Parties from the mountain near San Juan Capistrano have taken root into Los Angeles for many, which proves to be rich with silver. We expect to hear of good mines in that vicinity.
Mr. Martin Wetzel informs us that matters at San Fernando Tunnel are progressing rapidly. A car-lead of Chinamen were taken up yesterday. There was a free fight in one of the saloons at the tunnel about one o'clock yesterday morning.
The closing of Temple & Workman's bank is said to have occasioned no great distress or inconvenience. It is highly probable that the assets will be sufficient to pay the liabilities in full. Some solicitude was expressed in regard to the city funds, but City Treasurer Mellus states that he had only four thousand dollars on special deposit in the closed bank.

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 18.
Senator Jones left for Washington, via Virginia City, to-day in his own palace car.
The managers of the Mechanics' Fair announced last Fall that there would be no exhibition this year. A large number of merchants, mechanics and others have signed a petition asking that the decision be reversed, as there would be no better way of celebrating the Centennial year than by giving an exhibition showing California productions. At the next regular meeting of the managers a decision will be rendered.

From Saturday's Daily.
—Mr. Plerson, a San Bernardino lawyer, is visiting Anaheim.
—The lightning last night made the telegraph apparatus rattle at the depot.
—Hall stones about the size of buck shot fell thick and fast at the Landing yesterday afternoon.
—The exports from the depot this morning were two boxes of trees, weighing 255 pounds.
—An opinion was given at the depot last night that three hours rain would make the San Fernando road hardly passable.
—It was exactly one year ago yesterday that rail communication was established between Los Angeles and Anaheim.
—We met a young gentleman on the street last evening, who had turned himself into a traveling perfumery shop by coming in to too close proximity with a pole cat.
—A slight altercation occurred on the streets yesterday, resulting from the practice, which we are sorry to say has become prevalent among some of the boys in town, of throwing stones at Chigamen.
—We are informed that we erred in stating that an appeal had been taken in the case of Parker vs. Bennerscheldt. The defendant yesterday paid twelve dollars and costs, and settled the affair.
—Auditor Squire of the Southern Pacific Railway, furnishes the Express with the following railway statistics: For 1875 the total exports were 20,682,000 pounds; local freight, 32,-036,000 pounds; the total imports, 104,-826,000 pounds; Western Development Company freight, 56,780,000 pounds; total, 221,814,000.

