The zanjero of the Anaheim Water Company reported yesterday to that body that the ditches were very much in need of repairs, that the gates were out of order, and that a part of the main ditch was filled with sand. The zanjero was ordered to put everything in good order for the irrigating season.

Mr. Kimball, of the Kimball Mansion, has a two year old tomato vine trained up against the side of his house. It goes right on growing and bearing, and to-day is heavily loaded with large tomatoes, which will be ripe in a week. There are whole volumes of disquisition on climate and soil in the simple statement of a fact like that. Express.
As one of the curiosities of management in this Temple & Workman affair we will mention an incident that has just come to light. A short time ago Mrs. Hughes, mother-in-law of Mr. Butler, of the firm of Starbuck & Butler, took up a mortgage of $1,500, which rested on a piece of real estate owned by her. Not understanding the business she made no demand for the note, and merely received the mortgage in return for the $1,500 paid into Temple & Workman's bank. Very recently the nete for which the mortgage was given was sent from San Francisco where it had been hypothecated for a loan, through the Farmers' and Merchants' Bank for collection, and Mrs. Hughes was astounded to have it presented for payment. She is perhaps liable under the law for the amount but, unless there is another理由 to this claim, passed it over.

A bill for these gulls in the new Monica was referred on Fish Culture.
The Senate joint Congressional improvement of San Joaquin and Petaluma was referred to Federal Relation.

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 3.
The Bulletin to-night published a story of finding a diamond deposit between Pescadero and Spanishtown, on the Ball ranch, some fifty miles south of this city. The finders are George S. Mondow and James W. Bell. They secured, between them, two or three hundred specimens, twice as large as a castor bean. Mondow says he and Bell prospected in the neighborhood for other deposits, but failed to find any, and represent that the rancheros in the neighborhood are much excited over the find, leaving everything to prospect for the precious stones.
FORT WAYNE, Ind., Feb. 3.
Gen. J. Pye Shanks, former Congressman of this district, publishes a letter to-day in reference to the charges recently filed with the House Com. mittee on Indian Affairs against him by Commissioner Ingalls. Mr. Shanks denies that he attempted to stir up strife among the Indians, but states that he has discovered and reported enormous frauds on the part of Ingalls and others. He charges Ingalls and other parties with conspiring to rob the Cherokees, Greeks, Choctaws, and Chickasaws of twenty millions of acres of land, and with other similar offenses.
COLUMBUS, O., Feb. 3.
General Sherman has written a letter to Representative James A. Dalzell favoring the nomination of Gov. Hayes for President.
BROOKLYN, Feb. 3.
The trial of Rubenstein for the murder of Sarah Alexander was continued to-day. The court room was crowded. The only important evidence was that of Solomon Kraemer, who testified to meeting Rubenstein and the girl on the plank road on the Sunday that the murder was committed. The witness spoke to both of them, and saw them go into the cornfield, and shortly after heard a woman's cry of "Fire! help! my life is gone!" The witness then went about his business and took a car towards Jamaica. During the delivery of this testimony the prisoner was pale as death and looked as though he was going to faint. It is expected that the trial will be concluded by next Tuesday or Wednesday.

NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 9.
August, the negro assassin of Col William Offut, in St. Landry parish, has been captured and lynched. After the crime he fled to the swamps, was traced by negroes of the neighborhood with dogs, and turned over to the Sheriff. An hour afterward he was taken from the Sheriff by a party of whites and hanged to a tree in the presence of a thousand persons.
SACRAMENTO, Feb. 4.
In the Senate yesterday, the bill providing for the deficiency in the appropriations for the State Normal School, was fully discussed and recommitted to the Committee on Finance, with instructions to bring in a general deficiency bill.
The special order with reference to the joint-resolution on the change of route of the Southern Pacific Railroad and abandonment of the portion between Tres Pinos, in San Benito, and Goshen, in Tulare county, was discussed at considerable length. Lewis, of Tehama, and Pierson, of San Francisco, supported the claims of the Railroad, and Lindsey, of Tulare, and Laine, of Santa Clara, opposed. The latter made a powerful speech of two hours' duration in reply to Lewis, opening up the whole railroad question, and maintaining that the corporation utterly disregarded the law. Damaging was the debate to the Company that the Record-Union's report to-day

LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE.
A Few Facts and Figures for the Los Angeles "Express."
In an article entitled "Facts and Figures for the Opponents to County Division," recently published in the GAZETTE, I showed up the inaccuracy and absurdity of some of the statements made by the Los Angeles Express in regard to the cost of erecting a new Court House and Jail. According to the editor of the Express the debt of the county would not be increased more than $20,000. The present Court House and Jail, with the lots on which they stand, says the Express financier, would sell for $80,000; apply the proceeds of the sale of these towards liquidating the new Court House bonds, and four-fifths of the indebtedness is canceled. I exposed the absurdity of this statement by showing that this Express builder had forgotten all about a site for his new buildings. The sites of the old buildings sold, the county would not own one foot of land in Los Angeles city, and the Express' new Court House would be a castle in the air. The cost of a Court House Square would absorb every dollar received for the sites of the old buildings. Evidently the wise man of the Express did not enjoy this expose of his ridiculous blundering, for late he has been devoting columns to the abuse of myself and other advocates of division. As long as he confined himself to this style ofays that $150,000 of the R.R. bonds which go to make up the county indebtedness were given to build a branch road to the southern end of the county. If he will overhaul the contract between Stanford & Co., and the people of the county, he will find that he is mistakes. The contract was for 25 miles of road east, and 25 north of the city of Los Angeles. No county hands were ever issued for the building of the Anaheim Branch. We do not under-value the importance of our railroad, but had we no outlay for our shipping except over this road we would in all probability be compelled to do as Los Angeles has done, build a competing line with our own money to keep down the freight charges on our bond-built railroad to living rates. The Express is my authority for the statement that the Santa Monica R.R. saves to the people of Los Angeles $350,000 yearly as compared with the rates they have been paying the S.P. R.R. Finally, we have no quarrel with the people of Los Angeles. We are proud of their city, proud of her prosperity. The most fanatical among us would not throw a single obstacle in the way of her progress. But we claim the right to build up our own section, and we think we know what is to our advantage without asking the Express and its conjutor.

Ostrich Farming.
The accidental discovery of the artificial incubation of eggs some time since Algeria has, after many diapointing failures, led to practical commercial results. From Algeria the idea of domesticating and raising ostriches for their feathers, in time spread to the Cape of Good Hope, where the business has now assumed the position of a great and growing interest. The chicks are almost wholly raised by artificial means, and during their entire life are supplied with food and shelter like so many domesticated fowls. The birds grow up comparatively tame, though it never seems to lose a certain irritableness of temper. The ostrich farms are usually very large, and to start and maintain one, demands at least $10,000 capital. The business has also extended to South America, and is reported to be profitable. The chicks give saleable feathers during the first year, and increase in productiveness...
ness is canceled. I exposed the absurdity of this statement by showing that this Express builder had forgotten all about a site for his new buildings. The sites of the old buildings sold, the county would not own one foot of land in Los Angeles city, and the Express new Court House would be a castle in the air. The cost of a Court House Square would absorb every dollar received for the sites of the old buildings. Evidently the wise man of the Express did not enjoy this expose of his ridiculous blundering, for late he has been devoting columns to the abuse of myself and other advocates of division. As long as he confined himself to this style of argument, I did not think it worth while intruding upon the columns of the Gazette to reply. But in a recent number of the Express he is again seized with a spasm of figuring. His last attack, if possible, is worse than his first. His financier abilities ought long since to have secured him a position in Temple & Workman's Bank. Says the Express oracle: "It is the vogue with Mr. Guinn and those who, like him, wish to dismember the county on general principles to distort facts which really tell against their proposition, so as to make them appear potent on their side of the controversy." He then makes a statement of the county indebtedness, as shown by the Auditor in his annual report, September 1st, 1875, and bringing the interest down to the close of the years, shows the total indebtedness of the county on the first of January, 1876, to be $719,505. "Now, we have," says he, "to place against this following estimates of property belonging to the county, and the money on hand in the treasury, to wit:
CONTRA.
Cash in the County Treasury belonging to the County...$100,000. Three-fourths interest in jail property...20,000. Court House property...60,000. Bridge property...60,000.
Total...$240,000. Apparent debt...$719,505.
Actual indebtedness...$479,505.
He asks fair-minded men of the southern end of the county to scan his figures, and be convinced that he has not left a plank for the blatant advocates of division to stand upon. I scan his figures, and the more I scan them the more I am astonished at the genius of the man. The mighty head that can reduce the county debt a hundred thousand a year out of the current expense fund and still keep the county running, deserves the title of the grandest figure head (or the greatest head for figures) of all ages. Only think of it! In four years and nine months the county will be out of debt, or rather it could be freed from debt if this great financier was entrusted with the management of the county funds. Let us apply his system of financing to every day business. Suppose his necessities had compelled him some years since, to borrow a hundred dollars; for this he gave his note on which he is paying interest; he has on hand- to-day one hundred dollars; he owes his landlord, his butcher and his baker
Shrinkage and Expansion.
Somebody having been stealing wood from the Eureka Sentinel's wood pile, the editor explains the law of expansion and contraction in the following lucid and suggestive manner: "That heat expands and cold contracts is a principal of philosophy which was never more conclusively illustrated than in the case of our wood pile, which during the last two cold nights has shrunk more than half a cord. If the shrinkage continues the chances are that somebody will be sent to a place where the temperature is expansive, and where firewood isn't worth the stealing.
A large California lion, measuring 8 feet in length, was killed a few days ago by Melvin Sargent on his father's ranch at San Vicente, about twenty-eight miles northeast of San Diego. For months it had been destroying stock upon the ranch, and only a day or two before it was shot had leaped upon a horse, so sized him by the neck and killed him.
The Sacramento county Grand Jury have indicted Assemblyman Wilcox for assault on the Chronicle reporter. Wilcox immediately gave $5,000 bail.
A Washington telegram says: J. C. Wingard, of New Orleans, has discovered a force by which he can destroy vessels at the distance of five miles, and claims he can sweep the seas of all the navies of the world.
Any coward can fight a battle when he is sure of winning; but give me the man who has the plunk to fight when he is sure of losing.
Women charm, as a general thing, in proportion as they are good. A plain face with a heart behind it is worth a world of beauty. Men who have tried both uniformly agree to this.
Temple & Workman, of Los Angeles, have assets of $2,263,000, against liabilities of $1,176,000; assets over liabilities of $1,087,000. Their breathing has been difficult of late, but still we hope and believe that as their strength is in land which must improve, that their lungs and chest are sound. From all reasonable appearances, we have pleasure in endorsing the general belief—S. F. News Letter.

