We did not think it at all dull along Fifth street, to-day, but in a little walk in that direction we thought we noticed a disposition on the part of several to do more sleep than the hour seemed to Justify. Doc. Williams, was doing away like a good fellow, and Herman was as fast asleep as he will be when judgment catches him. At Till Burnes' several were in front and seemed inclined to go and take a snooze. George was wide awake, but he slept before two o'clock, we guess. The Nebraska State Journal says: Some distinguished liar of "Calaveras County" has written to the Petalurina (Cal.), Argus, a description of a talented two-headed child in the "Red Woods" near that place, which can converse with two persons at one time, and also hold a lively argument with itself. One head has rich brown hair, dark eyes, and is a brunette called "Dollie." The other has a burnt curls, blue eyes and a fair skin, and is called "Ollie." The scamp that manufactured this luus natura is a plagiarist, and stole the whole thing bodily from the two-headed democratic party, born the other day at St. Louis. A little girl in a Pennsylvania town recently saw an old drunken man on a door-step, the perspiration rolling off his face, and a crowd of children preparing to make fun of him: She took her little apron and wiped his face and then looked up so pitifully to the rest and made this remark: "O say, don't hurt him. He's somebody's grandpa." The Candidates. We present to our readers this morning accurate stereotyped likenesses of the Democratic and Republican candidates for President and Vice President. NEW YORK, Aug. 3. The Tribune's Washington special says the political campaign was apparently reopened in the House with the remarkable speech delivered by Lamar, to which Gartfield will reply to morrow. How long the discussion thus sprung up in the House will continue no one can tell. Lamar has long decided to give to the country a judicious and dispassionate review of the Southern question, and his discourse to day will be received by every one, without regard to party, as the best presentation of it that thus far has been made from his point of view. Lamar spoke to-day as a statesman and not as a politician. The opening portion or his speech, in which he discussed the relations which political parties bear to our institutions and government, and the dangers which have arisen from the intervention of party organization between the government and the people, was a masterpiece of eloquence and sound political philosophy, which will be of interest to students of political history irrespective of party. He discussed the causes of the present condition of the South, from a statesman's highest point of view. He dealt in no invectives, indulged in no personal criticism and abused no party. He only attempted to lay before the House a description of the true condition of the South, and to explain its causes. He allowed others to draw their own conclusions as to the best way in which to apply the remedy. He suggested that the restoration of local self-government could be applied. His speech was listened to throughout with marked attention, and was universally admitted, by those who disagree with his conclusions, as well as by those who approved them, to be one of the ablest, if not the ablest, of the session New York, August 4. The Times says that ex-Speaker Deswit Littlejohn has just addressed a letter to a friend, in which he says: "I have fully determined not to support Tilden for President, but shall vote for Hayes and Wheeler." This conclusion of Littlejohn is a surprise, when it is remembered that he is among the few New York Delegates to the St. Louis Convention who sincerely opposed the nomination of Tilden because, he is unfit to be President of the United States. The following advertisement recently appeared in a Paris paper: "Madame XX permits herself to say that she has the skin white to pearl, full health, the cheek of roses, face of sweet expression, blue eyes, black hair, figure coquette, therefore is full of health. She will be vaccinated next Tuesday, and in as short a time as possible the lymph of her arm will be ready for the vaccination of anybody desiring to possess all these mentioned charms. For terms, apply," etc. The Visalia Delta of Thursday says: The exodus towards Arizona still goes on. Quite a number of our old settlers have left during the last week or two, and others are striking their tents and she has the skin white to pearl, full health, the cheek of roses, face of sweet expression, blue eyes, black hair, figure coquette, therefore is full of health. Quite a number of our old settlers have left during the last week or two, and others are striking their tents and quietly dropping away. The trouble between husbands and wives too often is that they do not understand each other—do not comprehend each other's sensibilities. A man can't well sit with his hoof planted against the back of his wife's chair without knocking some of the enamel off the romance of marriage. St. Louis Republican: We have tried almost every plan with these infernal Influins but marrying them. Will Dr. Mary Walker immolate herself on the altar of hard-tack and mess pork, and annex Sitting Bull or one of his youngest men? Her example would be a bright and shining light to thousands of the surplus sisterhood who are wasting their virgin sweetness against the wall.
