Price, the only negro lawyer in Texas, has been elected County Attorney of Fort Bend County, Texas. James Russell Lowell will lecture next spring at Cornell University on "Early European Literature." Henry Lippett is the Republican candidate for Governor of Rhode Island; Wm. B. Leach, the Democratic. The Democratic State Convention of Rhode Island has nominated General George Lewis Cooke for Governor. Charlotte Cushman in her youth sang in the choir of the church of which young Ralph Waldo Emerson was pastor. Roberts, ex-President of Liberia, died Birds Ornamental. A somewhat lively discussion is going on in England as to whether it is not harboring to kill birds for their plumage. One gentleman has written an indignant letter, in which he intimates that he has an arsenal of brickbats in store for anybody whom he catches killing cock-robin for this purpose within his reach; while a Cambridge professor in his philanthropic wrath forgets his gallantry, and protests against the slaughter of the feathered innocents in order that "women may deck themselves out like salmon-flies." This remark has set another and more cynical critic aglow, who seizes the occasion to declare rather viciously that "women are as cruel as they are vain, and are perfectly well aware of the pain and torture which the modern fashion of feather-ornaments of necessity inflicts." The conclusion of all this is that ladies should at once and forever abandon all those adornments which comprise the wings and feathers of brilliantly-colored birds. No doubt it is cruel to put to death, as being done every year in England and this country, and probably in many others, many thousands of hummingbirds, robins, egrets, parrots and kingfishers, in order to secure dress decoration, which is a luxury, and not a necessity; and we confess to sympathizing with the wish of these excited gentlemen—that the ladies might find some substitute for ornaments which preordain a vast amount of torture to the sweet denizens of the air and trees. But, as a fact, if the philanthropists adopt the principle implied, and enter into a crusade against all practices which inflict cruelty upon the dumb creation, for purposes of amusement and luxury, and not of necessity, they are likely to have an interminable work before them. The Lake-Dwellings of Europe. Various attempts have been made to estimate the age of the lake-dwellings, the form and size of the superstructures, and the number of inhabitants; but the figures obtained are largely the result of conjecture, and have very little value. Nor is it certain what was the exact reason for building on the water instead of on land. Protection from hostile tribes, safety from wild beasts, and convenience for fishing, have been suggested, but are far from sati-factory. It seems pretty clear that they were not merely temporary abodes, that domestic animals as well as human beings were housed in them, and that some of them were abandoned without being burned. The scarcity of human remains is an enigma to archaeologists, and not the slightest clew appears as to the manner in which the lacustrians disposed of their dead. Dr. Oswald Heer, in his work on the plants of the lake-dwellings, says they show connection with the countries of the Mediterranean, but none with Eastern Europe. The cereals were identical with those of the ancient Egyptians. The fauna of the lake-dwellings includes a large number of fishes and birds still common to the country (but with no trace of any domestic fowl), and the bear, dog, the ass, the ibex, the sheep, the cow, the hog, and other large animals, many of them belonging to extinct species. Since the discovery of the lake-dwellings of Switzerland, similar structures have been found in Italy, Bavaria, Saxony, the French Jura, and other parts of Germany and France, and in Denmark.—Appletons' American Cyclopedia, revised edition. MANSFIELD FRENCH, popularly known as Chaplain French, a prominent Methodist minister, and widely known as a friend of the colored race, died at the pastoral charge at Pearsalls, Long Island, recently, aged 66 years. MR. JOHN D. PHILBRICK has been elected Superintendent of the Boston public schools. He has had a wide and varied experience in school matters, having been principal of the Connecticut State Normal School, superintendent of public schools in the same State, and superintendent of the Boston public schools for many years. He also served as State Educational Commissioner to the Vienna Exposition. RALPH WALDO EMERSON delivered a lecture lately in Concord, Massachusetts, on the subject of "Perpetual Forces." He drew an analogy between the forces of nature and their workings and the spiritual and intellectual forces. The absence of any report of the lecture in the papers is explained by the following placard, which was displayed at the ticket office: "Tickets for sale for this lecture on condition that no report is taken of it. Frequently food can only be preserved by hanging it up in bags, or placing it in cupboards which stand on legs inserted in vessels of water. Summer brings its plagues of impalpable dust, and winter one of fathomless mud—fleas are as busy as in Rome, and in their season mosquitoes and gats hold high carnival. So the most conscientious person who had a sensitive skin, as well as a sensitive conscience might, after all, seek that intoxicating air without much danger of being too happy there.—Lady's Journal. The plan of the Centennial grounds embraces seven miles of roads and footpaths, bridges across shaded and precipitous ravines, summer-houses, and numerous fountains fed from George's Hill Reservoir, just outside the enclosure. This contains 40,000,000 gallons; but in addition to this source the river, which skirts the northern rim of the exhibition grounds, will supply through pumping engines, 6,000,000 gallons more a day. If any one speak ill of these, fine home to thy own conscience and examine the heart; if then be guilty, it is a just correction; if not guilty, it is a fair instruction; make use of both; so shalt then distil honey out of gall; and out of an open enemy create a secret friend. The Black Hills. Courten Cree, Feb. 24, 1876. The season is at hand when the adventures of every community, impatient of the slow results of toil and skill, are thinking of throwing aside as valueless the certainties and comforts which they enjoy and the opportunities which a settled, industrious life are sure to present of obtaining a moderate competence, and daring privation, starvation and the Indian's scalping knife in a desperate quest for sudden fortune. The eyes of all such are turned to the Black Hills, and reports of regular stage communications, arrivals of parties, non-intervention of the government troops, the attitude of the Indiana, etc., will be eagerly read. No greater service can be done to any community than to place it in possession of authentic information, and hence your correspondent, though unaccustomed to writing for the press, conceives that he cannot do his old friends and neighbors of Rock Island a greater service than by preparing for publication in the Union a brief statement of his adventures on his way to the latest land of gold. I left Sioux City April 6th, 1875, with the Gordon party, and nothing occurred worth mentioning until we struck the Niobrara river. Then trouble commenced. A small party of Indians with a soldier scout followed us for a week. Tired of this espionage, we sent out a committee of four, who captured the soldier, whereupon the Indians fled. Our prisoner stated that he was a deserter, but this was untrue. His company soon appeared, and surrounded us. We were ordered to surrender and go back to Port Randall. We refused, taking the ground that we were in Nebraska, and could not be molested there by the government. Permission was accorded to us by Captain Walker to go on to a point in Nebraska forty miles from the reservation. Arriving there we saw no resource but to remain until the hills were opened, and accordingly laid off lots for a town and called it Gordon City. Captain Walker, in the meantime, obtained four companies of soldiers from the Spotted Tail agency, and just as we had our city comfortably laid out—on paper—we were surrounded by the blue coats, who planted a Gatling gun on a hill thirty yards distant from our camp.
