We learn that a party of fifteen Russians will arrive in Anaheim in a few days, with the intention of settling here.
A gentleman living near Anaheim has imported a number of ferrets from England to assist him in killing the gophers, which are such a pest to the farmers in this section.
There has as yet been but one shipment from Anaheim for the Los Angeles exhibition and railroad reception. Won't some one send a squash or a bunch of grapes?
There was a lady in the case this time, and Ah Mann struck her on the head with a club. It seems that the gentleman is the proprietor of a Chinese hotel, and one of the lady guests, having conducted herself in a manner unsatisfactory to the Boniface aforesaid, he read to her the riot act, illustrating it with a club. Justice Pailey took a benevolent view of the case and fined all hands for disturbing the peace.

We desire to firmly impress upon our correspondents the necessity of sending their real name and address in addition to the factious name intended for publication. We are frequently compelled to reject communications of genuine merit because this simple, but universal, requirement is not complied with.

—the excursion to witness the driving of the last spike on the Southern Pacific Railroad, is to be an exclusive sort of affair. Only fifty persons will be allowed to participate. It would be in much better taste to give the general public an opportunity to be present at the ceremony.
—The Helmann & Sorenson Fruit-Dyer did not go into operation yesterday, on account of the non-arrival
—The Programme Committee of the Anaheim Literary Society, consisting of Messrs. F. M. Cahill, W. H. Henderson and Victor Montgomery, visited Orange yesterday and held a conference with the committee of the Literary Society of that place regarding the proposed debate between the two Societies. It was agreed that the debate should take place at Anaheim on the 29th inst. The question to be discussed is Resolved, That war has done more to advance the interests of civilization than peace. Anaheim will argue in the affirmative.
From Tuesday's Daily.
—W. S. Wright arrived last night fresh from his Eastern trip.
—The Alden Fruit Dryer commenced operations yesterday.
—Mr. Werder returned on Saturday from his trip to the Centennial.
—The Los Angeles Democratic Club now has a membership of four hundred.
—Prof. Baldwin, the exposer of Spiritualism, will perform in Los Angeles next week.

—the steam whistle at the Planing and Grist Mill, and the one at the Alden Works now toot in concert. The steam pump at the old Schenk vineyard occasionally lifts up its voice also. Although in a musical point of view the sounds are not melodious, it makes one realize that Anaheim is "some pumpkins" of a business place after all.
About one o'clock on Monday morning, as Arthur Heimann was wooing the "balmy," a noise, as if some one was trying to open the shutter, awakened him. With the natural imbacacity of a man rudely aroused from a sound sleep, he called out to ascertain who was there at that unseemly hour. As he did so,a couple of men left the window and fled. Heimann pursued but failed to overtake them.
The Express notes some recent arrivals as follows: Early in the present year a colony started from Boston for the Salt River country, Arizona. They were disappointed in their Arizona experiences, and a squad of them arrived in Los Angeles today. They are "flat" broke and Jones & Norris...

The Helmann & Sorenson Fruit-Berry did not go into operation yesterday, on account of the non-arrival of a very important piece of machinery. Everything will be in running order on Monday, and we hope to get some few samples of dried fruit in time for the Los Angeles exhibition.
Mr. William Dempsey was very much disgusted with the conduct of our deputy sheriff, who would not let him lie quietly down on the sidewalk and sleep off the effects of a late dinner. He came up before Justice Balday yesterday morning and contributed eight dollars and a half to make the county rich enough to employ a more obliging officer.
There was a railroad meeting held at San Bernardino on Thursday afternoon, at which the principal citizens of that place took the railroad situation into serious consideration. Hon. Herman W. Rolfe, presided. After consultation it was determined to appoint a committee to visit Los Angeles at the time of the completion of the northern division of the road, and interview the directors of the Southern Pacific to ascertain on what terms they can have connection by rail with their city. They wish to secure a branch to Cajon, and are willing to offer the company liberal terms for the connection.
From Sunday's Daily.
The Grange Building Committee held a meeting yesterday to make arrangements for painting their hall at the depot.
The Express notes some recent arrivals as follows: Early in the present year a colony started from Boston for the Salt River country, Arizona. They were disappointed in their Arizona experiences, and a squad of them arrived in Los Angeles to-day. They are "flat" broke and Jones & Noyes were intrusted with the sale of their few remaining effects. They propose to stay in Los Angeles. They are desirous of obtaining work, and our people should extend to them all the encouragement possible. They look like sterling fellows, and we understand that many of them are mechanics.
On Sunday afternoon the new Grange building, near the depot, had a narrow escape from destruction. The straw with which the roadmaster macadamizes the road, by some means got on fire, and before it was discovered it had assumed such proportions that it required the utmost efforts of a small army of men to extinguish it. During the progress of the fire, and when it was supposed that the flames were getting beyond control, a courier was despatched to town for help, but before the reinforcements arrived at the scene their services were unnecessary. We have been requested to publish the following card:
"The thanks of the "Fairview Grange Hall and Building Association" are hereby tendered to the citizens at the depot for their prompt action in subduing the fire which threatened our new building on the 3d inst. Also to the citizens of Anaheim for their kind intentions in offering help so promptly. Although the fire had been subdued before arriving, their intentions are duly appreciated and will be kindly remembered.
J. W. Clark, Sec'y."
The services in the new Episcopal Church on Sunday were largely attended. The edifice is universally pronounced to be a handsome structure, although when it is entirely finished it will present a much more favorable appearance.

LIVERPOOL, Sept. 1.
The leading grain circular says that since Tuesday the weather has been very broken, with heavy gales and an almost incessant rain. The progress of the harvest has been materially interrupted. Take the kingdom generally, a large proportion of the wheat remains exposed in the fields, the home supply, at the same time, being limited.
The demands of consumers have again been freely directed to foreign stocks, and these, as well as the home grown, have further advanced in most markets, the latter as much as one shilling and two shillings per quarter. There was a moderate attendance at this market to-day and a continued good demand, especially for white wheat, which is improved 1d @2t, and red American, 1d per cental, but the latter was not in native request. Flour was 6d, per sack higher. Corn was in fair demand at 3d. per quarter above Tuesday's prices.
MONROE, La., Sept. 1.
A fresh excitement sprung up last night in consequence of the report that the negroes were arming in the northern part of Parish and coming to burn the town. About seventy-five negroes, mounted and on foot, were found at Captain Hillop's place; a parley ensued and the negroes refused to disarm; they said they would come back with five hundred men. Captain Thebolds, with one hundred men, blocked the road with rails. The news spread rapidly; armed white men from this and Morehous Parishon went to the rescue. The excitement was intense, but nothing occurred and not a gun was fired. Some scattering demonstrations were made in Monroe last night by armed negroes, but nothing serious occurred. The alcalian is decidedly precarious, but the leading citizens are proceeding with prudence and moderation.

He would therefore say to the unfortunate sufferer who may read this notice, that you are treading upon dangerous ground when you longer delay in seeking the proper remedy for your complaint. You may be in the first stage; remember you are apprising the last. If you are burdening upon the last, and are suffering some or all of its ill effects, remember that if you persist in procrastination, the time must come when the most skillful physician can render you no assistance; when the door of hope will be closed against you, when no angel of mercy can bring you relief, in no case has the Doctor failed of success. Then let not despair work upon your imagination, but avail yourself of the beneficial results of his treatment before your case is beyond the reach of medical skill, or before grim death hurries you to a premature grave. Full courses of treatment $25.00. Send money by Postoffice order or Express with full description of case.
