We give it up. Uncle Harry's big toe is a better judge of the weather than our whole dareness. The rain still continues, and he is liable to get ten inches yet.
Reports from Orange state that Mr. J. C. Edwards is about to remove his store to Santa Ana, a building lot having been presented to him in that town.
The Anaheim Cemetery Association held a meeting yesterday afternoon. No suitable location has yet been obtained for the cemetery audition. A code of by-laws for the Association were adopted.
Louis Wartenberg, the great discoverer, has made another find. This time it is a gravel bank, which he says is located so near town as to enable him-to haul four or five loads a day. The gravel is quite coarse, and Louis will no doubt have a deluge of orders from those who desire to improve their garden walks.

In the County Court yesterday, the jury in the case of Matthew Orr, Constable of Compton township, brought in a verdict of guilty of assault with a deadly weapon on Juan Sepulveda. This case created some excitement about five months ago. Constable Orr had gone to arrest Sepulveda on his ranch near Wilmington Court to-day.

—The wife of Dr. Crawford, of Los Angeles, died on Thursday.
—Hail stones were lying on the ground in some parts of town yesterday at noon.
—Conductor Mateer recovered his long lost lantern last evening, and is highly elated thereat.
—The I. O. G. T. lodge met last night, and several new additions were received into the ranks.
—About half past eight o'clock on Thursday evening, an earthquake shock was felt at San Fernando.
—About two inches of snow fell at San Fernando tunnel yesterday morning. There was also a slight fall of snow at Cucamongo and Pomona.
—The squatters on the Bolsas have each paid, at various times, $49 10, to defend their suit against the Land Company.
—Mr. T. J. Askin, of Los Angeles, arrived in Anaheim last night. He intends to pass the winter here if a suitable residence can be found.
—The members of Orpheus Lodge, I. O. O. F., will give a ball and supper at Enterprise Hall, on the evening of Washington's Birthday. Tickets, including supper, $2 50.
—Notwithstanding the mud and rain, quite a number attended the Diorama last evening. The moral and instructive always draws a crowd in this community.

—The protest against County Division reads as follows: Whereas, a portion of the citizens of Los Angeles county south of the New San Gabriel river, have petitioned your honorable body for a division of Los Angeles county—New River to be the northern boundary of the proposed new county—and whereas, we, the undersigned citizens of Los Angeles county and the proposed new county, believing that the granting of said petition will be detrimental to the best interests of the people of the proposed new county, are unalterably opposed to your granting said petition, and therefore we respectfully and earnestly demonstrate against the granting of said petition —for which we will ever pray, etc.
—The Tennessee Jubilee Singers will perform at Kroeger's Hall on Monday evening, Jan. 31st. Their reputation as artists is attested by the flattering testimonials received from the Press of this and other States. We clip the following from the Cincinnati Gazette: The sight of a band of well-trained young colored people, who have all been slaves, but who are now able to entertain large audiences, was a novel and suggestive one. The sweetness and smoothness of their voices was likewise an agreeable surprise. But the greatest interest was aroused in the manner of the music. Plaintive, joyous, rude, yet expressive, sometimes startling in its simplicity, it evoked laughter, suggested thought and moved to tears. The music is all of a religious cast, except a little of the modern, which is thrown in by way of variety. It is of a kind that must soon pass away, for the institution which created it is gone forever.

The mother of F. P. Ramirez, died in Los Angeles yesterday.
The stage drivers report the roads between San Juan Capistrano and this place as being very heavy.
We have on file a number of communications which will appear as soon we can make room for them.
The matrimonial knot was tied yesterday in Los Angeles between Mr. C. F. Smurr, of the S. P. R. R., and Miss Arcadia Carrillo.
Mr. Gibson has at length succeeded in getting a good flow of water in his artesian well at the depth of 438 feet.
The exports from the depot this morning were: 23 packages well tools, 8 sacks barley, 8 cypress trees, 6 sacks potatoes.
There was a champion billiard match among the heavyweights last night at the Planters'. The wealthy host found his match in weight, if not in billiards.
final Court to-day. One, January Bairy; was acquitted, and the other, Sexton, convicted. The third of the indicted Judges of that Ward, Green, has fled to parts unknown.
Lincoln, Neb., Jan. 20.
The Colored Men's Convention, to elect delegates to the National Convention at Nashville, Tenn., in April, passed resolutions warmly endorsing the Republican party; depressing the necessity for the calling of the State and National Conventions; reciting that Nebraska needs no separate convention, but that the Southern States do; reciting the cause of the meeting as the murder of 3,000 colored men in the South without cause. The proceedings closed with a banquet.
Cheyenne, Jan. 20.
One hundred men left Cheyenne for the Black Hills yesterday. They were all well armed and fully equipped. No interference from either the Government or the Indians is apprehended. Large quantities of commissary stores are being shipped to Fort Laramie, but for what purpose has not transpired. It is conjectured, however, that an Indian war will commence in the Spring, and that is what the Government is preparing for.
New York, Jan. 20.
Renewed application has been made for the release of Stokes, the murderer of Fisk, and for a writ of habeas corpus for the purpose of allowing him to appeal against the order for his imprisonment. The application was denied.