The remains of T. Rodgers Johnson, late Grand Secretary, I. O. O. F., will be brought to this city and buried by the order.
SACRAMENTO, Jan. 13.
No new business affecting the southern portion of the State, has been introduced to-day. Preston's Assembly bill, requesting our Representatives in Congress to secure an appropriation for the improvement of the San Luis Obispo harbor, passed the Assembly. Also Graves' Senate bill, providing for a change in the time for holding the Courts in the 1st District. Hayne's Assembly bill, concerning the Treasurer of Ventura, will be reached to-day in the Assembly, and probably pass to engrossment. Among the bills on the Assembly file to-day is Harding's Assembly Bill, making an appropriation for translating into Spanish (the laws of the last session of the Legislature). Its passage is recommended by the Ways and Means Committee with an amendment. The work was done two years ago but no appropriation was made for the payment.
ROME, Jan. 14.
It is said the arrangement between Prince Bismarck and the Pope and the Vatican has charged the German Bishops with others to examine into and report what measures can be adopted to permit the Prussian Bishops to submit to the laws made by the German Minister. The arrangement is the result of a circular recently sent.
CHICAGO, Jan. 14.
Six new indictments were returned by the Grand Jury in Milwaukee yesterday against parties not heretofore implicated in the whisky ring. The names of the candidates for the Penitentiary are withheld till the officers have them safe under cover, the precaution being considered necessary on account of the prevalent desire of the crooked business men to visit Canada.
Nineteen car loads of material, with which to erect the Japanese department at the Centennial, arrived here yesterday morning. About 100 cars of Japanese articles, destined for the Centennial, are expected to go through this city.
SACRAMENTO, Jan. 14.
In the Senate, Lewis, from the Judicial Committee, presented a major report from the Committee asking further time to consider Lindsey's concurrent resolution memorializing Congress that if the route of the South-Jersey River is changed from its current course to a more efficient path for boiling agaric fruit it now appears that ex-Bossard handled ring more directly interested in lily capture.
—Auditor Squire of the Southern Pacific Railway, furnishes the Express with the following railway statistics: For 1875 the total exports were 20,082,000 pounds; local freight, 32,-036,000 pounds; the total imports, 104,-828,000 pounds; Western Development Company freight, 56,780,000 pounds; total, 221,814,000.
—The members of the Episcopal congregation held a meeting at Enterprise Hall on Thursday afternoon, to discuss the propriety of commencing to build a church. The Treasurer's report showed that there was $978 in the building fund. A committee, consisting of Messrs. Olden, Kellogg and Potter, and Miss Lafaucherie, was appointed to procure plans for a church, to have a capacity of seating one hundred and fifty persons, and to cost about three thousand dollars.
From Sunday's Daily.
—Short, the auctioneer, did a land office business yesterday.
—J. J. Stoll, of Los Angeles, died yesterday morning.
—The Cemetery Meeting has been postponed until next Saturday afternoon, at half-past three.
—Quite a jolly crowd assembled to assist Martin Classen in getting his saloon fairly opened last night.
—It is rumored that a new steam line will be organized to run between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
—The exports from the depot this morning were: 4 sacks potatoes, 10 cases indies, 8 bundles sheep pelts, 1 show case, 1 box glass, 1 roll gas fixture, 1 box batter, 2 cases eggs, 2bbla eggs, 1 box mase, 49 pkgs H. H. goods.
SACRAMENTO, Jan. 14.
In the Senate, Lewis, from the Judiciary Committee, presented a majority report from the Committee asking further time to consider Lindsey's concurrent resolution memorallizing Congress that if the route of the Southern Pacific be changed the land grant between Goshen and Pacheco should inure to the company. The Senator moved that further time be granted.
Laine opposed further delay. If any good is to result from the passage of the resolution it must be sent to Congress at once.
Lindsey said all the resolution asked for was that if any new contract was made between the Southern Pacific and the Government the people should be heard.
O'Connor could see no necessity for delay. The whole question was whether the Southern Pacific should be allowed to change its route and then take 1,530,000 acres of land aggregated for another route to build it.
Tuttle said: "I think the only proposition in this matter is, whether the Legislature is in favor of Congress donating any more money or land to railroad companies. I have information from a member of Congress which leads me to believe there is an attempt being made to change this route for the purpose of getting all the lands between the terminus of the Southern and the Atlantic and Pacific, which terminates on the sea coast in Ventura county, and it is their object to get land between these two points and retain whatever lands have been granted them."
The vote was taken on allowing the
Indictory Committee until Tuesday to make a report on the resolution which resulted: Ayes 25, noon 14.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 14.
The investigation recently made shows that the expenditures connected with the Black Hills Expedition, known as the Red Cloud Expedition and the Geological Expedition under Prof. Janny, were made without authority of law, and that some $12,000 was paid out of the Treasury Department on account of these expeditions before it was discovered that there was no authority for the payment. The matter is now in the hands of a special committee of the House for further investigation.
Prof. Janny, who is now in Washington, has received letters from a practical miner formerly connected with the Black Hills expedition, and who is now in the Black Hills country, stating that gold has been found in the greatest abundance in at least two places, and that mines are being successfully worked, even under great disadvantages. The order of the Government, prohibiting citizens from trespassing in the Black Hills, is still in force, but the insufficient military force of that region is unable to keep them out.
SAN BERNARDINO, Jan. 17.
This morning, about four o'clock, the California and Arizona Stage Company's stage, from Prescott, was stopped within eight miles of town, by two masked men, one of whom jumped in front of the leaders, and the other pulled two revolvers on the driver and demanded the treasure-box, which he threw out to them. The robbers then ordered the driver to proceed. He did so, and at the same time called to Mr. Rubel Thomas, division agent, who was inside the stage sick and asleep. As soon as he was informed of the robbery he stopped the stage, which had not gone over four rods, and took a passenger and an extra driver who was on the stage,
ship crew from the mouth of the Hialeah river to the Detroit, eight miles and estimating that $10,000 will complete this great work, and with this great improvement wheat or corn can be delivered in Liverpool for fifteen cents per bushel.
AINDE, Jan. 16.
Thomas H. Kennedy, the defending Treasurer of this county, who left about two months ago, returned yesterday. Mr. Kennedy's deficiencies amounted to $12,000.
NEW METHOD OF CURING TOBACCO.
A new method of curing has been introduced which will add materially to the success of the tobacco interest in North Carolina. This is in curing the leaf off the stalk. The advantage obtained this wise is shown in the following yield of 230 pounds of green tobacco, one-half of which was cured on and the other half off the stalk. That cured off the stalk, 12 lbs. 10 oz.; stalks weighed 6 lbs. 11 oz; total 19 lbs. 5 oz. Curden stalk, 11 lbs. 11 oz; stalk on this top 8 lbs. total 19 lbs. 11 oz. It will be observed that the grand total is just the same except 6 ounces, and in this lot cured off the stalk 15 ounces, or something like 8 per cent. on the leaf is gained, while the other gains 1 pound; but that gain is in a worthless stalk.

Jumped in front of the leaders, and the other pulled two revolvers on the driver and demanded the treasure-box, which he threw out to them. The robbers then ordered the driver to proceed. He did so, and at the same time called to Mr. Rubel Thomas, division agent, who was inside the stage sick and asleep. As soon as he was informed of the robbery he stopped the stage, which had not gone over four rods, and took a passenger and an extra driver who was on the stage, and started back after the robbers. They had proceeded but a short distance, when a noise attracted their attention, which proved to be the robbers in the brush trying to break open the box. They proceeded cautiously toward the sound, but the robbers heard them and ran away leaving the box behind unopened, and it being dark, it was useless and perilous to follow them. Had it not been for the presence of Mr. Thomas and his determination to rescue the box, they would have gotten away with the contents, amounting to about fifteen hundred dollars. The Sheriff and a party are now out after the robbers, and some hopes are entertained of their capture.
CHICAGO, Jan. 16.
A Milwaukee special states that Hager, bookkeeper of Valentine the distiller, who was surrendered by his bondmen, threatens to tell what he knows. There is talk on the streets of evidence having been obtained implicating Matt Carpenter and Judge Hubbel, and there are indications of a complete break up of the whisky ring.
A Times reporter claims to have seen a letter from Secretary Bristow, expressing warm disapproval of the compromises which have been made with such of the whisky men as have confessed. The Secretary thinks the so-called compromise little else than a plot to secure the escape of guilty men and is determined not to abide by any agreement made by Government counsel in this city, who, if reports are true, will be replaced by other and more efficient prosecutors within a few days. Those who pleaded guilty have been feeling quite comfortable but the prospect that the whole arrangement is to be upset, has set the pot to boiling again at a lively rate. It now appears on competent authority that ex-Boss Hessing not only handled ring money, but was also directly interested in the Illinois distillery.
