Chicago, Oct. 26.-Gen. O. O. Howard, who arrived here from the West last night, having either personally or through an officer given out, without the knowledge or consent of the War Department, a report made by himself to General Sheridan, concerning the Nez Perces war, which at least gives a more flattering account of his share in the hostilities than was given in other reports, and the Tribune having published that report this morning, General Sheridan called attention to an old order which makes such action a misdemeanor, punishable by dismissal. He intimates that, upon a repetition of the offense, the punishment will be visited upon the head of the transgressor. Congressional Proceedings. Washington, Oct. 25.-Petitions were presented for the removal of the National Capital to the Mississippi valley. Garfield said he had a petition, which he desired spread upon the table, from 210 colored men, asking assistance from Congress to enable them to go to Liberia for the purpose of making it their permanent home, saying that a large movement to that place was going on among them. Read and referred. It states the difficulties of competition with labor, and asks that an allowance of $100 each be made to emigrants under the auspices of the Colonization Society. Cox presented a protest of white laborers against fixing the legal compensation of government employees and leaving that of mechanics and laborers at the whim of individuals. Referred. Wright presented the petition of 21,000 workingmen of the 12th Congressional District of Pennsylvania for a government loan to aid settlers on the public domain. Referred. Kelly—I desire to present the petition of a citizen of the United States, asking Congress to so change the financial system of the country (interruptions of laughter) that laboring people shall not appeal to the Government for the means of expatriation of themselves and their posterity, and that they may continue to live in homes of their choice and pursue the callings to which they have been trained. Signed, Win. D. Kelley. A Priest Expelled. London, Oct. 25th.-Several dispatches from Rome assert that the General of the Jeansite, by the Pope's order, has been expelled from the Society, Father Cruci, who was editor Cirlite Catolica, both as a sacred orator and writer, has heretofore been regarded as one of the brightest ornaments of the Jeansite order and the Roman Church. Father Cruci's offense was maintaining that the temporal power is not necessary to the well being of the church. It is said he intends to publish a full account of his differences with the Vatican dating from 1871. POST-OFFICE DIRECTORY. Northern and Eastern malls arrive at 6:30 P.M. Leave at 6:20 A.M. [FROM SATURDAY'S SEMI-WEEKLY.] —Mr. Ames has succeeded Mr. S.Shale as conductor of the Anaheim branch of the S.P.R.R. Mr.Anton Satter of Los Angeles proposes to take up his abode to Guatemala and devote his attention to a coffee plantation. In the case of the People vs.D.R.Foreman, charged with robbery of corn from land from which he had been ejected by the Land Co., before Justice Bailey yesterday, the defendant was held to answer before the Grand Jury. A meeting of irrigators is called for today, at 11 o'clock A.M., in this place, to come to some understanding, if possible, in regard to the framing of a law which shall secure an equitable distribution of the waters of our rivers. It is to be hoped there will be a large attendance, and each man give expression to his views, and that a harmonious result may be attained.-Downey Courier. We desire to remind our readers that connected with the Gazette is a first class Job Printing office, from which is turned out printing of a very superior style.Letter-heads, envelopes, bill-heads, cards, circulars, labels, tags, etc., printed in elegant style and at prices which will suit everybody. Calling attention to the card of Mr. A Priest Expelled. London, Oct. 25th.-Several dispatches from Rome assert that the General of the Jesuits, by the Pope's order, has been expelled from the Society, Father Cruci, who was editor Cirlite Catolica, both as a sacred orator and writer, has heretofore been regarded as one of the brightest ornaments of the Jesuit order and the Roman Church.Father Cruci's offense was maintaining that the temporal power is not necessary to the well being of the church. It is said he intends to publish a full account of his differences with the Vatican dating from 1871. A Bold Theft of Diamonds. Chicago, Oct. 26th.-Last Tuesday night a bold and successful robbery was perpetrated by a woman and a male accomplice in the Palmer House whereby some $5,000 worth of diamonds were taken from a Mr.Shay and others of this city. The matter was kept quiet by the police, and to-day Detectives Scott and Heinzeman,of Chicago, arrested James Berry at Kankakee and brought him to this city. All the stolen goods with many others were recovered with him and it is understood that he confesses the robbery. The woman has been captured. Bound to get to Arizona. A man, who tried to beat his way out here on the cars, was put off the train at Colton When the train reached Dos Palmas the conductor, in passing around the locomotive, was horror stricken by the sight of a human foot sticking out through the upper bars of the cow-catcher.He thought he had a corpse, sure. But closer examination showed that his "dead thing crawled,"and that it was the same man put off at Colton. He had crawled under the cow-catcher and wedged himself into it with his head in the fore peak of it,not over four inches from the railroad ties, and his feet poked through the upper bars nearest the engine.Lying there, back down, had this Arizonomaniac come the entire distance from Colten.Ot course,他was invited to get out of that.A man with "Arizona on the brain"as bad as that ought to be presented with a free pass out here.Yuma Sentinel. The editor of the Guadalupe Telegraph was a candidate for Justice of the Peace at the late election, and didn't get elected. The succeeding issue of his paper contained the following: Public Notice.