WEEKLY GAZETTE SATURDAY. FEB. 10, 1883 Kleinigkeiten. This is, indeed, "the winter of our discontent." The February schedule of the P.C.S.R. Co., is published today. The Board of Town Trustees met Wednesday, but aside from transacting the routine business nothing was done. The remains of the five unidentified bodies, relics of the Tehachepdi disaster, were interred at the cemetery at Los Angeles by the S.P.E.R. Co. The Commercial has changed owners, it having been sold by W.H. Gould to B.A. Stephens, who proposes to publish it as a Republican newspaper. Two cargoes of lumber have already been received by Messrs Saxton & Cox at their new lumber yard at Orange, and more is on the way. S. Doninguez, the gentleman who stole two horses from the Sears settlement, a couple of months ago has been sent to San Quentin for two years. The average temperature for the week ending on Wednesday was 42 degrees. This is the lowest weekly average in ten years with one exception from December 18th to 24th, 1874, the average was 42 degrees. Inquiries Answered. J. Vostrovsky, a merchant of Nebraska who has sold out his business, and for reasons of health must migrate to a warmer climate, asks the Gazette to answer the following questions: Can a man lend money easy in your place on first class security? What interest? Or, in another way, can a family consisting of five persons, having their own residence, live moderately well on the interest of twenty thousand dollars? What is the cost of a good house of 8 or 9 rooms, with good sized lot or garden? Is the drinking water good and healthy in Anaheim? Do any fevers exist in your place? What is the highest temperature? To these questions we reply. There is generally a demand for money, and the securities offered are good. Interest ranges at present from eight to ten per cent per annum. Sums of under $1000 command 12 per cent per annum. The interest on $20,000 at 8 per cent gives a yearly income of $1600; an amount sufficient to provide more than moderately well for a family of five persons. The necessities of life are as cheap here as in Nebraska. A house and lot of the kind described could be had for from $2500 to $3000. The water supplied by the town corporation for domestic use is remarkably clear and pure, devoid of all deleterious mineral matter; and being raised from a depth of one hundred feet, none of the pernicious vegetable matter percolates into it, as is the case with so-called surface wells. The purity of the drinking water here is a matter in which our people pride themselves. A severe case of fever is a rare thing here. There is no place in California where less fever prevails than in Anaheim. As relating to this subject we direct our correspondent's attention to an article on "Drainage and Irrigation" in the Gazette of last week, a copy of which we send him. In answer to the query as to temperature, Ed. Gazette—A number of signatures rounds the past few Legislature to disincorporate as the sole and ap- reason that we are owing city of keeping up the natural concomitants police and road repair. Admitting that our town of a debt which growing—now the town should we throw over given us by our charge expense of another year a tax of one half or one per cent., and this tion which is not over amount? Our people canvassers for this plea of heavy tax and turns, ignoring the fact means retrogression that we are not near munity as we have been ourselves. It me town marshal to arrease law to keep any demijohn from opening liquor to Indians; no bblers from setting up walk or in any roo hire. No law by we kept in order; no office that dead horses moved from the road responsible for the keeper on side streets; streets in order, or weekly from our ppl Nothing to keep the gales who are being laws from settling miserable vocation mist. Nothing to under the town laws with rich from roo S. Doningnez, the gentleman who stole two horses from the Sears settlement a couple of months ago has been sent to San Quentin for two years. The average temperature for the week ending on Wednesday was 42 degrees. This is the lowest weekly average in ten years with one exception from December 18th to 24th, 1874, the average was 42 degrees. The Southern California Packing Company received a large supply of tomato seed yesterday with which to sow forty acres of land distributed in small tracts through the county. They expect to have ripe tomatoes for canning next August. Times. A numerously signed petition has been sent to the Legislature from this part of the County, asking that body to enact a statute making it a penal offence for any person to have, maintain or keep bees in or within two miles of any fruit district. In taking the agency for Messrs Devlin & Co., the merchant tailors of New York, Goodman & Rimpau have "struck it rich," as the phrase goes. They take orders for auits every day. They have a couple of hundred samples in which every customer can find something to suit him. The shipments from the depot for the week ending February 8 were smaller than usual: In small lots, 37,190 lbs; 48 sacks wool, 16,830 lbs; 28 pipes wine, 14,260 lbs; 19 bbla wine, 7,400 lbs; 1 car lumber, 20,000 lbs; 1 car shakes, 33,333 lbs; 109 bales hay, 21,750 lbs; total, 150,763 lbs. Just