The inherent love of music implanted in people can be made a power to draw them where they will perform be compelled to listen to the teaching of the expounders of the word.

Witness allda and Aabon jallat are having a temporary bridge plants, the Fresno Expedition speaks up for a new grass, which it says is the equal Father, via a lance. It was that the grass, although an annual will, with the same care that he bestowed on allda, would more and better lay every season than it. It cut and watered it will give as many crops per season at the allda, and it will be on hand with a good crop of feed canner in the spring than any other grass. Its ability to stand drought was never made thoroughly tested than during the present season in Presidio. While all the other native grasses were completely dried out, the allda struggled along, and when the rains came at the onset of March, it sprang up and is now covering the ground with a luxurious carpet of green, affording good feed to the cattle and sheep.
As illustrative of the risks attitude in which individuals or communities think themselves by going off "shallocked," as the phrase is, the case of the people of Arizona. In an Agent Wilcox, may be quoted. Two men were killed by Indians. Continued outrages by the Indians had followed the people of the Territory, and when it was rumored that Wilcox had telegramged a version of the affair to Washington in which he illuded to the murder man as "deprenders" a head of rage went up from one end of the Territory to the other. Whoso was denounced in mass meeting, threatened with violence, and figuratively annihilated. Now that the indignation is somewhat stated, Mr. Wilcox makes public the following telegram as the one which gave such mortal offense:
To Price Commissioner at Washington-San Carlos Agency, March 27th, 1836. Two white men repelled killed yesterday near the Upper Gilpin come handed over here; by Indians from Old Mexico, repented by me as depressing new Winchester on the 23d. I still think they are trying to reach the reservation for the purpose of carrying off squaws and inducing other Indians to join them. There are nearly four thousand and Indians in the vicinity of the agency, contented and friendly as I have ever seen them. There is not the slightest sign of trouble or intention to receive the hostiles except as enemies.
It will be seen that the term "deprendants" was applied to the Indians instead of to their victims, so that the fury of the people was entirely uncalled for. Some of the men who made themselves conscious in striving Mr. Wilcox must feel rather
Miss Lester has a phenomenal voice, and its clear, pure sweet tone were eminently appropriate for sacred music. The congregation were entranced during her condition of her well chosen solos, and her gleubut was the most successful of any of the somewhat tenuous singers who had preceded her. Such indeed is the prophecy of Herr Mueller, from under whose tutelage she has that later congrudged Heavy's that in compass purity and power of control her voice is beyond all question far ahead of any pupil who ever graduated from his school. We hope Miss Lester will visit Anaheim and give our music loving people the pleasure of listening to her.
Cemetery Suggestions.
Entrance Gazette. Will those having authority in the management of the cemetery allow a suggestion or two from an occasional visitor? In the first place, the approach to it from the main road has been sadly marred by plowing up the sides and leaving them without a subsequent harrowing in a very rough state; with weeds starting up in abundance, and altogether unsightly. And secondly, that windmill needs looking after. It has become so clogged with castor oil probably and dust that a moderate breeze will not make it pump any water. And more than that, there was no oil can there to day of any kind, or it would have received some gratitudes aid, as the writer with at least one other visitor, were anxious to get water for the grass and shrubs in their respective plots; but the tank was empty, caused as a search revealed, by want of due care on the part of another lot owner in not having phloxy turned off the water from their hydrant when they last used it, but left a small stream running, much to the disapointment of those who had come two or three miles to refresh their parched plots as aforetime. Our interest in that sacred spot is a common one and each visitor should remember his or her obligations to others.

Sunday School Convention.
The State Sunday School Convention met this week in Los Angeles, holding its sessions in the commissions Methodist church on Fort street, which was filled at every session. The first meeting on Tuesday evening was the occasion for an excellent and eloquent sermon on the Holy Spirit by Dr. Beckwith of San Francisco, which gave the key note to all subsequent meetings for it became evident in the discussion of all points of the Sunday School work which were taken up, such as "Methods of District work, Institutes, etc." "Giving the object and method." "How to retain the young people in our schools," "S. S. agency in Mission work," "Temperance," "Sabbath observance," "S. S. Normal work," etc., that without the presence and aid of the Holy Spirit, as promised by Christ before his ascension, it is vain to look for progress in religious work of any kind.
The clerical talent of the State was largely drawn upon, and all agree that no more useful and agreeable convention had been held in the sixteen years of the California Sunday School Association.
A great compliment was paid California by the President of the Massachusetts Congregational Sunday School Association who arrived during the session, and after observing the method and spirit of the Convention declared the east had much to learn from the west, even in these things in which New England was supposed to be pre-eminent.
Anaheim, Orangethorpe, Westminster, Garden Grove, Orange and Santa Ana were well represented by those who in the main preferred to listen rather than speak.
Taxpayers' Ticket.
Dr. GAZETTE — It may suit the sense of humor of some of our younger fellow citizens to make light of the municipal election, but people who pay taxes have too deep an interest in the matter to allow their humorous proclivities to get the better of their judgment. Believing that the gentlemen named in the following ticket will fulfill their respective duties impartially, we present it to the public and ask that the ticket be supported at the election on Monday:
For Trustees — J. P. Zeyn, E. A. Saxton, Frank Ey, W. Kouin, F. Backs.
Treasurer — P. James.
Clerk — E. H. Newbold.
Assessor — C. H. Zeyn.
Marshal — E. A. Pullen.
Justice of the Peace — Alexander Bailey.
The Los Angeles Herald has the following notice of Sherman's Circus, which will perform here next Monday:
The performance was simply immense, as was evinced by the long and constant applause of the large numbers of spectators present. The trained horses, Tommy and Barney, performed their tricks better than ever before, and seemed to be endowed with human intelligence, while the popular clown horse Jack, was as contrary in his manner as could be desired. The two clowns kept the audience in a roar with their wit, which was always refined, while Mr. French was waconly encored in his song, "La-de-dah."
William Gorman, the champion hurdle rider, well known here, excelled himself in his remarkable specialties, while the acrobatic feats of the three Morocco brothers showed much practice, and were, if anything, a better exhibition of skill than on their former visit. Miss Ethee DeRock, the lady with the iron jaw, was as good as usual, while Little Gloria the child wonder, rode better than ever, and was watched with great attention. The tumbling was exceedingly good, as in fact, was the entire performance, the acts of which were applauded to the echo.
The savage but deserved criticism of Roggs, the Inspector of Fruit Pests who was elected by the Horticultural Commissioners, has had the effect of causing him to resign his position, and Dr. Chapin has been elected in his stead.

