Miss Sarah Smiley, the Quakeress, has such a knack of reading the Bible that 2,000 people gather to hear her do it in Rochester. Grace Greenwood's husband, L. K. Lippincott, has lost the position which he held in Washington, as Chief Clerk in the Land Office. The Basine journals of Maine are impressed with the conviction that Mr. Bostow is just the man for the second place on the national ticket. It is said that General Butler has commenced a thorough canvass of his district with a view of entering the Congressional contest next fall. General Adelaide McLellan, Burnside and Fitzhugh Lee, will be the head officers of the New Lugandal, Middlesex and Southern Social and Religious Contents in Alaska. These Indians believe in evil spirits who live in the water, and send sickness and disease among the people—a belief to which the occasional disasters caused by mussel or fish poisoning have doubtless given rise. They hold communication with these spirits through their sorcerers, but do not worship them in any way or try to propitiate them with offerings. When a Kolesh dies his body is burned, and a rude monument placed where the ashes are buried. They believe that the spirit lives forever, but have no idea of any reward for virtue or punishment for vice. According to their belief strict distinction of rank is preserved in the other world, all the chiefs being in one place, the common people in another, and the slaves in a corner by themselves. Only when slaves are killed at the funeral of their chief their souls remain in eternal attendance on their master. This cruel custom was said to be abolished under the Russian rule, but it always has existed, and is kept up to the present day, though the ceremonies are performed out of reach of the authorities. Several cases of the kind have occurred since the transfer of the territory, in spite of the vigilance of the authorities; and no wonder, as our government has done nothing to suppress slavery where it exists right under the very eyes of military rule. When a child is born it is carried and nursed by the mother until it is able to crawl and march away on deified salmon, then the scanty clothing of far with which it was covered at first is removed, and to strengthen its constitution the child is immersed in the river or sea every morning, but as their own parents would be likely to yield to the piteous cries of the little martyrs to discipline, this duty is generally entrusted to an uncle or some other relative, who stops all weeping and screaming with a liberal application of switch. Freeds says that Nabar Pasha, the Egyptian ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs, is one of the wisest and wittest men he has met in his tour around the world. Sam Carey, of Ohio, who was so badly decimated as the candidate for Lieutenant Governor in that State, last autumn, is to mount the stamp for the Connecticut electionists. He has not been enlisted by adversity. General Kilpatrick, in speaking of his New Jersey farm, said: "My mother superintends the farming, and she is the best farmer of the family, completely outgoing her sons, and will surrender to none of us." WHITEFIELD, the great evangelist, has been dead a hundred years, but it is with difficulty he has been kept in the crypt where his body was laid, in the old church at Newburyport. Parts of his skeleton and chops from his tomb have been carried away by relic hunters, and the sexton has orders to watch every visitor. Somebody once stole one of the arms, but after being taken across the Atlantic, it was returned with a letter of penitence from the thief. The box in which it was sent is now kept in the coffin. Wild and inhuman as this treatment seems to us, this terrible delusion made great havoc in the community until about one hundred and fifty persons were accused, quite a number of them being hung on Gallows Hill; and as I stood that bright, fair morning, looking down upon the town below from the same place where these poor mortals had taken their last look of earth, before being hurried into eternity, it seemed almost impossible to give the idea reality in my mind, to think that such things could have happened in our own enlightened America, however such deeds might seem in keeping with the dark ages. But perhaps of even greater interest than this is the old house formerly occupied by Roger Williams in 1635, afterward by Jonathan Curwin, one of the Judges during the witchercraft trials. The timber of which it was built was brought from England, and rumor says that it is "The House of the Seven Gables," made famous by Hawthorne's genius. But the most important fact connected with it is the trial of the so-called witches. We entered the very room where the trial took place, though it has been greatly changed since then, as well as the front of the building, but the rear has been left almost untouched, and presents a very curious appearance. Odil and yellow, these papers still remain as the evidence of what fanatics may do among even a Puritanical and God-fearing people, some of whom may have worshipped in the little church built in 1630 which we visited soon after, perhaps even some of the Judges who condemned these innocent persons to death. The church is an old little structure, very small, plain and unpretending, and hidden away behind the more imposing buildings, forms a striking contrast to the costly churches of to-day. But although Salem is a strange old place with its ancient mansions and curious legends connected with them, though its witchcraft chronicles which I have merely touched upon give it its greater motoriety, yet it cannot vie with its sister town of Marblehead in intricity of streets and oddity of architecture, for in the older part of the town the houses look as if they had been gathered up in some great hand and then scattered broadcast here, there, and everywhere; endways, cornerways, sideways; anyway but the right way; and in driving through the tortuous streets, unless one has a very safe steel and careful driver, there seems to be danger of being brought suddenly to a stand-still against some projecting corner, or getting so twisted up in the confusing jumble of countless turns, hills and corners; that it would be almost impossible to extricate one's self with no broken bones. But through these streets we one day found our way to the old burying ground on the hill, where so many of the early settlers of Marblehead have found a resting place. Hard and barren as their lives must have been in gaining a subsistence on these rough and inhospitable shores, it seems not inappropriate that they should lie down to their last sleep on the rocky hill overlooking the blue waters where they had sailed so often. Many of the stones are so worn and obliterated by time and storm that it is impossible to read the inscriptions; crumpled and falling we can never tell who rest beneath them; but there are some which date back to 1681 and 1687. One dated in 1807 reads as follows: "Behold and see as you pass by. As you are now so once was I. As I am now so you must be; Prepare for death and follow me." Another one, to the memory of "James Bennish Hammond, hero of frigate Constitution," 1840: "Immortal honor to all those Who fell in Freedom's naval fight, And vanquished all their Country's foes." A bright young widow charmed him, and he married her slyly. His wedding present was $1,000 in cash. He went, but his family, having heard of the marriage, imprisoned him in his house, declaring that he should not rejoin his wife. Then she went herself, and aided by a hired man, besieged the house, the doors of which she locked. Her husband shouted encouragement to her from a window, and platols were brandished by both parties, but she had to go away without him. The courts will decide. Here is another odd one, where instead of being written Rebecca, wife of G. Bonfield, reads in this way: "Here lies Rebecca G. Bonfield, his wife, who did much good in her life," 1687. Wandering among the old stones we came upon a citizen of Marblehead who assisted us in our researches, and the conversation turning upon the poem of Floyd Ireson, he informed us that Whittier's version was not correct, that Ireson would gladly have aided those on the wreck, but the sailors refused to obey his orders, and then agreed among themselves to lay the fault to his charge. He said that Ireson had only been dead a few years, and that Whittier greatly regretted his mistake, and also told us that a celebrated speaker, referring to the poem in a lecture in Marblehead, a murmur of disapprobation ran through the house at once, and a citizen of the place arose and stated the real facts of the case.—E.
