WEEKLY GAZETTE SATURDAY MAY 7, 1891 Kleinigkeiten. Geo. W. Barter, formerly of Anaheim, is preparing a directory of Tucson. A general meeting of the shareholders in the Anaheim Water Company will be held at half past three o'clock this afternoon. The American Cash Store advertises a new price list to-day. They keep marking their goods down lower and lower. One (or rather two) of the incidents of the picnic at Santiago Canyon on last Sunday was the killing of a couple of rattle snakes on the picnic ground. Wm. C. Bassett of Santa Monica had his hand crushed last week while moving a house. Lockjaw resulted and he died on last Saturday. The Riverside Press says: P. Ainsworth of Orange, who had a box of raisins on exhibition last fall at Roe & Co.'s store, netted $2 25 per box for his crop of that quality. The programme for the next meeting of Anaheim Lodge, A. O. U. W. is as follows: Reading, H. A. Stough; Declamation, Charles Hilmer; Reading, Dr. R. A. Fergusson; Song, B. F. Seibert. On Friday night of last week a man named Cummins fell from a wagon on Center Street and the wheels passed over him, breaking four of his ribs. His injuries were attended to by Dr. Fergusson. The 8 to 12 club will give a necktie and apron party on the evening of the 28th instant. The members of the club will please pay their dues to the Bank of Anaheim before the 20th instant. ANAHEIM SCHOOL DISTRICT. The following statistics in regard to property in Anaheim School District are compiled from the District Assessor's books: Value of Real Estate other than town lots.....$120,299 Value of Improvements thereon...20,095 Value of Town Lots...42,800 Value of Improvements thereon...74,955 Value of Improvements on Town Lots assessed to persons other than the owners of Lots...2,150 Value of Personal Property...124,962 Total valuation of Property in District.....$404,261 There are in the District 6153 acres of land, exclusive of town lots. The average assessed value of this land is $19.55 per acre. The Board of School Trustees met on Saturday and fixed the tax levy at 35 cents on the $100 valuation. This will give a revenue of $1,414 91. The tax is now due and payable to Richard Melrose, Tax Collector, at the Gazette office. Mr. J. M. Guinn has been appointed Census Marshal for this School District. The election for School Trustee will be held on the first Saturday in June. The schools will close for the summer vacation on Friday, June 3d. The newly-elected Board of Town Trustees met on Monday in accordance with the requirements of Section 6 of the charter, and organized by electing Mr. B. Dreyfus as President by a unanimous vote. Oh assuming the chair President Dreyfus announced the appointment of the following standing committees: Ordinance Committee—D. W. C. Cowan, F. A. Korn and D. W. Fish. Finance Committee—F. A. Korn, D. E. Miles and D. W. Fish. Committee on Public Improvements—D. E. Miles, B. Dreyfus and D. W. C. Cowan. The Board then adjourned until Wednesday at 4 p.m., when the regular monthly session was held. The members of the club will please pay their dues to the Bank of Anaheim before the 20th instan'. Fox-tail grass is so abundant on the fields this year that it excites remark. It has never asserted itself so prominently heretofore, and much speculation is indulged in as to why it should now grow so rank. It appears, also, that it is unusually 'plentiful this year in other parts of the State. The trial of Miss Lastania Abarta for the murder of "Chico" Forster was finished on Saturday. The jury rendered a verdict of not guilty, after consulting about one hour. When they first retired they stood 2 for conviction and 10 for acquittal. The defense was insanity, and it was established by the evidence of medical experts. A curious case of transmutation of grain is reported at the San Gabriel Mission. Mr. Smith, who owns the former Jesse Avise place, last fall sowed a field with Odessa wheat, but behold! when he looked to find wheat there came up oats, and he has now a rich crop of oats where nothing but wheat was sown. He is mystified at the transmutation and is likely to believe in metempsychosis. Jesus Baliza, a Sonoranian woman, was committed to the Insane Asylum by Judge Howard yesterday. Her insanity was caused by religious hallucination and physical changes. One form of her aberration is that she claims to hold daily interviews with God, whom she describes as a handsome American. The devil, she says, is of mixed origin, his mother having been an Italian and his father a Frenchman. During the past three years Los Angeles has sent 108 persons to the State Prison. Of this number 42 were Mexican or Indian and two were Chinamen. Two were sentenced for life, and the average sentence of the others was about two and a half years. The State supports constantly about 100 convicts for Los Angeles county and of this number about 5 belong to that part of the county south of new river—or, in other words, Orange county. An order has been issued from the Adjutant-General's office disbanding the Los Angeles Guards. It appears that the number of inmates in the prison has fallen below F. A. Korn and D. W. Fish. Finance Committee—P. A. Korn, D. E. Miles and D. W. Fish. Committee on Public Improvements—D. E. Miles, B. Dreyfus and D. W. C. Cowan. The Board then adjourned until Wednesday at 4 P.M., when the regular monthly session was held. The Committee on Public Improvements were instructed to investigate the alleged obstruction at the corner of Broadway and Palm streets. The special committee on the Broadway ditch recommended that the whole subject be indefinitely