This well-known mineral, which consists of silicate of magnesia and water, part of which is bygroscopic and part chemical combined water, is chiefly obtained, says the Industrie Zieitung, from near the city of Eskisehir, in Asia Minor, where it was mined on a large scale even before the time of the Turks. The city is surrounded by a basin, or depression, which was in all probability a large lake, now dried up. All around the borders of this basin are found mass- HOUSEHOLD HINTS: VENISON PATTIES.—Cut cold roast venison into dice, and heat about a pint of it in half a pint of thickened gravy. Or season it any way you choose and moisten it with wine; then stir it over the fire until scalding hot. Fill pate-shells, and serve hot as possible. TUTTI-FRUTTI.—To one quart of boiled custard (flavored with vanilla) allow a quart of candied fruits, assorted and chopped, and a gill of maraschino. Freeze the custard, and when it is beginning to set in the freezer, stir in the fruit, maraschino, and a pint of cream, whipped. Mould. RUM SHERBET.—Rub loaf sugar over the rinds of three fresh oranges. To three quarts of water add the juice of a dozen large oranges; sweeten to taste with loaf sugar (using also the flavored sugar.) flavor highly with rum, and freeze. Grated pineapple may be added when it is partly frozen, if liked. CELERY SOUR.—Boil a small cup of rice in three pints of milk until it will pass through a sieve. Grate the white part of three heads of celery on a bread grater; add this to the milk after it has been strained; put to it a quart of strong veal stock; let it boil till the celery is very tender. Season with salt and cayenne pepper, and serve. BOILED BEETS AND CARROTS.—When small beets are boiled and cut consists of silicate of magnesia and water, part of which is bygroscopic and part chemical combined water, is chiefly obtained, says the Industrie Zetting, from near the city of Eskisehir, ip Asia Minor, where it was mined on a large scale even before the time of the Turks. The city is surrounded by a basin, or depression, which was in all probability a large lake, now dried up. All around the borders of this basin are found masses of meerschaum mixed with pebbles and bowlders in a sort of red earth. The stratum forms an angle of 45° with the hill. Between every two strata of pebbles, which are sometimes interrupted by a stratum of earth, there is found a layer of meerschaum. The meerschaum frequently envelops a block of gravel or piece of quartz rock. The blocks of meerschaum when first mined are wet and dirty, and to fit them for export they must have the earthy crust removed and be dried, polished, and refined. The refining of a lot of one hundred chests requires two months' work on the part of twelve or fifteen persons, and costs about 1200 florins ($690). The average price at Eski-Scherir for a chest of merchantable ware has varied since 1873 between 150 and 250 francs, and last year (1881) it was 161 francs ($32.20), while the refuse, fit only for converting into a plastic mass, could be had for 23 to 35 francs. Ten qualities of meerschaum are recognized, and each is to be had of four different sized pieces. A chest 30 inches long, 8 inches wide, and 154 inches deep will hold from 25 to 40 of the largest sized masses, 100 to 150 of the second size, 200 to 250 of third size, and 450 to 650 of the smallest. In the last two decades the exportation of meerschaum has varied considerably; amounting to only 3000 chests in 1855, and rising to 9500 in 1870; in 1875 it fell to $300, and rose again to 11,100 in 1881. This quantity is handled by fifteen firms in Constantinople, comprising Austrians, Bulgarians, Greeks, Armenians and Türks. These send their ware to branch houses or consignees in Vienna, which is the only established market for this article. These send their ware to branch houses or consignments in Vienna, which is the only established market for this article. Vienna's immense importation of meerschaum dates from the middle of the year 1850, when the production of pipes and cigar holders received an immense impetus from the exportation to England, France and America. At the beginning of 1860 a considerable export of pipes to San Francisco began, while at the same time large quantities of cigar holders were sent to Australia and America via Hamburg. Since then the conditions have changed, for the introduction of this article into America has been checked by high tariff duties. By the aid of Austrian workmen that have emigrated thither, an industry has been founded in America which competes successfully with the Vienna pipe manufacturers, of which America was formerly the largest customer. The United States, like France and Germany, obtain most of their raw material from Austria. Siegfried Adler, in a recent book on Constantinople and its neighborhood, says that for the last ten years there has been a steady decline in the meerschaum business, part of which is attributable to an unstable currency in the place where it is found. Since 1850 eighty-two people have thrown themselves from the Vendome column in Paris. You can never rely upon an echo. Does not Shakespeare speak of the cave where Echo lies? Drouth in New England. Boston, Jan. 12. As the effects of the prolonged drouth in Manchester, N.H., 2000 operatives are idle. The mills are shutting down. The product of the Maine sawmills have been reduced 20,000,000 feet. The rivers are lower than for half a century. The mills on the Penobscot lose over $100,-000. The establishments on the Kennebec, Androscoggin and Saco are likewise crippled. In southeastern Maine hundreds of persons have been compelled to resort to snow-water, and cattle have been driven miles to ponds and brooks. The Merrimac river is lower than ever before. The great mills at Nashua and Great Falls, besides those at Manchester, are running on half to two-thirds time, and the loss to employers and employees is enormous. It is impossible to aggregate the loss. The rainfall for 1882 throughout the region is barely half an average. There was no January thaw. Bucklen's Arnica Salve. Kendall & Co., Gentle Having used a good deal of your Kendall's Spavin Cure with great success, I thought I would let you know what it has done for me. Two years ago I had as speedily a colt as ever raised in Jefferson County. When I was breaking him, he kicked over the cross bar and got fast and hard one of his kind legs all to piece. I employed the best tractors, but they all said he was special. He had a very large thorough-pin, and I used two bottles of your Kendall's Spavin Cure, and it took the tunnels entirely off, and he sold afterwards for seven dollars. He used it for home spavins and bed gals, and it has always curved completely and left gorgeous smooth. It is a specialized machine for rheumatism. I have recommended it to a good many, and they all say it does work well. I was in Wratherington & Kineland's drug store in Adelaide, the other day and saw a very fine picture you sent them.
