No Prevention of Land Monopoly.
Under the proposed Constitution the land and improvements thereon are to be separately assessed, and cultivated and uncultivated land of the same quality and similarly adjusted, shall be assessed at the same value; but how is that value to be assessed?
After the improvements upon a farm, the buildings, fences, orchards and vineyards, are assessed, can the land be regarded as possessing any greater value than the same quality of uncultivated land adjacent, and will not be assessed, in order to comply with other provisions of the Constitution, be obliged to assess the cultivated land at the valuation he may deem proper for the uncultivated land, and is there anything in the new Constitution requiring him to assess the uncultivated land any higher than he is already required to do under the old Constitution? The clause so confidently referred to by the friends of the proposed organic act as a remedy for land monopoly, like many other articles in that instrument, is one of the baits thrown out to appease those anxious to break up land monopoly, and wholly fails to meet the issue; and if the Constitution is adopted, land monopoly will not be checked in the least. The industrious cultivator of the soil in many localities of this State will find, however, that the same provision will work to his disadvantage. A settler acquires title to 160 acres of wild land, and in order to make it valuable he expends a vast amount of labor thereon. It may have to be cleared of timber, or it may be necessary to protect it from overflow, or it may be rocky, and these impediments to its cultivation must be overcome. By years of persistent industry he renders a portion of his land susceptible of cultivation and highly productive. Perhaps he has forty acres in all thus redeemed from its naturally unproductive condition by his untiring efforts, and such land he considers worth $100 per acre. The balance of his tract is, however, still unredeemed, yet when the Assessor comes to make the assessment the whole 160 acres must be assessed at the same valuation, because it is of the same quality and similarly located. In this instance the labor and industry of the settler, which has made this land valuable, is to be taxed, and not only that but the prospective labor of himself and family which is necessary in order to make his uncultivated land as valuable as that which he has reclaimed by years of toil.

Well-informed persons calculate that there are now in this valley, awaiting shipment, 5,000 tons of corn and 1,500 tons of barley. About the same acresage has been seeded as last year—the area in corn being ten per cent. greater, that in barley ten per cent. less than last year. This year 8,500 acres in corn, 1,500 in barley.—Downey Courier.
A dexterous piece of house-moving was performed the other day in the southern end of the county. A farmer had a mortgage on his land foreclosed. He built a very fine house on the land some time ago, and when the decree of foreclosure was served he prepared to move the house off the land. As the house was about to be moved, an injunction was served, and he was compelled to abandon his purpose. His lawyers made a successful application to the Court for the removal of the injunction, and immediately notified him of the fact. The same day another restraining order was obtained, but the few hours which intervened had been put to good purpose. The farmer's neighbors collected in force and rolled the house away triumphantly just a few moments before the Sheriff arrived with the second injunction.
Enron Gardner.—The regular meeting of the Constitutional Club was held at Bailey's office on Thursday evening. Quite a large number of the town people were present, as well as some of the most solid farmers from the surrounding country. After the necessary business had been transacted, some remarks were made by members of the Club, after which the meeting adjourned in meet at the same place next Wednesday evening. All good citizens are invited to attend.

What is Castile Soap.
A subscriber wishes to know how this differs from other soap. The hard soaps made in this country are almost exclusively from animal fat; in the south of Europe, where the olive grows abundantly, the poorer kinds of olive are used for soap making. Common soap is animal fat, Castile soap is soda and vegetable oil. In making Castile soap, very great care is taken to avoid excess of alkali (the soda), only just enough being used to neutralize the oil. On this account the soap is much milder, and may be used on wounds and other surfaces where common soap would irritate and give pain. The mottled appearance of Castile soap is due to a small quantity of solution of copperas (sulphate of iron) which is stirred into it before it hardens; this leaves a bluish oxide of iron in the soap which, when exposed to the air, becomes changed to the red oxide. White Castile soap is also sold, which is the same as the other without the coloring. Though called Castile, it is by no means exclusively made in Spain, the largest share coming from the south of France, and indeed it is generally known in Europe as Marseilles soap.—American Agriculturist for February.
The general interest taken by the public in the seals trained by the late M. Leconte at the Zoological Gardens has led the naturalist of Westminster Aquarium to try an experiment in training the youngest seal there. It now goes through a performance which includes plucking the strings of a guitar, basting a tambourine, climbing a flight of steps, taking a "header," smoking or pretending to smoke a pipe, firing a revolver, and drawing a boat to which it is harnessed. The performance, to meet public taste, is made more sensational than anything that M. Leconte did, but the way in which the seal enters into the fun, with a keen eye on the fish given to it now and then in the performance, is a good illustration of how these animals can be educated.—London Paper.

FOR THE LUNGS
ERADICATES
Coughs, Colds, Pneumonia, Bronchitis,
Asthma, Croup, Wheoping Cough,
And all Diseases of the Breathing Organs.
HALL'S BALSAM
IS THE LEADING SPECIFIC FOR CONSUMPTION.
It soothes and heals the membrane of the lungs, inflamed and poisoned by the disease, and remedies the night sweats and tightness across the chest, which accompany it.
Consumption
Is not an incurable malady. It is only necessary to have the right remedy, and HALL's BALSAM is that remedy.
Don't despair of relief; for this benign specific may cure you, even though professional aid fails.
READ THE FOLLOWING:
Dr. D. D Wright, of Cincinnati, sends us the subjoined professional endorsement. "I have prescribed Hall's Balsam in a large number of cases, and always with success." He adds that "in one case a patient with every appearance of confirmed consumption, was restored to his usual health soon after commencing to take the Balsam."
John Kuhn, of Lafayette, Ind., writes: "One year ago I was to all appearances in the last stages of consumption, and got so low our doctor said I could not live 24 hours." Mr. Kuhn further states that "after taking nine bottles of Hall's Balsam is now in perfect health, having used no other medicine."
The above brief extracts are taken from a MASS OF EVIDENCE which has been accumulating during a period of 20 years, proving the efficacy of Hall's Balsam in all cases where the breathing organs are affected, and showing the estimation in which the remedy is held by the public and the medical profession. Sold by all druggists. Price, $1 per bottle.
