Trouble in Samoa.
San Francisco, Nov. 29th.A letter to the Chronicle, from its Samoa correspondent, gives another version of the recent events there. It states that Griffin, the American Consul, took forcible possession of the property of G. J. Smith & Co., a British firm, at Wulanha, for an alleged American claim, without having first sent the claim through the British Consul, as is the custom in the absence of a legal system.
Representatives of Smith & Co., Hunt and Cobrough regained possession of the warehouse and the property was put under the British seal.Pending settlement of the matter Griffin tried to get the natives to attack the warehouse, but they declined because he could not raise $2,000 which they demanded for the enterprise.A committee of safety has been organized to preserve peace.

THE GENERAL
A man came to the County Clerk's office yesterday and wanted to qualify as Justice of the Peace for one of the county townships, claiming his election on the ground that one of the two candidates declared elected by the returns had failed to qualify within the time prescribed by law and that he, having received the next highest number of votes, was entitled to fill the existing vacancy—he received one vote at the election, having voted for himself, and made the application to qualify in sober earnest. —Herald.
Col. Peter Saxe has entered suit before Judge Gray against the Southern Pacific Railroad Company for the recovery of four orates of Berkshire pigs, the railroad agent having refused to deliver them on payment of the freight charges. The action is brought for the recovery of $232 and damages. —Herald.
The Elections.
New York, Nov. 8. —The Herald says: Hayes and his Republican friends are very well satisfied with the result of the elections. The Administration has come off a great deal better than its enemies expected, but it is claiming rather more than the facts warrant when it lays down so broad a rule as that the success of the Republican party in each State has been in proportion to its endorsement of the President. We do not believe that the Republicans lose much in New York or New Jersey by their shabby course towards the Administration. New York and New Jersey elections afford no special reasons for either congratulations or regrets by the Administration. The Republican party, however, is entitled to feel some satisfaction that its unfortunate intestine quarrel has not sensibly weakened it in either of those States. The result in the main may be fairly regarded by the friends of the President as a signal triumph.
Washington, Nov. 8th. —The Tribune's Washington dispatches say that investigation shows that Republicans are agreeably surprised at the result of Tuesday's election. The administration and its friends are pleased with the Massachusetts vote. Southern Democrats are glad that the Tammy power is no greater, and that McClellan has not majority enough to make him a prospective Presidential candidate.