before going to press we learn that Rev. Mr. Jacobus, pastor of the Congregational Church in Westminster, was lying at the point of death yesterday morning. He is a man greatly beloved by all who know him, and his family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. Mr. F. Conrad has just finished cutting down the eucalypt trees in front of the Tivoh Garden. From sixty trees he obtained twelve cords of logs, besides several cords of smaller wood. The logs are worth $7 per cord for use in the breweries or distilleries. The trees were eight years old and planted seven feet apart. J. Y. Creighton, a stranger, was found dead in the rear court yard of the Pico House at Los Angeles, on Tuesday, with his skull fractured and his left arm broken. It is surmised that crazed with drink or drugs, he leaped from the window of his room in the third story. Creighton is from Portland, Oregon. Church Notes. The Rev. S. Gregory Lines will preach at St. Michael's church to morrow and administer the Holy Communion. Services at Hockenback. Mr. Lines was the rector of St. Luke's church, San Francisco, one of the strong parishes in that city. His health failing, he was obliged to resign this past summer, and after spending a few months in the East he returned last fall and established an Associate Mission in San Bernardino county, where he and the Rev. Mr. Reid hold regular services at San Bernardino, Riverside and Colton. He is an earnest and successful worker, and an eloquent speaker. LOS ANGELES MARKETS. Corrected weekly for the Gazettes by E. Up to this time the electric light has proved a great success. In addition to the masts there are forty-two lamps lighting the several stores and saloons, and orders are being put in daily for more. Mr. Howland intends sending at once for another dynamo machine, as the two at the works are doing all the generating they are equal to.—L. A. Herald. Doctor Fellows yesterday showed us a novelty in the form of a cane made from the root of an alfalfa plant. This remarkable root was seven-eighths of an inch in diameter at the top and three-eighths in diameter at the other end, making a walking stick of three feet in length with lateral roots for a handle. This cane illustrates the great productivity of the soil when grass roots grow to walking sticks.—Commercial. In Los Angeles on Saturday, Walter S. Moore was shot in the hand by John Robarts, an attorney. Robarts was in a barber shop in which also was Thomas Ocampo. The latter applied an offensive epithet to Robarts who warned him not to repeat it. The warning being unheeded, Robarts drew his pistol and fired at Ocampo, and at that moment Col. Moore rushed forward and grasped the pistol, receiving the bullet in his hand. The wound is painful but not dangerous. Mr. Tim Carroll has in nursery form some five or six hundred thousand eucalyptus and cypress trees, which he planted in anticipation of a wet season and a consequent large demand for trees. The late frosts have damaged the blue gum trees to some extent but have not touched the cypress. Should agrain come even two or three weeks later, Mr. Carroll is confident of being able to sell every tree in his nursery, as inquiries have been frequent. Thermometrical Record. Ed. Gazette—A paper with a large number of signatures has been going the rounds the past few days, petitioning the Legislature to disincorporate our town, giving as the sole and apparently only possible reason that we are overtaxed by the necessity of keeping up the organization and its natural concomitants—water, fire apparatus, police and road repairing. Admitting that our tax was pretty high the past year—made necessary to rid the town of a debt which had been gradually growing—now the town is out of debt, why should we throw overboard the privileges given us by our charter, when the whole expense of another year can easily be met by a tax of one half or probably one quarter of one per cent., and that on a property valuation which is not over one third its actual amount? Our people have been met by the canvassers for this petition with the one plea of heavy tax and no commensurate returns, ignoring the fact that disincorporation means retrogression—an acknowledgment that we are not nearly as advanced a community as we have been proud of proclaiming ourselves. It means we are to have no town marshal to arrest disorderlies, no license law to keep any man who can carry a demijohn from opening a saloon and peeling liquor to Indians; no town law to keep gamblers from setting up a laro bank on the side walk or in any room they may choose to hire. No law by which Chinatown can be kept in order; no officer whose duty it is to see that dead horses, dogs and cats are removed from the roads and byways. No one responsible for the keeping of bridges in repair on side streets. No one to keep the streets in order, or to remove the rubbish weekly from our principal thoroughfares. Nothing to keep the lewd women of Los Angeles who are being driven out by the city laws from settling here and plying their miserable vocation untrammeled in our midst. Nothing to keep the tramps who under the town laws have given Anaheim a wild birth from running our streets at will. Board of Supervisors. Monday, Feb. 5th, 1883.
