A Cornfield Protected by Rattlesnakes.
An octogenarian, of Dresden, had been troubled, during corn-planting time, by the crows stealing the corn planted. The usual resort to scarecrows was a failure even, and nothing seemed to keep them away. One day old Rube Davis, the late famous rattlesnake man of Lake George, was making a visit to the Dresdenite. The latter was telling old Rube of his trouble with the crows, when the rattlesnake man asked what the Dresdenite would give him if he would furnish protection to his corn.
A sum was named, which old Rube accepted and took his departure, promising to be on hand the next corn-planting time. Nothing was thought of it until the next season, when old Rube put in an appearance.
He took from his pocket six live rattlesnakes, which he handled with as much freedom as if they had been kittens.
The old fellow then asked when corn was to be planted, and, being informed that the job would be finished that very day, he paired to the cornfield. There he made six little houses or dens, covering them with flat stones. These dens were situated in different parts of the cornfield. The cawing of the crows could be heard, the birds seeming to be on the watch for the men's departure. Old Rube then placed a snake in each little den, uttering words to the reptiles, which he always said they could understand, the men left the field.
They had scarcely passed through the opening in the stump fence before the air was filled with crosses, all bound on a foraging expedition. The men watched the result at a distance. Down went the crows into the cornfield, when the work of slaughter began. The snakes set thredens and cautiously approaching bushes, their eyes soon...

The inscription on the front of the late Gen. Albert Sidney Joanston, the rebel leader, killed at Shiloh, April 6, 1862, and buried at Galveston, Tex., has been pronounced by many as fine a bit of graveyard rhetoric as exists in the English language. It is as follows:
Behind this stone is laid, for a season,
ALBERT SIDNEY JOANSTON,
A General in the Army of the Confederate States,
Who to Tal Mitch, Tennessee,
On the sixth day of April,
Eighteen hundred and sixty-two,
A man tried in many high offices
And critical enterprises,
And found faithful in all;
His life was one long Sacrifice of Interest to Conscience:
A even that life, on a wonderful Sabbath,
Did he yield as a Hookstail at his country’s need.
Not wholly understood was he while he lived;
But, in his death, his Greatness stands confessed
In a People’s tears.
I exulte, moderate, clear of envy, yet not wanting
in that finer ambition which makes men great and pure;
In his Honor—Impremable;
In his Simplicity—Subtle;
No Country ever had a Lover Son—No Cause a nobler Champion;
No people a holder Defender—No Principle a purer Vetitin.
Than the dead Soldier
Who keeps here:
The Cause for which he perished to lost—
The People for whom he fought are crushed—
The Pos in which he trusted are shattered—
The Flag he loved guides no more the charging lines;"
But his fame, consigned to the Keeping of that Time which,
Happily, is not so much the Tomb of Virtue as its Shrine,
Shall in the years to come fire Modest Worth to No-ble Ends.
In honor, now, our great Captain rests;
A bereaved People mourn him;
Three Commonwealths proudly claim him,
and history shall cherish him.
Among those Choice Spirits was, holding their Conscience unmixed with blame,
Have been in all Conjunctures true to themselves,
their People and their God.
"Had Rather be Kicked."
Physicians frequently send patients to take riding lessons, particularly persons whose occupations are of a sedentary character. One stout, red-faced merchant, a little past middle age, who was so recommended by his doctor, came up to try the prescription one morning last autumn. He had not been on a horse since he was a boy, he said. They put him on an easy-going, tractable horse, and he jogged about the ring for one hour faithfully. Then he dismounted stiffly, with many primaces and a few pithy remarks, waddled into the office, and declared himself. "That," said he, "lets me out. I can get exactly the same results for half the money and in half the time, by hiring my porter to kick me."—Exchange.

SACRAMENTO CITY, CA.
Dr. R. J. Kendall & Co. Genits Having used a good deal of your Kendall's Spavin Cure with great success I think it would let you know what it has done for me. Two years ago I found a sweet coil as was ever raised to Jefferson county. When I was breaking him he sliced over the grass bar and got fast and torrents of his blood all to pierce a emplaced the best farmer, but they all said he was spilled. He had a very large through pin, and I used two bottles of your Kendall's Spavin Cure, and it took the lunch shortly off, and he said afterwards for $500 (dollars). I have asked it for bone spavine and wind galls and it has always curled completely and left the log smooth.
It is a splendid medicine for thematism. I have recommended it to a good many and they all say it does the work. I saw in Witherington & Kendall's drug store, so admire the other day and saw a very fine picture you sent them. I tried to buy it but could not; they said if I would write to you that you would send one very. I wish you would, and I will do you all the good I can.
Very respectfully.