The Pacific Mail Company have obtained pardon from the Hawaiian

Lambourne's bill for the better protection of the public treasures presented yesterday, provides that Supervisors shall count the money in the county treasury once a month, and lay aside sufficient for each month's wants and seal the remainder in bags. The Supervisors to have the same per clean as when acting as Supervisors.
In the Senate yesterday, on motion of Satterwhite, a bill to authorize the construction of a wagon road in San Bernardino county was indefinitely postponed.
In the Assembly, Suverkup of San Bernardino, presented a bill to protect irrigation and to make water rights responsible for the expenses on irrigating ditches in San Bernardino county. It provides for the appointment of a time-keeper, whose duty it shall be to see that the water is not lawfully diverted from any ditch.
Hayne has given notice that he will at an early date introduce a bill to amend the act incorporating the city of San Bernardino.
The Assembly Committee on Agriculture, Lambourn, chairman, has so much business before it that it has asked for a clerk.
Captain Knox was before the Committee on Irrigation Thursday evening in reference to the Los Angeles Irrigation bill, and made some important suggestions.
In the Assembly to-day McConnell presented an elaborate report from the Judiciary Committee in reference to the memorial of the Bar Association of San Bernardino county, protesting against frequent changes in the Code. The report agrees as to the evil effect of frequent changes, but declares there is no remedy, and recommending the matter to be referred back to the committee.
The Senate adjourned yesterday to Monday. The Assembly will hold a full session to-day.

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 21.
The Pacific Mail Company have obtained pardon from the Hawaiian Government for the piracy of Jas. I. Waddell as commander of the rebel cruiser Shenandoah, in the burning of a Hawaiian whaling bark in the Arctic seas. This act of the Hawaiian Government will compel it to protect Waddell in case he ever enters Hawaiian waters.
The weather to-day has been somewhat out of the common way, even for Winter. It snowed this morning, and the storm was accompanied by a slight shock of earthquake. At one o'clock it snowed and hailed again, and at eight o'clock to-night hail fell thick. The Thermometer was 31 this morning, and now 28. It is the coldest day experienced by San Francisco for many years.
Dr. Stout, who made a report on the Spring Valley water works and the bad condition of the water to the State Board of Health last week, is out in a long statement to-day, going back on his first statement, which he says was made on information furnished by others. In this statement he says he made, at the request of the Company, a personal inspection of the water-sheds, whence the city's supply of water is derived, and finds that good and tolerably clear and clean water is obtained. His first statement was correct when he said the water in the city was impure.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 21.
The memorial committee appointed by recent St. Louis railway convention waited upon the President this afternoon, and presented him with a copy of the proceedings of the Committee in favor of Government aid to secure the speedy construction of the Texas Pacific road. In presenting the memorial, Hon. R. W. Thompson, of Ind., made a brief address on the project, etc. The President in reply stated that he appreciated the great importance of constructing this new route to the Pacific, and hoped the projectors of the scheme would meet with success.

A Washington special says that it is certain that both the candidates and platform to be put forward by the Republican National Convention at Cincinnati, will favor hard money. This destroys Morton’s chances for the Presidential nomination. Hayes is in favor and gains much strength from the fact that Cincinnati has been selected as the meeting place of the Convention. Till Bristow finishes the war on the whisky ring it will be difficult to say how his chances stand.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 19.
Wigginton, of California, yesterday presented over a hundred petitions from citizens of his district, asking Congress to aid the construction of the Texas Pacific Railway.
He also presented petitions praying the restoration to the public domain of the railroad lands on the route abandoned by the Southern Pacific Railroad of California.
SAN BERNARDINO, Jan. 24.
A man by the name of James Walker attempted suicide at Miller’s Hotel on Saturday night, about 10:30 o’clock. He inflicted only a flesh wound on his neck; cutting two small gashes. He was prevented from finishing the deed by Officer Abott and the Clerk, who caught hold of him and took the knife from him. Walker halls from Santa Clara and says he has three children to whom he directed that his money be forwarded to them. No reasons are given for the rash act. Monomania and mental depression are supposed to be the cause. It is thought he will recover.
