SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 22.
In the matter of the Congressional contest in the Fourth District, ex-Governor Pacheco's counsel yesterday filed a petition in the Supreme Court asking for a writ of mandate to compel Secretary of State Beck to issue a certificate of election to Pacheco. The petition was filed, and the court set Thursday, December 29th, for hearing.
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 22.
In explanation of the motives of Barber, who killed Conrow last night, it appears that for about a year past he had been living with Ella J. Carter, who came here from Rhode Island last year, leaving her husband behind her. It came to his ears that Conrow had also lately been on terms of intimacy with his paramour, and in visiting her last night he forced from her a confession to that effect. He then left her hurriedly and sought his victim. Barber and Conrow had previously been fast friends.
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 21.
The Lick Estate has again come up in the Probate Court. This time it is Wm. H. Lick who is asking for letters of administration. He says that he is a nephew of the deceased James Lick and a son of John Lick, also deceased; that if deceased at any time signed a document acknowledging himself the father of John W. Lick, he was at that time insane; that deceased was of unsound mind for three years before his death; that the legal heirs of the deceased are himself, Henry Lick, of Alton, Illinois, his brother James H. Lick, his half brother, who has already filed a petition for letters of administration, and Mrs. Julia Ann Antrim, of Paris, Illinois, his half sister, and if there are any more legal heirs he does not know of them. He states that the letters should be issued either to him alone or to him and his half brother, James W Lick. The time set for the hearing of this petition is the same as that of the other two—Jan. 3.

NEW YORK, Dec. 22.
The Herald's Tallahassee special says: The Democrats carried the city election to-day, electing their Mayor by twelve votes. The election was perfectly quiet. The Republicans had about two to one on the registry list. A great many colored and white Republicans voted the Democratic ticket. This is the first time the city has been carried by the Democrats since the war.
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 23.
Barber, who killed Conrow on Wednesday night, through motives of jealousy, and then shot himself, died in the City Prison Hospital last night. To the end he maintained stoutly his desire for that result, and died heaping improcations on Conrow's sonl with his last breath.
All the interest in the contest between Wigginton and Pacheco for the coveted certificate of election from Secretary Beck, has centered in the Supreme Court. The petition for a writ of mandate by Pacheco will, to a certain extent, do away with all proceedings in the lower courts. Secretary Beck was to have explained to Judge Denson, of the Sixth District Court of Sacramento, to-day, why he did not obey the writ of mandate issued by that Court, and give a certificate to Pacheco. But a Sacramento dispatch says the case was continued to Saturday, the 30th inst., awaiting the action of the Supreme Court. On Wednesday next he will be called upon by Judge Dalingerfield to show why he did not obey his writ of mandate, and give a certificate to Wigginton—that is, he will after Pacheco's petition is disposed of. But now that the Supreme Court has been appealed to, the other cases will probably be called, continued and dropped from the docket. This is the status of the contest, which will begin to draw to a conclusion in the Supreme Court next Tuesday.

WEBER ARE THE BEST
Never before in the history of piano forte manufacture has an instrument risen so rapidly in public favor.
Its intrinsic merit and decided superiority over all others, has caused every musician and artist of note to adopt and recommend it.
Nilson says, "I shall take every opportunity to praise and recommend your instruments."
"Miss Kellogg says, 'Your Pianos are my choice for the concert room and my own house'"
Lucca says, "Your uprights are extraordinary instruments, and deserve their great popularity."
Patti says, "I have used the Pianos of every celebrated maker, but give yours the preference over all."