A Destructive Cyclone.
New Orleans, April 23d.—A frightful cyclone passed over Wesson and the town of Beauregard, (Mississippi) a mile above, about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The wind for the past three days has been blowing a gale, with lowering clouds. Its approach was known some minutes before by deep, rumbling sounds. Windows in dwellings shock violently, and many thought it an earthquake. The thunder and ignition were terrified. Pences were torn down, trees probed and cast a hundred yards away. East of the railroad the damage was light but in the western portion of the town the destruction was awful in its character. One peach orchard struck was lunch with a large number of houses in which the operatives of the Mississippi Mills were domiciled. Here the greatest destruction occurred. The graves of the wounded beneath the ruins were appalling. The buildings were torn to atoms. A pine forest just beyond was blown out of existence. The work of removing the dead and extirping the wounded from the ruination began. Calvin Reed, living in the vicinity, died from the exertion. The estimated number killed is twelve. Two or three children are missing. Twenty houses were down down. The number of people with broken limbs is estimated by physicians at seventy-five. The house is appearing in Beauregard. The town is literally a mass of ruins. It is with difficulty one can ride through so thickly are trees strewn across the roads. Not a space of building of any character is standing in the place. Tenders are scattered for miles around even out in the country; two and a half miles from the city, dwellings are swept.
The latest reports received show 83 persons killed and about 500 wounded, many dangerously. The loss of property is unprecedented.

The Record Union says of the disaster which happened in Sacramento last week: "About twice a clock last night a fire broke out to the kitchen of the Camp Restaurant, on the north side of K street, between Fifth and sixth streets, and under Grand Army Hall. A few minutes afterward the western wall of the hall fell outward, falling on the roof of a museum building occupied by Zingler & Hitzlerger as a saloon, and known as 'Sanga Hall,' which caused the roof to fall in, carrying everything into the basement. The place has always been a resort for musicians, and a large crowd, including several members of the First Artillery band, were in the saloon. The number is variously estimated at from twenty to forty. The Fire Department responded promptly to the alarm of fires, and after extinguishing the fire turned their attention to those buried in the debris. Many of those who were standing near to the wall on either side were removed with but little difficulty; some fifteen or eighteen were taken out in this way more or less injured. Near the centre of the building the debris fell clear to the ground. The killed are John Hittzenberger, A. Selavonia, Thomas C. Beolember, Henry Kolfe, Lawrence R. Müller, C. Rademacher, Henry Schwitzer.
Good Advice.
Stop grabbing; get up an hour earlier in the morning; attend to your own business; and with all your might let other people alone. Live within your means; and stop going security. Eat with moderation and go bed early. Talk less about your own peculiar gifts and virtues and more of those of your friends and neighbors. Speak kindly to the stranger or let him entirely alone. Read up the 9th commandment. Finish your promises and pay your debts. Be yourself what you require of others; and above all don't try to expose the faults of your neighbors in a crowd. Be a good man; come two Utah Newborn passenger trains. Can not learn that any one was seriously hurt. A shaking hand at night is broken tree and several buildings damaged. The snow greeves here and fruit trees are blown down. The Union Parish traps are in time today.

Good Advice.
Stop grabbing; get up an hour earlier in the morning, attend to your own business, and with all your might let other people alone. Live within your means, and stop going security. Eat with moderation and go to bed early. Talk less about your own peculiar gifts and vintages and more of those of your friends and neighbors. Speak kindly to the stranger or let him entirely alone. Read up the 9th commandment. Fulfill your promises and pay your debts. Be yourself what you require of others, and above all don't try to expose the faults of your neighbors in a crowd. Be a good man; come to Anaheim as soon as you can and buy a place of D.W. Hubbard and your drooping spirit will receive and make you continually cheerful and happy.

Mormon Proselytes.
New York, April 25. On Monday 530 Mormons arrived in the steamship Aroton on route to Utah. They were met by one Cian Migration Agent for New York. One citizen that thirty are from Denmark, Sweden and Norway, while the rest another English, Scottish and Welsh. Their leader said: "We have now about three hundred Mormons who have not the means to enqage." Four in residence are expected to arrive during the summer. One of the leaders said: "In England we neither preach nor practice polygamy. The authorities do not interfere with us. It has been repeatedly urged on Gladstone that he ought to take measures for our suppression, but he always gives the answer of a trip statesman, that as long as we respect the law he has no right to interfere. Evans's circular was received with great contempt, both in England and France. In Germany we have disbanded, although we were making great headway there. We were also owed to desist for a long time in Sweden, but now that country is our best friend. In Turkey we have had but little success, and but small in France and Italy. Spain we have not attempted. In America the people are our worst enemy.

Unless it had great merit Parker's Ginger Toine could not be so popular. Its sale has spread remarkably everywhere, because invalids find it gives them new life and vigor when other medicines fail entirely—Ohai Farmers.