pense fund and still keep the county running, deserves the title of the grandest figure head (or the greatest head for figures) of all ages. Only think of it! In four years and nine months the county will be out of debt, or rather it could be freed from debt if this great financier was entrusted with the management of the county funds. Let us apply his system of financiering to every day business. Suppose his necessities had compelled him some years since, to borrow a hundred dollars; for this he gave his note on which he is paying interest; he has on hand to-day one hundred dollars; he owes his landlord, his butcher and his baker fifty dollars; to meet the current expenses of his family, pay interest, &c., will absorb the remainder of the one hundred before the end of the month. His exhibit to his creditor from whom he borrowed the one hundred would be as follows;
Apparent indebtedness...$100 Cash on hand (for current expenses and owed to other creditors)... 100
Real indebtedness...$000
Can there be anything more absurd than this man's attempt to distort facts and figures? The mighty intellect that can build a hundred thousand dollar Court House in the air, that can expend the whole of the county tax levy in paying off the county debt in four years and nine months, and still keep the county government running, is certainly one of the greatest intellects of ancient or modern times. Such a genius can treat with contempt facts and figures of all opponents; can demolish his opponents with such masterly arguments as, "Guinn declaimer," "blaitant advocates," "petitogers who insult the intelligence of the people with their shallow reasoning and vapid arguments," "superficial people." &c. For the information of this great financier I will volunteer the statement that the old debt of the county was reduced $85,000 last year, and a new bonded debt of $15,000 incurred—real reduction $18,000—and should the Court House Bill, now before the Legislature pass, the debt will be increased $150,000. At the present rate of reducing the debt, instead of paying it off in four years and a half we will probably cancel it about the time Gabriel blows his trump for the final judgment. One more statement of our versatile genius I glance at.
Temple & Workman, of Los Angeles, have assets of $2,263,000 against liabilities of $1,178,000; assets over liabilities of $1,087,000. Their breathing has been difficult of late, but still we hope and believe that as their strength is in land which must improve, that their lungs and chest are sound. From all reasonable appearances, we have pleasure in endorsing the general belief—S. F. News Letter.
Detroit husbands and wives, says the Free Press, sometimes—once in a great many years—have disputes. The other day, when a Beech street couple were holding an angry argument, the husband raised his hands and exclaimed: "Oh! Consistency, thou art a jewel!" The wife at once broke down, and as she sobbed, she gasped out: "You saw her at the opera, I suppose; but, if she had to split wood, wash dishes, and take care of six children, she wouldn't look any better'n I do—boo-boo!"
