Edmunds said he desired to state before offering a resolution which he proposed, that in regard to the resolution offered by him last Friday, touching the President of the Senate, there had been some discussion. He then offered the following: Resolved That Thomas W. Ferry, Senator from the State of Michigan, be President of the Senate until January 7, 1876, and until new appointments shall be made. Morrill submitted a resolution that the Committee on Commerce be instructed to inquire into the expediency of reporting by bill or otherwise some measure to increase the efficiency of service of steamboat inspectors. His red cape costs about thirty-two pounds; it lasts him about a twelvemonth. His silk stockings, which are made by a Belgian house, cost four pounds a pair. His shoes vary in price, according to the nature of the embroidered cross on them; one pair is decorated with crosses of brilliants, worth four thousand pounds. The Pope's old clothes are eagerly sought after by devotees, who keep them as religious relics, and many are the faithful who write to him to beg the gift of an old slipper or pocket-handkerchief; but the Holy Father, as a rule, leaves the matter in the hands of his valet, who naturally makes fine pickings." The letter attributed to Thomas Carlyle, flinging disdain on American colleges, has already been denounced as a hoax. What he really wrote to President Elliot, under date of Nov. 23, was as follows: "Some days ago I received your courteous and obliging letter and along with it the University diploma appointed for me on the 30th June last, which now lies safely reposited here. In return for all which I can only beg you to express to the Governing Boards of the University my lively sense of the honor they have done me, and my cordial thanks for this proof of their friendly regard, which I naturally wish may long continue on their part. SAN FRANCISCO MARKET. The continued pleasant weather, coupled with the unusual cheerful prospect with which the new year opens, promotes business and creates a noticeable activity in all departments of trade. Reports of the most promising character, relative to farming as well as mining operations and prospects, reach us daily from all parts of the coast. The mineral resources of the country are constantly being opened up. Large tracts of virgin land are being rapidly placed under calibration; new manufacturing industries of every description are projected, and so crown all capital is beginning to interest itself in these enterprises, and seeking new avenues for investment. These are only the outlines of the prospects with which the new year opens. Since July 1st, 1875, we have dispatched 108 ships to the United Kingdom, loaded with 4,000,000 centals wheat and flour, having a value in round numbers of $8,800,000; we also note the fact of quite a large number of ships having been chartered and loaded with wheat and flour from the Columbia river, Oregon, during the season. The disengaged tonnage in our harbor at date amounts to about 23,000 tons, with a large number of ships now due, and daily arriving. Rates of charter have been steadily declining, and are weak at our quotations. The present rate for first-class grain carriers to a port direct being £210.6d @ £211s. The Liverpool wheat market continues steady at our quotations as given last week, and the market at date is firm. The market here is a shade stronger, with ready purchasers for all export grades that are offered. We note continued large sales of wheat, slightly damaged, at a concession from regular rates. Choice milling continues scarce and extreme rates are paid by our millers. Potatoes are in large stock, and bring good prices. The Fall clip of wool has been almost entirely disposed of and there is still a demand at full rates. Butter receipts are unusually heavy for the season, and prices are very low. Cheese is becoming scarce and commands high prices. Eggs are scarce and high. Choice green fruit is scarce and finds a ready market at high rates. WHEAT—The offerings on this market are only moderate, and all fair export grades in order find ready buyers at our quotations. There are some inferior and damaged lots offered at a reduction, for which purchasers are hard to find. Choice milling is scarce and wanted, our millers paying extreme rates for all such. There is no change in prices in the English market. The latest Liverpool quotations are for average, 106d@11s; Club, 11a@11s. Our present market quotations are as follows: Choice milling, $1 95 @$2 00; fair to good export grades, $1 87 @$1 92); damaged and inferior at less rates. The ship Three Brothers, owned in this city, cleared for Liverpool December 23d, with a cargo of 88,200 centals wheat, valued at $180,-500, on owner's account. FLOUR—There continues an active demand for both export and home consumption; prices are as yet unchanged, but hardening; millers find some difficulty in procuring the choice milling grades suitable for manufacturing their finest brands of Family extra—paying extreme rates for such. The market is firm at our quotations. We quote "O summons condition of humanity." How many wretched homes in our land! How many heart-broken invalides! Life with many signifies a more open existence. Extra family is jobbing at $600@$625. BARLEY. The market is overstocked, and prices weak at our quotations. Coast feed is now quotable within the range of $115@$120; New Brewing is held at $1300@$132%; Chevallier, choice, $160 per cental. OATS. We have no change to report. Feed is in moderate demand at $175@$190. Choice qualities for milling purposes are scarce and readily bring $150@$200 per cental. RYE. Receipts are moderate; rates unchanged. The range of prices for the week have been $145@$150; the latter an extreme rate for extra choice. CORN. Receipts are large; demand limited. The present range in prices shows a wide margin, which is owing to variations in qualities. The market is weak and sales are made within the range of $112@$120. BRAN and MIDDLINGS. The mill prices are now $225 for bran, and $325 for ton for middlings. The demand is good. HAY. Choice wheat is now selling at $1700@$190 per ton. The range of prices for all other kinds is from $1350 per ton upwards. STRAW. A good article is salable at 65% of bale. CEMENT. Eastern Rosendale is quotable, $275@$300; Jobbing at $325@$350; Portland, $475@$500; Jobbing at, $525@$550. LIME. Santa Cruz, in large lots, $200; retailing at $225 per bbl. PLASTER. The product of the Golden Gate Mills is furnished to the trade at $300@$325 per bbl. BEANS. The supply is large; general quality good; demand fair at low rates. Lots from Wharf are quotable as follows: Bayous, 2½c; White, 1½c; Pea, 1¼c; Pink and Red, 1½c; large Butter, 2½c; small do, 1½c; D. Castor beans are in request. The mills here are paying 4c for all clean lots. SEEDS. There is a good demand for all the varieties, and prices are firm at our quotations. The yield is said to be quite large and general quality above the average. The demand is very light. Large quantities have lately been sold for export, and the stock remaining is quite light and better price rule. The home demand has improved. POTATOES of all kinds have been in excess of the demand; a large proportion being inferior in quality and damaged.
