The San Francisco Chronicle publishes the statement of John C. Myers, the suspended Consul-General to China, relative to his suspension by Minister Seward, which he claims was prompted by improper motives, and that Seward's hostility was due to the fact that Myers had opposed him in corrupt and improper transactions; that Seward was interested in building roads and railways in the vicinity of Shanghai, and used his official influence to force those enterprises upon the Chinese people in contravention of the principles of international law and treaty obligations; that Seward leased the Consulate buildings and rented them to the United States at a profit of $400 per month; that one of the United States Marshals, John Phoenix, had been serving five years under a temporary appointment, at the annual salary of $1,000, while the fees of the office had been appropriated by Seward and Bradford, the Vice-Consul at Shanghai, and the same course had been pursued with Phonix's predecessors, and that the records had been mutilated to cover up those illegal practices. These and other transactions were discovered by Myers, and met his opposition, which occasioned Seward's hostility. The statement was prepared by the aid of counsel, while Myers was recently in San Francisco, and with the accompanying documents will be presented to the Senate Committee. OUT OF ORDER.-A capital story is told of Marshal MacMahon when colonel During a parade he had an altercation with an officer in the ranks who refused to obey him. The Los Angeles Common Council have decided to let contracts on the new irrigating works on the basis of white labor; i.e., successful bidders will not be permitted to employ Chinese labor on the works. We are relieved from the necessity of shedding gore by the following apology which we find in the San Diego News: "We have abandoned the heading Kleinigkeiten for the present, because it seems that the Anaheim Gazette had a patent onto it." Express: Mr. H. M.Johnston returned a few days ago from his sheep range near San Gorgonio. Johnston returned a few days ago from his sheep range near San Gorgonio. He found that his sheep were suffering from the attack of what is known as the screw fly, and were dying off at the rate of twenty per day. He made immediate arrangements to place his sheep on a range of feed he had secured a short distance out of this city. The screw fly lights on a sheep, bores a deep hole in its flesh, and deposits a quantity of eggs. In a few hours the flesh begins to decompose, and the eggs turn into maggots. The sheep soon dies after the maggots have incubated. The screw fly was never seen in California till this year. We take the following items from the Los Nietos Valley Courier: We regret to announce the death, yesterday, of the little daughter of Mr. Myers, of this place... On Wednesday last the first lot of new corn was hauled to the railroad station here. It belonged to Mr. James Shaggs, and was sold to Deming, Palmer & Co., of Los Angeles, for $1 30 per hundred in gold, delivered at this depot. There were one hundred and forty-one sacks. This is a little earlier than usual for cori to come into the market, and is accounted for by reason of the extreme and continued heat this year, which has ripened corn earlier... The qualified electors of Mainland are notified by advertisement in another column, to vote on the question of a tax to build a school house, on the 27th instat. The amount to be raised is $2500.