-Heretofore it has been our custom to do a great deal of free advertising.in the shape of "puffs,"notices,etc.-in fact.to do everything to advance the interests or anything that could benefit this community, regardless of profit to us.How our efforts are appreciated, and what gratitude exists in this community.is shown by the very uncomplimentary vote given us Wednesday.Hereafter.all individuals, societies or meetings, desiring editorial notices, must pay for them to secure insertion.* * We expanded $125 in election tickets, and consider it the best investment we ever made.By it we have found out just how we stand in this community, and how many friends we have.* * We would emphatically state that we wanted (and we felt we should have)from this communitythe compliment of an election;but as the returns show, the did not receive even a complimentary vote. Letterheads, envelopes, bill-heads, cards, circular labels, tags, etc., printed in elegant style and at prices which will suit everybody. Calling attention to the card of Mr. Reiser in this morning's paper, gives us the opportunity to remark that if our vineyardists desire to build up a trade, either home or foreign, they should by all means give publicity to their specialties through the columns of the Gazette. A stranger, who has heard of Anaheim's famous wines, and who desires to make a purchase, will naturally turn to the Gazette as to a directory for the name and location of the leading wine-growers, and those that are represented therein reap the benefit of the publicity they have given to their business. And as the Gazette circulates extensively in other States, there can be no question but that an array of wine dealers' cards would attract an attention among readers which could not fail to be advantageous to the advertisers and draw increased attention to Anaheim. Austin Reville: She was from the country, and she went into a Main street store and asked to look at some stockings. "What number ma'am?" inquired the polite clerk. "Only one pair this time," she answered, "and if I like them I may buy some more the next time I come in." "I mean, what number do you wear?" exemplified he of the yard stick. "What number do I wear? Young man, ain't you ashamed of yourself? Do you suppose jest 'cause I live in the country that I go scootin' around with one stocking? The number I wear is two, of course. Do you think I'm a heathen, and do I hobble around like a woman with only one leg?" Then the clerk managed to make her understand that he wanted to know the size of the stockings she required, and she guessed about eleven inches would do for the foot, and as to the rest it didn't matter much. There are thirty-three Temples of the Janissaries of Light in the State. The order originated in Los Angeles three years ago. The lawyers who defended the Blisses, the Philadelphia pretended spiritual mediums recently tried for swindling, have been arrested on a charge of bribing jurors to disagree. The Mississippi planters have formed a combination against the merchants who furnish them supplies in advance of their crops. The merchants charge fifty per cent. profit, and give credit for a year. They claim that their expenses and losses reduce the profit to fifteen per cent. The first telegraph line in China is at work, and most wonderful of all, has been erected by a Chinaman. It is six miles long, and connects the official residence of the Viceroy of Perchili with the Tientsin arsenal. As it was projected by a native, no attempts at interference were made by the people. The Chinamen who have for five years been in the employ of Sampson, the North Adams shoe manufacturer, are now out of work through his suspension of business. They are preparing to return to China, although many of them have become pretty thoroughly Americanized, and have joined Christian churches. It is rumored in Washington that the English Mission has been tendered to Grant. Prince Sergius of Leuchtenberg, aide-de-camp of the Emperor of Russia, was killed in the recent reconnaissance of the Czarovitch. The New York World says that Geo. W. McGlyan, recently nominated for Senator, has been taken to an insane asylum. The excitement consequent upon his nomination caused his mind to give way. A new sect called "the Purifiers," belonging to the Greek Church, has sprung up in Russia. Their heading doctrines are that all persons must marry on coming of age; that the husband must be subordinate to the wife, and recognize her as the head of the family; and that once a week he must confess his sins to his wife.