postponed. The recommendation was adopted by the Board. The ordinance to establish the width of sidewalks and to encourage the planting of trees on the outer edge of such sidewalks, was referred to the Committee on Ordinance for investigation. A numerously-signed petition was presented, asking the Board to erect a public watering trough, and suggesting the vacant lot near the corner of Los Angeles and Center streets as a suitable location, the owners having agreed to let the lot be used for that purpose. The matter was referred to the Committee on Public Improvements, with power to take any action they might deem necessary. The Board are unanimous in favor of the project, but they desire if possible to secure a small lot upon which to erect a drinking fountain that shall be ornamental as well as useful. Any citizen who desires to make a gift of a small piece of ground for this purpose should make it known to the Board. It is understood that if a lot is given, an effort will be made to raise by private subscription enough to buy a handsome iron fountain and watering trough. The County Division Committee have $35 on hand which they will allow to be used for this purpose. The Marshal submitted a statement showing that the water rates amount to $56.25 per month. At the meeting of the Board of Town Trustees on Wednesday, Rev. Mr. Washburne of Westminster informed the Board that permission had been granted to him by the owners of the lot near the corner of Los Angeles and Center streets to erect a tent, in which to hold a series of revival meetings. He asked the sanction and countenance of the Trustees to the project, which was given. The meetings will commence on the 27th instant, the tent to be used being now at Santa Barbara. The meetings will be conducted by ministers of several denominations, and will continue as long as it may be necessary. This is the first time we believe that an effort has been made to work up a religious revival in Anaheim. The people here are more indifferent than irreligious, and it would not be surprising to see, as the result of the revivalists' labors, a religious activity heretofore unknown in Anaheim. During five days of the latter part of An order has been issued from the Adjutant-General's office disbanding the Los Angeles Guards. It appears that the number of men in the company has fallen below the required quota, through the excessive honesty of the Captain, who virtuously scorned to include the names of absentees on his roster. Where did this Captain graduate? In what military school did he learn to make up a master role? Had this military calamity occurred in '64, Barnum would have paid the honest Captain $1000 a week to exhibit himself. The sensation at Santa Ana is the existence at that place of a man affected with hydrophobia. No particulars are at hand. Commercial. Anaheimphobia is what ails him, not hydrophobia. In the last named affliction the victim goes into spasms whenever he sees water in t'other case he goes into spasms whenever he sees the word "Anaheim." Similarly, hydrophobia is produced secondarily by a too lively imagination. Anaheimphobia, on the contrary, takes root where the victim has no imagination (or brains, which is the same thing). Many people are insuring against accidents in the Travelers Insurance Company, of which E. M. Ferguson is agent for Anaheim and vicinity. It is getting to be the correct thing for those who intend to go out camping to take out a policy for a few months. It costs but a trifle and as everyone is liable to accidents of some kind, it is wisdom to invest in a policy. Price Reduced. The New County Map has been reduced to fifty cents. For sale at the Gazette office. During five days of the latter part of last month there were shipped from Los Angeles by Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express, one car load per day of oranges, one half to Denver and the other half to Kansas City. A car load was also shipped to Chicago. Today a car load will be shipped for Denver and Kansas City. In addition to the shipments to San Francisco, noted elsewhere, there was shipped by Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express yesterday 2500 pounds of garden truck — tomatoes, string beans, chiles verdes, peas, etc., to Las Vegas, New Mexico, and to-day about the same amount will be shipped to Santa Fe. These shipments are in addition to those made by commission merchants of this city and prove conclusively that the railroad connection with Arizona has been of benefit to at least one class of our producers.—Herald. New York, May 3d.—Henry George of California lectured at Chickering Hall last night on "The next great struggle." He was introduced by F. B. Thurber. In the course of his remarks he said: "I measure my words. After looking at many things and thinking of many things, it is my opinion that as it stands to-day, this great American experiment in free government is a failure. Men of New York, do you govern yourselves? It is merely a question of who will be your boss. Even Judges sit on the judicial bench who buy their places. Has not Brooklyn a boss? Look at Philadelphia—for years and years she has lain prostrate at the feet of a boss. The same may be said of Baltimore and San Francisco. It is not the problem of municipal government that we have to solve, but of republican government." Vermont is the only State that has not a single Chinaman. North Carolina and Delaware have each one, and Alabama has four. The largest number in any Southern State is 483, and Louisiana is the State. Sugar growing has brought them there.
